FRESHMEAT II LAUNCHED
by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
Section: freshmeat
Tuesday, January 30th 2001 03:09
It's here. It's new. It's freshmeat II. (/me quits rhyming) -- Way too much
time has passed since the last rewrite. The first baby-blue freshmeat went
online Jan 1st 1999, more than 2 years ago. Here's baby-blue freshmeat II,
codenamed 'Verdi'. Besides being completely restructured database wise to
better cope with with the project data, this release incorporates most of
the features users requested in the past months. Click the link for a quick
rundown. Update: Yes, you convinced me the select boxes suck and as such
they will be replaced with link icons as soon as I get a chance.

[001] - 401 BLOCKER 0.0.1 (DEFAULT)
by N/A (http://freshmeat.net/users/not-available/)
Tuesday, January 30th 2001 05:14
401 Blocker works by using a 401 error doc call (Bad Pass) to the script
which logs the attempt's source IP address. If the script sees a
configurable number of further bad password attempts in a certain
timeframe, it rewrites the .htaccess file to block that IP permanently.
Changes: Initial release.

[002] - APACHE 1.3.17 (DEFAULT)
by N/A (http://freshmeat.net/users/not-available/)
Tuesday, January 30th 2001 04:01
Apache is the world's most popular HTTP server, being quite possibly the
best around in terms of functionality, efficiency, security and speed. It
was originally based on code and ideas found in NCSA httpd 1.3 (early
1995).
Changes: Lots of bugfixes and improvements. See
http://httpd.apache.org/dist/CHANGES_1.3 for details.

[003] - APC ALTERNATIVE PHP CACHE 1.0.7 (DEFAULT)
by N/A (http://freshmeat.net/users/not-available/)
Tuesday, January 30th 2001 05:24
APC was conceived of to provide a way of boosting the performance of PHP on
heavily loaded sites by providing a way for scripts to be cached in a
compiled state, so that the overhead of parsing and compiling can be almost
completely eliminated. There are commercial products which provide this
functionality, but they are neither open-source nor free. Our goal was to
level the playing field by providing an implementation that allows greater
flexibility and is universally accessible.
Changes: APC was partially fixed for Solaris. mtime support for relative
includes has been fixed and support for mmap has been added. The code has
been cleaned up. The indexed-array initialization bug has been fixed.

[004] - ASPELL .33 (DEFAULT)
by N/A (http://freshmeat.net/users/not-available/)
Tuesday, January 30th 2001 03:31
Aspell is a spell checker designed to eventually replace ispell. Its main
feature is that it does a much better job of coming up with possible
suggestions than ispell does. It also has support for checking (La)TeX and
HTML files, and run-time support for other non-English languages. Aspell
also is a library; however, the recommended way to use aspell is through
the Pspell library, as the actual interface to the aspell library is
constantly changing.
Changes: A new full screen curses based interface, typo analysis, a
reorganized manual that is hopefully easier to follow, an expanded
dictionary words found in the original ispell dictionary, and a switch to
the multi-language branch of libtool have been added.

only in russian.
Changes: The ability of recoding *to* UTF-8 and Unicode was added. Some
bugs were fixed. Support for mac encoding was added, including mapping
tables and auto-detection.

A mindmap is a knowledge visualisation and archiving tool. MindMapping is
displaying the knowledge in a tree structure so that the associations and
links between knowledge "nodes" are visible. This implementation
additionally allows one to archive the knowledge in graph form instead of a
tree structure, to have multiple roots, and to add images, databases, and
translations of whole books. An English to French Dictionary is currently
provided, and many other languages will be supported in the future. The
MindMap also features special nodes which allow one to perform SQL queries
on the data.
Changes: The documentation and the concept have been improved. The client
was switched to a plugin architecture and the model now supports listeners.
