      by ChArChI (http://freshmeat.net/users/charchi/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 16:25

APA is a PHP/MySQL photo album with the ability to dynamically add and
remove photos. It also features users, comments, an unlimited number of
albums, an admin section, and multilanguage support.

Changes: This release add support for thumbnails and a shell script to
    automatically generate thumbnails with ImageMagick.

      by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 11:03

atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip, etc). The main command is probably 'aunpack' which extracts
files from an archive. It overcomes the dreaded "multiple files in archive
root" problem by first extracting to a unique subdirectory, and then moving
back the files if possible. aunpack also prevents local files from being
overwritten by mistake. Other commands provided are apack (for creating
archives), als (for listing files in archives), and acat (for extracting
    files to stdout).

Changes: Configuration file support, support for identifying archives using
file, ability to use gzip to decompress .Z files, and some minor bugfixes.

Automated Password Generator is a set of tools for random password
generation including a standalone password generator, an RFC972 password
generation server, and a Perl client for the password generation server.
These feature a built-in X9.17 random number generator, and 27 modes of
password generation, including pronounceable password generation.

Changes: Better error handling in apgbfm, a new -q option for apgbfm and
apg (quiet mode), and a PHP frontend for apg.

      by Sylvain Gesbert (http://freshmeat.net/users/sylvain/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 11:12

Bomber Instinct is a multiplayer-only bomberman-like game which adds many
features (such as special powers for the characters). Basically, several
people must battle in a maze, their only weapon being a bomb which
explodes, throwing flames vertically and horizontally. The game only plays
on a single computer for now.

Changes: Lots of updates since the last release, including a partial code
rewrite, several bugfixes, new sound effects and music, and several
    enhancements in gameplay.

      by Maksim Rogov (http://freshmeat.net/users/zigzag/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 03:45

BussyMouse will watch your IDE interrupt (14 by default, can be easily
modified), and show an animated disk near your mouse cursor while your
disk is in use. Extremely useful for avoiding running the same program
    twice.

      Thursday, July 5th 2001 03:38

FileManager is a secure (SSL), multi-user, and web- based program for file,
directory, and remote command management. It is written in Perl, for
Linux and Unix-like operating systems. It displays full directory
information; allows file viewing, deleting, renaming, uploading,

      Thursday, July 5th 2001 10:30

Hexcurse is a versatile ncurses-based hex editor written in C that provides
the user with many features. It currently supports searching, hex and
decimal address output, jumping to specified locations in the file, an
"undo" command, "bolded" modifications, and quick keyboard shortcuts to

insertItem function that incorrectly sorted the items in the linked list,
changing the "goto" functions so if the destination of the search is

algorithm. It works well as a standalone application in textmode or in
graphical mode. It can generate keys, encrypt files, and create
Passphrases. It can be easily used as a library by other applications as
streams, and such use requires only a few lines of code. This is a good way
to incorporate strong symmetric encryption in your application.

Changes: Minor bugfixes and code cleanups.

[026] - JEXN (Java Exception Notification) 0.1.1 (Default)
      by Paul Sijpkes (http://freshmeat.net/users/sijpkes/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 03:32

JEXN allows you to receive instant exception stack traces in your email if
your software crashes on a user's machine. It is a simple, powerful Java
class that can be added to any Java 1.3 or later application. In the
unfortunate event that the application crashes, the virtual machine
redirects the System.err stream to a small JSX (Java Serialisation to XML)
powered server application. The server then forwards the exception
stacktrace on to a user specified email address.

Changes: Added 'to' field email validation. Enabled user specification of
email 'subject' and 'from' fields, and the name of the application JEXN
    monitors.

    [028] - libping 1.12 (Default)
      by Jeffrey Fulmer (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdfulmer/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 10:52

Libping is a small C library designed to allow a programmer to make
ICMP_ECHO requests and network services inquiries directly from a script or
program. The library includes support for pinging HTTP/HTTPS, POP3, and
SMTP services. The distribution includes pinger, a script-friendly utility
linked to the library and intended to be invoked directly from scripts.
Unlike most ping utilities, libping will timeout on both unreachable hosts
and unreachable networks. It returns a value every time it is called, a
feature which makes programming ICMP echo requests simpler and more
    reliable.

Changes: Two new library functions which return the round trip time in
milliseconds, changing the utility's name from pinger to ring, and round
trip time support in "ring." The API enhancements are documented in the
file NEWS and the man pages provide complete information.

    [030] - Linux Intrusion Detection System 1.0.11 for 2.4.6 (2.4.x)
      by Huagang Xie (http://freshmeat.net/users/xhg/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 03:08

The Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) is a patch which enhances the
kernel's security by implementing a reference monitor and Mandatory Access
Control (MAC). When it is in effect, chosen file access, all system/network
administration operations, any capability use, raw device, memory, and I/O
access can be made impossible even for root. You can define which programs
can access specific files. It uses and extends the system capabilities
bounding set to control the whole system and adds some network and
filesystem security features to the kernel to enhance the security. You can
finely tune the security protections online, hide sensitive processes,
receive security alerts through the network, and more.

Changes: This version moves to kernel 2.4.6. Fixed the symbol export error,
and updated the default lids.conf to fix the install error. Added a new
feature: CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE to special port. With this new feature, you
can specify one program can only bind to special port.

    [031] - Linux Port/Socket Pseudo ACLs 2.4.6-5 (2.4)
      by anthonyu (http://freshmeat.net/users/anthonyu/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 18:33

The Linux Port/Socket Pseudo ACLs patch allows an administrator to delegate
privileges for some protected network resources to non-root users. The ACLs
are generally used to run untrusted or insecure applications as an
unprivileged process, thereby mitigating some undiscovered denial of
service or root compromise. The ACLs cover protected ports, raw sockets,
    and packet sockets.

Changes: SOCK_PACKET sysctl has been moved to
/proc/sys/net/sock_packet_gid. SOCK_RAW permission check has been ported to
the new (as of 2.4.6) inet_create().

    [049] - Polymorphic XML Parser 1.1 (Default)
      by GPS (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerdstolpmann/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 22:39

PXP is a validating XML parser for the programming language Objective Caml.
It strictly implements the full XML-1.0 standard. The XML instance is
represented as a tree of objects. It is also possible to access the DTD.
PXP means "Polymorphic XML parser" and emphasizes its most useful property:
that the API is polymorphic and can be configured such that different
classes are used to store different types of elements. PXP contains a
user's manual and several example, and has been designed with CGI
programming in mind, however is not limited to this field.

Changes: The XML parser now supports namespaces. Furthermore, the object
model has been enhanced such that it is now simpler to modify XML trees
(arbitrary insert/delete operations). Some problems with the object model
have also been fixed. In particular, it is now clearer when the object
methods validate and when they accept any contents. It is now possible to
defer validation until it is really reasonable to do so. The parser has
become faster. The representation of the XML tree does not need as much
memory as before. It is now possible to configure which lexical analyzer is
used. The distribution has been cleaned up.

POPauthd is a Perl-based daemon that uses POP to authorize connecting hosts
for SMTP relaying. It is particularly useful to authenticate roaming users
with IP addresses that change often. The daemon runs in the background,
watching the syslog for successful POP logins. When it sees one it enters

      Thursday, July 5th 2001 21:45

Qt ISDN Linux is a graphical frontend to isdn4k-utils, based on Qt 2.2.4+.
It allows you to run either single or dual connections, and it supports
hisax and syncppp. It can also share the Internet connection with the rest
of your LAN if you wish.

Changes: New icons were added. New checkboxes were added in the access
level tab: "Load ISDN subsystem on boot" and "allow users to connect". The
"allow users" button was removed and replaced with a new "Activate" button
which activates the settings of the new checkboxes. This makes it possible
to undo settings. A new textfield, called "hisaxctrl", was added to the
ISDN Adapter tab. This field should contain the path to the hisaxctrl file.
The user now gets a warning before the program modifies system settings.
The user is now notified when a PCI ISDN adapter is found. Some layout
management was added for the settings dialog. The original system files are
now backed up before being replaced. A Dutch translation was added. A class
that finds local IP and online/offline status was added. More ISDN adapters

    [056] - Simkin 1.19 (Default)
      by Simon Whiteside (http://freshmeat.net/users/swhiteside/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 20:55

Simkin is a scripting language for Java/XML. Simkin is designed to let your
users control all or part of your Java application. They write scripts in a
very simple scripting language which can be embedded in XML. The scripts
can call down into the API you've exposed from your Java classes. You write
the mechanism, your users write the policy.

Changes: Line numbers were added to Runtime Exception. The local variable
cache was removed, since it could cause memory leaks if exceptions were
thrown. The ExecutableRoot trace() method now calls into the Interpreter
trace() method. This in turn calls either Tracer or a TraceCallback
registered with that instance of the Interpreter. StatementStepper is now
called for each statement executed. Operators were added for the "less than
or equal" operation ('le' and '='). A new "for" statement was added (e.g.
"for x=1 to 10 step 5"), as well as a "for each in " statement. The latter
is supported in the TreeNodeObject and XMLElementObject classes. Reader
load and save was added to XMLExecutable. addElement in XMLElementObject
now returns the newly created object. New methods were added to
TreeNodeObject to provide functionality similar to that of
XMLElementObject. Reflective method calls in the interpreter now fall back
to looking for String arguments in place of non-primitive types. A minor
change was made in the assignment code.

Simkin is a simple scripting language that can be used to customize C++
applications such as games. Scripts can be embedded within files such as
    XML or in databases.

Changes: Removing local variable cache (could cause problems if exceptions
are thrown), new skTraceCallback to capture all tracing output, new
skStatementStepper to be called for each statement executed, new
"less/greater than or equal to" operators, and a new for statement.

    [061] - star 1.4a02 (Default)
      by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 18:03

Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and writes
POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives. It
saves many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can
restore individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a
pattern matcher, multivolume support, the ability to archive sparse files,
automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order recognition,
automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives, and special
features that allow star to be used for full backups.

Changes: This release includes some small bugfixes, clears the fraction up
to 512 bytes at the end of each file to make archive more compressible, has
automatic recognition of signed checksums in archives, automatic
recognition and use of compression programs, will catch ^\ in networked
mode on Svr4 compliant systems, improves /etc/rmt server performance, and
has a better man page for the security features of rmt in /etc/default/rmt.

    [062] - sunclock 3.46 (Default)
      by Jean-Pierre Demailly (http://freshmeat.net/users/demailly/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 06:20

Sunclock is a sophisticated clock for the X Window system. It displays a
map of the Earth and shows which portion is illuminated by the sun. In
addition to providing local time for the default timezone, it also displays
GMT time, legal and solar time of major cities, their latitude and
longitude, sunrise and sunset, and the mutual distances of arbitrary
locations on Earth. Sunclock can display meridians, parallels, tropics, and
arctic circles. It has builtin functions that accelerate the speed of time
and show the evolution of seasons.

Changes: This version offers a preliminary screensaver functionality. It
also comes essentially at the end of the 3.4* development series, and
should therefore be much more stable than the earlier 3.4* releases - most
segfault bugs should have been ironed out.

The Tivo Web Project is designed to give you a Web interface to your TiVo
using Open Source software. The main reason for doing this is to create a
more powerful and flexible interface. Since the TiVo UI is proprietary,
there is no easy way to change or enhance it. With the relevant data in a

      by Bruce Guenter (http://freshmeat.net/users/bruceguenter/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 16:18

Twoftpd is an FTP server that strives to be secure, simple, and efficient.
None of the commands can cause execution of other programs, and the normal
model of execution does a chroot to the logged in user's directory
immediately after authentication. The name "twoftpd" comes from the fact
that there are two parts to the server: an authenticating front end,
which contains no file or data transfer code, and one of two back ends,
which contain all the data transfer code.

    [069] - WebPerformance Trainer 2.2, Build 277 (Default)
      by Michael S Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 21:28

WebPerformance Trainer is a load, stress, and performance testing tool for
web servers. It simulates thousands of individual users hitting a web
server at connection speeds between 14.4Kb/s and 100Mb/s. It supports URL
rewriting, dynamic form data, as well as multiple web servers and unusual
port numbers. Statistics are collected at multiple levels, from the
transaction down to the individual HTTP request. Users can view, edit, or
dynamically replace hidden data such as the HTTP request and reply headers.
Runs on Linux and Windows NT.

Changes: Fixes were made for a problem that prevented cookies from being
deleted, SSL recording problems with IE4, a cookie handling problem with
multiple set-cookie directives, a problem with 304 reply (not modified)
under SSL, a problem reading POST with no Content-Type header, a problem
with SSL sites running NT4 or any other server that doesn't return either a
Content-type or Content-length header, and a problem reading after the end
of the content which resulted in hangs during playback on small files.
ConnectionException is now handled with an error page. Recording speed was
improved. Recording a second business case no longer changes delay time
from the last URL of the first business case.

    [072] - xscorch 0.1.12 (Stable)
      by Justin David Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/justins/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 03:34

Xscorch is a clone of the classic DOS game "Scorched Earth". The basic goal
is to annihilate enemy tanks using overpowered guns. Players can purchase
weapons and accessories to defend their tank, and they can attack enemy
tanks by adjusting the angle of the tank's turret and the firing power.
Xscorch supports gameplay with humans and computer AIs, and network
    gameplay is in development.

Changes: A number of bugs were fixed, including bugs that prevented weapon
tunnelling from working properly. In addition, the tank styles were

      by José Orlando Pereira (http://freshmeat.net/users/jpereira/)
      Thursday, July 5th 2001 16:23

The XTL (Externalization Template Library) is a C++ library for
reading/writing structured data to/from an external (platform independent)
representation. Besides the usual C data types it also supports C++
constructs, such as pointers to base classes and template types (namely STL
containers). It can read/write XDR and CORBA CDR formats. The API is
somewhat modeled on the original XDR library by Sun, however, heavy usage
of templates and inline functions makes it faster, simpler and type-safe.

Changes: A bug involving endianness of 64 bit integers in XDR has been
