Linux Needs Java, and Vice Versa
    by Marc Boorshtein (mailto:mboorshteinyahoo.com)
    Section: Editorials
    Wednesday, July 11th 2001 00:00

In October, I wrote an editorial on why VB should not be brought to Linux.
One of the key points I touched upon was that VB's strengths lie in its IDE
and its ties to ADO, MTS, and now .NET. I said that good replacements for
VB were Python and Java. Now I would like to delve deeper into the
importance of Java on Linux, and the importance of Linux to Java.

    [001] - 6's Spiffy AudioGalaxy Query Tool 0.4 (Default)
      by 6 (http://freshmeat.net/users/num6/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 23:27

6's Spiffy AudioGalaxy Query Tool is a package that automates queries to
the AudioGalaxy music sharing system. It enables you to queue any song
(at a minimum configurable bitrate) with one command line, even if the
AudioGalaxy site is busy or unresponsive. It will also allow you to queue
most full albums with one command line, by going on AllMusic.Com to look
up the song list, and queueing up each of the songs listed.

Changes: A bunch of small additions that were requested by several users.

      by Cyberdude47 (http://freshmeat.net/users/Shadow47/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 22:33

ADSL4Linux is a program to install ADSL under Linux in the easiest way
possible. The install script consists of 3 easy steps and it does not
require any deep knowledge of Linux. It currently only works for MXStream
    by KPN in the Netherlands.

Changes: A total rewrite in C, lots of new functions, greater speed, great
stability, and better logging. The new firewall includes a confguration
file and uses the newest pptp (1.0.3).

      by Joshua Chamas (http://freshmeat.net/users/ayafm/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 18:26

Apache::ASP provides an Active Server Pages port to the Apache Web Server
with Perl as the host scripting language. Apache::ASP allows a developer to
create dynamic Web applications with session management and embedded Perl
code. There are also many powerful extensions, including XML taglibs, XSLT
rendering, and new events not originally part of the ASP API.

Changes: The biggest new feature is the ability to run in standalone CGI
mode under Apache on Unix without needing mod_perl. There are also other
    minor fixes and documentation updates.

    [009] - Catalog 1.03 (Default)
      by Loic Dachary (http://freshmeat.net/users/loic/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 14:16

Catalog allows to build and maintain Yahoo! style catalogs. It includes a
browsing interface and an easy to use template system for customization of
the HTML pages. It is fully documented and distributed under the GNU
General Public Licence. Catalog is also included in CPAN.

Changes: Symbolic links now have a name instead of borrowing the name of
the category to which they point. convert_dmoz handles UTF-8 dumps (the
whole procedure is simplified). New methods (treecbrowse and treecedit)
have been added that display the whole tree structure for people who have
catalogs that can fit on a single page. Ther are some bugfixes and sqledit
enhancements. GIF files have been translated to PNG. The problem with
displaying ISO-8859-1 accented chars in category names has been fixed.

      by Arien Malec (http://freshmeat.net/users/amalec/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 18:13

Check is a unit test framework for C. It features a simple interface for
defining unit tests, putting little in the way of the developer. Tests are
run in a separate address space, so Check can catch both assertion failures
and code errors that cause segmentation faults or other signals. The output
from unit tests can be used within source code editors and IDEs.

Changes: Includes a primitive logging function, the ability for an SRunner

      by Martin Cracauer (http://freshmeat.net/users/cracauer/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 18:25

cstream is a general-purpose stream-handling tool like UNIX dd, usually
used in commandline-constructed pipes. Features include sane commandline
switch syntax, exact throughput limiting on the incoming side, precise
throughput reporting, SIGUSR1 causes a throughput report before
end-of-file, built-in support to write its PID to a file, built-in support
for fifos, and built-in data creation and sink.

Changes: In/Outfile can now be a TCP socket (connect or listen), or an
Opensound-compatible audio device to play CD-format files. This release
properly supports 64-bit files in Linux/glibc. A tee-to-fd mode has been
added to send a copy of the stream to file descriptor 3. This can be used
in shell scripts to avoid the need to create a temporary file when you want
to filter a stream twice. Instead, copy it and redirect through subshells.

      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 04:05

    Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, well-documented remote-mail
retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over on-demand TCP/IP
links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It supports every remote-mail
protocol now in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3, RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all
flavors of IMAP, and ESMTP ETRN. It can even support IPv6 and IPSEC.

Changes: This release includes a correction for the backslash-handling
patch in rfc822.c, a fix for a problem under Debian where fetchmail config
fails to write the file after configuration, moving of .fetchmailrc to

      by FLASH Code Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/ljdursi/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 12:08

The FLASH code is a modular, adaptive, parallel simulation code capable of
handling general compressible flow problems in astrophysical environments.
It has been designed to allow users to configure initial and boundary
conditions, change algorithms, and add new physical effects with minimal
effort. It uses the PARAMESH library to manage a block-structured adaptive
grid, placing resolution elements only where they are needed most. It uses
the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) library to achieve portability and
scalability on a variety of different message-passing parallel computers.

      by projects (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirth/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 11:59

Forms for Metadot Web Portal is a web based forms package for the metadot
portal. From your browser you can define a form with checkboxes, radio
buttons, etc. Validate minimum length, max size, or against a regexp,
attach "help" to field, and usual forms package type stuff. Users can then
use the web to enter data according to your forms. It works within the
metadot portal environment (nice, flexible portal - gpl mod_perl mysql).

Changes: A new field, called Widgets:colour was added. Many to one

      by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 16:16

The FOLK project aims to provide a single patch which incorporates as many
Linux kernel projects as can be crammed in. Its goal is to allow people who
are interested in experimenting with the different projects to get on with
the experimenting, rather than spend time fixing clashing diffs. It also
has the goal of giving some of the more obscure projects a better chance of
being seen and used. It is not intended for "general use". If a given
release is stable, that will be by sheer luck. These are experimental
projects, of unknown quality and completeness, being thrown together in
ways that the developers are unlikely to have even remotely considered.

Changes: JFS and XFS have been updated. MOSIX, Multiple Root Patch, and
OneSigPerFD patch have been added. This is the first round of Real-Time

gEDA is a GPLed toolset to aid electronic design. Currently it consists of
a schematic capture program, a netlist generator, a symbol checker, and a
bunch of utilities. The initial goals are to satisfy the electronic
hobbyist needs, but the usefulness of gEDA does not have stop there. gEDA
has the future potential to be used for serious EDA work.

Changes: Major changes include a CVS reorganization, using noweb for the

    OpenGL board.

Changes: This release has been almost totally rewritten with a GTK

      by Aurélien Gâteau (http://freshmeat.net/users/bk12/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 16:23

Gwenview is a simple image viewer for KDE 2.0. Image loading is done by the
Qt library (so it supports all image formats your Qt installation
supports). It features a folder tree window and a file list and thumbnail
window to provide easy navigation in your file hierarchy and uses docked
windows, allowing you to alter the layout in any way you want.

Changes: A zoom in/out feature, "move" in file operations, a status bar
displaying folder and file information, and Opera-like previous-next mouse
navigation have all been added. You can now scroll the image by dragging
it. There are some other bugfixes. Thumbnail generation is now

    [028] - Hero Wars 20010710 (Main)
      by Charles Corrigan (http://freshmeat.net/users/CharlesCorrigan/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 12:17

Hero Wars implements the core rules of Issaries Inc.'s RPG System. It
supports the creation and storage of character sheets (including keywords)
and has rudimentary support for networked play. It requires one person to
be a narrator/game master and one or more players.

Changes: Drag and drop support on the character sheet window was cleaned
up. Truncation of results text in the contest window is now prevented.
Results text when switching between contest types was fixed. The
enabling/disabling of run/confirm/cancel/switch buttons was fixed. The
enhancement types for follower and passion spirit were fixed. The "Send to
Contest" action on character sheet ability was fixed. Some layout issues on
Mac OS X were fixed. A shutdown-hook was added to ensure that the user is
prompted to save open modified files. A problem with closing a modified
hero sheet opened from a URL was fixed. When the bid or enhancement size
are not acceptable, the "run contest" button is now disabled and the cursor
is moved to the problematic field. Other enhancement contest bugs were
fixed. Edit access to the actor and oppostion rating modifier fields in the
contest window is now allowed. Onscreen character sheets now show
Gloranthan icons rather than the default Swing icons. The display of the
contest window in 800x600 was improved.

      by Gerald Richter (http://freshmeat.net/users/richterg/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 03:53

HTML::Embperl gives you the power to embed Perl code in your HTML documents
and the ability to build your Web site out of small reusable objects in a
OO-style. You can also take advantage of hundreds of Perl modules which
have already been written for such tasks as database access to a growing
number of database systems. Embperl has several features especially useful
for creating HTML, including dynamic tables, formfield-processing,
escaping/unescaping, session handling, and more. Embperl is a server-side
tool, which means that it's browser-independent. It can run in various
ways: under mod_perl, as a CGI script, or offline.

Changes: This release includes many bugfixes which have greatly improved

      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 12:24

JFS for Linux is IBM's journaling filesystem, ported to Linux.

Changes: This release includes fixes to the file system and utilities.
There is now a patch being provided that will make it easier to move from
release 1.0.0 to 1.0.1. The patch file is call jfs-1_0_0-to-1_0_0.patch.gz.
The jfsprogs.spec file was updated to make it work on more distributions. A
"force" option was added to mkfs to avoid the confirmation message. fsck
was fixed to handle the index table on the root directory. The built
utilities are now placed in /sbin instead of /usr/sbin when using "make
install". A hang during copying files on the 2.2.x series was fixed. A
TxLock compile problem was fixed. The number of blocks for directories is
now correctly updated. A fix was made to prevent old data from being
written to disk from the page cache.

    [041] - mifluz 0.22 (Default)
      by Loic Dachary (http://freshmeat.net/users/loic/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 19:32

The purpose of mifluz is to provide a C++ library to build and query a full
text inverted index. It is dynamically updatable, scalable (up to 1Tb
indexes), uses a controlled amount of memory, shares index files and memory
cache among processes or threads and compresses index files to 50% of the
raw data. The structure of the index is configurable at runtime and allows
inclusion of relevance ranking information. The query functions do not
require to load all the occurences of a searched term. They consume very
few resources and many searches can be run in parallel.

Changes: Implementation of a result cache for mifluzsearch, a fix for a
mifluzsearch bug that prevented searching indexes where the document did
not start immediately after the word, a fix for a mifluzsearch bug that
ignored mandatory words that do not exist in the index, synchronization
with unac 1.4.0, and removal of obsolete benchmark results.

      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 12:27

mmmail provides SMTP and POP3 daemons using MySQL, running as non-root
user. No relaying support at this time, although it has been especially
made to handle many users on many virtual hosts. It is fast and secure,
using pthreads for multi-threading. It has been written entirely from
scratch and does not rely on mbox/maildir formats.

Changes: Some data integrity enhancements were made around a global lock to

    [045] - Nmap 2.54BETA26 (Development)
      by chillout (http://freshmeat.net/users/chillout/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 16:14

Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It supports
ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port scanning techniques
(determine what services the hosts are offering), and TCP/IP fingerprinting
(remote host operating system identification). Nmap also offers flexible
target and port specification, decoy scanning, determination of TCP
sequence predictability characteristics, sunRPC scanning, reverse-identd
scanning, and more. Console and X-Window versions are available.

Changes: Idlescan (IPID blind scan) has been added. The usage syntax is
"-sI ". A bunch of fingerprints that were corrupt due to violations of
the fingerprint syntax/grammar, a command line option parsing bug, and an
OS fingerprinting bug that caused many extra packets to be sent if you
request a lot of decoys have been fixed. Some debug code has been added to
help diagnose the "Unknown datalink type" error. If Nmap is giving you

      by jacK (http://freshmeat.net/users/amoizard/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 07:01

oSIP implements the Session Initiatiation Protocol (published by IETF as
RFC 2543). oSIP can provide signalling capabilities for IP phones. The
library provides a fully usable but not complete parser for the SIP
syntax (To, Via, From, CSeq, Contact, Call- ID). It also provides a
transactional interface which completely hides the retransmission
mechanism, reordering of request, UDP access, and other SIP transactional
    features.

Changes: This release includes minor bugfixes, and new documentation. In
addition, this version is usable on Solaris, and could be used on other

UML, compliance to the UML 1.3 standard, support for XMI as the standard
file format, the ability to export diagrams as GIF, PS, EPS, and SVG,
undo/redo, copy/cut/paste within the tool, drag and drop within the tool,
internationalization and localization for English, German, French, and
Spanish, code generation for Java, reverse engineering from Java sources,
auto-layout of reverse engineered diagrams, cognitive support, and a
discrete critique mechanism. Poseidon for UML seamlessly integrates into
Netbeans (3.2) and Forte for Java (3.0), and it is easy install and update
    with JavaWebStart.

Changes: This is the second public beta version and the first to be
announced on a large scale. New additions include a toolbar in the main
window, a progress dialog for loading and saving, an experimental zooming
feature, layout-on-demand, a new version of OCL-Editor, and enhancements to
the German localization. Bugfixes include a fix for XMI-Exceptions when
handling with attributes/methods, a fix for ZipException when handling
complex projects, a fix for Exception in undo stack, a fix for NPE when no
locale is set, and many more small fixes. Diagrams can now be safely
removed from a project. In Netbeans/Forte, a problem with disappearing
workspace tabs was solved. Netbeans/Forte buttons are now used whenever
    possible.

      by Jesse (http://freshmeat.net/users/jesse/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 00:08

RT is an industrial-grade trouble ticketing system. It lets a group of
people intelligently and efficiently manage requests submitted by a
community of users. RT is used by systems administrators, customer support
staffs, NOCs, developers, and even marketing departments to track issues,
outages, bugs, requests, and all kinds of other things at over a thousand
    sites around the world.

Changes: Better support for running in taint mode, fixes to attachment
processing, switching to Apache::Cookie for the mod_perl frontend, a
functional fastcgi handler, fixes to allow search-by-requestor to search
for requestors who don't have RT accounts, a fix for the weird sessiondata
permissions bug on Solaris, a fix to the Tickets.pm description of watcher
limits, a fix for a bug in webmux.pl that broke Apache::Cookie, cleanups to
SelectMatch and PickRestriction to clear up the UI issues with searching
for Tickets from a given requestor, and confirming that a change to
Ticket.pm made the importer work for at least one user who couldn't get

    [060] - shellsupport 2.0beta (Default)
      by Martin Cracauer (http://freshmeat.net/users/cracauer/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 18:23

shellsupport supports (bourne) shell scripting. It is a command line C
program that provides those features that are lacking when writing portable
shell scripts, because they are not covered by other portable (Posix
1003.2) tools. Amoung them are conversion routines from many ASCII date
representation formats to seconds since the epoch and vice versa, file
padding and wiping, symlink target display, random numbers, and counting.

Changes: This version comes with its own implementation of strptime (to
parse ASCII representation of time), derived from FreeBSD's implementation.
This should finally enable Linux/glibc users to parse the output of
date(1). Solaris users might find this useful as well. This will only work
for the C locale; national representations of date/time are no longer
supported. 2.0 also adds wiping of files (overwrite with zeros) and more
date formats to parse and display.

      by Britton Kerin (http://freshmeat.net/users/bkerin/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 22:55

soundgrab provides a cassette deck-like commandline interface (ff, rw, jump
to position) plus some other commands that let you easily select and save
your favorite parts of a big volume of raw audio (44.1 kHz 2 channel signed
16 bit little endian by default) in raw, cdr, or wav format. If you have a
favorite radio show that plays hard-to-find things at a time when your boss
insists you should be at work, you can record it, then come home later and
    save your favorite parts.

Changes: A new option to let you associate a time of day with the beginning
of a volume so you can jump to times of day as well as second offsets, flac
export works if you have the flac encoder, a new ability for the ff, rw,
jump, and browse commands to take arguments containing some units (e.g., f

      by VMD (http://freshmeat.net/users/vmd/)
      Wednesday, July 11th 2001 14:24

VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) is designed for the visualization and
analysis of biological systems such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipid
bilayer assemblies, etc. It may be used to view more general molecules, as
VMD can read standard Protein Data Bank (PDB) files and display the
contained structure. VMD provides a wide variety of methods for rendering
and coloring a molecule: simple points and lines, CPK spheres and
cylinders, licorice bonds, backbone tubes and ribbons, cartoon drawings,
and others. VMD can be used to animate and analyze the trajectory of a
molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In particular, VMD can act as a
graphical front end for an external MD program by displaying and animating
a molecule undergoing simulation on a remote computer.

Changes: This release contains a new sequence browser, a Ramachandran
plotting tool, support for Joysticks and Spaceball input devices, support
for OpenGL ARB multisample antialiasing extensions, POV-Ray orthographic
display support, greatly improved atom selection speed, elimination of some
