    [001] - Apache Toolbox 1.5.33 (Default)
      by Bryan Andrews (http://freshmeat.net/users/bandrews/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:18

Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache (IPv4/6) SSL,
PHP(v3/v4), MySQL, Jakarta, a large number of modules (61 3rd party modules
and 36 default Apache modules, static or as DSOs), and GD libraries with
PNG+JPEG+Freetype2+zlib support. It is fully customizable and menu-driven.
Everything is compiled from source, and wget is used to download any
missing modules. It can also check for RPMs that might cause problems and
create an RPM with your selections.

Changes: GD 2.0 support and bugfixes.

[002] - APC Alternative PHP Cache 1.0.10pl3 (Default)
      by George Schlossnagle (http://freshmeat.net/users/gschlossnagle/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 16:26

APC was conceived of to provide a way of boosting the performance of PHP on
heavily loaded sites by providing a way for scripts to be cached in a
compiled state, so that the overhead of parsing and compiling can be almost
completely eliminated. There are commercial products which provide this
functionality, but they are neither open-source nor free. Our goal was to
level the playing field by providing an implementation that allows greater
    flexibility and is universally accessible.

Changes: Compile problems on BSD and shmat() errors have been fixed.

    [003] - ArtGallery 1.0 (Stable)
      by dave (http://freshmeat.net/users/drs/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 21:25

ArtGallery is a Java applet that displays images and their descriptions
inside a Web page, simulating a real-world art gallery. It allows forward
and backward navigation and loads images only when they are requested,
thus minimizing initial download and startup time. Once downloaded, images
are cached so they do not have to be downloaded again for that session.
If an image is larger than the viewing area, scrollbars appear enabling
the user to scroll and see the full image.

      by Michael Witrant (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmbros/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 13:56

autocutsel automatically updates the two most-used copy/cut & paste buffers
existing in X. Some applications use the Primary Selection buffer (i.e.,
GTK), and some others use the CutBuffer 0 (i.e., VNC). This tool update the
buffers when one of them is modified.

    [005] - AutoDia 0.1 (Handlers & Parsers)
      by The Blue Jackal (http://freshmeat.net/users/TheBlueJackal/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:20

AutoDia is a Perl application designed to allow the easy creation of XML
diagrams from various data sources. The output is meant for use with Dia
(or any XML parser). AutoDia supports any language through the use of
handlers, and a good handler for Perl as well as a simple handler for C++
    are included.

Changes: A handler/parser for PHP is now available. It parses PHP pages and
adds support for them to AutoDia. AutoDia 0.9 or higher is required.

      by Andrew Sumner (http://freshmeat.net/users/andrewsumner/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 21:18

Awka is both a translator of AWK programs to ANSI C, and a separate library
against which the C code is linked. The aims of Awka are to allow creation
an executable that provides generally better performance than AWK
interpretors, to allow easy inclusion of AWK logic in larger C
applications, and use of external C functions within AWK scripts.

Changes: Networking features introduced in Gawk 3.1.0 are now supported by
Awka (causing change of license to GPL), and several other new Gawk
functions have been added. A new and much improved hashing method has been
adopted for arrays, Regular Expressions will execute a little quicker, and
where possible Awka will track the datatype of variables to optimise
    performance.

[017] - Extended SuperUser Socket Daemon 0.8.1 (Default)
by Víctor Manuel Jáquez Leal (http://freshmeat.net/users/ceyusa/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 16:14

XSUSockD is a daemon which runs non-interactive commands (e.g., system
commands). It reads a configuration file which specifies a hash table,
where you define an alias for every command that the deamon will be capable
to execute. The communication is under the local namespace (UNIX socket).
When a connection is established, the daemon forks and presents a
communication protocol, very similar to pop3's one. The user is
authenticated (using PAM), then the user sends the command-alias to execute
and quit. After every command-alias is executed, the daemons returns to the
user the exit code of the command. When the command is executed the
standard and error out are redirected to syslog.

Changes: Temporary file creation and syslog calls have changed, and another
    issues have been fixed.

    [030] - LOMAC 1.1.1 (Default)
      by Tim Fraser (http://freshmeat.net/users/timfraser/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 16:21

LOMAC uses Low Water-Mark Mandatory Access Control to protect the integrity
of processes and data from viruses, trojan horses, malicious remote users,
and compromised network server daemons. The LOMAC loadable kernel module
can be used to harden Linux systems without any changes to existing
kernels, applications, or configuration files. Due to its simplicity, LOMAC
itself requires no configuration, regardless of the users and applications
present on the system. Although some features and fixes remain to be
implemented, LOMAC presently provides sufficient protection to thwart some
attacks, and is stable enough for everyday use.

      by M. Rechenburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/waplocater/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:06

MOSIXVIEW, a GUI for MOSIX-Cluster, is a frontend for the most common used
mosctl commands. The Load-Balancing can be influenced by "speed-sliders"
and even remote processes are manageable. A mosixview-client installed on
    every cluster-node gives additional options.

Changes: This release has been ported to Qt-2.3. The mosix.map parser was
rewritten because of bugs, and it now supports the ALIAS-Option. Another
bug, where open directories were not closed, was fixed. All
methods/functions were rechecked. Processes from remote machines can now be

    [036] - motor 2.20.14 (Default)
      by Konstantin Klyagin (http://freshmeat.net/users/konst/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:06

Motor is a text-mode integrated programming environment for Linux. It
consists of an editor with syntax highlighting, a project manager, a
makefile generator, gcc, ctags, gdb, autoconf/automake and grep front-ends.
CVS integration is also provided. It allows one to edit, compile, and debug
programs without a need to leave the IDE, automatically check in/out files
from a CVS repository and import projects into CVS, and generate
distribution packages (tar.gz and RPM). The color schemes are customisable.

Changes: ./configure scripts check to see if make is GNU, and if it is,
uses it instead of gmake. The GNU copyright notice was added to every
source file. The -a, --ascii command line parameter was added. When
specified, motor draws its boxes and frames with ASCII characters, dashes,
and pipes, instead of using pseudo-graphics. A syntax highlighting problem
in the editor was fixed. C-style comments were not displayed correctly from
time to time; this has been fixed. The "Default directory for new projects"
parameter was added to the "Motor settings" dialog. A manual page has been

MusE is a Qt 2.1-based MIDI sequencer for Linux with editing and recording
capabilities. While the sequencer is playing you can edit events in
realtime with the pianoroll editor or the score editor. Recorded MIDI
events can be grouped as parts and arranged in the arrange editor.

Changes: A new menu option, Config-MidiInputTransform was added, though it
has not been tested very well, and channel & port transformations are not
implemented. Tracks can now have comments added to them. A bug in which the
score editor would sometimes eat up all memory on startup (rendering the
computer useless for a few minutes) was fixed. Some other smaller bugs were
fixed. A patch for the latest version of ALSA was added. Score postscript

    [047] - PHP Syntax Highlighter 1.04 (Development)
      by Mike Jewell (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjewell/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 23:49

PSH highlights and indents source code using highlight configuration files
(which are similar to Ultraedit highlighting files). As such, it currently
supports C, C#, Java, Perl, PHP, Pascal, Lisp, Mumps, Eiffel, Euphoria,
and x86 Assembler, amongst others. PSH handles line/block comments, keyword
highlighting, correct indentation, and string highlighting, as well as the
harvesting of comment text to allow for easy source code indexing.

Changes: A faster highlighter. removal of a number of bottlenecks,
conversion of the configuration files to PHP files with new converter
(speeds up initialization and provides greater flexibility), dynamic
keyword manipulation (all PHP functions can link to the PHP documentation

Changes: This release is faster, increases the default FIFO size, locks
FIFO in memory if run by root, checks for a noncompliant RMT server, and
fixes some bugs in the star RMT server.

    [057] - STLport 4.5b8 (beta)
      by Paul Marquis (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmarquis/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 21:05

The ANSI/ISO C++ specifcation includes a standard C++ library, also known
as the STL. GCC by default comes with an implementation that does not
comply with this standard, but instead partly implements an older version.
STLport is freely available version, based on the SGI STL implementation.
It is fully-compliant, supported, and very fast. Includes special debugging
facilities, and interesting and useful extensions to the standard.

    Changes: See Changelog.

    [058] - syslog-ng 1.5.8 (Development)
      by bazsi (http://freshmeat.net/users/bazsi/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:24

syslog-ng, as the name shows, is a syslogd replacement, but with new
functionality for the new generation. The original syslogd allows messages
only to be sorted based on priority/facility pairs; syslog-ng adds the
possibility to filter based on message contents using regular expressions.
The new configuration scheme is intuitive and powerful. Forwarding logs
over TCP and remembering all forwarding hops makes it ideal for firewalled
    environments.

Changes: This release contains new log processing modifiers instead of
    DEFAULT.

    [060] - Tech Tracker .85007 (Stable)
      by Anyah (http://freshmeat.net/users/jamesoden/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 05:11

Tech Tracker is a Web-based IT tracking system that strives to be simple to
administer and use, yet powerful. Its features include problem tracking,
hardware asset tracking, customizable lookup lists, varying levels of
access, user management from the Web interface, and the ability to import
    data.

Changes: Many bugfixes were made (installation and application bugs),
session log is viewable by the admin, and the queue shows the date and time
when an entry was opened or closed. The latter required a schema change, so
on an upgrade backup your database.

The Analyst is a Java program which extracts various bits of financial
    information from a publically-traded company's 10-Q and 10-K filings with
the U.S. SEC, and performs fundamental analysis calculations.

Changes: The TestRunner now looks for the current version of the test case
file instead of looking for version 0.1, and the MoneyExpert has been
improved to handle blanks in table rows.

[063] - The IPX Gimp Plugins 0.3.2 (Development)
      by Dan Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/dpape/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 04:50

The IPX Gimp Plugins package contains many plugins for the Gimp that are
geared towards image analysis, such as image sharpening, edge detection,
region growing, and a number of morphological algorithms.

Changes: This version should work with the new 1.2.x versions of Gimp, and
also brings the codebase closer to conforming to the recommended
    gimp-plugin-template source code.

    [064] - ThumbNails 1.0.5 (Default)
      by Al Evans (http://freshmeat.net/users/anejr/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 13:45

ThumbNails is an automated system for creating and maintaining web sites
containing large numbers of photographic images. It will go through a
group of directories filled with pictures, make thumbnail images of each
picture, make HTML pages for each directory showing clickable thumbnails
for each picture, and make an overall index.html document for the HTML
pages it creates. It has a daemon which can run in the background,
periodically checking the images directory and updating the site as
needed. It also includes an optional CGI script and output template, so
that the images can be shown in a background of your choice.

    [066] - VideoDog 0.13 (Development)
      by tuna (http://freshmeat.net/users/gleicon/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 05:02

VideoDog is a command line tool to grab frames from a Video4linux-compliant
device. It can export a file in raw, PNM, or JPG formats. It can also do
loop capture using multiple buffers, or just be used to set/retrieve device
data or scripts. It presents a programming interface for implementing image
transformations and effects. There are some examples in the source code. No
    external libraries are required.

Changes: A new config file, lots of new effects, TARGA image format for
saving TGA 24 bits images, a fix for a bug that doesn't allow input
changing and non-JPEG compilations to work properly (this bug does affects
the JPEG compile too with the loop option), fixes for some non-closed file
descriptors, a fix for another malloc/free bug, and commenting the effects

    [067] - VihmaUss 0.9 beta (Lightweight)
by Martini De La Rosso (http://freshmeat.net/users/moro/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:26

VihmaUss is a nice notepad-like application, meant for people who have to
remember many structurized things (like an API which is hard to get or
parts of your own source). It's tree-based and auto-saving/loading.

Changes: The GUI now works properly. Some small changes were made with the
tree and the menuchoice. Autosaving/loading now works completely. All note
files are now saved in the user's home directory.

    [068] - Visual Tcl 1.5.2 (Default)
      by Damon Courney (http://freshmeat.net/users/damonc/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 05:12

Visual Tcl (vtcl) is a visual application development environment written
entirely in TCL/Tk and generating pure TCL/Tk code. Therefore, both vtcl
itself and applications produced by it are 100% portable. It can import
existing TCL code, and can export TCLets which run inside Netscape or MSIE.

    [069] - Whitebeam 0.9.2 (Development)
      by Rob Pickering (http://freshmeat.net/users/rp44/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 16:08

Whitebeam is a frontend XML-centered rapid design environment which makes
use of HTML/XML and JavaScript. It integrates two popular and robust Open
Source platforms (Apache and Mozilla's SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine),
with its own powerful XML environment and security architecture. Providing
an extensible XML-based interface to backend objects on any platform, the
client model securely segregates thousands of customer applications within
    a single server.

Changes: The XML DOM problem when traversing an tag has been fixed, as
well as an rb:eval attribute-vanishing problem. Build targets for pgsql
templates have been improved. There are further make system cleanups. The
crypto code has been replaced so that local libraries get used, and there
is a separate crypto tarball (which prevents the question of distribution
legality). A much updated message template parses news/mail messages with
some degree of understanding, and now uses SMTP instead of spawning
    sendmail.

    [071] - wxPython 2.3.1 (Default)
      by rogue (http://freshmeat.net/users/rogue/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 14:15

wxPython is a Python extension module that wraps the wxWindows
cross-platform GUI library and provides an alternative to Tkinter and
PythonWin. It attempts to mirror the class hierarchy of wxWindows as
closely as possible and is very versatile. It can be used to create
standalone GUI applications or can be used in situations in which Python is
embedded in a wxWindows C++ application as an internal scripting or macro
language. The currently supported GUIs are Win32 and GTK/X-Windows.

Changes: wxTextCtrl can now have color and font styles applied to ranges of
text. Menus, dialogs, etc. can now be built from an XML resource. There
    are some bugfixes.

    [072] - Xdialog 2.0.3 (Default)
      by Thierry Godefroy (http://freshmeat.net/users/godefroy/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 07:20

Xdialog is designed to be a drop-in replacement for the dialog and cdialog
programs. It converts any terminal-based program into a program with an X
interface. The dialogs are easier to see and use, and Xdialog adds more
functionality such as a help button and box, a treeview, an editbox, file
and directory selectors, a range box, and a calendar. It uses GTK+, and
    will match your desktop theme.

Changes: This release includes new --ok-label and --cancel-label transient
options, Hungarian translations, and Debianizing of the source tree.

xsbrowser allows you to navigate a DTD or XML schema using a Web browser.
It hides the document model's representation syntax and shows only the
knowledge that is significant for the construction of valid documents.

      by robelix (http://freshmeat.net/users/robelix/)
      Thursday, July 12th 2001 21:13

YAC (Yet Another Counter) is a Web counter and logger written in Perl. It
counts only "real" visits, meaning that it increases the counter only if
there was no request from the same IP within one hour, but logs every page
hit. It has 3 output modes (graphic, text, quiet) and a configurable
minimum number of digits displayed. To avoid corrupt data it uses flock()
    for all file operations.
