    [001] - Alternate Password Library 1.0.0 (Default)
      by bpk (http://freshmeat.net/users/bpk/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 05:50

The library can be used by developers to quickly add alternate passwd
file support for virtual authentication, or by system administrators to
trick programs into seeing a different password file, either at run time
through the LD_PRELOAD variable, or at compile time with -laltpw during
    the linking process.

Changes: Initial release of libaltpw. Includes instructions on using it to
modify sendmail and procmail, to allow them to see only virtual users and
not real system users. Also includes a standard automake build process, and
options to enable paranoia for non-root users overriding the password, and
enabling syslogging of alternate password lookups.

      by seb (http://freshmeat.net/users/sebfrance/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 23:49

cafix lets you use your Casio calculator interface under linux, send and
receive files, and control your computer remotely using your calculator.

Changes: Gettext for messages in French, German, and Swedish, a doc
translation to French, fixes for two segfaults when sending or receiving a
file, new pc2casio.pl, renaming cafixconv to casio2pc, and new comSelect.sh
    to make /dev/casio.

      by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 17:29

Cdrecord creates home-burned CDs with a CD-R/CD-RW recorder. It works as a
burn engine for several applications. Cdrecord supports CD recorders from
many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc and ATAPI/mmc compliant drives
should also work. Supported features include IDE/ATAPI, parallel-port, and
SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed CDs, full multi-session
support, CD-RWs (rewritable), TAO, DAO and human-readable error messages.
Cdrecord includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote
    CD-writers.

Changes: Addition of forgotten printf.c changes that allow compilation on
Linux using GCC-3.0, and a driver entry for thr Taiyo Yuden EW-50 because
it has been reported that this drives needs swapped audio data.

    [004] - Cyrus SASL 2.0.2-ALPHA (SASLv2)
      by Rob Siemborski (http://freshmeat.net/users/robsiemb/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 23:53

The Cyrus SASL library is a generic library for easy integration of secure
network authentication to any client or server application. It supports
authentication via standard plaintext methods as well as CRAM-MD5 and
DIGEST-MD5 shared secret methods and KERBEROS_V4 and GSSAPI Kerberos
methods. The SASL protocol framework is used by SMTP, IMAP, ACAP, LDAP, and
    other standard protocols.

Changes: Bugfixes and feature enhancements, including the ability to build
a static library inclusive of all of the mechanisms, the ability to load
auxprop and canon_user plugins from shared objects, a first version of the
Java interface built off of the SASLv2 library, and much improved error
reporting. This release is only intended for developers who use the Cyrus
SASL library within their applications, and should not be used on any
    production system.

      Friday, July 13th 2001 02:18

dailystrips is a utility to download your favorite online comic strips each
day. What sets it apart from the rest is its "local" mode of operation,
which automatically downloads strips for you.

Changes: This release includes several new features, such as automatic use
of the strips.defs from the directory that the script is installed in, an
'exclude' keyword for groups, and personal definition files.

      by Fred Hirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/webmosher/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 23:51

DarkPortal is a project founded to create a Web portal system similar in
appearance to other portal projects (Slashdot, PHPNuke, PHPJ00K, etc.). It
uses a modular core as a base for adding pluggable modules to facilitate
    content creation and management.

Changes: Several new features including a rewrite of the Interface level
API object model, nearly-complete user management, and a number of critical
bugfixes to most areas of the interfaces.

    [007] - dircproxy 1.0.1 (Default)
      by Keybuk (http://freshmeat.net/users/keybuk/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 11:38

dircproxy is an IRC proxy ("bounce") server designed for people who use IRC
from lots of different workstations or clients, but wish to remain
connected and see what they missed while they were away. You connect to IRC
through dircproxy, and it keeps you connected to the server, even after you
detach your client from it. While you're detached, it logs channel and
private messages as well as important events, and when you reattach it'll
download those logs to you using ordinary IRC protocol.

Changes: This version contains mostly minor bugfixes. Log files no longer
lose their restrictive permissions when limiting length. High and control
characters at end of lines are no longer stripped from log files. DCC
capture should now work, and malloc() failure during DCC proxying should be
    caught.

    [009] - Enca 0.9.2 (Unstable)
      by David Necas (Yeti) (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeti2/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 11:17

Enca determines encoding of text files, provided you tell it their
language. Then it can convert them to other encodings, allowing you to
recode files without knowing their current encoding. It supports Czech,
    Russian, and Slovak encodings.

Changes: Deciding between similar charsets (iso8859-2/win1250,
maccyr/win1251) works again. The bug that was reporting all 7bit encodings
    as ASCII has been fixed.

    [010] - Ethereal 0.8.19 (Default)
      by Jeff Foster (http://freshmeat.net/users/jfoster/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 17:23

Ethereal is a network protocol analyzer, or "sniffer", that lets you
capture and interactively browse the contents of network frames. The goal
of the project is to create a commercial-quality packet analyzer for Unix,
and the most useful packet analyzer on any platform.

Changes: New dissectors include Appletalk Data Stream Interface, AUTH_DES,
DVMRP, GIOP, Gnutella, iSCSI, ISUP, M2PA, MP-BGP message, MSDP, MTP3, PAP,
PIMv1, RFC 2250 MPEG1, and for gamers, QuakeWorld and Quake II. Many other
dissectors were updated and bugfixed. The release adds a utility to convert
text hexdumps into pcap files(text2pcap), and a utility to merge multiple
captures into one file (mergecap). A powerful addition is the idl2eth tool,
which can generate a dissector from an IDL file.

    [011] - ferm 1.0pl8 (Stable)
      by sofar (http://freshmeat.net/users/sofar/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 17:17

ferm is a tool to maintain and setup complicated firewall rules. It allows
one to reduce the tedious task of carefully inserting rules and chains,
thus enabling the firewall administrator to spend more time on developing
good rules, and less time on the proper implementation of those rules.
These rules will be executed by the preferred kernel interface, such as
ipchains and iptables, and in one pass. Firewall rules can also be split
into different files and loaded at will.

Changes: Variable support, fixing nonexistent parameters for log-[ip|tcp]-,
strict keyword pattern matching, a new NOP action (for match-counting), a
new automodule option for automaticly loading correct modules, fixing -m
for mark in iptables mixo, fixes for relaxed matching tos values, fixes for
mark missing as normal target, and an updated manual page.

      Friday, July 13th 2001 00:13

LowCal is a lightweight Web-based calendar of events. It is designed to
allow you to announce events that have already been planned (it's not
"groupware" and doesn't do "calendaring") without requiring the
installation of PHP or a database backend. Events can be categorized and

      by Theo Van Dinter (http://freshmeat.net/users/felicity/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 00:34

mkrdns is a small Perl script which reads your named.boot or named.conf
file to find all domains/networks for which you are authoritative. It will
then read all of the forward zone files and generate the PTR records which
it inserts in the reverse zone maps. mkrdns will also do a few "lint"-like
checks and report oddities to you.

The Apache/Perl integration project brings together the full power of the
Perl programming language and the Apache HTTP server. With mod_perl it is
possible to write Apache modules entirely in Perl. In addition, the

    [034] - Perl webmail 2.2.15 (Default)
      by Jason Woodward (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaos/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 11:34

Perl webmail is a CGI script that interfaces with a POP mail server that
you provide. It can check mail, read messages, reply, forward, delete, send
and receive attachments, and it doesn't have to be a local mail server.
This script talks strictly POP3 for receiving and SMTP for sending mail.

Changes: The readmessage function was updated, which fixes the To and
Reply-To so that they actually display the header info. To, Cc, and Bcc
information was added to the sendmessage function within the message DATA
stream to support CC, Bcc, Reply-To, and to fix the missing To header. The
HTML was also updated to provide CC, Bcc, and Reply-To fields in the
message creation. The readmessage header info was rearranged to make it
easier to read with the extra fields. The CC and BCC entries were added in
the language packs (which will need translation). A Portuguese language
    pack was contributed.

    [036] - phpOpenFormGenerator 2.0Pre (Default)
      by Rufinus (http://freshmeat.net/users/rufinus/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 10:51

phpOpenFormGen uses simple definitions to create a form out of PHP code. It
is similar to OOH-Forms, a tool that comes with PHPlib. You can store
multiple form definitions in one file and simply use the function to
display it on screen. It includes server-side error-handling, multiple
language support, string-length checking, and more.

Changes: The code now uses an object-oriented style. Error checking is now
done in the PHP class. This is only a pre-release, and it may include many
    bugs.

    [037] - Radius 2.1.va.1 (Default)
      by Horms (http://freshmeat.net/users/horms/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 09:06

Livingston (now Lucent) is the premiere developer of the radius protocol
and also makes this radius daemon which is a full implementation of it. Its
purpose is to talk with Livingston Portmaster terminal servers (among
others, as radius is now a popular protocol that is implemented on all
terminal servers). It handles user authentication and accounting from
terminals servers. This is the first major BSD-licensed release in four
    years from Lucent.

Changes: Header files with function declarations were added to allow
compile-time type checking of function calls. All calls to strcat() and
strncat() were replaced with calls to strlcat(). All calls to strcpy() and
strncpy() were replaced with calls to strlcpy(). Implementations of
strlcat() and strlcpy() (taken from the OpenSSL project) are provided. All
calls to sprintf() were replaced with calls to snprintf(). C99-compliant
implementations of vsnprintf(), snprintf(), vasnprintf(), asnprintf(), and
sprintf() (taken from the Samba project) are provided. All fopen() calls
are preceded by a check to ensure that the filename only contains legal
character sequences. In particular, filenames containing ".." will not be
opened. Some calls to syslog() and the internally-defined log_msg() where a
format string may be derived from user input were removed. Some segmentaion
fault problems in the md5test and dbmkeys utilities were fixed. This
    version compiles cleanly with -Wall.

      Friday, July 13th 2001 11:07

ROX-Filer is a fast and powerful graphical file manager. It has full
drag-and-drop support and background file operations, and is highly
configurable. It can also act as a pinboard, allowing you to pin frequently
used files to the desktop background.

Changes: This release adds experimental support for GTK+ 2.0, including
support for anti-aliased fonts in most places. New File and New Directory
now have their own submenu, and you can add your own template files to the
menu. The 'Xterm here' command can now have arguments passed to it.

    [041] - SLAN 0.03 (Main)
      by cryptopup (http://freshmeat.net/users/cryptopup/)
      Friday, July 13th 2001 17:25

The SLAN project is focused on developing a flexible open source Virutal
Private Networking system, primarily for securing Internet uplinks which
use broadcast media such as 802.11 wireless links or public/shared
ethernets. The system is flexible enough to support traditional VPN
applications as well. As well as featuring an open design and strong
security, the SLAN project hopes to eventually provide support for all
    major computing platforms.

Changes: Several somewhat significant changes have been made, mostly
addressing usability issues. GNU autoconf is used for checking prerequistes
before build. A local copy of gmp.h is used when autoconf detects that a
GMP library is present on the system but the header file is not. Almost all
the informational or error messages printed on the console are syslogged,
and some more diagnostic messages have been added.
