    [001] - ALPINE Network devel-00030 (Development)
      by PureFiction (http://freshmeat.net/users/purefiction/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:05

The ALPINE Network is a peer-based application and network infrastructure
    designed for decentralized information location/discovery.

Changes: Two nasty bugs in the protocol stacks have been fixed. The SHA-1
hash protocol extension for query by SHA-1 ID has been added.

[002] - APC Alternative PHP Cache 1.0.10pl4 (Default)
      by George Schlossnagle (http://freshmeat.net/users/gschlossnagle/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 02:00

APC was conceived of to provide a way of boosting the performance of PHP on
heavily loaded sites by providing a way for scripts to be cached in a
compiled state, so that the overhead of parsing and compiling can be almost
completely eliminated. There are commercial products which provide this
functionality, but they are neither open-source nor free. Our goal was to
level the playing field by providing an implementation that allows greater
    flexibility and is universally accessible.

Changes: Fixed a major stability bug that was introduced in 1.0.10pl3.

    [003] - AutoDNS 0.0.4 (Default)
      by Jonathan McDowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/noodles/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 02:03

AutoDNS accepts GPG signed emails instructing it to setup secondary DNS for
domains and adds appropriate entries to the BIND configuration file in
    order to make this happen.

Changes: There are loads of changes in this release. The main feature
enhancements are the addition of deletion support, and a separate users
file. Minor security fixes in terms of checking of domain names, and
locking of file access. If you're using a previous version, you really want
    to upgrade.

    [004] - AWOL 1.0.1 (Default)
      by topher1kenobe (http://freshmeat.net/users/topher1kenobe/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 00:41

AWOL is an in/out board, similar to something you'd see on the wall of a
lobby or desk of a switchboard operator, to keep track of who's in the
building, when they'll be back, etc. It's accessable from the Web, so
people can mark themselves in or out from their own desk.

Changes: This release adjusts the auto-reload to reload the specified
group. There are no changes to the config.inc.php file, or to the table
    schemas.

    [005] - bind 9.2.0a3 (Bind9-Alpha)
      by Gael MARTINEZ (http://freshmeat.net/users/gaelik/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 00:40

The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) implements an Internet name server
for Unix operating systems. The BIND consists of a server (or `daemon')
called `named' and a resolver library. A name server is a network service
that enables clients to name resources or objects and share this
information with other objects in the network.

Changes: This is an alpha release of BIND 9.2.0, which contains a number of
new features over BIND 9.1. Several bugs have been fixed, and some minor
features have been added since 9.2.0a2. The OpenSSL library is no longer
included with the distribution. This means that to use DNSSEC, OpenSSL must
be installed, and the --with-openssl option must be supplied to configure.
This does not apply to the use of TSIG, which does not require OpenSSL.

    [006] - board-tnk 1.2.6 (Default)
      by Thierry Nkaoua (http://freshmeat.net/users/tnk/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 07:48

board-tnk is a discussion board written in PHP. It features very secure URL
checking, support for multiple forums (with only one level thread allowed
for each forum), use of cookies for showing users new messages since their
last visit and storing their information to simplify new posts, a choice of
smiley icons for each message, ability to use a subset of HTML within the
messages, multiple language support (english, french, dutch, italian, and
spanish), and a full admin page that allows you to create and delete
forums, entire threads, or answers from a thread. It is possible to prefix
the MySQL tables if only one database is allowed on an ISP server.

Changes: Added Italian translation. Corrected "bugs" in README, and also
    added README.FRANCAIS.

    [007] - C Scripting Language 4.1.0 (Default)
      by Peter Koch (http://freshmeat.net/users/kochp/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:50

C Scripting Language (CSL) is an embeddable scripting language with C
syntax. A comprehensive set of libraries is included in the base package,
and writing your own libraries is possible with an easy API for C programs,
as well as a class interface for C++ programs. If you are looking for a
compact and powerful scripting engine for your application, CSL might be
    the choice.

Changes: The project has been renamed to CSL. The code has been modified to
compile under various UNIX-ish systems. An ODBC interface has been added.

      by Rob Green (http://freshmeat.net/users/rbgrn/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 18:21

Camero is written in Python and uses an XML file for configuration. It
allows you to define as many portal (HTML) files as you want and give
various different attributes to each. It sorts the images by date and
displays as such. It is mostly intended for webcam portals, but could be
used for other applications. It is meant to be run by cron in the
background, as live generation would be ideal but too slow (must wait for
    server responses.)

    [009] - Compressed File Library r2 (Default)
      by Sol (http://freshmeat.net/users/SolHSA/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:44

CFL (Compressed File Library) is meant for the save-files used by games,
and other sorts of data files. Its features include pluggable class
factories, easy CFL file creation at runtime, and the ability to have
multiple separate CFL objects in memory at the same time. The package also
includes a CFL testing tool to make it easier to port the library and to
create additional plug-in compressors, preprocessors, and ciphers. It also
includes a makecfl utility, which makes it easy to create ini files.

Changes: The Zlib module now works with Zlib 1.1.3, and Delta preprocessor
    modules have been added.

    [010] - Deadman's Redirect 5.3 (Default)
      by riddley (http://freshmeat.net/users/riddley/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:07

Deadman's Redirect is designed to replace whatever it is your browser loads
when you click on the Home button in your browser. It is a web-surfer's
power tool that can be completely customized, using HTML, to fit the needs
of the user. It allows for URL redirection as well as an interface to
various search engines through its aliasing system. It also supports
user-set aliases with functional arguments, RSS headlines, and a history of
all the URLs that pass through it.

Changes: A bug with |notes| when no notes exist has been fixed. Error
handling in |include| has been improved. A |link| keyword for quick links
in views has been added. There are improvements to !*, and a bug involving
no arguments to |iframe| has been fixed.

    [011] - Dnsmasq 0.98 (Default)
      by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:49

Dnsmasq is small utility designed to provide DNS (domain name) services to
a small network connected to the internet via a NAT (network address
translation, AKA ip-masquerade) firewall and a modem connection. Since a
NAT firewall will pass DNS queries it's perfectly possible for all the
machines on such a network to be configured to talk directly to the ISP's
name server, but doing that has problems such as long timeouts when not
connected to the ISP. Dnsmasq provides a better solution which solves the
    problems.

Changes: This release contains minor fixes and enhancements. The IP source
address is always set correctly in replies, even on multi-homed and IP
aliased hosts. A crash which occurred if a server loop was created (ie
dnsmasq is set to forward to itself.) has been fixed. DNS queries are
generated with unpredicatable IDs to thwart spoofers. The PID file is no
    longer created as world writable.

GKrellKam is a plugin for GKrellM that displays a periodically updated
image, such as a static webcam picture, scaled to fit in a panel.

Changes: This release is much easier to configure (give it a webcam address

      by Xavier Roche (http://freshmeat.net/users/xavierroche/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 18:16

HTTrack is an easy-to-use offline browser utility. It allows you to
download a Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building
recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the
server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative
link-structure. Simply open a page of the mirrored Web site in your
browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were
viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and
    resume interrupted downloads.

Changes: This release includes parser optimizations (10 times faster now),
an --assume option to speed up CGI tests, an option to avoid
Username/password storage for external pages, and keeping of the query
string for local URIs. RFC2396 compliant URLs are accepted (//foo and
http:foo). foofoo.com is not considered a URL any more. Spaces are now
encoded into %20 in URIs. The "Unable to save file" bug, corrupted top
index.html, and the cache bug for error pages have all been fixed. Cookies
    are disabled with --get.

      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:53

Mod_survey is an Apache mod_perl module which allows users to create their
own Web questionnaires using an XML-based tag notation. It supports
exporting of data into several file formats, including SPSS syntax,
semi-colon delimited fields, and SQL script. It also provides limited
support for descriptive statistics of the submitted data, and stylesheet
    customizations of layout.

Changes: A bug that was breaking Perl connectivity has been fixed. PHP
connectivity has been added, as well as an example of how to use it. There
    are minor documentation updates.

      by Thomas R. Koll (http://freshmeat.net/users/TomK32/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 14:59

My Secret Diary is a diary or news application. It is written in PHP
(version 4 is required), and it uses files to store its data instead of a
database. It uses templates and a global configuration file to make it easy
to install and easy to upgrade. You can edit and delete the entries through
a Web interface. It also features a list with the best entries, a comment
system, and two different view-modes. It also has a few special tags for
URLs, emails, quotes, and images. Its source is modularized, and it
features a lot of comments, making it a good example for anyone who wants
    to learn PHP.

Changes: Some features have been added, and two bugs were fixed.

systems. It can quickly monitor up to thousands of sites/devices at a time
on multiple ports. nPULSE is written in Perl and comes with its own (SSL
optional) Web server for extra security.

Changes: This version bundles together all of the changes in the
developmental releases of nPulse since version 0.52. The primary updates
are better EventLog handling, and a major bug fix of the historical
record-keeping and historical display graphics. Internally, the code has
been substantially rewritten (except autorecheck.pl). In total there are 5

    [033] - PCGen 2.0.5 (Default)
      by Bryan McRoberts (http://freshmeat.net/users/mertonmonk/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 23:35

PCGen is a free Java 1.3.x-based character generator aimed at supporting
d20 roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition and Star Wars.
It is highly configurable by the users, allowing the Dungeon Master to add
or remove races, classes, feats, etc., and to implement house rules such as
differing class or race restrictions. Level advancement is also supported,
with configurable progressions of feats, skills and ability score bonuses.
For "at the table" support, PCGen offers a set of options that allows the
user to produce a customized character sheet, which can then be viewed in,
or printed from, the user's WWW browser. It can also produce a "party"
sheet with the information needed by the DM.

Changes: A splash image when loading, a menu-driven GUI, and Psionics have

    [034] - PCX Firewall 2.4 (Stable)
      by James A. Pattie (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcxuser/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:50

PCX Firewall is an IPTables firewalling solution that uses Perl to generate
static shell scripts based upon the user's configuration settings. This
allows the firewall to startup quickly, as it does not have to parse config
    files every time it starts.

Changes: The generator now places generated scripts in a directory named
after the rules file used (output for Rules.pm). The installation has been
updated to handle pulling the files from different directories. This is to
support multiple machines and for the future web configuration interface
    being developed.

    [036] - PHP Syntax Highlighter 1.05 (Development)
      by Mike Jewell (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjewell/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 23:24

PSH highlights and indents source code using highlight configuration files
(which are similar to Ultraedit highlighting files). As such, it currently
supports C, C#, Java, Perl, PHP, Pascal, Lisp, Mumps, Eiffel, Euphoria,
and x86 Assembler, amongst others. PSH handles line/block comments, keyword
highlighting, correct indentation, and string highlighting, as well as the
harvesting of comment text to allow for easy source code indexing.

Changes: Approximately 240 new highlight files in the list including
Delphi, several assembler variants, matlab, ocaml, modula, and many others
on top of the currently-supported languages, a more object-oriented design,
each highlight configuration extends the core PSH class so you can mix and
match languages in a single script, numerous small bugfixes, a mild
optimization on delimiters, and PSHConv updates to handle the new
    structure.

    [038] - phpWebPlan 0.2.0-pre2 (Stable)
      by (2B) - Tobias Mathes (http://freshmeat.net/users/areska/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 00:36

phpWebPlan shows predefined user profiles. It is written in PHP4 with
parsing text files, so you don't need any Database like mSQL or MySQL. Its
main feature is that users are able to activate/deactivate and edit their
own profiles (an Administrator can configure the script via remote with a
webinterface). The main target is it to have a fully administrable and
modular script, which is easy to handle for both users admins.

Changes: A Bug at "phpWebPlanAdmin.php" with the new login form option is

    [039] - Plasma EBG 0.26.14 (Main-linux)
      by Konstanty (http://freshmeat.net/users/metaplasma/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:08

Plasma EBG is an empire building game with an isometric view. It runs in
multiple resolutions with graphics being displayed better for higher
resolutions; hence, lower resolutions do not suffer from being too large,
etc. In the future several viewing engines will be available, such as
EBG-opengl and EBG-2d. There is a separate module called EBG-dev which
features the latest AI-development, as well as a separate server module.

Changes: Allegro version 3.9.37 is now used as a base library; the EBG

      by Stefan (http://freshmeat.net/users/steba/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:41

Popsneaker is a mailfilter for remote filtering of POP3 email accounts. It
is mostly useful for computers which have a dial-in connection to the
internet. You can define rules to select emails, which you don't want to
download to your local box. This is a simple and effective way to get rid
of spam, advertisings and other kinds of unwanted mail. The filter rules
are very flexible and powerful, but still easy to handle. The main
ruletypes are using regular expressions to deny, to accept or to make an
    assumption on the mail.

Changes: The login name can be set on the command line. A filterscript can
be applied on a subset of headerlines. A filter for duplicated mails has
been implemented. A bug in logging and a bug in the popsneakerrc scanner
have been fixed. There are more examples in the filter script. The date

      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:09

pxtools is a collection of tools to work with a Paradox-database. It
consists of pxinfo, pxsqldump and pxcsvdump. pxinfo scans the header of a
specified database-file and dumps the important informations on the screen.
pxsqldump is a utility to extract the data from Paradox-database. The
output is a SQL-dump that can be used to recreate the database in an
SQL-enviroment. It dumps the 'CREATE TABLE' and the 'INSERT INTO'-commands
to create the database. pxcsvdump is a brother of pxsqldump and produces
    CSV-tables.

Changes: A segfault in the TIME/DATE/TIMESTAMP conversion code has been

    [043] - Pyui 0.5 (Development)
      by MrRiley (http://freshmeat.net/users/MrRiley/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 00:39

Pyui is a user interface library written entirely in Python that uses the
pygame framework. It is targeted primarily as a user interface for games
but could be applicable to other types of multimedia applications. Pyui is
very portable, as pygame is built on top of the SDL (which runs on Linux,
    Windows, and Macintosh operating systems).

Changes: PyUI now runs under OpenGL, providing a cross-platform hardware
accelerated User Interface library written entirely in Python. The 0.5
release adds this OpenGL capability while retaining the previous 2D drawing
mode as an option. This release is significantly faster, as it can utilize
OpenGL drawing hardware, but the underlying functionality has only had
    minor changes applied to it.

    [050] - Serveez 0.1.0 (Default)
      by Stefan Jahn (http://freshmeat.net/users/ela/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 04:09

Serveez is a server framework which provides routines and help for
implementing IP-based servers (TCP, UDP, and ICMP). It is also possible to
use named pipes for all connection-oriented protocols. The package includes
a number of servers that work already: an HTTP server, an IRC server, a
Gnutella spider, and some others. One of the highlights is that you can run
all protocols on the same port. The application itself is single-threaded,
but it uses helper processes for concurrent name resolution and ident
    lookups.

Changes: Serveez comes now with an embeddable library, containing the core
API of the package. We provide a semi-automatically created core API
documentation for this reason. The co-servers are now an integral part of
this library. Serveez uses GNU Guile as its configuration language. This is
why we dropped Sizzle, since its maintainer enclosed its development.

    [054] - The One Ripper 0.95 (Default)
      by Devon Jones (http://freshmeat.net/users/hunterd/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 02:14

The One Ripper is a program for ripping and encoding MP3 files from CDs. It
has many advanced features, including background encoding, as well as
queuing of files to be encoded, ID3v1 and ID3v2 tagging, CDDB for track
naming, easy renaming of tracks from CDDB (to make dealing with
multi-artist CDs easier), flexible file naming, a choice of multiple
encoders (LAME, Oggenc, BladeEnc, and Gogo), and a choice of multiple
rippers (cdparanoia, cdda2wav, and dagrab). Also includes some mp3
    utilities.

Changes: Added tools to handle remixes and soundtracks. Added type - which
is placed in the id3v2 tag (TMED) - and remixer (TPE4). Added rules for
putting type or remixer into the file name, and added a new type of
filename rules. Also added a utility called id3retag, and another called
id3musicdir. Removed the dependancy on Mail::Internet and Mail::Header.

    [055] - threads 3.2 (Development)
      by hansen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hanseno/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 23:21

Threads is a library designed to make threading under C++ simpler. It
provides a "pthread" class, with an abstract method called "thread". It
also provides classes for mutual exclusion of parallel processes and
condition signalling, and a semaphore class that comes in handy when
synchronizing constructor and threaded method. The aim of the threads
library is to provide a simple, yet powerful means of threading
applcations, and to provide shared memory and process scoping to C++
    programs.

Changes: Changed signal handling to run alongside pthreads, a new stack
context class, name convention changes, and non-fatal exceptions can return
    to thrower (experimental).

    [056] - ThumbNails 1.0.6 (Default)
      by Al Evans (http://freshmeat.net/users/anejr/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 02:07

ThumbNails is an automated system for creating and maintaining web sites
containing large numbers of photographic images. It will go through a
group of directories filled with pictures, make thumbnail images of each
picture, make HTML pages for each directory showing clickable thumbnails
for each picture, and make an overall index.html document for the HTML
pages it creates. It has a daemon which can run in the background,
periodically checking the images directory and updating the site as
needed. It also includes an optional CGI script and output template, so
that the images can be shown in a background of your choice.

Changes: Modified daemon to behave correctly when toplevel pictures
directory is empty. Changed MakeThumbnails.pl to refuse to process images
in toplevel pictures directory, and to ask user to move them into a
subdirectory. Changed LocalConfig.pl and MakeThumbnails.pl to allow users
to specify graphics format of thumbnail images. Changed MakeThumbnails.pl
to sort its lists of directories and images.

    [057] - Triangle Boy 1.0.3 (Stable)
      by Aram Antaramian (http://freshmeat.net/users/aram/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 18:13

Triangle Boy (tboy) is a packet re-routing application which runs under
Linux. Once tboy is installed on a machine, it becomes a portal to
www.safeweb.com (thus, to the rest of the Internet). Internet users who are
blocked from reaching safeweb.com can make an end run around the blocking
software by pointing their browsers to a running tboy client. Since Safeweb
is an anonymizing proxy service, the installation of large numbers of
working tboys thwarts all attempts at selectively limiting access to the
Internet. Countries and businesses which block access to certain Web sites
will no longer be able to do so, even if they block access to
www.safeweb.com. Tboy only routes packets coming from a client. Response
packets coming from www.safeweb.com do not pass through tboy; instead, they
are sent directly to the client. In this way tboy uses very little
bandwidth on the machine on which it is running.

Changes: Handling of dynamic IP addresses has been improved, and some minor
    shutdown bugs have been fixed.

    [058] - ttylinux 1.8 (Default)
      by Pascal Schmidt (http://freshmeat.net/users/cobol/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:05

ttylinux is a minimalistic Linux distribution that can fit in 4 MB of disk
space. It contains software needed to log into an ISP by modem, surf the
Web, and provide Web content to the world. The minimum hardware requirement
is a 386SX with 10 MB of RAM for a ramdisk setup or 5 MB of RAM for a hard
    disk setup.

Changes: This release updates busybox (new adjtimex and cpio applets), e3,
links, and util-linux to their latest versions.

    [059] - vgrabbj 0.7.3 (Default)
      by Jens Gecius (http://freshmeat.net/users/geci/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 18:23

vgrabbj grabs a frame from the videodevice and writes it as a JPG/PNG to
stdout or a file, which makes it ideal for a Web cam. It supports
timestamping, can run as daemon, and shows the current settings of a video
    device.

Changes: Several palettes have been added to recognized V4L formats (RGB24,
RGB32, YUYV, YUV420, and YUV420P). The logging ability has been enhanced.

    [061] - xscorch 0.1.13 (Stable)
      by Justin David Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/justins/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 15:02

Xscorch is a clone of the classic DOS game "Scorched Earth". The basic goal
is to annihilate enemy tanks using overpowered guns. Players can purchase
weapons and accessories to defend their tank, and they can attack enemy
tanks by adjusting the angle of the tank's turret and the firing power.
Xscorch supports gameplay with humans and computer AIs, and network
    gameplay is in development.

Changes: A number of bugs in the interface have been fixed. New types of
shields (magnetic and force) have been added, and players can select which
type of shield to energize. There are two new items, Solar Panels and the
Shield Sapper, which can reinforce your shields and damage opponent
shielding. Also, several enhancements have been made to the computer AIs.

      by Martin Blais (http://freshmeat.net/users/blais/)
      Saturday, July 14th 2001 16:43

xxdiff is a graphical browser for viewing the differences between two or
three files, or between two directories, and can be used to produce a
    merged version.

Changes: There is a workaround for allowing ":" in the clipboard text
string, an infinite loop with clipboard text has been fixed, "open file"
has been renamed to "replace file", the window class name is now present,
implementation of scrolling from the overview area has begun, a logical bug
in ignoring horizontal whitespace has been fixed (should be much better
now), and the ignore file option in 2-way diff mode has been removed.
