      by DaveSource (http://freshmeat.net/users/daveola/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 07:32

About: album is a free HTML/XHTML photo album generator that supports
themes/skins. You can choose different themes or write your own to get
different layouts and styles. It automatically crops your thumbnails, so
that they are all the same shape, and it descends into directories so you
can organize your photos. See the home page for more examples - N.B. The
purchase link is provided for donations, the software does not cost
    anything.

Changes: This release includes better support for people creating file://
accessible albums, use of a relative theme images path instead of absolute,
and -index can now force album to add "index.html" on the end of URLs.
Themes have also been overhauled too, and the simmer_theme program for
    writing themes has been updated.

    [010] - DansGuardian 1.1.4
      by Daniel Barron (http://freshmeat.net/users/dansguardian/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 21:39

Categories: Internet, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Security, System :: Networking
    :: Monitoring

About: DansGuardian is a filtering proxy that uses Squid to do all the
fetching. It filters using four methods: First, it checks the actual
content of the pages against a configurable list of denied phrases. Second,
it implements PICS filtering. Third, it checks the MIME type of the
requested file against a configurable list of denied types. Fourth, it
checks the file extension of the requested file against a configurable list
of denied file extensions. The filtering has a configurable URL exception
list. It provides filtered, configurable logging which logs in a very
human-friendly format. It can be configured to only log text-based pages,
thus significantly reducing redundant information such as every image on a
    page.

Changes: Content filtering, extension blocking, and proxy testing problems
have been fixed. There have also been some minor features added.

About: IceBreaker is a game involving a bunch of penguins on an iceberg in
Antarctica. You have been selected to catch them so they can be shipped to
Finland, where they are essential to a secret plot for world domination.
IceBreaker was inspired by (but isn't an exact clone of) Jezzball by Dima
    Pavlovsky.

Changes: This release has a significant gameplay change: when a
partially-completed line hits another partially-completed line, it no
longer completes, but instead waits for the other to complete or be
destroyed. This makes the game much harder, in a good way. Also, high score
writing has been changed to take multiple simultaneous users into account.

Categories: Communications, Communications :: BBS, Communications ::
Conferencing, Communications :: File Sharing, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site
Management, Office/Business, Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: IntraGnat is a project management/Intranet tool that lets you create
projects, assign team members, add project-specific BBSs with integrated
file transfer, and manage all your company staff personnel in one central
location. The admin can set access levels so each department has functions
to do different admin tasks (create projects, post news, send global notes,
    edit staff profiles, etc).

Changes: The activities were separated from the contact area, and have been
given their own folder space. Activity history viewing was added. Some
internal folder placements were restructured for easier setup. A file
renaming patch was applied in the virtualdrive file properties. The
activity-related code was optimized. The schedule filtering API was changed
when viewing "today" and "future" activities.

    [025] - Java Serialization to XML 0.8.14.1
      by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 06:10

About: JSX (Java Serialization to XML) gives you XML persistence and
communication. You need not change your classes or design schema or write
scripts. It just works - even if your classes have changed in the meantime.
Usage is as for Java's own Serialization. JAXB, Jato, and Castor can
require considerable setup, and Swing Serialization to XML only works for
Java Beans. JSX works for all objects, handles evolution of classes, and
needs no setup at all. You can just delegate the whole XML-side to JSX.

Changes: The NaN, -Infinity, and Infinity values for floats and doubles are
    now parsed correctly.

Using Jess, you can build Java applets and applications that have the
capacity to "reason" using knowledge you supply in the form of declarative

    [030] - Lesstif 0.92.95
      by Danny Backx (http://freshmeat.net/users/dannybackx/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 12:25

About: LessTif is an LGPL'd implemention of the OSF/Motif standard GUI
toolkit for X11. LessTif aims to be source compatible with the OSF/Motif
versions 1.2 and 2.1. Currently 1.2 support is almost complete and most
Motif 1.2 apps should compile and run out of the box, whilst 2.1 still has
    very little functionality.

Changes: The documentation was enhanced. The list of platforms where
LessTif can be built on was updated. mwm fixes/enhancements were made.
Inter-library dependencies (libtool 1.4 related) were dropped. The build
process now checks whether to link against -lXp -lXext when using 2.1 Motif
libraries. dmalloc debugging support was fixed. Some files missing from the
test/ tree in the tarballs were added. Smaller configuration and Makefile
issues (portability fixes). Support for configuring and building Xlt and
Xbae removed from within the LessTif distribution was removed. Xlt and Xbae

      Thursday, July 19th 2001 08:20

About: MasqMail is a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) designed for hosts that are
not permanently connected to the Internet. It handles outgoing messages
specially and delivers them only when explicitely told to do so in the
ip-up script. It can also retrieve mail via pop3. It has support for
multiple providers. When offline, it behaves like any MTA (like, for
example, sendmail, though it's not as powerful as sendmail).

Changes: This release fixes a security bug (Debian#102092), a UIDL bug, and
some other bugs, SIGPIPE is now ignored, the number of child processes

    [036] - MIMEDefang 1.3
      by David F. Skoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/dskoll/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 16:12

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME e-mail scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. It can alter or delete various parts of a
MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can also
bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11's new "Milter" API, which gives it much more flexibility than
    procmail-based approaches.

Changes: This release has an improved autoconf script which should work
with Sendmail 8.12. An "append_boilerplate" action has been added to append
boilerplate text to outgoing mail. A "-test" feature has been added to test

    [041] - Nullcraft Portal Development Kit 0.5.1
      by Mark (http://freshmeat.net/users/mujolo/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:09

About: Nullcraft Portal Development Kit is a tool for Web developers to
quickly and easily integrate several heterogeneous applications and news
sources together into a multi-page portal layout. It takes advantage of a
J2EE environment, yet still allows web developers to develop and maintain
CGI and other applications. The main display format is via a JSP page
that uses JSP custom tag libraries to generate the dynamic layout. This
layout mechanism uses features from JSP 1.2 spec. The "native" development
environment for backend modules will be Java 2 Servlet/JSP. J2EE security
components will be made available to all applications accessed via the
Portal. News channels can be managed using RDF (RSS) files. Configuration
via XML files or JDBC connection will both be available options. Each
backend component type has it's own Plugin for configuration and
    execution.

Changes: The most significant feature enhancement in this version is a new
CGI plugin. This plugin supports GET requests in this version, but future
versions will also support POST. A security bug where the user's
credentials were not checked prior to performing several administrative
tasks was fixed. More documentation was added. Whitespace in Module and
Operation names is no longer allowed. A sample Perl CGI app (whois.bw.org)
is included as an example of the CGI plugin. A URL mapping was added to
allow for cleaner URLs such as Dispatch/foo/bar in addition to
    Dispatch?mod=foo&op=bar.

allows local and remote users to control what music is being streamed by
the server, and includes support for browsing the music collection,
playlist mangement, and an automatic music selection mechanism called DJ
Random. The package also includes scripts to do one step ripping, encoding,
and submission into the database. The server allows remote MP3
check-in/check-out and a supplied script allows downloading a playlist from
the server into a Rio player.

Changes: An improved DJ Random track selection algorithm to ensure that no
tracks are played twice before the entire set is played, a new playlist
manager to make adding/removing/moving tracks to a playlist easier, a top

    [047] - pyPgSQL 1.3 (Stable)
      by Bill Allie (http://freshmeat.net/users/bgallie/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 12:11

Categories: Database :: Front-Ends, Software Development :: Libraries

About: pyPgSQL is a package of two modules that provide a Python DB-API 2.0
compliant interface to PostgreSQL databases. The first module, libpq,
exports the PostgreSQL C API to Python. This module is written in C and can
be compiled into Python or can be dynamically loaded on demand. The second
module, PgSQL, provides the DB-API 2.0 compliant interface and support for
various PostgreSQL data types, such as INT8, NUMERIC, MONEY, BOOL, ARRAYS,
etc. This module is written in Python and works with PostgreSQL 6.5.2 or
later and Python 1.5.2 or later. pyPgSQL was previously released under the
    name 'PgSQL'.

Changes: The PgInt2 and PgInt8 type objects (formerly implemented as Python
classes) were re-implemented in C. The PgInt8 C implementation will only be
used if long_longs are supported in your architecture, otherwise a Python
implementation (based on Python's long type) will be used. There were also
    minor bugfixes and performance improvemts.

    [049] - SCMxx 0.5.2
      by Hendrik Sattler (http://freshmeat.net/users/hsattler/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:56

About: SCMxx is a console program that allows you to exchange certain types
of data with mobile phones made by Siemens. Some of the data types that can
be exchanged are logos, ring tones, vCalendars, phonebook entries, and SMS
messages. It works with the S35i, M35i, and C35i, but other models (like
S25) can also be supported. It basically uses the AT command set published
by Siemens (with some other additional resources).

Changes: SMS messages can be directly received without being stored in the
phone first, and an alphanumeric From: field is now detected and decoded.
The output is now more detailed about PDU and DCS. GMT is now only decoded
when it is certain the result is correct, and the DCS field is now decoded
in the right way (it now finds all 7bit, 8bit and 16bit messages). Only
    7bit messages are decoded, though.

      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:52

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
It saves many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can
restore individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a
pattern matcher, multivolume support, the ability to archive sparse files,
automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order recognition,
automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives, and special
features that allow star to be used for full backups. It includes the only
known platform independant "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
    contact any OS as server.

Changes: The unified remote file name syntax has been improved. star now
refuses to archive unsupported file types depending on the archive format.

      Thursday, July 19th 2001 10:17

About: Init is the parent of all processes. Its primary role is to create
processes from a script stored in the file /etc/inittab. This package also
contains well known and used utilities like reboot, shutdown, killall,
    poweroff, tellinit, sulogin, wall, etc.

    [057] - ThumbNails 1.0.7
      by Al Evans (http://freshmeat.net/users/anejr/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:49

About: ThumbNails is an automated system for creating and maintaining web
sites containing large numbers of photographic images. It will go through
a group of directories filled with pictures, make thumbnail images of each
picture, make HTML pages for each directory showing clickable thumbnails
for each picture, and make an overall index.html document for the HTML
pages it creates. It has a daemon which can run in the background,
periodically checking the images directory and updating the site as
needed. It also includes an optional CGI script and output template, so
that the images can be shown in a background of your choice.

Changes: Date and time have been added to the progress and error messages.
Image file detection has been fixed so that it isn't confused by a file
with the string "image" in its name. The name of the offending file is now
added to the error message printed when an image file is found in a
    top-level directory.

    [058] - Tvark 0.2
      by Fenris (http://freshmeat.net/users/tvark/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:52

Categories: Security, System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Tvark is a network monitoring tool (sniffer) with a GUI front-end,
and is tied to a MySQL database. The GUI provides a view of traffic
activity that can be seen from the machine/interface that Tvark is run
on. What you see is a list of source nodes on the left, destination nodes
on the right, and lines drawn, left to right, showing traffic flow. Tvark
runs in "realtime", meaning you see the traffic roughly as it happens.
There is a small delay between actual traffic flow and the display.

Changes: This is mostly a bugfix release. DNS data is now cached to reduce
network traffic. Some filtering functionality was added.

    [060] - unac 1.5.0
      by Loic Dachary (http://freshmeat.net/users/loic/)
      Thursday, July 19th 2001 14:51

About: unac is a C library and command that removes accents from a string.
For instance, the string été will become ete. It provides a command line
interface that removes accents from standard input or from a string given
as an argument. In the library function and the command, the charset of the
input is specified as an argument. The input is converted to UTF-16 using
iconv(3), accents are stripped, and the result is converted back to the
original charset. The iconv --list command on GNU/Linux will show all
charsets supported. It currently has Perl, PHP3, and PHP4 interfaces.

Changes: This release has better detection of the iconv library using the
AM_ICONV macro. Autotools files have been upgraded, and there are minor
    documentation upgrades.
