      by Scott Kveton (http://freshmeat.net/users/kveton/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 18:56

About: Amache is yet another Web-based MP3 manager. Using mod_mp3 for
Apache and PHP to render the pages, it allows you to view, edit, and play
your MP3s via HTTP. It has support for playlists, artist and album views,
    random play streams, etc.

Changes: Lots of bugfixes, replacing mp3.php with an id3 class, a new song
editor for updating DB/song file which is integrated with orphan files,
genre support, track support (should order in album order automatically if
ID3v1.1 tags are used), ID3v1.1 support for writing/reading files, tweaking
filefind to make filename the name of orphaned songs, and moving "Orphaned
    Files" into the admin section.

    [006] - Berkeley DB 3.3.11
      by Mike Olson (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikeolson/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 15:12

About: The Berkeley Database (Berkeley DB) is a programmatic toolkit that
provides embedded database support for both traditional and client/server
applications. Berkeley DB includes b+tree, queue, extended linear hashing,
fixed, and variable-length record access methods, transactions, locking,
logging, shared memory caching and database recovery. DB supports C, C++,
Java, and Perl APIs. DB is available for a wide variety of UNIX platforms
as well as Windows NT and Windows '95 (MSVC 4, 5 and 6).

Changes: This version adds support for degree 1 isolation (dirty reads),
automated maintenance of secondary indices on tables, native two-phase
commit for applications that don't want to use a transaction monitor for
distributed transaction processing, and the ability to fetch multiple rows
in a single call to the Berkeley DB API (bulk return). This version can
survive transient disk space exhaustion without a restart. It adds support
    for Lineo's Embedix platform.

      by Jean Delvare (http://freshmeat.net/users/khali/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 18:51

About: Bpatch is a really simple and limited binary patching engine. It
reads the output of 'cmp -l' and applies the modifications to a target
file. Due to 'cmp -l' limitations, Bpatch doesn't handle file size
differences, which makes it useless in most situations.

    [010] - Chordpack 0.8.1 (Beta)
      by Halef (http://freshmeat.net/users/halef/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 15:01

    Category: Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: Chordpack is a tool written in Perl, whose purpose is to typeset
song-books/songs written in chordpro format. The typesetting is done using
typepesetting system TeX using macro package LaTeX. Chordpack has ambition
to do whatever you might want to do with songs in chordpro format.
Chordpack currently can generate LaTeX source of songs/songbook,
generate HTML version of songs/songbook, generate ASCII version of
songs/songbook, generate ASCII version of songs/songbook omitting chords,
transpose chordpro song to desired key, take ordinary ASCII notation of
song with chords, and output almost chordpro version. Chordpack features
four styles of chord setting, three styles of song titles setting, an
option to chose one or two columns, an option to chose fonts sizes,
on-the-fly transposition to a key with minimum difficult chords (as an
option), and other features. Chordpack does not currently set chord
    diagrams.

Changes: This release has less "underfull box" and "overfull box" LaTeX
warning messages (they were quite harmless anyway). The width of songtitle
rules and tabulatures has been slightly improved.

      by Sam Varshavchik (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrsam/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 02:54

Categories: Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents,
    Communications :: Email :: Post-Office

About: Courier is an integrated ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, and webmail server,
designed to provide mail services with aggressive spam filtering. A mail
filtering API defines site-wide and recipient-specific mail filters that
are applied during mail transport, instead of only after the unwanted mail
has already been received. Courier also includes a UUCP gateway, and a
    mailing list manager.

Changes: The "webadmin" module now allows Courier
configuration/administration to be done from a Web browser, and a separate
webmail password file is no longer needed - changing the webmail password
updates the "real" account password (in the LDAP directory, a MySQL table,

    [013] - CueCat Driver 0.4.0
      by Pierre-Philippe Coupard
    (http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrephilippecoupar/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 03:01

About: The :Cue:Cat is a little barcode reader that RadioShack distributes
for free with their new barcoded product catalog. It connects on a PS/2
keyboard, mouse, or USB port and sends codes when it scans a barcode
successfully. This driver watches scancodes on any of those ports and
decodes the ones coming from the :Cue:Cat. When it decodes a barcode
successfully, it sends it in human-readable form on /dev/scanners/cuecat.
As well as a kernel driver patch against Linux 2.4.0, a utility called
CueAct is included which can read barcodes from the CueCat driver and look
up relevant information from the Internet.

Changes: This release has been ported to Linux-2.4.7.

About: dailystrips is a utility to download your favorite online comic
strips each day. What sets it apart from the rest is its "local" mode of
operation, which automatically downloads strips for you.

Changes: This release includes several minor fixes (proxy server syntax,
proxy authentication, loading of Date::Parse), a few new features (1 new
strip, --useragent option, prefetch function), and a new installer script.

      Monday, July 23rd 2001 14:53

About: The purpose of mifluz is to provide a C++ library to build and query
a full text inverted index. It is dynamically updatable, scalable (up to

common used mosctl commands. The Load-Balancing can be influenced by
"speed-sliders" and even remote processes are manageable. A
mosixview-client installed on every cluster-node gives additional options.

Changes: Processes which cannot be moved are displayed as a "lock". A
status-view for local/remote processes has been added. Problems with the
fonts used in Mosixview have been fixed. Versions = 0.6 will contain no
    more precompiled binaries.

      Monday, July 23rd 2001 09:35

    Category: Multimedia :: Video

About: mpgtx (an MPEG ToolboX) allows you to manipulate ID3 tags, split,
join, demultiplex, and fetch detailed information about a variety of MPEG
files. It was designed to do little, but do it well, and to provide the end
user with an austere yet powerful commandline interface. It replaces
    "mpgcut".

Changes: This release fixes a minor bug in demultiplexer, and should now
    compile nicely on gcc-3.0.

    [060] - PHPLIB phplib-7.2d
      by Nathan Hruby (http://freshmeat.net/users/nated/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 14:58

About: PHPLIB is a base library for the PHP language. It contains class
definitions that help in session tracking, manage persistent variables
(just like ASP session-variables, only more flexible), can do
authentication and permission checking and support shopping cart
applications. Additional classes generate HTML code from database queries
    and similar features.

Changes: All users of all versions of phplib should update to this version
as soon as possible. Of major note is that in prepend.php3, the if()
clause around $_PHPLIB['libdir'] assignment will allow a remote attacker to
provide their own libdir (which can be remote), essentially allowing any

    [065] - Port Scan Attack Detector 0.8.9
      by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 14:55

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a program written in Perl that
is designed to work with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x
kernels, and ipchains in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the source,
destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags and
corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x kernels only), email alerting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic configuration of
ipchains/iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels
psad incorporates many of the TCP signatures included in Snort to detect
highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP,
GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans
(syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap.

Changes: A separate monitoiring daemon "psadwatchd" to monitor both psad
and kmsgsd, support for multiple email address reporting, and a debugging
mode for psad have all been added. A bug where multiple scanned hosts were

About: rpm-get is a simple clone of apt-get for RPM. This little
application will let you download, install, upgrade, or remove RPM
packages/sources as well as upgrade the entire distribution with ease.

Changes: S.u.S.E. support was removed. Mandrake/RedHat compatibility was
improved. All instances of 'if [ "foo" = "bar" ]' were changed to 'if [

      by Jeff Dike (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdike/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 08:07

Category: System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: User-Mode Linux lets you run Linux inside Linux. It is a safe,
secure way of running Linux versions and Linux processes. Run buggy
software, experiment with new Linux kernels or distributions, and poke
around in the internals of Linux, all without risking your main Linux
setup. User-Mode Linux gives you a virtual machine that may have more
hardware and software virtual resources than your actual, physical
computer. You can assign your virtual machine only the hardware access you
want it to have. With properly limited access, nothing you do on the
virtual machine can change or damage your real computer or its software.

Changes: This release updates to 2.4.7, a UML .deb is now availbale, the
block driver now supports a read/write COW layer above a shared read-only
filesystem, I/O memory emulation was added, block devices and network
interfaces are now pluggable, and various bugs have been fixed.

    Category: Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis

About: Waveform Editor is a program that lets you create sets of
frequency-amplitude envelopes using a GTK GUI, and play them with your
soundcard. In layman's terms, this program lets you make cool sounds by
simply pointing and clicking. This is somewhat similar to what some
    digital sythesizers are able do.

Changes: The problem with the default length staying at 44100 has been
fixed. A feature to make a copy of an envelope has been added. The option
of using Half-cosine interpolation rather than linear interpolation has
been added. Wavetable is now used instead of using sin() directly.

    [081] - wchat 1.2.5
      by Stephen Rust (http://freshmeat.net/users/srust/)
      Monday, July 23rd 2001 15:04

About: wchat is a Chat Server written in C. It is designed to use minimal
CPU and memory resources, and to be a modular high-level code base. What
this means is that all low-level functions are written in separate
libraries which wchat uses, allowing any additions or changes to the
functionality of the chat to be very simple and straightforward. wchat is
an extremely stable and solid base from which to build a chat environment.

Changes: libadns has been removed in favor of multithreaded DNS resolving.
User accounts have been added to save and identify users. There is a
distinction between user classes (guest, normal, admin), timestamps, more
informative system messages, many bugfixes, and more. See the cvsweb file
    changes for a complete description.
