[001] - AikSaurus 0.09
by Aiken (http://freshmeat.net/users/aiken11/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 04:07
Category: Text Editors :: Word Processors
About: AikSaurus is a thesaurus library intended for word processors, email
composers, and so forth. It is based on Project Guttenberg's Moby
thesaurus, but is highly compressed and pruned to bring datafile disk space
requirements down to 2.4 megs. Features include part-of-speech information
and alphabetically-similar known words lists.
Changes: Automake replaces makefiles. The thesaurus now builds as a true
shared library. Namespace issues that were causing compilation errors in
g++ 3 fixed. Other internal changes and improvements, minor bug fixes.

[002] - Alternate Password Library 1.0.2
by Steve Slaven (http://freshmeat.net/users/bpk/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 14:19
About: The library can be used by developers to quickly add alternate
passwd file support for virtual authentication, or by system administrators
to trick programs into seeing a different password file, either at run time
through the LD_PRELOAD variable, or at compile time with -laltpw during the
linking process.
Changes: The automake file was not distributing the man pages, causing the
package not to build; this has been fixed. The man pages and
sendmail/procmail documentation have been updated.

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Software Development :: Build Tools,
System :: Installation/Setup, System :: Systems Administration
About: Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache (IPv4/6)
SSL, PHP(v3/v4), MySQL, Jakarta, a large number of modules (61 3rd party
modules and 36 default Apache modules, static or as DSOs), and GD libraries
with PNG+JPEG+Freetype2+zlib support. It is fully customizable and
menu-driven. Everything is compiled from source, and wget is used to
download any missing modules. It can also check for RPMs that might cause
problems and create an RPM with your selections.
Changes: This release contains updates to mod_mp3, mod_layout, and libcurl
for PHP.

[006] - Barracuda Presentation Framework Beta 2
by ccryder (http://freshmeat.net/users/ccryder/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 18:39
Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content, Internet :: WWW/HTTP
:: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries, Software Development ::
Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Barracuda is an open-source Presentation Framework designed to make
it easier to build servlet-based Web apps by applying proven client-server
patterns to the Web development paradigm. It features a DOM-based
templating mechanism for better separation of code from content, a UI
component model that provides a series of server-side widgets (table,
list, template, etc.) that make it easy to manipulate DOM structures,
strongly typed MVC interfaces just like in Swing, support for multiple
markup languages, an event model that provides Model 2 style flow control
and allows for true event-driven programming on the server, and much more.
Changes: A lot of accumulated fixes/improvements.

[007] - beowulf 27BZ-7
by Xose (http://freshmeat.net/users/xose/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 10:29
About: Beowulf includes an enhanced Linux kernel, libraries, and utilities
specifically designed for clustering. Beowulf provides a single system
image through BProc, the Beowulf cluster process management kernel
enhancement. BProc makes the processes running on cluster "Computation
Node" computers visible and manageable on a front-end "Master Node".
Processes start on the front-end node and migrate to a cluster node.
Process parent-child relationships and UNIX job control are maintained with
migrated tasks. Cluster slave nodes are not required to contain resident
applications. Their hard disks are used for application data and cache.
This approach eliminates version skew common with previous generation
clusters.

[008] - BitTorrent 1.0.6 (Stable)
by Bram Cohen (http://freshmeat.net/users/bramcohen/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 14:19
About: BitTorrent enables all of its users to utilize their entire Internet
connection in both directions at all times. Peers trade content with others
to get them to upload, thus solving the problem of not enough uploads being
offered which plagues other P2P applications.
Changes: The C code has been modified to use an altogether more reasonable
library which doesn't abuse the C preprocessor. It should now work under
Windows and MacOS X.

[009] - BreakDown 1.1 (Development)
by Brett Kuskie (http://freshmeat.net/users/Fullaxx/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 12:40
Category: Security :: Cryptography
About: BreakDown is a Linux password cracker that uses dictionary attacks
and customizable brute force attacks. It can also be used as a sequential
character generator.
Changes: Progress files are now opened and closed every time the program
writes, keeping the files to one line. When loading dictionary files or
password lists into memory, if the program finds a '#' it will ignore
everything after it until it finds a new line.

[010] - Ccontrol Linux 0.1 (Development)
by Diman Todorov (http://freshmeat.net/users/HET2/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 11:27
About: Ccontrol Linux is a development toolkit for a Motorola 68hc705 demo
board. The toolkit is based on ports of the Windows and DOS IDEs. The
project consists of a number of console tools needed to develop software
for the ccontrol unit.
Changes: This is the first official release. The assembler is now working,
although it is still far from perfect. Some minor changes were made in the
upload/download tools. The dos2unix program, which converts DOS-style
end-of-line delimiters to Unix-styl end-of-line delimiters, was added. The
tests directory was added.

[014] - Database Template Library 3.0
by corwinjoy (http://freshmeat.net/users/corwinjoy/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 03:50
About: The goal of the Database Template Library is to make ODBC recordsets
look just like an STL container. As a user, you can move through containers
using standard STL iterators, and if you insert(), erase(), or replace()
records in the containers, changes can be automatically committed to the
database for you. The library's compliance with the STL iterator and
container standards means you can plug the abstractions into a wide variety
of STL algorithms for data storage, searching, and manipulation. In
addition, the C++ reflection mechanism used by the library to bind to
database tables allows generic indexing and lookup properties to be added
to the containers with no special code required from the enduser. Because
the code takes full advantage of the template mechanism, the library adds
minimal overhead compared with using raw ODBC calls to access a database.
Changes: Full unicode support. Significant restructuring to cut compile
times. Significant new features to enhance query generation control and
binding of stored proceedures to STL iterators. See the download page for
details and a full list of enhancements.

[017] - DoctorJava .03
by Eric B. (http://freshmeat.net/users/lameduckie/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 21:39
Categories: Games/Entertainment, Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games
About: DoctorJava is a Java Swing-based Dr. Mario clone. Much like Tetris,
the object of the game is to remove rows of similarly-colored pills or
viruses and clear off the playing board. Adding to the compexity is the
collapse of unsupported pills, so you can create cascades that remove many
rows at a time. DoctorJava supports custom speeds, virus-levels, two-player
mode, and more.
Changes: A new Two-Player mode, an options dialog to chose virus height,
density, and pill drop speed, and display of in-game statistics.

by AB (http://freshmeat.net/users/amnon/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 05:52
Category: System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: MOSIX is a software package to enhance the Linux kernel with cluster
computing capabilities. It allows an arbitrarily-sized cluster of PCs to
work cooperatively as if part of a single system. To run in a MOSIX cluster
there is no need to modify applications, to link applications with any
library, or even to assign processes to different nodes. MOSIX does its job
automatically and transparently. The core of MOSIX are adaptive resource
management algorithms that monitor and respond to uneven work distribution
among the nodes. These algorithms use preemptive process migration to
assign and reassign processes among the nodes, to continuously take
advantage of the best available cluster resources. The MOSIX algorithms are
geared for maximal performance, overhead-free scalability, and ease of use.

[062] - MPI Ruby 0.1
by Emil Ong (http://freshmeat.net/users/eboatanl/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 00:32
Categories: Scientific/Engineering, Software Development :: Libraries
About: MPI Ruby is a Ruby binding of MPI. The primary goal in making this
binding was to make the power of MPI available to Ruby users in a way that
fits into the language's object oriented model. In order to do this, the
buffer and datatype management necessary in the C, C++, and Fortran
bindings have been removed. What this means is that MPI Ruby allows you
to treat objects as messages. MPI Ruby also aims to be a complete binding
to MPI, in that it offers access to nearly all functionality of MPI.

testing, but should mostly be complete.

"Forms library" and imported into an OIO server, the necessary database
tables are automatically recreated and the imported forms become
immediately available to the users of that OIO server.
Changes: This is a major upgrade release with significantly expanded online
data analysis capabilities (multi-level drill-down, N x N contingency
table, Chi-square test) and integrated localization/in-context
multi-lingual support. Works with Zope 2.3.3 and PostgreSQL 7.1.

[072] - pulse 1.0
by Shahbaz Javeed (http://freshmeat.net/users/javeed/)

Categories: System :: Logging, System :: Systems Administration
About: Pulse is a small program that can output an optionally user-defined
number of ticks at user- defined time intervals to easily measure elapsed
time. It was deliberately made very simple and at the same time
(hopefully) useful. Pulse basically outputs a dot `.' to the screen after
a user-defined interval. The functionality of this is that if this stream
of dots is redirected to a file, the size of the file determines the
length of time that Pulse has been running.

[087] - Timo's Rescue CD Set 0.7
by Timo Benk (http://freshmeat.net/users/tbenk/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 17:07
About: Timo's Rescue CD Set provides an easy way to generate bootable CDs
with a ready-to-use rescue system on it. The system is designed to be fully
customizable in addition to being easy to build. The rescue system includes
reiserfs, parted, partimage, nmap, w3m, and bash, as well as sshd, telnetd,

[088] - tpop3d 1.3.4
by Chris Lightfoot (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrisexparrotcom/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 18:16
Category: Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
About: tpop3d is yet another POP3 server. It is intended to be fast,
extensible, and secure. It is especially extensible in regard to its
authentication subsystem. Supported authentication mechanisms include
auth_pam (Pluggable Authentication Modules) and auth_passwd to mediate
access between users and their Unix-style mailboxes, auth_mysql which uses
vmail-sql to mediate access to virtual-domain email, auth_other which
allows you to authenticate with an external program communicating via
pipes, and auth_perl which allows you to authenticate users with custom
Perl code. tpop3d supports traditional (BSD-format) mailspools and the
maildir format of qmail. tpop3d is reasonably portable to modern systems.
It should build successfully `out of the box' on Linux, modern BSD systems,
Solaris, and Mac OS X. The GNU autoconf mechanism is used to configure and
build tpop3d, so with any luck it should also build on other reasonable
Unix systems.
Changes: This release contains minor changes and the addition of metadata
caching for BSD mailspools. In addition, the mailbox object was modified
for efficiency reasons. A bug which could cause child processes to fail
with SIGSEGV under heavy load has been fixed. In view of this, it is
recommended that existing installations be upgraded.

[093] - Web Application Load Simulator 0.9.5 (Stable)
by Vincent Sheffer (http://freshmeat.net/users/vsheffer/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 01:48
About: LoadSim allows you to record a Web browser session and play it back
with as many virtual users as your network and computing resources allow. A
single simulation can be run on different machines (to simulate large
numbers of virtual users) and managed from a single console. Raw results
consist of time-to-first-byte (TTFB), time-to-last-byte (TTLB), size of
file downloaded, a label for the link, and the content type. It also comes
with basic statistical analysis support for calculating means, standard
deviation, and histograms for the raw results. It supports datasets so you
can realistically simulate users (or use LoadSim as a way to initialize a
database) with different form data.

[097] - X on DirectFB 1.6.4
by Denis Oliver Kropp (http://freshmeat.net/users/dok666/)
Tuesday, July 24th 2001 14:22
About: XDirectFB (ported from XGGI) is a hardware accelerated X server
which uses DirectFB in fullscreen mode to do hardware-independent graphics
and input. Window movements, solid rectangle fills, pixmap blits, and tiles
are accelerated. The development goal is to create a DirectFB Window
(using DirectFB's window stack instead of running in fullscreen mode) for
each X top level window and use DirectFB Surfaces for Pixmaps and Images
(like the GDK backend does). This way you get a fully-accelerated X server
with seamless integration into the DirectFB desktop.
Changes: This release adds hardware support for pixmap blitting and
(background) tiling (pixmap to window, window to pixmap, pixmap to pixmap)
by creating a DirectFB Surface for a Pixmap. It has better timing for input
event polling, much smoother mouse movements, and accelerated rectangle
filling to pixmaps.
