      by Frank Hale (http://freshmeat.net/users/frankhale75/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 03:09

About: aewm++ is the C++ version of aewm. Its sole purpose is to provide a
C++ codebase for coders to hack on. The C version of aewm has spawned many
window managers. The C++ version will possibly do the same.

Changes: This release includes partial GNOME support so that it works
properly with fspanel, and a few other minor enhancements and bugfixes.

      Sunday, July 29th 2001 20:18

About: Ampache is yet another Web-based MP3 manager. Using mod_mp3 for
Apache and PHP to render the pages, it allows you to view, edit, and play
your MP3s via HTTP. It has support for playlists, artist and album views,
    random play streams, etc.

Changes: Minor bugfixes from various users, updated Album and Artist views,
new "play all songs from artist" and "randomize songs from artist", and
moving admin tools into /admin so users can lock down via htaccess if they
    wish.

      Sunday, July 29th 2001 03:10

About: Audacity is a cross-platform multitrack audio editor. It allows you
to record sounds directly or to import WAV, AIFF, AU, IRCAM, or MP3 files.
It features a few simple effects, all of the editing features you should
need, and unlimited undo. The GUI was built with wxWindows and the audio
I/O currently uses OSS under Linux. Audacity runs on Linux/*BSD, MacOS, and
    Windows.

Changes: This release includes MP3 exporting support (by linking to LAME),
new effects, mute/solo buttons, bugfixes, and more.

    [004] - Brahms 1.0
      by Stefan Westerfeld (http://freshmeat.net/users/stw/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 18:24

About: Brahms is a sequencer and professional music notation program with
several editing methods, including Score-, Pianoroll-, Drum-, and
Mastertrack Editors. For C++ programmers, it is easy to write new plugins
(without recompiling Brahms). MIDI Import and Export is also implemented.
It is compatible with KDE2.x and the aRts software synthesizer.

Changes: A port to KDE 2.2, providing compatibility to the KDE soundsystem
aRts and the abilty to take advantage of synthesis and external MIDI
input/output. It provides a sophisticated and easy-to-use plugin
architecture, enabling professional musicians to write plugins without
    recompilation.

    [005] - bras 1.1.0
      by Harald Kirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/pifpafpuf/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 18:47

About: Bras is a rules-based command execution system, ala 'make'. It
includes a powerful rules system supporting foreign directory triggers,
multiple rule types, and on-the-fly dependency generation. It is written in
Tcl and uses Tcl as its script language.

Changes: The new predicate [updated {a b c ...}] can be used instead of
[older] if the target is not a file name, a fix for a bug regarding
-dependencies where the was still prefixed to the dependency when it was
passed to the command of a rule, and an example to demonstrate a setup for
    multi-platform builds.

    [007] - Contour 0.9.1
      by Dominic Tracey (http://freshmeat.net/users/aquilon/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 18:56

About: Contour consists of a viewer for bathymetric data. It displays a
smattering of sample points (consisting of a latitude, longitude, and
depth) which are transformed into a beautifully rendered 24-bit color
surface representation. GPS support has been added using the gpsd library.
It also has client installations on fishing and research vessels which
will collect positional, bathymetric, and fish stock data and server nodes
that will aggregate and provide analysis tools for the data collected by
the clients. The client software will act as a wheelhouse position plotter
and be integrated with various GPS and sounding machines. After each tow
or set, data about the catch is collected by the system. At the end of
each trip, the data is collected and merged into the central archive for
analysis with a GIS system such as GRASS or ARC/INFO.

Changes: GPS support, a current position indicator, lots of bugfixes and
memory leak plugs, and some code cleanup and restructuring.

About: DOMC is a lightweight implementation of the Document Object Model
(DOM) in ANSI C as specified in the W3C DOM Core Level 1 recommendation.
When coupled with the Expat XML Parser Toolkit, DOMC can load, store,
build, and directly manipulate XML documents represented as a tree in
    memory.

Changes: A completely revisited build process, and inclusion of Expat with
a modified Makefile to build it and DOMC as separate shared libraries.

      by Benjamin Kuz (http://freshmeat.net/users/kuzb/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 03:34

About: Dynamic MP3 Lister is an easy way to share MP3s on the Web. It can
recurse through directories to compute the sum of the filesizes of their
contained files, and it can extract MP3 information, such as time,
frequency, bitrate, channels, and more. It can also build and send you a
playlist, in .pls format, for streaming MP3s. It currently only works on
    Unix systems.

Changes: This release fixes a small problem where the script would output
errors if a user tried to sort an empty list.

    [015] - FreeCNC 0.1.0
      by kareemy (http://freshmeat.net/users/kareemy/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 20:44

Category: Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy

About: FreeCNC is a clone of the real time strategy engine from Command &
Conquer. It utilizes the portable SDL library and runs under X or
framebuffer console in Linux, Win32, and BeOS. FreeCNC depends on graphics
files from the original C&C CD, so you will need to have C&C in order to
    play FreeCNC.

Changes: Proper unit movement (including turning and animations), working
sidebar code, structure placement (including building animations), "out of
the box" compilation for Linux, BeOS, and Win32, and better syncing of VQAs
(the videos are in synch with the sound, and the sound doesn't skip).

    [016] - gladepyc 1.3
      by Fabien COUTANT (http://freshmeat.net/users/fabiencoutant/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 18:49

About: gladepyc generates a Python module from a Glade XML GUI description
which builds the corresponding GTK+ interface by using the _gtk module of
the PyGTK binding. The building module which is output can be used to build
as many separate window/widget instances of the same class as you want at
run-time, because each window is translated into a UI building class. It
can also, on request, generate UI building code for just a subtree of the
    UI description.

Changes: Internationalization of labels has been implemented; labels' text
can be changed at run-time through message catalogs. The tutorial has been
completed, and a fix for a bug that made RO/RW attribute of text widgets
    not always honored.

    Category: Text Editors

About: GNU nano (Nano's ANOther editor, or Not ANOther editor) is an
enhanced clone of the Pico text editor.

Changes: This release features fixes for the multibuffer code, many
compiler macro tweaks, and a more logical search/replace shortcut list.
There are also now internal aclocal macros for gettext, etc, and the
included gettext was downgraded to 0.10.35 due to some portability

      by Joachim Miltz (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmiltz/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 19:59

About: GuitarTeX is based on the idea of Chord. It takes a Chord file
containing Chordpro directives to produce good-looking and easy-to-play
song sheets for guitarists in PostScript or PDF format. You can use all
available LaTeX features and packages to create a songbook or a single song
sheet as you like it. If you don't know very much about LaTeX you can
create pstscript or PDF output automatically.

Changes: The page layout can be configured individually with the new
geometry directive (see example file), support for multiple languages
(English and German), and GuitarTeX may be used as a command line text

      Sunday, July 29th 2001 19:55

    Category: Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: IceBreaker is an action-puzzle game in which you must capture
penguins from an Antarctic iceberg so they can be shipped to Finland, where
they are essential to a secret plot for world domination. To earn the
highest Geek Cred, trap them in the smallest space in the shortest time
while losing the fewest lives. IceBreaker was inspired by (but isn't an
exact clone of) Jezzball by Dima Pavlovsky.

Changes: A new score decay timer to discourage obsessive-compulsive types
from taking hours on one level, new Easy and Hard modes, options for sound,
fullscreen mode, an official Win32 version, slight gameplay improvements, a
few bugfixes, and general code cleanup.

      by Charles Samuels (http://freshmeat.net/users/njordfet/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 20:13

About: Intra-Thread Communication (ITC) aims to make it exceedingly easy to
call functions in other threads. The lexer does all the work, so just run
the lexer on your headers, then call the stub functions. In addition, it
also provides a complete threading API, with the four threading primitives
and a high speed threadsafe FIFO class.

    [038] - Port Scan Attack Detector 0.9.0
      by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 18:55

Categories: System :: Networking :: Firewalls, System :: Networking ::
    Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a program written in Perl that
is designed to work with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x
kernels, and ipchains in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the source,
destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags and
corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x kernels only), email alerting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic configuration of
ipchains/iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels
psad incorporates many of the TCP signatures included in Snort to detect
highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP,
GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port scans
(syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against a machine via nmap.

Changes: Support for UDP scan detection along with a few UDP scan
signatures, install.pl parses the configuration sections of previously
installed versions of psad on a per-variable basis, a new verbose mode to
install.pl, improved check_flags() for better TCP flag recognition (nmap
NULL scans are supported), and a fix for psadwatchd not parsing ps output

      by Vanja Hrustic (http://freshmeat.net/users/vanja/)
      Sunday, July 29th 2001 19:59

    Categories: Security, System

About: Sophie is a daemon which uses 'libsavi' library from Sophos anti
virus vendor ( http://www.sophos.com ). On startup, Sophie initializes SAPI
(Sophos Anti-Virus Interface), loads virus patterns into memory, opens
local UNIX domain socket, and waits for someone to connect and instructs it
which path to scan. Since the database is loaded in RAM, scanning is very
fast. (Note: speed of scanning also depends on SAVI settings and size of
the file.) It has been tested on Linux and Solaris (Sparc), and also
compiles on FreeBSD (not extensively tested). It was made as a part of

    Categories: Database :: Database Engines/Servers, Database :: Front-Ends

About: YMCA's aim is to download movies' informations from a
movies-specialized website, and do searches and listings of a movies
collection. Altough this function is not yet implemented, you can already
use or help developing this piece of software. For the moment, I develop
this program only for french speakers, because I only know a french good
movies site, and the first goal is to fit my wishes.

Changes: Search and delete functions no longer make the program segfault
when there is no movie in the database.
