      by Eric Boyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/EricLBoyd/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 16:33

    Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers, Internet :: WWW/HTTP ::
    Site Management, System :: Networking

About: FEZhead is a global load balancer, working at both the DNS level,
and (optionally) at the HTTP level to select the best content server of a
set of content servers, to answer a particular HTTP request. It can be
used to set up a network of caches, to mirror an origin server, or to
maximize the usage of multiple pipes for a multi-homed Web server. Each
of these solutions makes a Website more reliable, and faster.

Changes: Bandwidth consumption (e.g. price) was incorporated into delay
calculation. A weighting factor was added to balance price against
performance. Problems with multi-homing were fixed. It is now possible to
run two Responders on the same machine. Some lingering embedded paths were
removed. Now everything works relative to a "working directory." (This was
a big problem on Linux.) The default directory was moved to a more
appropriate location. A problem with the version of client and content
server tables was fixed. Most of the files were renamed according to a
    consistent naming scheme.

    [022] - format floppy 0.2.1
      by Roland Riegel (http://freshmeat.net/users/rolandriegel/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 16:53

    Category: System :: Filesystems

About: format floppy formats your floppies with a capacity of 1440 or 1722
kBytes. Even floppies with an original size of only 1440 kBytes can be
reformatted. Now it is possible to save and to transport a file whose size
would normally be too large. Additionally, format floppy creates a file
system of your choice on the floppy. You can choose between FAT-12,
FAT-16, FAT-32, ext2, and minix. If you want to use the disk with DOS or
Windows, FAT-12 is the best option.

Changes: The program was translated into English.

      by Jonathan Abbey (http://freshmeat.net/users/jonabbey/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 05:59

Categories: Database :: Database Engines/Servers, System :: Networking,
    System :: Systems Administration

About: Ganymede is a metadirectory system, primarily intended for UNIX-like
environments, but capable of being run with some effort on any server
supporting Java 1.1.7 or better. Ganymede supports NIS, DNS, and other
network information services, and allows many administrators to work
together simultaneously to administer defined subsets of your network
directory data. Any system capable of running Java applets with Swing can
    run the Ganymede client.

Changes: This release includes a security bugfix for a loophole where
unprivileged users could change their account's expiration and removal
dates, support for running under JDK 1.4 beta, and support for Sun's Java
    Web Start application launcher.

      by Herbert Valerio Riedel (http://freshmeat.net/users/hvr/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 12:26

    Category: Multimedia :: Video

About: GNU VCDImager is a program for making Video CD (and Super Video CD,
a.k.a. SVCD) images out of MPEG movie files. The images it creates are
ready to use with programs which understand BIN/CUE images, such as cdrdao.
GNU VCDRip allows for reversing the process, ripping mpeg tracks from
    (Super) Video CDs.

Changes: This version fixes some minor bugs in the ISO-9660 PVD and in the
non-working "svcd vcd30 entrysvd" option. Support for multi default
selections was added. <play-items> and <select> elements were disabled.
Extended SVCD end list flags were added. The Video CD DTD was finally
updated to reflect some of the improvements.

    [029] - HTTP Fetcher 1.0.1
      by Lyle Hanson (http://freshmeat.net/users/lhanson/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 20:14

    Category: Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: HTTP Fetcher is a small, robust, flexible library for downloading
files via HTTP using the GET method. It's easy to use, but it also allows
you to customize and manipulate your file requests through altering the
User Agent, Referer, timeout, etc. The error reporting functions give you a
simple, clean interface through which to obtain information about a
problem. HTTP Fetcher is designed to let you retrieve files via HTTP
quickly and easily without having to reinvent the wheel. From this base you
can build interactive download tools (like fetch), site mirroring tools,
Web spiders, or anything with a need to do HTTP GETs.

Changes: A new "Host: " field in HTTP requests to accommodate some servers
that require it (even with HTTP 1.0 requests); servers would previously
return a 404 without the Host specified.

    [030] - httplog 1.7
      by Eli Sand (http://freshmeat.net/users/nutbar/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 09:32

    Categories: Internet, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP
Servers, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management, System :: Archiving,
    System :: Logging

About: httplog is a replacement for Apache's 'rotatelogs' and Andrew Ford's
'chronolog'. It allows you to specify a logfile using strftime paramaters
in the filename to act as a template. This means that the logs in your
logfiles will also be sorted according to the filename. For example, if you
specify a logfile of /var/log/http%Y%m%d.log, a new log file would be
generated each day, with content for only that one day. It also supports
compression of logfiles using gzip, and many other useful functions.

Changes: The program's reaction to SIGTERM was changed to flushing and
exiting. The buffer size (-b) option was changed to be an absolute buffer
size value. An errno code was added along with normal errors. The name of
MAX_STDIN was changed to BUFSIZ and MAX_PATH was changed to PATH_MAX.
SIGCHLD is now caught to clean up the zombie processes. An RPM .spec file
    was added.

      by Laurent Constantin (http://freshmeat.net/users/laurentconstantin/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 16:53

    Category: System :: Networking

About: Lcrzo is a network library for network administrators and network
hackers. It is designed to make it easy to create network programs. It
supports spoofing, sniffing, and client/server creation. This library has
been successfully installed under Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris.

    Changes: lcrzo_portlist, lcrzo_iplist, and lcrzo_ethlist were created.
These allow you to use lists of ports, IP addresses, and Ethernet
addresses. The module lcrzo_time was rewritten. lcrzo_device_init_noalias
was created to perform such conversions as from "eth0:2" to "eth0". The
lcrzo_fd_select_readx function was created to wait for data ready to be
read from file descriptors. A newline is no longer printed after the
synthetic display of an ARP packet. Under FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris,
you should use BIOCIMMEDIATE, SBIOCSTIME, and SBIOCSCHUNK on a pcap file
descriptor to have sniffed data immediately.

applications. The distribution includes Lookat, a simple VRML browser based
on the library. This code is currently being developed and is one of the
more complete open source VRML browsers available.

Changes: A new memory manager for nodes was implemented, using a refcounted
smart pointer instead of an intrusive reference count. The JavaScript
binding was significantly reworked. The Mozilla distribution of JavaScript
can now optionally be used instead of compiling our own into the library.
libpng and libjpeg are now optional dependencies. The API for VrmlField
classes was cleaned up. Node implementations were consolidated into fewer
    files.

    [050] - oSIP Stack 0.6.0beta2
      by jacK (http://freshmeat.net/users/amoizard/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 02:47

Categories: Communications :: Conferencing, Software Development ::
    Libraries

About: oSIP implements the Session Initiatiation Protocol (published by
IETF as RFC 2543). oSIP can provide signalling capabilities for IP phones.
The library provides a fully usable but not complete parser for the SIP
syntax (To, Via, From, CSeq, Contact, Call-ID, Content-length,
content-type). It also provides a transactional interface which completely
hides the retransmission mechanism, reordering of request, UDP access, and
    other SIP transactional features.

Changes: This release includes a totally new SIP parser which is almost
fully compliant with the SIP syntax with very few exceptions. The library
also now supports multiple attachments through MIME, and the API has been
    fixed.

      by Ian Jones (http://freshmeat.net/users/rouxdoo/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 01:21

About: pdumpq can be used to take queued packets from netfilter/iptables
and dump them to a file that decoders like tcpdump, ethereal, and snort
can read. You can also just pipe it through to the packet decoder and see
what is in those packets as they come in. This is also an easy way to
populate your snort alert database with iptables data. Its features include
automatic dumpfile rotation, filter on firewall marks and issue per-mark
verdicts, and optional emailing of decoded packet dumps.

Changes: This release includes a fix for incomplete writing of mail, sanity

      Monday, July 30th 2001 02:48

Category: Multimedia :: Video :: Capture

About: VCR enables you to record TV programs using a video4linux-compatible
video grabber card. It doesn't require a graphical environment, and by
using the avifile library, it can use popular Windows codecs (DivX, Indeo
    Video 5) for realtime encoding.

Changes: This release includes code updates to work with the latest avifile
from CVS, a handler that intercepts ctrl-c, more user contributed code, and
    a few minor bugfixes.

    [079] - Virge 2.0
      by Vanja Hrustic (http://freshmeat.net/users/vanja/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 12:21

Category: Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Virge is mail scanner written in C. It requires Sendmail, and
AVPDaemon or Sophie (for virus checking). It can check mail for virii, and
also for attachment names (regular expressions, full names, etc). It scans
mail for virii very quickly, since the virus scanners used are always
    loaded in memory.

Changes: Notification can now be sent out to the sender (in case of virus
infection or forbidden attachments). Virus names are now reported in logs
and mails (notifications). Regular expressions can now be used for filename
matching. Ownership of isolated files can be set in the configuration file.
A built-in regexp validity checker was added (for filenames/extensions).
More documentation was added. A sample 'extensions' file included, which
should filter most of the malicious filetypes. A separate file is now used
for logging viruses (mostly useful for statistics purposes). The MIME
libraries were updated from the maildrop-1.3.4 package. Many cleanups were
    made.

    [080] - Watchdog 0.1
      by Craig (http://freshmeat.net/users/crmay1/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 09:24

About: Watchdog is an application designed to monitor services. Should a
service fail, Watchdog executes a user-defined shell script. This could
range from a simple beep to sending an SMS text message. Watchdog also
introduces a new technology called an Avatar, a sprite that performs
animations, plays sounds, and integrates with speech recognition and text
to speech engines. A watchdog avatar is used for this application, and
should a service fail, the watchdog sits up and growls.

      Monday, July 30th 2001 03:09

About: WebGlimpse adds a search engine to your WWW site automatically and
easily. You can index just your own site, or any collection of remote sites
you choose. PDF, Word, and Excel files can be indexed by adding
publicly-available filters. It has a Web administration interface for
managing multiple archives. WebGlimpse is written in Perl, but uses Glimpse
    to perform the heavy lifting.

Changes: This release includes Portuguese support, and a few minor bugfixes
to the install. It is also now easier to download demo versions of
    Webglimpse.

    [082] - WebMagick 2.0
      by Chris Lindell (http://freshmeat.net/users/clindell/)
      Monday, July 30th 2001 12:23

    Category: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: WebMagick makes image collections available on the Web. It recurses
through directory trees, building HTML pages, imagemap files, and
client-side/server-side maps or HTML tables to allow the user to navigate
through collections of thumbnail galleries. Using JavaScript, HTML tables,
and cookies, WebMagick can also allow the viewer to configure how they view
the gallery. The primary focus of WebMagick is performance. Image
thumbnails are reduced and composed into a single image to reduce client
accesses, reducing server load and improving client performance. Everything
is pre-computed. During operation WebMagick employs innovative caching and
work-avoidance techniques to make successive executions much faster.

Changes: New features include an option to use HTML tables instead of image
maps for displaying thumbnails, an option for the user to choose and save
their own gallery layout using cookies, and compatibility with Netscape 6.
