    [005] - bind 9.2.0b2 (Bind9-Beta)
      by Gael MARTINEZ (http://freshmeat.net/users/gaelik/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 01:34

About: The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) implements an Internet name
server for Unix operating systems. The BIND consists of a server (or
`daemon') called `named' and a resolver library. A name server is a network
service that enables clients to name resources or objects and share this
information with other objects in the network.

Changes: This is a beta release of BIND 9.2.0, which contains a number of
new features over BIND 9.1. Several bugs have been fixed, and features have
been added since 9.2.0b1. This is the first release of BIND 9 to feature
integrated support for Windows NT/Windows 2000, allowing BIND 9 to be built
    from source on these systems.

    [007] - Check 0.7.1
      by Arien Malec (http://freshmeat.net/users/amalec/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 01:00

About: Check is a unit test framework for C. It features a simple interface
for defining unit tests, putting little in the way of the developer. Tests
are run in a separate address space, so Check can catch both assertion
failures and code errors that cause segmentation faults or other signals.
The output from unit tests can be used within source code editors and IDEs.

Changes: Reorganized printing and logging functions to allow for a less
primitive logging function. Logging is now documented in the tutorial
    documentation.

About: Curator is a powerful script that allows one to generate Web page
image galleries with the intent of displaying photographic images on the
Web, or for a CD-ROM presentation and archiving. It generates static Web
pages only - no special configuration or running scripts are required on
the server. The script supports many file formats, hierarchical
directories, thumbnail generation and update, per-image description file
with many fields, and 'tracks' of images spanning multiple directories.
The templates consist of HTML with embedded Python. Running this script
only requires a recent Python interpreter and the ImageMagick tools.

    [010] - DansGuardian 1.1.5
      by Daniel Barron (http://freshmeat.net/users/dansguardian/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 23:56

Categories: Internet, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Security, System :: Networking
    :: Monitoring

About: DansGuardian is a filtering proxy that uses Squid to do all the
fetching. It filters using four methods: First, it checks the actual
content of the pages against a configurable list of denied phrases. Second,
it implements PICS filtering. Third, it checks the MIME type of the
requested file against a configurable list of denied types. Fourth, it
checks the file extension of the requested file against a configurable list
of denied file extensions. The filtering has a configurable URL exception
list. It provides filtered, configurable logging which logs in a very
human-friendly format. It can be configured to only log text-based pages,
thus significantly reducing redundant information such as every image on a
    page.

Changes: A fix for a minor bug with conf file reading (it used to ignore

    Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers, Internet :: WWW/HTTP ::
    Dynamic Content, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: Deadman's Redirect is designed to replace whatever it is your
browser loads when you click on the Home button in your browser. It is a
web-surfer's power tool that can be completely customized, using HTML, to
fit the needs of the user. It allows for URL redirection as well as an
interface to various search engines through its aliasing system. It also
supports user-set aliases with functional arguments, RSS headlines, and a
history of all the URLs that pass through it.

Changes: The |link| keyword now takes an optional argument for the text of
the link. A security hole in the authentication system was fixed. Users are
advised to upgrade. The RSSLIB code was removed in favor of the rssparse
library. A text equivalent to the "Skip History" button was added. All
buttons in the main DMR form now have their own CSS classes.

Categories: Communications, Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant
Messanger, Communications :: Chat :: ICQ, Communications :: File Sharing,
Communications :: File Sharing :: Napster

About: Echomine Muse API is a Java API with the goal of integrating all
network-collaboration services into one. The API will give an easy-to-use
interface that allows you to log on to multiple services (ie. ICQ, AIM,
MSN, Yahoo Messenger, IRC, Napster, Gnutella, Jabber). There will be a
client GUI Framework API to combine the use of all these service under one
easy-to-access API so that you can write GUI client with much less effort.

Changes: Gnutella Search Service went through major changes. The search
filter has been removed. In its replacement, there are now new methods to
work with listening for query results. Changed some low level message
processing for Gnutella and Napster. This should increase overall system
performance (less CPU usage). Also fixed some problem with using deprecated

Categories: Software Development, System :: Clustering/Distributed
Networks, System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The FOLK project aims to provide a single patch which incorporates
as many Linux kernel projects as can be crammed in. Its goal is to allow
people who are interested in experimenting with the different projects to
get on with the experimenting, rather than spend time fixing clashing
diffs. It also has the goal of giving some of the more obscure projects a
better chance of being seen and used. It is not intended for "general use".
If a given release is stable, that will be by sheer luck. These are
experimental projects, of unknown quality and completeness, being thrown
together in ways that the developers are unlikely to have even remotely
    considered.

Changes: Addition of IBM's MWave driver and Inbound Connection Controls,
updates to ALSA, CI Clustering Software, ext3 driver, IPPersonality,

    [029] - IceBreaker 1.2.1 (Stable)
      by Matthew Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/mattdm/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 01:18

    Category: Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: IceBreaker is an action-puzzle game in which you must capture
penguins from an Antarctic iceberg so they can be shipped to Finland, where
they are essential to a secret plot for world domination. To earn the
highest Geek Cred, trap them in the smallest space in the shortest time
while losing the fewest lives. IceBreaker was inspired by (but isn't an
exact clone of) Jezzball by Dima Pavlovsky.

Changes: Fixed a minor but ugly bug where the highest-score box wasn't big
enough to fit letters g, j, p, q, or y, and made a few other trivial code
changes. Also, switched to a sensible Linux-kernel-style numbering scheme.

    [050] - Saint Jude 0.20
      by Tim Lawless (http://freshmeat.net/users/timlawless/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 01:31

About: Saint Jude LKM is a Linux kernel module that implements the Saint
Jude model for improper privilege transitions. This will permit the
discovery of local and remote root exploits during the exploit itself. Once
discovered, Saint Jude will terminate the execution, preventing the root
exploit from occuring. This is done without checking for attack signatures
of known exploits, and thus should work for both known and unknown
    exploits.

Changes: Rolled back the Kernel Integrity software from Saint Michael. This
introduces kernel integrity checking, and module support on systems that
require module support. Added Read-Only /dev/kmem support. This does not
effect the ability to load or unload modules. Eliminated the double-execve

    [052] - Saxogram Vocabulary List Builder 0.4
      by Matt Dunford (http://freshmeat.net/users/acklen/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 06:54

About: Saxogram is a script which generates vocabulary lists from texts
written in foreign languages. So far it has dictionaries for Latin,
German, and Italian. Saxogram was written with extensibility in mind.
Thus, other languages can be "plugged in" as modules. All that is needed
is a dictionary and a small amount of code. The purpose of the program is
to speed up language learning. Too much time is spent looking up every
third word. This isn't practical when learning a new language. Generating
a vocabulary list that can be used in parallel to ones reading is helpful.

About: Spreadsheet::WriteExcel is a Perl module which can be used to create
native Excel binary files. Formatted text and numbers can be written to
multiple worksheets in a workbook. Formulas and functions are also

and with the Linux/Unix spreadsheet applications OpenOffice and Gnumeric.

About: tNews is a set of PHP3/4 scripts designed to provide easy-to-use
basic news headline support for websites. The system uses HTML-based
templates to specify formatting of news pages, providing complete control
of page appearance to the webmaster. The system's backend is provided by a
MySQL database, and support is included for generation of both news and old
news pages. News HTML pages are only regenerated when changes are made to
news headlines, so end users suffer no delays caused by database access or
parsing of scripting code. All administration and setup is done through a
Web-based interface, so no editing of text files is required.

Changes: A Web-based configuration system, and fixes for all known bugs.

    [057] - var'aq pre-martoq 0.1
      by Brian Connors (http://freshmeat.net/users/connorbd/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 01:12

About: var'aq is a speculative exercise in language creation: what does a
programming language used by Klingons look like? It is a real programming
language (not just a toy) that tries to imagine what it's like to be a
hacker of the best-documented alien race in science fiction.

Changes: This is a prerelease version of the interpreter, to be included in
the upcoming martoq release of the var'aq reference interpreter. It
includes list support, implemented by Jeff Evarts. It does not supersede
    the Azetbur release.

    [059] - xsbrowser 1.5 (stable)
      by rijo (http://freshmeat.net/users/rijo/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 16:31

About: xsbrowser allows you to navigate a DTD or XML schema using a Web
browser. It hides the document model's representation syntax and shows only
the knowledge that is significant for the construction of valid
    documents.

Changes: Improved error management, extensions to internal structures so
that the creation of valid XML documents will be possible in a later
    version, and a few bugfixes.

    [060] - XSpell 0.1 (XSpell Client)
      by Ironstorm (http://freshmeat.net/users/ironstorm/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 10:36

    Category: Text Editors

About: XSpell is a spell checker for Web forms. When a user fills in a form
and hits a spell-check button, the text input is packaged up by the browser
into an XML-RPC message and sent to the spell checker server. The server
generates an XML-RPC response containing spelling mistakes it found (if
any), and word replacement suggestions for those words. The user's browser
parses the response and presents the list of word suggestions to pick from,
along with an input box that can be used to type in words not suggested.

      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 18:07

    [064] - zisofs-tools 1.0.1 (Stable)
      by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
      Tuesday, July 31st 2001 00:30

    Category: System :: Filesystems

About: zisofs-tools, in conjunction with the zisofs patch for the Linux
kernel, allows creation of an iso9660 filesystem which can be decompressed

systems. It contains the tools necessary to create such a filesystem and
read compressed files on an unmodified system.

Changes: This release fixes some mostly cosmetic bugs, and it also improves
the error checking in a few cases.
