    [001] - Astaro Security Linux 3.203 (Stable 3.x)
      by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 09:11

    System :: Networking :: Firewalls

    About: Astaro Security Linux is a firewall solution. It does stateful
    packet inspection filtering, content filtering, user authentication, virus
    scanning, VPN with IPSec (PKI for X.509 certificates) and PPTP, and much
    more. With its Web-based management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability to
    pull updates via the Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based on
    a special hardened Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are running
    in change-roots and are protected by kernel capabilities.

    Changes: This version fixes the exploit in the OpenSLL library
    (CAN-2002-0656 CAN-2002-0657 CAN-2002-0659). It also fixes some bugs from
    the known issue list.

    [002] - autoresponder 1.16.7
      by Rodent of Unusual Size (http://freshmeat.net/users/coar/)
      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 16:56

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters

    About: Designed for insertion into a .forward or .qmail file,
    autoresponder is a simple email receptionist; it replies to any mail
    messages it receives on STDIN with the response you specify in the
    command-line arguments. Configured entirely through the command line on
    each invocation, you can specify the from, cc, bcc, and errors-to
    addresses for the reply, the file containing the response text, and
    whether or not the original message should be attached to the reply.

    Changes: This release adds some signal and abend handling, the --verbose
    and and --version options, and fixes for some minor buglets. In addition,
    quoted options in the rc file are now parsed exactly as they would be if
    they appeared on the command line.

    [003] - AVI Player for XMMS 1.2.3
      by Crocodile (http://freshmeat.net/users/crocodile/)
      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 03:32

    Multimedia :: Video

    About: The AVI player is a plug-in for XMMS, giving it the ability to play
    Windows AVI (including DivX ;-)) and ASF files on your Linux or FreeBSD
    box. You can simply add movies to your playlist and the plug-in will call
    aviplay to play the movie files. Many aviplay options are supported, such
    as fullscreen playback and true hardware acceleration on XFree86 4.x.x.

    Changes: This version includes a stripped version of avifile 0.53.5 that
    compiles statically into the plugin. This will make it work no matter
    which version of avifile you have installed. wma and wmv support were
    added.

    [006] - Code striker 1.5.3
      by David Sitsky (http://freshmeat.net/users/sits/)
      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 19:46

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
    Software Development
    Software Development :: Quality Assurance

    About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
    reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
    unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
    reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
    proposed diff in plain text mode, coloured-diff mode, and can also view
    the original and new files that comprise the review in their entirety when
    Codestriker is linked with CVS. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
    comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
    created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
    created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
    comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
    a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
    search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

    Changes: Further integration with Bugzilla was added. When a topic is
    created, or the state is changed, a suitable comment is added to all bugs
    associated with the topic (this allows important information to be
    available within the context of displaying a bug). Support for other
    bug-tracking systems should be easy to implement. A minor rendering bug in
    the topic list screen was also fixed.

    [012] - ENBD 2.4.29 (Current)
      by Peter T. Breuer (http://freshmeat.net/users/ptb/)
      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 11:28

    System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
    System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

    About: The ENBD (Enhanced Network Block Device) is an industrial-strength
    version of the Linux kernel NBD. It makes a remote disk look like a local
    block device, allowing cheap and safe realtime mirrors to be built over
    the net. It features internal block-journalling and multichannel failover.

    Changes: This release fixes a bug which had been causing the ENBD device
    to disable itself for 5 seconds after a network brownout even when the
    (default) operational mode was to hide networking errors internally and
    block until the network returned. The result had been that an overlying
    RAID device would see the fault if writes were in progress, which could
    fault the ENBD component offline with no convenient way to recover. The
    behavior has been corrected so that recovery is invisible to RAID by
    default.

    [013] - Erik's Partial Archive Collator 0.1

      Tuesday, August 6th 2002 00:25

    System
    System :: Archiving
    Utilities

    About: Erik's Partial Archive Collator takes a directory as an argument,
    then walks through it looking for duplicate and partially duplicate
    files. If it finds exact duplicates, it deletes one and creates a hard
    link to the other, minimizing disk usage. If it finds a pair of files
    where the larger file contains the entire contents of the smaller file,
    it will prompts to combine them and create a hard link.

    Changes: This version seems to work on Linux and FreeBSD. It doesn't work
    recursively or on Solaris, and it is not known if it operates under MacOS
    X, AIX, and HPUX. There are some cosmetic issues, and the command line
    parameters have not been finalized.

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

    About: eXist is an XML database with pluggable storage backends and
    support for fulltext search. XML is stored in the internal, native XML-DB
    or in an external RDBMS. The search engine has been designed to provide
    fast XPath queries, using indexes for all element, text, and attribute
    nodes. eXist is lightweight and well-suited for large document
    collections. The server is accessible through easy-to-use HTTP and XML-RPC
    interfaces and supports the XML:DB API for Java programming.

    Changes: The database engine may now run either as a stand-alone server
    process, embedded into an application, or inside a servlet context.
    Applications built with eXist may be distributed as a single .war file.
    The XML:DB API implementation supports embedded as well as remote access

    drawing tool which can be used to create clear visual representations of
    the information, with ideas as graphical objects and the relationships
    between objects expressed as connectors between the objects. RDF metadata
    is used to unambiguously identify and relate the ideas, which allows the
    information to be stored and manipulated based on its meaning. Ideagraph
    is a knowledge management tool for the Semantic Web. It will feature
    simple tools for associating text documents, images, and Web pages with
    the ideas, together with a simple system for organizing the maps and
    documents.

    Changes: This release has a major bottom-up refactoring of the GUI, with
    the result that there's actually less functionality visible, though what
    there is is more likely to work.

    Software Development

    About: xxdiff is a graphical browser for viewing the differences between
    two or three files, or between two directories, and can be used to produce
    a merged version.

    Changes: This release introduces a very useful feature for merge
    reviewers: diff hunks which contain only whitespace and line break changes
    will be detected and can optionally be flagged with a different color.
    This permits the reviewer to quickly ignore source code reidentation and
    reorganization changes. Also, alignment lines are now be filled with a
    subtle pattern to better identity them (this can be disabled).

    About: ZenWeb is a system for building entire Web sites, not just pages.
    It allows you to focus on the content and the structure of the website,
    while leaving page construction, markup, layout, and navigation as
    secondary concerns. It provides tools for complete Web site design and
    creation, simple paragraph to HTML generation with embellishments, and a
    rich set of tools for page and Web site creation, modification, and
    customization.

    Changes: RelativeRenderer was added to make URLs relative where possible.
    Tests and test content have been improved.
