    Desktop Environment
    Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: 3d Destkop is an OpenGL program for switching virtual desktops in a
seamless 3-dimensional manner. The current desktop is mapped into a 3D
space where you may choose other screens. Several different visualization
    modes are available.

Changes: A bug where textures were not staying around between mode
switches was fixed. Goto functionality was improved. Some visual
enhancements were made, including fading digits and adjustable colors. A
configuration file was added for customizing views. The client (3ddesk)
will now start the server if not already started. Other minor bugfixes
    have been made as well.

    [002] - Active Spam Killer 2.2
      by Marco Paganini (http://freshmeat.net/users/paganini/)
      Thursday, August 8th 2002 13:13

    Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Active Spam Killer (ASK) protects your email account against spam
by confirming the sender's email address before actual delivery takes
place. The confirmation happens by means of a "confirmation message" that
is automatically sent to all "unknown" users. Once the sender replies to
that message (a simple reply will do), future emails from that person will
be delivered immediately. You can also specify (regexp) addresses to be
immediately accepted, rejected (with a nastygram) or ignored. The package
also includes a utility to scan your old mailboxes and generate a list of
    emails to be accepted automatically.

Changes: This is a major upgrade containing a number of new features,
including remote queue and list management, better mail loop prevention,
configurable languages in the confirmation messages, an option to send
only part of the original message back to the sender during confirmation,
Dutch and French translations, better bulk and junk mail handling, and an
option to whitelist senders automatically if their mail contain your mail
key. In addition, tons of bugs were ironed out. Upgrading is recommended.

    System :: Operating System

About: Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is
lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages
are in .tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is
designed to allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined
compared to some other distributions. Things that are relatively unused
are not kept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you
with a solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custom
installation you're looking for. Arch has a package build system that
allows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it very easy to
rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Arch also aims to
use the newer features available to Linux users, such as reiserfs/ext3 and
    devfs.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Echo is a framework for developing object-oriented, event-driven
Web applications in Java. Echo removes the developer from having to think
in terms of "page-based" applications and enables him/her to develop
applications using the conventional object-oriented and event-driven
paradigm for user interface development. Knowledge of HTML, HTTP, and
JavaScript is not required. Tutorials, white papers, and full API
    documentation are available.

Changes: A fix for a bug found in 0.9.7 and previous versions which
interferes with the proper operation of the new "File Transfer Library's"
    download component.

    [022] - EJBCA 2.0 pre2 (Development)
      by Tomas Gustavsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/anatom/)
      Thursday, August 8th 2002 06:21

About: EJBCA is a fully functional Certificate Authority in Java using
J2EE technology. It builds on the J2EE platform to create a robust, high
performance, platform independent, flexible, and component-based CA to be
used standalone or integrated in any J2EE app.

Changes: This version has moved to EJB 2.0, and has therefore changed
Entity beans and the database schema slightly. There is now a Web GUI for
administration through SSL. It uses EJB local interfaces for greatly
improved speed. The type of signing device is completely soft
configurable, there is an option to generate JKS keystores for SSL
servers, there are many small improvements and bugfixes, and DN can now
    contain C=CN or similar.

    Scientific/Engineering

About: GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured
documents via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program
implements high quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also
possible to use TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems.
Finally, TeXmacs supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes
it possible to adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to
    extend the editor.

Changes: The keyboard interface has thoroughly changed, in that the user
may now choose a "look and feel" and the keyboard modifiers may be
configured by the user. The default "emacs look and feel" is closer to
emacs and many other shortcuts have changed. Further new features are the
automatic translation of menus in the documentation and the possibility of

About: LUFS is a hybrid userspace filesystem framework supporting an
indefinite number of filesystems (localfs, sshfs, ftpfs, httpfs, socketfs,
freenetfs, and nutellafs) transparently for any application. It can be
regarded as doing the same job as the VFS (virtual filesystem switch) in
the kernel: it is a switch, distributing the filesystem calls to its
supported filesystems. However, LUFS filesystems are implemented in
userspace. This would be a drawback for local filesystems where the access
speed is important, but proves to be a huge advantage for networked
filesystems where the userland flexibility is most important.

addresses (DNSBL) and domains (RHSBL), DNS-based distributed checksumming
(DNS DCC) similar to Vipul's Razor, and Open AntiVirus pattern scanning.
Unlike many existing ISP-level filtering solutions, it offers
customization of filtering features on a per-address basis. Unlike
SpamAssassin, it communicates via SMTP, so it works with any MTA. It also
supports scoring based on rules with a rejection threshold; this allows

    [047] - MicroBlogger 1.3
      by Bowie J. Poag (http://freshmeat.net/users/Bowie23/)
      Thursday, August 8th 2002 04:47

About: MicroBlogger, as the name implies, is a small, simple, flexible,
secure, and reliable weblog engine written entirely in Bash. It is
designed to be a deploy-in-place weblog solution, with absolutely no
dependencies on any outside programs--no PHP, no SQL, no CGI, no
JavaScript, no Perl, nothing. It is self-regulating, self-maintaining, and
ready to fly straight out of the box.

Changes: This release adds a nice menu system, and consolidates the
backend into a singular script with function calls versus several separate
scripts. Some minor bugfixes were made to improve formatting accuracy on
    the post edit/removal menus.

About: The MPD Tools help create multi-part-dat (".mpd") files from
collections of LDraw (".ldr") files, and for splitting the MPD files into
LDraw files again. An MPD file is a collection of LDraw files in a
practical text format ready to send by email or post to Lugnet. The
package currently consists of two tools. The MPD builder creates a MPD
file from a main model file and all the subfiles the model file refers to
(unless they are in a different catalog from the one the program is
executed in). The MPD splitter takes an existing MPD file and extracts the
    LDraw files it contains.

    [072] - Smarty PHP template engine 2.3.0
      by Monte Ohrt (http://freshmeat.net/users/mohrt/)
      Thursday, August 8th 2002 14:51

    Software Development

About: Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines
for PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block
functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template
engine, adding features such as configuration files, template functions,
and variable modifiers, and making all of this functionality as easy as
possible to use for both programmers and template designers. Smarty also
converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the need to parse the
templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and
    managable for large application needs.

Changes: This release includes bugfixes and a few new functions, most
notably the ability to assign template variables by reference, the ability
to clear cache/compile files by age, and the ability to apply default
modifiers implicitly to your template vars.

    Software Development

About: Tapestry is a rich, component-based object model for developing
dynamic, robust, highly interactive Web applications. Applications are
constructed in terms of Java objects, methods and properties, instead of
URLs and query parameters. It builds and interprets all URLs, dispatching
directly to application-specific "listener" methods. It includes complete
source code, documentation, tutorials and a complete example J2EE
    application.

Changes: This release adds extensions, configurable objects attached to
the library, and application specifications. It now also handles forwards
(to HTML or JSP files) properly.

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Build Tools

About: WinDriver is a professional PCI/ISA/ISAPnP/EISA device driver
development tool for Linux 2.0.31 and above. It lets you use powerful
wizards to access and diagnose your hardware from an intuitive user mode
interface. The wizard will also automatically generate your skeletal
driver. Drivers written using WinDriver will also compile and run in
Solaris 2.6, 2.7 (both x86 and Sparc), Windows NT/2000/XP, Windows
95/98/Me, Windows CE, and VxWorks. It also supports cPCI and USB in
Windows. WinDriver includes Remote WinDriver, which enables developers to
access hardware on any remote target machine, including embedded systems,
from a host machine, via any network connection (LAN, WAN, dialup, etc.).

Changes: 64-bit data transfer on x86 machines was added. This feature
allows new 64-bit buses to be used on existing 32-bit Linux operating
systems for improved performance. Enhanced support for PLX Technology's
new product line, the PCI 9656 I/O Accelerator chip, was added. Code
generation for user drivers now generates documentation for both the
header and body of the functions. Dual processor and SMP support were
added on Linux. Scatter/gather DMA support on Linux 2.4 was added.

About: Xineo XIL (XML Import Language) defines an XML language for
transforming various record-based data sources into XML documents, and
provides a fully functional XIL processing implementation. This
implementation has built-in support for relational sources (via JDBC) and

public API, which permits dynamic integration of new data source
    implementations.

Changes: A new input source type (lineRegex) was adde, along with new
properties for 'regex' input sources (skipFirstLines and matchFullLine).
Local input source properties were also added. A new ability to
dynamically register new data source types in the import sheet was
implemented, as was an ability to output result to an output stream as
well as a DOM (no more limitation on output size). A commandline option
for output encoding was added, the XIL schema was formalized as XSD, and
the tutorial was corrected and updated.
