      by Claus Brunzema (http://freshmeat.net/users/cbrunzema/)
      Sunday, August 11th 2002 16:42

    Text Editors :: Emacs

    About: active-menu is a small XEmacs module that saves a few extra lines
    of screen space in your favorite editor (if XEmacs happens to be your
    favorite editor). When active-menu is enabled, the menubar at the top of
    the frame is visible only when the mouse pointer is within the area of the
    menubar.

    Changes: The menu is now hidden when the frame is deselected.

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

    About: Apache::Gallery is a mod_perl handler that sits on top of your
    DocumentRoot and creates an image gallery of the files and directories
    there. It creates an thumbnail index of each directory and allows viewing
    of pictures in different resolutions. Pictures are resized on the fly and
    cached.

    Changes: This release has been updated for the new version of Image::Info.

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Code Generators
    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: AutoOpts is an integrated part of AutoGen. Based on a very simple
    option description file, it will process configuration files, environment
    variables, command line options, text strings passed by client programs,
    and will make the results easily accessible to the client program. It will
    also produce a man page and the info-doc invoking section automatically.

    Changes: The autoconfiguration integration was improved. The last release
    would also mishandle the --with-regex=whatever config option.

    [007] - BINS photo album 1.1.14
      by Jérôme SAUTRET (http://freshmeat.net/users/zubro/)
      Sunday, August 11th 2002 11:18

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP
    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
    Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

    About: BINS is a valid HTML 4 photo album generator with support for
    internationalization, EXIF, and customizable charset encoding, including
    UTF-8 (Unicode). Albums can contains other sub-albums. The appearance of
    the album can be fully personalized by using template and configuration
    parameters. The number and size of scaled pictures can be chosen in pixels
    or percentage of the original image. Several description fields (date,
    location, etc.) can be associated with the pictures, and you can add
    additional description fields. A command line utility or a GTK+ GUI can be
    used to set or edit description fields. BINS can use the EXIF data
    structure found in some pictures to automatically fill some fields (most
    notably, date and time) and to produce a page providing all information
    available on the picture, as well as the DigiCam settings when the photo
    was taken. All image meta-data are stored in XML files.

    Changes: Some image files and directories can now be excluded. CVS
    subdirectories are no longer processed. HTML generation performance has
    been increased by using the blind_cache parameter of HTML::Template. A bug
    that incorrectly set width and height of thumbnails and prevented Internet
    Explorer (at least version 5) from displaying them has been corrected. The
    image template has been changed so that Internet Explorer can display the
    title tooltip on the prev/next thumbnails. Bins now process .thm files
    created by Canon cameras that do movies.

    [008] - bugcli - bugzilla command line interface 0.4
      by Dennis Cox (http://freshmeat.net/users/durrow/)
      Sunday, August 11th 2002 23:13

    Software Development :: Bug Tracking
    Utilities

    About: bugcli is a group of client and server-side Perl scripts that
    provide a command-line interface to the bug tracking tool, bugzilla. It
    offers the ability to enter a new bug, view a single bug, or view a list
    of bugs based on a number of attributes.

    Changes: A new script, addbug, has been added to the distribution, which
    allows you to enter a bug report from the shell. addbug does not require
    server side CGI support, but relies on already existing bugzilla CGI
    scripts. bugcli has been updated with a new option that displays a wider

    System :: Archiving :: Compression

    About: cabextract will extract the contents of cabinet archives. It also
    supports cabinets embedded in executables and multi-part cabinets. It
    fully supports MSZIP and LZX decompression.

    Changes: This release supports extracting cabinets using the Quantum
    compression method. The search algorithm for finding embedded cabinets has
    been greatly improved. The search for spanning cabinets is now
    bidirectional and correctly case-insensitive. Extracted files now have the
    correct date stamp, and honour your umask settings. Files beginning with
    "\" will no longer be extracted to the root directory. Compilation
    problems with getopt_long() have been resolved. A Japanese manual page is

    pruning and minimax searching to find the number of tricks a given side
    can take under the assumption of optimal play. While the complexity of the
    problem may be enormous depending on the given deal and contract, cddsolve

    [011] - Cheap Threads 2.0
      by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
      Sunday, August 11th 2002 16:44

    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: Cheap Threads is a collection of portable C routines for
    implementing sychronous threads. It includes a scheduler and a facility
    for passing messages among threads. Threads may run in a round robin or
    according to a priority scheme. Each thread must voluntarily relinquish
    control from time, via an ordinary function return, so that other threads
    can run. Since the threads are synchronous, i.e. they don't interrupt each
    other, they don't need to use semaphores, mutexes, critical sections, or
    other facilities to keep from interfering with each other. One version of
    Cheap Threads is designed for embedded systems.

    Changes: This release provides optional support for embedded systems,
    avoiding the need for file I/O, dynamic memory allocation, or both.

    traffic and serves up Web page reports of statistics such as data
    transferred by host, port, and protocol. It also has a neat bandwidth
    usage graph.

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 19:56

    Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

    About: DiaSCE is a C/C++ code editor for GNOME. It pretends to be a
    complement to Glade, so it doesn't include an environment for GUI's
    development. It has neither a debugger or other kind of tool to help
    debugging. The idea is for it to be a light code editor that doesn't need
    too many resources, and makes use of external tools (gcc, glade, ddd,
    etc.) for some tasks.

    Changes: The name has changed from David to DiaSCE. A bug which occurred
    when going to the Preferences menu has been fixed. A bug which occurred

    running exim and the server runs on the monitoring server. Each client
    reads the queue on the mail server and sends the total number of messages,
    the number of frozen message, and the number of bounce messages to the
    server. The server stores this data and uses RRDtool to make a graphical
    representations of the data.

    Changes: A crash due to an off-by-one memory allocation error in exitop

    [020] - GRAB 1.0.4
      by Greg Kurtzer (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregk433/)

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
    Security
    System :: Software Distribution Tools

    About: GRAB (Greg's RPM Application Builder) adds functionality and
    ease-of-use to RPM, by allowing a user to search through a collection of
    RPMs on various FTP servers (given in a configuration file), and download
    and install all in one action. It can perform system upgrades, and display
    all packages that are "outdated". It also has the ability to be run
    through cron, to automatically upgrade all packages (except ones defined
    in a skip list) that are available. This project began to provide similiar
    functionality to RPM based distros as apt-get (Debian package tool). Apt
    has since been ported to RPM. GRAB's functionality now is still fairly
    similar, but also provides additional features that makes it easier to use
    and more intuitive. It can also work with any FTP server, as opposed to a
    specifically configured RPM repository server.

    Changes: This release adds proxy support. If an RPM install fails, GRAB no
    longer removes downloaded packages. The UI was changed for dependencies,
    and download confirmation was added.

    About: Hibernate is a powerful, high performance object/relational
    persistence and query service for Java. It lets you develop persistent
    objects following common Java idiom, including composition, association,
    inheritance, polymorphism, and the Java collections framework. To allow a
    rapid build procedure, Hibernate rejects the use of code generation or
    bytecode processing. Instead, runtime reflection is used and SQL
    generation occurs at system startup time. It supports Oracle, DB2, MySQL,
    PostgreSQL, Sybase, Interbase, Microsoft SQL Server, Mckoi SQL, Progress,

    [034] - LUFS Userland Filesystem 0.4.1

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 08:49

    Communications
    Communications :: File Sharing
    Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

    About: LUFS is a hybrid userspace filesystem framework supporting an
    indefinite number of filesystems (localfs, sshfs, ftpfs, httpfs, socketfs,
    freenetfs, and nutellafs) transparently for any application. It can be
    regarded as doing the same job as the VFS (virtual filesystem switch) in
    the kernel: it is a switch, distributing the filesystem calls to its
    supported filesystems. However, LUFS filesystems are implemented in
    userspace. This would be a drawback for local filesystems where the access
    speed is important, but proves to be a huge advantage for networked
    filesystems where the userland flexibility is most important.

    sendmail and Exim MTAs, and the Sophos, McAfee, F-Prot, F-Secure,
    CommandAV, InoculateIT, Inoculan 4.x, Kaspersky, RAV, and Panda anti-virus
    scanners. It supports SpamAssassin for highly successful spam

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 23:00

    Internet

    About: MLDonkey Server Spy is an application for MLDonkey that broadcasts
    your whereabouts on the edonkey network. It will detect the server that
    you are connected to, and place this information on an image. The image is
    then uploaded to a Web server using FTP. It can then be used on Web pages,

    making it easier to get the files that you are sharing. The application
    updates the image frequently so that the latest information is always

    limited support for descriptive statistics of the submitted data, and
    stylesheet customizations of layout.

    Changes: In this version, functionality was added for "saving" a partially

    About: phpMail is a modifed version of formmail (available from Matt's
    Script Archive). It provides all of the features formmail provides, plus
    it has the abililty to log all messages sent through it. It works on any
    PHP Web server, can be set to send mail only from a certain domain, and
    redirects to another page after mail has been sent. It supports any
    number of fields sent from Web-forms.

    Changes: This release now handles single and double quotes in message
    fields, as well as back slashes. Many special characters have been tried,
    but not all have been tested.

    Printing

    About: Printquota is a printing service quota tracking tool. It allows an
    administrator to group the printer queues and users and to set permissions
    to control which user can use which printer. PostgreSQL and MySQL are
    supported.

    Changes: A logging module was added. printquota now logs successfully
    completed print jobs. Text file database support was also added, which
    allows printquota tables to be kept in text files. It is useful for those
    who do not want to install PostgreSQL or MySQL for only printquota.

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 10:50

    Software Development :: Build Tools
    Software Development :: Code Generators

    About: ProGuard is a free Java class file shrinker and obfuscator. It can
    detect and remove unused classes, fields, methods, and attributes. It can
    then rename the remaining classes, fields, and methods using short,
    meaningless names. The resulting jars are more compact and more difficult
    to reverse-engineer. Advantages of ProGuard compared to other Java
    shrinkers and obfuscators are compact template-based configuration, memory
    efficiency, and speed.

    Changes: The performance has been improved. The processing of classes
    targeted at JRE1.2 (the default in JDK1.4) with references to their own
    subclasses has been fixed. The processing of static initializers in J2ME
    MIDP applications has been fixed. The processing of retrofitted interfaces
    has been fixed (again). The handling of white space in configuration
    commands is now more flexible. The documentation has been updated.

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 16:37

    Terminals

    About: shl (the shell layer manager) can run multiple shells in parallel
    on a single terminal. It was originally introduced in AT&T's SVr3 Unix,
    but discontinued by most vendors later since csh-style job control was
    considered superior. This free implementation avoids most of the
    complications by using regular SVr4-style pseudo terminals; it can be used
    together with job control.

    Changes: The "name" command won't cause a crash when invoked without an
    argument now. Some fields in the output of the "layers -l" command were

      Sunday, August 11th 2002 15:03

    Text Editors

    About: The goal of the XMLtype project is to create a console-based editor
    of XML document-oriented files in UTF-8 encoding. It is designed from the
    beginning for multilingual use, even for writing bi-directional texts
    (e.g. mixed English and Hebrew). The design focuses on comfortable and
    fast typing of well-formed XML documents. Thus XMLtype is not meant to
    compete with advanced console editors like Emacs or VIM. For full
    functionality, XMLtype requires UTF-8 console support. It is being
    developed under Linux and for the ANSI/VT-100 terminal.
