[009] - bash programmable completion 20020812
by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
Monday, August 12th 2002 14:06
System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities
About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.
Changes: ./configure completion was not returning all possible completions
on systems with mawk instead of gawk. A space is no longer appended when
performing export completion (assuming bash 2.05b). .wmv files have been
added to those that aviplay will complete on.

by jimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimm/)
Monday, August 12th 2002 16:45
Database :: Front-Ends
Office/Business
Software Development
About: DataVision is a database reporting tool similar to Crystal Reports,
written in Java. Multiple database backends (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle,
ODBC) and frontends (LaTeX, XML, comma- and tab-separated data files,
DocBook, and HTML) are supported. DataVision uses XML files to describe
reports.
Changes: User-defined SQL columns have been added. You can now write SQL
code that returns a column value; for example, "substr(table.col, 1, 10)".
High-quality printing is restored, and all pages print. On some systems,
report window menu bars appeared behind the report output, and the menus
were "chopped off". A command line argument passing bug has been fixed.
When reading database metadata, it will try again with different arguments
instead of failing. Some users saw "java.sql.SQLException: ERROR: parser:
parse error at or near ")" or other error messages.

[056] - Moto 0.11.0 (Development)
by Dave Hakim (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhakim/)
Monday, August 12th 2002 18:00
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
About: Moto is a server-side scripting language much like PHP or
ColdFusion. The difference between Moto and other server-side scripting
languages is that Moto pages can run interpreted (like PHP) or be natively
compiled into dynamically loadable Apache modules (an entire Web site
could be compiled into one .so file). It comes with a full suite of
objects and functions for state and session management, MySQL database
connectivity, and a slew of utility classes like stacks, hashtables,
string buffers, etc. There is also an included interface definition
language for exposing C functions to Moto. All object allocation occurs in
a shared memory segment, so maintaining state in objects between page
views is a snap.
Changes: This release adds much more lenient type casting rules. All the
numeric types can now be implicitly cast to chars and vise versa. All
basic types can now be added to Strings without having to call the str()
function on them first. This release also adds support for the standard
C/Java bit operations on integral types.

About: PHPAudioFile is a class that is designed to recognize attributes of
audio files. It supports WAV, AIFF, and MP3. The attributes which are
extracted include file type, size, length, compression type, frame rate
(sample frequency), bits per channel, number of channels, and id3 tags
(v1). Furthermore, it creates PNG files to visualize audio samples in a
manner similar to waveLab and CoolEdit.
Changes: With this release, the visualization output is now fully scalable
with the attributes visual_width and visual_height. There is now the
choice between JPEG and PNG for the visualization file-format, an error
which led to the wrong bitrate/length-indication with MP3s was fixed, and
test.php now works with "register_globals = Off".

by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
Monday, August 12th 2002 06:28
System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern
matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and
ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive
compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that
allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the
only known platform independent "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
contact any OS as server.
Changes: In this version, the output from 'mt status' is no longer the
least common denominator of both (local and remote systems) when used
remotely. Mt now uses new internal abstract data structures to have the
same output that only depends on the system where the tape drive is
located. Star -wready now allows to wait for the old remote server to
finish when used repeatedly in remote backup scripts. A FIFO bug that
caused star to exit with 0 if the fifo was enabled and a tape write error
occurred was fixed. There was also a minor star remote tape speedup.

Communications
Communications :: Conferencing
Communications :: Internet Phone
About: Sfront compiles MPEG 4 Structured Audio (MP4-SA) bitstreams into
efficient C programs that generate audio when executed. MP4-SA is a
standard for normative algorithmic sound, that combines an audio signal
processing language (SAOL) with score languages (SASL, and the legacy MIDI
File Format). Under Linux, sfront supports real-time, low-latency audio
input/output, local MIDI input from soundcards, and networked MIDI input
using RTP and SIP. A SIP server hosted on the Berkeley campus manages
sessions. The documentation includes a book about SAOL programming.
Changes: This release introduces Mac OS X CoreAudio drivers, for
low-latency audio input and output. Extensively tested on a 550MHz TiBook
under 10.1.5, the driver supports the SAOL standard-name cpuload, supports
the sfront -latency flag for buffer-size tuning, and does virtual-memory
page warming and locking.

[077] - SQLite 2.6.3
by D. Richard Hipp (http://freshmeat.net/users/drh/)
Monday, August 12th 2002 20:16
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: SQLite is a C library that implements an SQL database engine. A
large subset of SQL92 is supported. A complete database is stored in a
single disk file. The API is designed for convenience and ease of use.
Applications that link against SQLite can enjoy the power and flexiblity
of an SQL database without the administrative hassles of supporting a
separate database server. Because it omits the client-server interaction
overhead and writes directly to disk, SQLite is also faster than the big
database servers for most operations. In addition to the C library, the
SQLite distribution includes a command-line tool for interacting with
SQLite databases and SQLite bindings for Tcl/Tk.
Changes: Database files can now be shared between machines with different
byte-orders.

Monday, August 12th 2002 13:23
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Version Control
About: XOTclIDE is an integrated (interactive) development environment for
the XOTcl language, a highly flexible object-oriented extension of Tcl. It
provides a Smalltalk-like programming environment similar to Visual Works,
Envy, or Visual Age, and graphical introspection and editing of a running
system (based on Tcl's and XOTcl's introspection facilities). The system
state can be saved in the form of Tcl packages. It can optionally use a
version control system based on a relational database (MySQL, PostgreSQL,
or ODBC). All system changes are saved to the database on the fly. It
provides browsers for viewing and editing xotcl classes and objects. It
also contains syntax highlighting and a static code checker for TCL and
xotcl.
Changes: XOTcl now supports PostgreSQL and any ODBC databases as a version
control database. Syntax hightlighting for tcl and xotcl code is now
