Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: aMember is a flexible user management script. It has support for
PayPal and Clickbank payment systems, and allows you to setup paid
membership areas on your site. It also can be used without any payment
system (you can manage users manually). Unique features are support for
multiple payment systems at the same time and support for multiple
products (subscriptions) with different levels of access, pricing, and
time periods.
Changes: This release adds an active subscriptions listing to the
member.php page, as well as the ability to use an HTML login form even
with .htpasswd. A configuration option has been added to disable signup
email to newly registered memebers. A "Free" payment plugin has been added
to use on sites with free but moderated membership. Two workarounds have
been added to allow functionality with Smarty on any host. The ability to
assign a prefix for MySQL tables during setup (such as 'amember_') has
been added, as well as a 2Checkout payment plugin.

[006] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.136 (Stable)
by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 01:07
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security
About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.
Changes: In this version, config file parsing now has /etc/blackhole.conf
as the base config and now individual users configs add to the settings.
There is attachment blocking by filename/extension/pattern, and an option
for [bad_attachment] was added, which takes regular expressions to check
attachment files against and blocks if they match. The ability to include
a file which contains a list of the options for the section was added.
Some compile time and portability bugs were fixed.

[010] - dobackup.pl 4.21
by Ian E. Morgan (http://freshmeat.net/users/imorgan/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 04:24
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: dobackup.pl is a flexible Perl script to handle unattended
incremental backups of multiple servers. It handles multiple media sets
with automatic media preparation and rotation, configurable
'what-to-backup', global per-host exclusion patterns, and user settable
'don't-back-this-up' metafiles. Its design goal is zero-maintenance,
nothing to do except change the media when told.
Changes: A new "timewarp" mode has been added that acts much like the old
incremental backups, but backs up everything that changed since the last
full backup. This means that only two archives are ever required to
perform a full restore for any given date. Archives are now tagged with
".full", ".incr", or ".warp" to differentiate them without having to rely
on a file size or date. The Config::IniFiles module is now used instead of
the obsolete IniConf.

[014] - Gnome Run Program Utility 0.8
by Mihai Bazon (http://freshmeat.net/users/mbazon/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 09:16
Desktop Environment
System
About: gmrun provides a small window which lets you launch programs by
typing their names. It features tab completion similar to bash or Emacs.
It can complete program names from $PATH, or if the command starts with
"/" it will complete file names. It provides a command history of
configurable size, as well as the ability to perform forward/backward
searches through the command history. gmrun was developed as a replacement
for the Gnome Run program.
Changes: Extension handlers have been implemented. This allows a file to
be run by a program which is chosen based on the file's extension. A
partially typed command can now be automatically completed after a timeout
since the last key press. This is disabled by default. You can choose to
run all commands with the system() function from libc. hite-space
characters now behave correctly in file name completion. Other minor bugs
were fixed.

[027] - Lua 5.0-alpha (Development)
by Andre Costa (http://freshmeat.net/users/costa/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 01:04
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Lua is a programming language originally designed for extending
applications, but also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone
language. Lua combines simple procedural syntax (similar to Pascal) with
powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and
extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, interpreted from
bytecodes, and has automatic memory management, making it ideal for
configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping. Lua is implemented as a
small library of C functions, written in ANSI C, and compiles unmodified
in all known platforms. The implementation goals are simplicity,
efficiency, portability, and low embedding cost.
Changes: This release includes lexical scoping, Lua coroutines, and
support for external multithreading and coroutines. Standard libraries are
now packaged in tables, tags have been replaced by metatables and tag
methods replaced by metamethods. Each function can now have its own global
table (which can be shared), there is a new boolean type, and there is now
lightweight userdata, proper tail calls, a new faster, register-based
virtual machine, support for user extensions, safe GC metamethods, and a
new error handling protocol.

by Florin Malita (http://freshmeat.net/users/mali/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 09:23

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
About: LUFS is a hybrid userspace filesystem framework supporting an
indefinite number of filesystems (localfs, sshfs, ftpfs, httpfs, socketfs,
freenetfs, and nutellafs) transparently for any application. It can be
regarded as doing the same job as the VFS (virtual filesystem switch) in
the kernel: it is a switch, distributing the filesystem calls to its
supported filesystems. However, LUFS filesystems are implemented in
userspace. This would be a drawback for local filesystems where the access
speed is important, but proves to be a huge advantage for networked
filesystems where the userland flexibility is most important.

[051] - Port Scan Attack Detector 0.9.9
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 16:28
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a program written in Perl that
is designed to work with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x
kernels, and ipchains in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the source,
destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags and
corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x kernels only), email alerting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic configuration of
ipchains/iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, for the 2.4.x kernels
psad incorporates many of the TCP signatures included in Snort to detect
highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs (e.g. EvilFTP,
GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced port
scans (syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against a machine via
nmap.
Changes: There is a bugfix for the tcpwrapper auto-blocking code on
iptables-enabled boxes, and a bugfix for protocol number processing on
ipchains boxes. A new whois lookup strategy has been added that creates
files like /var/log/psad/who.txt_IP for each scanning IP. This feature is
a prelude to snort-style logging. This release uses the latest version of
the whois client. The psad.8 man page and other documentation have been
updated.

About: Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for
Linux/Unix. It will offer support for vector and raster formats. It
currently supports spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS.
Due to the complexity of creating a feature-rich GIS application, support
for various data stores will be added in a phased approach. Ultimately, it

Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Conferencing
About: The RealizationEngine is a Web-based group communication tool which
presents information in a highly intuitive, time-delineated style. It
allows authorized individuals to have access to information, which can be
compartmentalized, restricted, or published openly, all from the same
system. Ideas are coherently threaded, and every message is searchable in
a single location, and in the context of the messages related to it. Being
a "closed system", the RealizationEngine eliminates spam, and still makes
the information available to users or visitors as appropriate even when
they are away from their "home" computer. The RealizationEngine can be
accessed from any Web browser or Web-enabled device, and can be integrated
with SSL when secure connections are required. The server requires a Web
server, MySQL, Perl, DBI, Digest::MD5, POSIX, and CGI.pm.
Changes: Workarounds were made for two MS IE bugs. The first is a 'false
cookie' problem that interrupted login intermittently. The second problem
involved non-standard filenames on attachments causing files uploaded with
IE to not be downloadable in IE. Both IE bugs created major usability
problems. The interface was also cleaned up.

[059] - Speex 0.7.0
by Jean-Marc (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmvalin/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 16:29
Communications :: Internet Phone
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech
About: Speex is a patent-free compression format designed especially for
speech. It is specialized for voice communications at low bit-rates in the
8-32 kbps/channel range. Possible applications include Voice over IP
(VoIP) applications, Internet audio streaming at low bit-rate, and
archiving of speech data (e.g. voice mail).
Changes: This release introduces a unified bit-stream for both narrowband
and wideband, meaning a bit-stream produced by the narrowband encoder can
be decoded by the wideband decoder and vice versa (--force-nb and
--force-wb options in speexdec). Because of this feature, the bit-stream
is not compatible with 0.6.0. Also, the quality of wideband at low
bit-rates was slightly improved, and the bit-rate of some modes was
slightly reduced with no loss in quality.

[065] - TuxTyping 1.0.2 (Stable)
by Criswell (http://freshmeat.net/users/criswell/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 14:21
Education
Games/Entertainment
About: TuxTyping is an educational typing tutorial game starring Tux, the
Linux Penguin. The player guides Tux to eat fish which are falling from
the top of the screen. Each fish has a letter or a word written on it.
When the player presses the corresponding key, or types the appropriate
word, Tux will position himself to eat the fish. The game is intended for
children learning to type and to spell, though it does have higher
difficulty levels which even experienced typists may find challenging.
Changes: Several stable performance and memleak patches have been applied.
The colorkeying issues with some versions of libpng have been fixed
(colorkeying is now image-per-image, instead of global). Some minor
animation speed issues (frames-on-screen, etc.) have been fixed, and there
are other misc. bugfixes.

[066] - Uncle Unc 0.24
by Dave Crane (ulunum) (http://freshmeat.net/users/ulunum/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 06:22
Communications :: Email
Database :: Front-Ends
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: Uncle Unc allows network admins and developers to keep track of
many services on a network in a flexible extendable fashion from a single
client program. The underlying protocol aims to be as generic as possible,
and offers a clean usable model for interacting with many services. In
Uncle Unc, client implementation is carefully separated from the core
protocol, allowing clients to be implemented as GUI apps, Web front-ends,
or console programs. Once adapted to Uncle Unc, a service becomes
instantly accessible from any Unc-aware client. As new service
implementations are developed, every client implementation is able to use
them. The ever-expanding list of adapters currently covers filesystems,
Java class libraries, relational databases, log-files and jini networks,
and a feature-rich, fast desktop GUI client.
Changes: The GUI client can now handle methods with complex object
arguments, by integrating a popup dialog box that searches for matching
objects in the 'scrapbook' folder.

by freshmeat
thewrittenword.com (http://freshmeat.net/users/twwlogin/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 11:09
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: The system linkers provided with AIX 4.3, HP-UX 10.x, 11.x, and
Compaq Tru64 UNIX 4.0, 5.0, 5.1 do not accept multiple runtime linker
command-line arguments (-blibpath, +b, -rpath respectively). If multiple
instances are specified, only one is used. This differs from how the
Solaris and IRIX linkers work. This tool, wrapld, is a wrapper script
around the AIX, HP-UX, and Tru64 UNIX ld command that accepts multiple
runtime linker arguments and combines them into one runtime linker
argument, separating the paths with colons.
Changes: Support for HP-UX 10.x and 11.x was added.

[074] - Xplore 1.2a
by Albert Graef (http://freshmeat.net/users/ag/)
Friday, August 16th 2002 14:19
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: Xplore is a powerful and highly configurable Motif file manager
with an Explorer-like user interface. Besides the usual tree and file
views, xplore also has a "shelf", which is a kind of clipboard inspired by
the NeXT file manager, and a "log" pane for capturing output from launched
programs. The builtin automounter allows you to access removable media in
a transparent manner. Files can be moved and copied using simple mouse
operations, and you can execute type-specific shell commands when a file
is opened, used as the target of a drag and drop operation, or manipulated
using popup menus. File types can be defined in terms of arbitrary
filename and MIME type patterns. Full keyboard navigation is also
supported, including an incremental filename search facility. Last but not
least, xplore speaks all standard X11 session management protocols and
thus integrates nicely with most popular desktop environments.
Changes: This release fixes some minor bugs introduced in 1.2, and adds
new application icons (pilfered from KDE and GNOME) and experimental
support for KDE/GNOME drag-and-drop interoperability.
