Linux in Education: Two Years Later
by Peter D. St. Onge (mailto:pete
seul.org)
Section: Editorials
Saturday, August 17th 2002 00:00
About two years ago, Doug Loss and I from the Simple End User Linux
Project (SEUL.org) wrote an editorial about the state of Linux in schools.
In the intervening time, much has happened, both inside and outside the
Linux/Free Software community, and in this editorial, I revisit the state
of Linux in terms of its use both as infrastructure and on the desktop. I
conclude by examining some of the non-technical issues impinging on the
periphery where I feel work needs to be done to make it an even more
compelling choice.

by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
Saturday, August 17th 2002 20:27
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Aapl is a C++ template library for generic programming. It contains
Linked List, Avl Tree, Vector, Binary Search Table, Double Ended Queue,
and Merge Sort. The library is designed to be versatile for the
programmer. For example, the linked list utilizes both inheritance and
templates to allow a single instance of a data structure to be an element
in multiple lists. In general, Aapl data structures do not have private
data members and are thus not abstracted away.
Changes: User documentation for most classes was written.

About: Article Manager is a fully featured Web content management system
that makes it easy for non- technical users to easily update and manage
articles, news stories, headlines, and editorials. It includes the
following features: supports multiple users with different access levels
(Administrators, Editors, Trusted Writers, and Writers), uploads up to
10 images per article, password protected login screen, advanced setup
options to make it easy to customize the program, a powerful search
engine, a customizable database, the ability to customize the HTML
templates, and much more.
Changes: This release contains a new WYSIWYG editor (which requires IE5.5+
on Windows), user specified article filenames, and the new spare field
types: text field, textarea, WYSIWYG, pull-down, and check box. Summary
and Content fields may now be disabled, the uploaded image limit was
increased to 25, archiving can now be done by date range and category
name, admin program templates can now be modified, and the global article
sorting order can be modified by the user. "Entire Site" was renamed to
"All Categories" in the search templates, and there is now a setting to

Text Processing :: Filters
About: CRM is a very powerful filtering and mutilation language based on
regex operations. It is capable of classifying mail messages, syslogs,
firewall logs, and other incoming streams of unbounded length. It has a
very powerful sparse-spectral learning capability; given examples of
multiple classes (say, business email, jokes, and spam), it can learn to
discriminate the classes.
Changes: This release contains the long-awaited sparse spectral mail
filter, which is a learning filter based on Bayesian classification of
phrases. It allows users to submit things they consider "blacklist",
"whitelist", "spam", and "nonspam" just by mailing to themselves with a
control password. Baseline setup files are included for user mode
installation. Additional functionality and an embarrassingly large number

Changes: A major rewrite of the kernel module and the utilities was made.
All network access was moved to a user space daemon, making extending and
debugging easier. It would be possible to add other file system sources
such as CVS over SSL in addition to the supported CVS pserver method. All
files read from the CVS server are now cached on the local disk, and cvsfs
gives read only access to the CVS repository. You can also direct programs

by Eleventh Hour (http://freshmeat.net/users/xihr/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: empy is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in
template text (or any other unexecuted content); it takes source files,
processes them, and produces output. These are done via expansions, which
are snippets of Python code delimited by character sequences involving a
special prefix (by default the at sign, '
'), and are substituted in the
output with the return value (for expressions) or with any in-Python
printing to stdout that takes place (for both expressions and statements).
If the value of an evaluated expression is None, nothing is expanded (that
is, it acts like the interactive Python interpreter). Textual data not
explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output file,
allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Explicit
expansion, or inclusion of other files to be expanded, is possible. Also
supported are m4-style diversions, where output can be systematically
deferred and recalled, as well as "significators," which are special
assignments forms intended to be easily parsed externally.
Changes: Bang paths are now treated as comments, 'empy.quote' does the
opposite of 'empy.expand', significators ('
%' sequences) are supported, a
'-I' option was added, and the documentation was improved.

About: fblogo will let you replace the penguin boot-logo you see when
booting Linux kernels with framebuffer support. It takes a PNG image as
input and generates an appropriate linux_logo.h, which can simply be
included in the kernel. It will be displayed when the framebuffer device
is enabled. You can also use it to generate full screen splash screens for
the Linux Progress Patch.
Changes: This release adds numerous cleanups and bugfixes. It introduces a
shell script that automatically creates a kernel patch given a logo header
file and a Linux kernel source tree. The documentation has been updated.

by Anders Fugmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/fugmann/)
Saturday, August 17th 2002 11:25
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: FIAIF is an Intelligent Firewall. It provides a highly customizable
script for setting up an iptables-based firewall. Configuration is done
through one configuration file for each network to which the firewall is
connected. FIAIF supports masquerading, port forwarding, traffic shaping,
and more.
Changes: This version now correctly sets TOS on packets originating from
the firewall itself. SNAT has been improved to cycle between all available
IPs on the interface. To ease debugging, the filename of the zone is now
displayed if an undefined zone is encountered. Traffic shaping can now be
started and stopped separately, ignoring the "ENABLE_TC" parameter in the

About: GRAB (Greg's RPM Application Builder) adds functionality and
ease-of-use to RPM, by allowing a user to search through a collection of
RPMs on various FTP servers (given in a configuration file), and download
and install all in one action. It can perform system upgrades, and display
all packages that are "outdated". It also has the ability to be run
through cron, to automatically upgrade all packages (except ones defined
in a skip list) that are available. This project began to provide similiar
functionality to RPM based distros as apt-get (Debian package tool). Apt
has since been ported to RPM. GRAB's functionality now is still fairly
similar, but also provides additional features that makes it easier to use
and more intuitive. It can also work with any FTP server, as opposed to a
specifically configured RPM repository server.
Changes: A fix for a bug in the dep resolver regarding '::' chars found in
the current Rawhide, a fix for a problem with regard to the proxy support,
fixes for other misc dependancy resolution bugs., a new alt. library path

[030] - KRunning 0.1.7 (KDE 3)
by Andreas Scherf (http://freshmeat.net/users/scherfa/)
Saturday, August 17th 2002 11:28
Database :: Front-Ends
About: KRunning is a database manager to track your personal running
(track, jogging, etc.) events. It prints all results and a document for
each runner.
Changes: This release adds runnertimeObj (every DBObj is now represented
by an Object), some functions to PositionControl (+db functions), a
PopupMenu to TimeList, and a checkIfRunnerInEvent function. It changes the

[031] - Krusader 1.10
by shie erlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/manson/)
Saturday, August 17th 2002 11:21
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Archiving
System :: Systems Administration
About: Krusader is an "old-school" file manager. Its twin-panel look
follows in the footsteps of the great file managers of old such as GNU's
Midnight Commander© and the Norton Commander© for DOS. Krusader features
an intuitive GUI, complete drag n' drop capability, transparent handling
of archives, mimetype support, and more.
Changes: This release adds batch renaming support via Krename and a new
internal editor and viewer. The commandline can now be used to "cd" into
konqi-supported URLs. Crashes on konfigurator opening and right-click menu
use were fixed, as was the crash on FAM-enabled systems. Various GUI bugs
that came with KDE3 porting are gone (but so are the mouse selection
modes) and sorting problems in the panels are no more.

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
About: LBreakout is a breakout game with nice effects, graphics, and

Changes: This release is completely themeable, and menu graphics can be
changed. Information about a theme can be displayed in a hint bubble. The
quick help is now available in the game, and all existing level sets have
been included (27 sets, about 440 levels). There were some bugfixes to
network gaming (especially to the sets MP_Arenas and MP_Snapshots), but
it's still not ready for Internet gaming despite working fine on a LAN.

[040] - newsstar 0.13.1
by Tony Houghton (http://freshmeat.net/users/realh/)
Saturday, August 17th 2002 15:33
Communications :: Usenet News
About: Newsstar fetches news and posts it to a local news server: INN,
s-news, and sn are supported. What makes newsstar special is that it can
make multiple simultaneous connections, not only to one server, but to
several, supporting up to 10 "threads". Before fetching each article, it
checks that it hasn't already been downloaded by another thread or in a
previous session. It can also "pipeline" article requests to make better
use of available bandwidth.

About: rST (remote SmallTalk) is a framework for supporting distributed

need to change your objects to become remote. Another goal is to handle
intermittence in the availability of the images, so PDA and Notebooks can
interoperate in a distributed environment. Each object decides to pass "as
