About: Alumni-OnLine is a PHP/DBMS-based program to make a connection
between alumni. Sending messages and searching for someone is so easy. It
has different levels of user rights, and is easy to install, configure,
    and use.

Changes: Editing and deleting operations on the news can now be performed
by the links near the news items. Faculties and departments can now edit
using a link in the admin menu (departments.php). A User List section was
added, which lists all users in the system. Any user can now be deleted. A
problem with quotes when saving the news into the database was corrected.

About: Anubis is an outgoing mail processor, and provides the SMTP tunnel
between the MUA (Mail User Agent) and the MTA (Mail Transport Agent). It
operates as a proxy server daemon, independently from mail user agents,
and can manage and process outgoing mail on the fly using a highly
configurable rule system, based on a regular expressions (PerlRE) system.
Anubis can edit outgoing mail headers, encrypt and/or sign mail with
GnuPG, build secure SMTP tunnels using the TLS/SSL encryption even if your
mail user agent doesn't support it, or tunnel a connection through a SOCKS
    proxy server.

Changes: For security reasons, a new USER-NOTPRIVILEGED keyword has been
added. It specifies the user which the server runs as when doing
unprivileged operations. Some additional changes and fixes have been made.

About: archivemail is a tool written in Python for archiving and
compressing old email in mailboxes. It can move messages older than the
specified number of days to a separate mbox-format mailbox that is
compressed with gzip, or optionally just delete old email. It supports
archiving mbox, MH, and maildir format mailboxes.

Changes: A bug where an exception was thrown if a message was dated
exactly on the Unix epoch has been fixed. A bug where trailing slashes on
the end of maildir/MH mailbox arguments were being used in the archive
    name was also fixed.

      Sunday, August 18th 2002 08:52

    System :: Hardware

About: cwfloppy is a Linux device driver for the Catweasel Advanced Floppy
Controller manufactured by Individual Computers. The Catweasel is a small
ISA device controlling a simple Shugart bus. It is extremely flexible and
can be programmed to read and write just about any floppy disk in the
world. This driver supports reading and writing of Amiga and MS-DOS DD/HD
    3.5" disks.

Changes: A bug in the previous release which kept Amiga writing from
working was fixed. A section about the HD indicator hole problem has been
added to the README. Upgrading is highly recommended, as the previous
development release can destroy your Amiga disks when trying to write to

About: The Linux Virus Writing HOWTO describes how to write parasitic file
viruses which infect ELF executables on Linux/i386. Though it contains a
lot of source code, no actual virus is included. Every mentioned infection
method is accompanied with a practical guide to detection.

Changes: The document was split into an introduction and a
platform-specific part. The revision history was flushed, since converting
links in old entries is too much work. i386 development was moved to
RedHat 7.3. A port to Debian GNU/Linux on SPARC was started. A rework of
the document is in progress. "The magic of the Elf" and "The language of
evil" are finished. All following chapters are probably broken.

About: The goal of the WallFire project is to create a very general and
modular firewalling application based on Netfilter or any kind of
low-level framework. Wflogs is a powerful log analysis and reporting tool.

Changes: This version mainly adds the ability to filter logs with a
Perl-like conditional expression. A Debian package is now available. This
version is considered much more mature.

    Utilities

About: Wordtrans is a frontend for several dictionaries. It supports some
plain text dictionaries such as i2e (English-Spanish) and de-en
(German-English), Babylon Translator dictionaries, and dict servers
dictionaries. Some features include console and X (Qt) versions, good
speed, and the ability to watch the clipboard and automatically translate
    the word there.

Changes: Some bugs have been fixed. There are important changes in the
Debian packages (wordtrans-console doesn't exist anymore, and is replaced
by wordtrans-qt, which is now also a console application). wordtrans-web
supports dictionaries in other charsets, which means that it's possible to
use it with dictionaries in Cyrillic, Hebrew, Greek, etc. There are now
    more dictionaries available.
