    Red Hat: Updated krb5 packages fix remote buffer overflow
    by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
    Section: Security
    Monday, August 19th 2002 13:19

    Sun RPC is a remote procedure call framework which allows clients to
    invoke procedures in a server process over a network. XDR is a mechanism
    for encoding data structures for use with RPC. The Kerberos 5 network
    authentication system contains an RPC library which includes an XDR
    decoder derived from Sun's RPC implementation. The Sun implementation was
    recently demonstrated to be vulnerable to a heap overflow. It is believed
    that the attacker needs to be able to authenticate to the kadmin daemon
    for this attack to be successful. No exploits are known to currently
    exist. Fixed packages can be obtained from updates.redhat.com.

    System :: Software Distribution Tools

    About: AutoRPM is a program that can do any combination of the following:
    mirror RPMs from an FTP site, keep installed RPMs consistent with an FTP
    site or local directory and keep installed RPMs in a cluster or network of
    systems consistent. It is highly flexible and contains a fully
    command-line driven interactive install mode (for installing RPMs from the
    queue or for installing RPMs from your system interactively). It also
    handles recursive dependencies, multiple versions of the same RPM, the
    same RPM with multiple architectures, and more. It does some of the same
    tasks as up2date and AutoUpdate.

    Changes: Delete_Old_Version() was changed to belong in the source block
    instead of the 'updated' action block.

    [009] - bash programmable completion 20020819
      by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
      Monday, August 19th 2002 13:23

    System :: Shells
    System :: Systems Administration
    Utilities

    About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
    extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
    with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
    complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
    [Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
    manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
    from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
    targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
    completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
    amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

    Changes: Linux iwconfig(8) completion has been added. xmms can now also
    complete on .xm, .mod, and .s3m files. gnatmake completion has been added
    in the contrib directory.

    About: Bayespam is a spam filter for Qmail, although it should work with

    [011] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.139 (Stable)
      by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
      Monday, August 19th 2002 11:11

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

    About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
    dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
    It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
    and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
    executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
    a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
    queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
    the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
    there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
    multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
    so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

    Changes: Each action can have its own report programs and args, setup in
    actions with exec_report_prog and exec_report_args. This can be turned off
    at compile time for untrusted users. Ripmime local copy portability was
    improved. Problems writing to the config file when it was non-existent but
    writable were fixed, allowing the config file to be set up automatically.
    A bug in spam_fwd for actions was fixed.

    System :: Boot
    System :: Boot :: Init
    System :: Software Distribution Tools

    About: Boot Scriptor is a program that allows a high degree of
    interactivity when booting from a CD- ROM drive. It provides a set of
    commands that enable users to boot a system in a number of ways, as well
    as providing interactive menus. Boot Scriptor runs on top of a
    specialized version of Isolinux and can act as a front end to it, as well
    as expanding on the Isolinux feature set to allow more complex boot
    scenarios. It supports a simple scripting language.

    Changes: This release has completely rewritten disk I/O routines and
    increased module capacity. Some compatibility issues have been fixed.

    Communications
    Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
    Communications :: Chat :: ICQ

    About: centericq is a text mode menu- and window-driven IM interface that
    supports the ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, MSN, and IRC protocols. It allows you
    to send, receive, and forward messages, URLs, SMSes (both through the ICQ
    server and email gateways supported by Mirabilis), contacts, and email
    express messages, and it has many other useful features.

    Changes: Server-based contact lists and random chat support (both
    searching for partners as well as setting your own random chat group) were
    implemented. Other new features include keyword-based search, receiving
    webpager events, controlling visibility status on the web, and contact
    list highlighting for contacts that are on visible and invisible lists.
    Fribidi support is now configurable with the configuration dialog. A more
    clever event resending mechanism was implemented so that remote IM servers

    Security
    Security :: Cryptography
    System :: Logging

    About: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that
    implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most
    forms of address space modification, confines programs with least
    privilege via its process-based ACL system, hardens syscalls, and provides
    many of the OpenBSD randomness features. It has auditing capabilities and
    a netfilter module designed to thwart portscans and OS fingerprinting.

    Changes: This release includes process-based resource restrictions, IP
    ACLs (which support all socket types, protocols, IPs with netmasks, and
    port ranges), an implementation of nergal's segvguard integrated into the
    ACL system, and an intelligent learning mode that can create least
    privilege ACLs with no configuration. Gradm, grsecurity's userland ACL
    administration tool, has also been updated to 1.5-rc1 for this release.

      by Gaylen Fraley (http://freshmeat.net/users/gcfmaf/)
      Monday, August 19th 2002 02:47

    Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment

    About: KISSQ will link to Yahoo's financial site, download the
    information, and then format it for your browser. Setup is very simple.
    The application can be run as a PHPNuke module, PostNuke module, or stand
    alone application. You can retrieve historical prices and download them,
    as well as see a chart of the current day's data. A portfolio is allowed
    using MySQL or other RDBMS. It also provides live quotes.

    Changes: This release adds Live Feeds and after hours trading results, a
    Postnuke block, the ability to download the history data, a portfolio
    summary, support for non Nuke sites, logic to allow entry of number of
    shares and purchase price, which will allow KISSQ to then calculate the
    profit/loss for each entry, a link from Block to Module, the affiliation
    of links to blocks, and changes so that percent and dollars are now
    blocks. The database was changed to include fees/commissions to be
    deducted from current value, there is a summary line in the portfolio, and

    [059] - keychain 2.0
      by Daniel Robbins (http://freshmeat.net/users/gentoo/)
      Monday, August 19th 2002 16:06

    Security
    Utilities

    About: keychain helps you to manage RSA and DSA keys in a convenient and
    secure manner. It acts as a frontend to SSH-agent, but allows you to
    easily have one long running SSH-agent process per system, rather than
    the norm of one SSH-agent per login session. This dramatically reduces
    the number of times you need to enter your passphrase - with keychain,
    you only need to enter a passphrase once every time your local machine is
     rebooted. keychain also makes it easy for remote cron jobs to securely
    "hook in" to a long running SSH-agent process, allowing your scripts to
    take advantage of RSA and DSA keys.

    Changes: There are various fixes and performance improvements, new
    commercial SSH2 support, and HP-UX and Cygwin fixes. This release stores
    keychain files inside the ~/.keychain/ directory and names files
    sh-${HOSTNAME} and csh-${HOSTNAME}. There is a new --dir option, and the
    --local option has been deprecated.

    System :: Hardware

    About: Libchipcard is a C++ framework for easy access to
    chipcards/smartcards via chip card terminals/readers. It uses the CTAPI
    library provided by the manufacturer of the reader and provides a
    filesystem on memory chip cards. It works under Linux, FreeBSD, and
    Windows, and has been tested with Towitoko and Kobil readers even in
    parallel.

    Changes: This version features a simplified and cleaned up API, support
    for PC/SC (SCard) driven terminals, and a graphical setup tool to
    configure PC/SC readers. It also provides a new file system for memory
    chip cards, which is much easier and better than its predecessor. A daemon

    database. You can add an MP3/Ogg manually or by scanning a harddrive/CD
    for files. Information about the MP3s is obtained using their ID3 (v1 and
    2) tags. Ogg files are scanned by their comment tags. You can search this
    database for MP3s/Oggs using CD ID, artist, album, or title as the key.
    The CD ID is the ID of the harddrive/CD on which the MP3/Ogg resides,
    allowing you to easily find the physical location of files.

    Changes: Re-ordered the import classes, and added better Ogg/Vorbis
    support using 'average bitrate' instead of 'nominal bitrare'. It now also
    reads the playing time from the file rather than calculating it.

    About: Navigatrix is a GPS navigational system for KDE.

    Changes: This release contains two new important additions. First, an
    "Auto Center" option was added that causes the chart to be centered on the
    current location as reported by the GPS. This option is turned on when GPS
    tracking is first enabled. The option can be toggled on and off with the

    to stack allocation and overflow handling. Bignum multiplication now uses
    algorithms from GMP. The CCL:COPY-FILE function is implemented, and the
    debugger allows access to values in stack frames. There have also been
    several bugfixes: the generic function CHANGE-CLASS now accepts initarg

    About: Sendmail is a Mail Transfer Agent, which is the program that moves
    mail from one machine to another. Sendmail implements a general
    internetwork mail routing facility, featuring aliasing and forwarding,
    automatic routing to network gateways, and flexible configuration.

    Changes: In this version, several mostly minor problems have been fixed,
    e.g. queue selection in case of invalid recipients might have been wrong,
    a combination of FallbackMXhost and relay_based_on_MX would result in an
    open relay, owner- envelope splitting was broken if SuperSafe was set to
    interactive, base64 encoded client authentication data for SMTP AUTH may
    not work, and the treatment of $#discard for recipients might have been

    Communications :: Chat
    Communications :: File Sharing

    About: Soulseek (http://www.slsk.org) is a communication and file-sharing
    system. It is quite similar to Napster: it lets you exchange files, search
    for files, chat with other users in public and in private, browse their

    client for the system written in Python/wxPython. It includes all the
    major functionality: chat, searches and downloads.

    Changes: This release has file sharing and uploads, updated Mac OS X
    instructions, download privileges checking, and speed and time
    elapsed/left in the transfers lists. Search results now show how many
    files users have in the queue. Clearing transfers should now work

    About: This Tiny Vector and Matrix template library uses Meta Templates
    and Expression Templates (ET) to evaluate results at compile time, thus
    making it fast for low-end systems. Temporaries are avoided because of
    this. The produced code is similar to hand-coded code, but the quality of
    the code still depends on the compiler and its version. The dimensions for
    vectors and matrices are static and bounded at compile time using template
    arguments.

    Changes: The STL interface has been improved so that Matrix and Vector now
    support reverse iterators. The support for IO stream manipulators and the
    ostream operators self was enhanced. The main feature is the better
    support for different platforms and the prefixed config header defines so

    About: WebVal is a system that will scan documents for fully-qualified
    HTTP URLs, keeping its database fresh with newly-seen URLs. It can then be
    requested to validate the URLs, whereby it will attempt to access each URL
    via an HTTP request and record the response code; it maintains a list of
    the most recent codes that have been retrieved. Response codes are
    classified as "good" (URL is correct and a valid page is there) and "bad"
    (URL is invalid or outdated). By default any code other than a 2xx code is
    considered bad, but this can be changed (e.g. to ignore 3xx redirection
    codes). WebVal can then be used in report mode where it will scan
    documents for URLs as before, but will report invalid URLs (that is, URLs
    in the database which have a number of "bad" codes exceeding a certain
    threshold). These are then printed to stderr in a format that shows the
    file and line number the URLs were seen in so that they can be corrected.
