    [001] - Argo/UML 0.11.2
      by Thierry Lach (http://freshmeat.net/users/thierrylach/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:26

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: Argo/UML is a pure Java open source CASE tool that provides
cognitive support for object-oriented design. Argo/UML provides some of
the same editing and code generation features of a commercial CASE tool,
but it focuses on features that enhance usability and support the
cognitive needs of designers. Uses XML file formats: XMI and PGML.

Changes: This is a developer's release in preparation for version 0.12.
The inability to assign names to Collaborations was fixed. Importing a
class from another package now works. Reverse engineering no longer causes
a project to be marked as changed. Minor GUI corrections and enhancements
were made. The stereotypes for Packages & Model were corrected.
Disappearing modal dialogs and attribute display inconsistencies were
fixed. A problem with deleting diagrams was fixed. Several issues with
saving were resolved. An exception thrown when adding an attribute was
fixed. Garbled association text on a class diagram was fixed. Several code
    generation issues were solved.

    [002] - Auto-Reconnection ADSL Wanadoo 0.5
      by shtrom (http://freshmeat.net/users/shtrom/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 01:04

    System :: Networking

About: Auto-Reconnection ADSL Wanadoo is a set of scripts for
automatically reconnecting an ADSL Internet connection. It relaunches pppd
whenever the TCP or physical link is dead.

Changes: Added 4 scripts for controlling execution. It's now possible to
use pppoa3. The install script now saves existing files before overwriting
    them.

    [003] - AWOL 3.0
      by topher1kenobe (http://freshmeat.net/users/topher1kenobe/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:16

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
    Office/Business

About: AWOL is an in/out board, similar to something you'd see on the wall
of a lobby or desk of a switchboard operator, to keep track of who's in
the building, when they'll be back, etc. It's accessable from the Web, so
people can mark themselves in or out from their own desk.

Changes: This release adds a new authentication system, permissions
levels, and much stronger personal information editing. It is almost a
    complete rewrite.

    [004] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.142 (Stable)
      by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:19

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

Changes: Fixes were made in the config file reading code. A bug in charset
and attachment matching was fixed. Sendmail maildir support was fixed so
that sendmail can use it. The ./byz_scripts directory was added, and
contains scripts that use Bayesian classification. These scripts can be
used to gather lists of ranked words to use in the custom body check. This
sort of feature will eventually be built into blackhole.

II. CrashEcho supports *.MSG (FTS-0001) and JAM message-bases, Binkley and
Amiga-style outbounds, passthrough tossing, built-in areafix, and request
    forwarding.

Changes: Dupebase handling was rewritten. Some fixes were made in

    [007] - Cyrus IMAP Server 2.1.6
      by Rob Siemborski (http://freshmeat.net/users/robsiemb/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 13:08

    Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
    Internet

About: The Cyrus IMAP server is generally intended to be run on sealed
systems, where normal users are not permitted to log in. The mailbox
database is stored in parts of the filesystem that are private to Cyrus.
All user access to mail is through the IMAP, POP3, or KPOP protocols. The
private mailbox database design gives the server large advantages in
efficiency, scalability, and administratability. Multiple concurrent
read/write connections to the same mailbox are permitted. The server
supports access control lists on mailboxes and storage quotas on mailbox
hierarchies, multiple SASL mechanisms, and the Sieve mail filtering
    language.

Changes: This release includes cleanup of a number of memory and file
descriptor leaks, corrections in how strlcpy() is used, and locking
improvements for CREATE and RENAME operations.

      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 13:15

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Documentation

About: The goal of this EJB Benchmark is to provide some objective basis
for the hard design decisions every EJB development team has to make. It
is a study comparing the relative performance of six EJB design idioms.
You may be surprised to find that a flawed architecture of your EJB
application could lead to performance 120 times slower than that possible
with an appropriate architecture. This program is useful if you are having
performance troubles with your J2EE app.

Changes: This release tests a new Idiom (Container-Managed Entity Beans),
is coded to the EJB 2.0 specification, works with Weblogic 7.0, JBoss 3.0,
and Orion Server 1.6, and works with the Hypersonic database.

    [012] - FireSite DR6 alpha
      by dotvoid (http://freshmeat.net/users/dotvoid/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 04:23

    Software Development

About: FireSite is a content management system in PHP targeted at web
developers needing a fixed framework for handling information and access
to that information. The access model is based on roles and users. The
system has an API to access information stored, hiding the access
management completely. Through modules it is easy to add handling of
    specific information needs.

Changes: This development release features a GUI makeover, and is now more
consistent and easier to use. Work has started on better indexing and
search engine as well as a statistics module and a new, improved article
module. Additionally, a new Web site template to use with Firesite is

    [014] - Gcount 0.5
      by Scott Baker (http://freshmeat.net/users/muerte2/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 13:27

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: GCount is an attempt to make a solid Web-based counter completely
in PHP. It uses MySQL as its backend to store counter information, and the
GD library to slice up the images on thy fly and display them.

Changes: Agent detection has been drastically improved. This release
should be able to determine the browser/OS for more than 30 (Mac, Linux,
Windows, and other) known combinations, and guess fairly accurately at the
rest. The MySQL code now resides in one file (mysql.php) instead of having
a little piece in all the scripts. The table names have been changed, and
    should be more clear now.

    [015] - Gnometab 0.6.2
      by Bill Guelker (http://freshmeat.net/users/wguelker/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 20:23

    Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Gnometab aims to be a WYSIWYG guitar tablature editor. Its features
include copying and pasting of tablature passages, a chord library (which
the user must fill), the ability to create a variety of tablature symbols
specific to the guitar, and clean-looking printed output. It does not
attempt to be "smart", i.e. it does not know how many beats are in a
measure, nor does it know an E chord from an Am chord. Instead, the
emphasis has been on the appearance of the output.

Changes: This release adds a working print preview and zoom controls on
the main toolbar. Some RPM packages are now available.

    Scientific/Engineering

About: GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by
both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured
documents via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program
implements high quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also
possible to use TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems.
Finally, TeXmacs supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes
it possible to adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to
    extend the editor.

Changes: Conversions to LaTeX no longer depend on the TeXmacs.sty style
file; TeXmacs-specific features are now included directly in the preamble
when needed. You may now use C-tab to circulate through alternatives for
the innermost block environment. The menus have been polished further, and
the menu generation is entirely done in Scheme.

      by ZZamboni (http://freshmeat.net/users/zamboni/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:17

About: GrabCartoons is yet another comic-grabbing utility. It is modular,
and it is very easy to write modules for new comics. To avoid depriving
the comic Web sites from their hits, grabcartoons does not download a copy
of the images, but only generates a page with links to them.

Changes: A bug in the Sinfest module was fixed. One option was added
(--version) and one renamed (--html to --htmllist). Some minor changes to
the output header and footer were made. The search mechanism for modules
    directories was improved.

About: Hibernate is a powerful, high performance object/relational
persistence and query service for Java. It lets you develop persistent
objects following common Java idiom, including composition, association,
inheritance, polymorphism, and the Java collections framework. To allow a
rapid build procedure, Hibernate rejects the use of code generation or
bytecode processing. Instead, runtime reflection is used and SQL
generation occurs at system startup time. It supports Oracle, DB2, MySQL,
PostgreSQL, Sybase, Interbase, Microsoft SQL Server, Mckoi SQL, Progress,
    SAP DB, and HypersonicSQL.

Changes: This version significantly refactored the core persistence engine
with improved outer-join fetching, collection fetching, collection
updates, and update batching. A new "bag" collection style was also added.

    [025] - HTML.Template 0.1.0 (Development)
      by BluesMoon (http://freshmeat.net/users/bluesmoon/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 16:30

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: HTML.Template is a Java package that lets you use HTML Templates in
your Java programs. Templates are simple HTML files with a few extra tags
representing variables, branches, and loops. Your Java program will
provide the values for these variables. It allows you to change the look
of your servlets without having to recompile them. HTML.Template aims to
be compatible with the HTML::Template Perl module.

Changes: This version now supports a hash table style constructor
parameter, and allows booleans and integers as constructor parameters, in
addition to Strings as before. The path parameter accepts a single string
as well as an array of strings. setParam now accepts int, boolean, integer
and boolean in addition to string. An interface for HTML.Template filters
has been added. A bug that prevented templates passed as a file handle
from working has been fixed, as well as one that prevented mixed-case
    filenames in include parameters.

      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 01:14

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
    Software Development

About: Embperl gives you the power to embed Perl code in your HTML or
XML/XSLT documents and the ability to build your Web site out of small
reusable objects in an OO-style. It can also build taglibs and use
caching. You can also take advantage of hundreds of Perl modules which
have already been written for such tasks as database access to a growing
number of database systems. Embperl has several features especially useful
for creating HTML, including dynamic tables, formfield-processing,
escaping/unescaping, session handling, and more. Embperl is a server-side
tool, which means that it's browser-independent. It can run in various
ways: under mod_perl, as a CGI script, or offline.

Changes: Fine tuning and bugfixes, and support for mod_perl 2.0 with
prefork MPM (threaded MPM will require Perl 5.8.0). Documentation has been
improved, but some features are still only documented in README.v2.

difference from most other DB abstraction packages is that MDB goes much
further to ensure portability. It features various fetch modes, emulation
for sequences, replace, prepare/execute, row limit, support for LOBs,
transactions, XML-based schema management, and wrappers for PEAR DB,
    Metabase, and the PEAR framework.

      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:47

    Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools were made to send and receive SMS from one or
many GSM modems. They include two simple commandline-driven tools, a

    [078] - UESQLC 0.9.0
by Rafael Jesus Alcantara Perez (http://freshmeat.net/users/ralcan/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 11:13

    Database
    Database :: Front-Ends
    Software Development :: Compilers

About: Universal Embedded SQL Compiler (UESQLC) is a compiler that
provides a common way for accessing heterogeneous databases. UESQLC is
based on Structured Query Language (SQL) as a standard for accessing data.
This interface provides maximum interoperability, i.e. a single
application can access different SQL Database Management Systems (DBMS)
through a common set of embedded SQL code (UESQL). This enables a
developer to build and distribute a client/server application without
    targeting a specific DBMS.

Changes: Massive changes for supporting ISO/ANSI C++ were made. Support
was added for Java as a host language. Initial support for JDBC as a
target was added. A shared library was added. Better error checking and
reporting was added. Many more enhancements and some fixes were made.

About: Vega Strike is a Linux action space simulator designed to bring 3d
space combat to a whole new level of graphics, gameplay, and
    customizability.

Changes: Added unique rendered bases that have different times of day and
a bartender that a player may chat with. News and bar tips were added,
which actually affect the course of the game while the player is building
up their starship. New starships and bases were added for the Aera and
Rlaan races, so the player can trade with the enemy. Special anomalies and
phenomena were added around black holes, along with mysterious aliens. A
map can be accessed with shift-M.

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: This Per/CGI/DBI program combines the ability to create individual
pages for people (organization members, presumably) with an organizational
bibliography capability. It can allow the individuals to edit/revise their
personal pages as well as their personal bibliography items, which
accumulate for the whole organization. This software is ideal for academic
departments or organizations that want to give members direct, password
protected, secure access to information they submit.

Changes: This integrates a script called "people" to create/revise user
pages with a series of scripts to insert, modify, browse, and search a
    bibliographic database.

About: WinDriver is a professional PCI/ISA/ISAPnP/EISA device driver
development tool for Linux 2.0.31 and above. It lets you use powerful
wizards to access and diagnose your hardware from an intuitive user mode
interface. The wizard will also automatically generate your skeletal
driver. Drivers written using WinDriver will also compile and run in
Solaris 2.6, 2.7 (both x86 and Sparc), Windows NT/2000/XP, Windows
95/98/Me, Windows CE, and VxWorks. It also supports cPCI and USB in
Windows. WinDriver includes Remote WinDriver, which enables developers to
access hardware on any remote target machine, including embedded systems,
from a host machine, via any network connection (LAN, WAN, dialup, etc.).

Changes: Added 64-bit data transfers on x86 machines, which utilizes new
64-bit busses on existing 32-bit Linux operating systems and achieves the
maximum performance for drivers. Support was enhanced for PLX Technology's
new PCI 9656 I/O Accelerator chip.

    [085] - XNap 2.2
      by yven leist (http://freshmeat.net/users/leist/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 16:44

About: XNap is a plugin-based Java file sharing client. It has OpenNap
support with the ability to connect to multiple OpenNap servers, do
multiple concurrent searches, do automatic downloading, and resume
incomplete downloads, and has a full featured Chat and Hotlist
implementation. Support for Gnutella and OpenFT is underway. You can view
and search your Media files and play them conveniently from within XNap.
It also provides a command line interface for use on a terminal.

Changes: This release fixes a very grave upload corruption bug which
existed since somewhere around XNap 1.2. It was apparently only triggered
in certain circumstances, but upgrading is highly recommended nonetheless.
This release is also translated into Spanish, and some other smaller bugs
    were fixed.

      by Michal Kosmulski (http://freshmeat.net/users/mkosmul/)
      Wednesday, August 21st 2002 05:55

About: The Zeta potential calculation tools are a C++ library, a command
line tool, and a Windows GUI for calculating zeta potentials for ka > 6
from electrophoretic mobilities measured at the stationary level or from
apparent zeta potentials displayed by zetameter (estimated by the
Smoluchowski equation). Apparent mobilities are measured at 3 different
levels in a rectangular electrophoretic cell (aspect ratio > 4), and can
