    About: Achievo is a Web-based project management and tracking tool for
    small- to medium-sized companies, aiming to become a fully featured
    ERP-like system in the future. Features include a time registration module
    with several statistical tools. Achievo is multi-language, fully
    customizable, and uses a modular system to allow future extensions.

    Changes: A vulnerability was discovered that could allow persons to
    execute arbitrary code on any Web server that runs Achievo versions 0.7 to
    0.9.1. This release fixes the vulnerability. If your Achievo installation
    is accessible from the Internet, upgrading is highly recommended.

    Software Development :: Build Tools
    Software Development :: Testing
    Software Development :: Version Control

    About: Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management
    system. It provides a framework within which a team of developers may work
    on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis coordinates
    integrating these changes back into the master source of the program, with
    as little disruption as possible. Aegis supports geographically
    distributed development.

    Changes: A bug has been fixed in the aetar -receive command, where it
    incorrectly complained about short input files. A bug has been fixed in
    the aeimport(1) command; the symptom was that the aecp -delta command
    misbehaved. A bug has been fixed in the aepatch -send command, where it
    would add Index lines for files with no differences.

    System
    System :: Systems Administration

    About: Alist is a program that collects hardware and software information
    about systems and stores it in a database for users to browse and search
    via a Web interface. The program consists of three parts: a client portion
    that collects the information, a daemon that receives data sent from
    clients, and a CGI that displays and lets you search for information.
    Clients for Solaris, Linux, FreeBsd, OpenBSD, and Mac OS X are currently
    available.

    Changes: This release includes syntax changes to get Alist to run under
    Perl 5.004. It removes the -I switch and replaces it with a Begin block
    that modifies INC, replaces the bareword hash key values with quoted
    ones, replaces zero look behind assertion in split() regex in split_line()
    sub with ordinary regex, adds a check for old versions of Perl and reports
    the Perl version in output, and disables Posix values for old versions of
    Perl. This module is not included in 5.004.

      by Stefan Bodewig (http://freshmeat.net/users/bodewig/)
      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 13:50

    Software Development :: Build Tools

    About: Ant is a Java based build tool, similar to make, but with better
    support for the cross platform issues involved with developing Java
    applications. Ant is the build tool of choice for all Java projects at
    Apache and many other Open Source Java projects.

    Changes: This release fixes most bugs reported against 1.5; most
    importantly, the wrapper scripts have been improved to work properly with
    Cygwin. Another major bug affected all custom tasks that were used in

    [009] - AppWrap 0.03

      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 19:55

    Database :: Front-Ends
    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
    Office/Business :: Groupware

    About: AppWrap is a self-organizing Web site using a Web GUI frontend to a
    backend database. It is intended for companies wanting to manage mildly
    dynamic data online without the labor of hand-coding and managing multiple
    CGI forms, or the expense of CRM systems. Users can input and edit data,
    view, sort and filter it onscreen, download it, chart it, calendar it, and
    track changes. Administrators can quickly add data tables to the site
    using a provided script; this script populates reasonable default values
    in the meta-data tables. After running the script admins can customize
    onscreen appearance by modifying the default values. All changes to
    onscreen appearance are made by changing values in the meta-data tables.

    Changes: This release concentrated on improving the installation process.
    Production code was repackaged for a make-based installation. If
    prerequisites (mod_perl, MSQL, PHP helpful for running phpMyAdmin, but
    this is not essential) are already installed, then "perl Makefile.PL &&
    make && make install" will install the distribution, and then you upload
    the included demo database and start the server. Lots of documentation was
    also included (both in the demo db, and as POD).

    build on surface and underwater, build an empire, trade with other people,
    and build guilds are among the goals for this project.

    Changes: In this version, game logic is being implemented. There are

    Software Development :: Libraries
    Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

    About: The C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) is a simple alternative to
    the STL that includes multithreading and networking. It defines dynamic
    strings, character sets, lists, and other basic data types along with
    threads, synchronization, and IP sockets. It is portable across modern
    Unix and Windows systems, and includes a sample HTTP daemon showing the
    full power of the library.

    Changes: In this release, dynamic strings have been optimized and
    thoroughly tested. Compared to MFC CString class, PTypes dynamic strings
    now show much better performance. A bug was fixed in decodedate(). This
    function worked incorrectly for the last day (12/31) of each leap year in
    all previous versions. A sample compile-time module for wshare, which
    responds to http://hostname/.about requests, is included.

    Internet

    About: dircproxy is an IRC proxy server ("bouncer") designed for people
    who use IRC from lots of different workstations or clients, but wish to
    remain connected and see what they missed while they were away. You
    connect to IRC through dircproxy, and it keeps you connected to the
    server, even after you detach your client from it. While you're detached,
    it logs channel and private messages as well as important events, and when
    you reattach it'll download those logs to you using ordinary IRC protocol.

    Changes: Signals are now handled in a more reentrant way to prevent any
    zombie/defunct processes. The DCC error messages were improved. There is a
    new logging infrastructure, the internal log directory name generation was
    fixed so that different connections' logs don't occasionally get merged,
    private messages are now internally logged and recalled separately, and
    for your own permanent copy they are logged in files named after the
    nickname rather than all together.

    Desktop Environment
    System :: Networking
    Terminals

    About: DIET-PC (DIskless Embedded Technology Personal Computer) is an
    open source software kit that enables IT professionals to build generic
    or special-purpose thin clients based on commodity x86 PC hardware, using
     an embedded Linux methodology. Supported protocols include X11/XDMCP,
    ICA, RDP, and RFB.

    Changes: The major improvement in this release is management of multiple
    embedded GUI applications, either concurrently (using minimalist window
    manager "evilwm"), or on an operating mode (runlevel separation) basis.
    Other improvements are largely concerned with initrd footprint reduction
    and improved security. DIET-PC now runs comfortably in 24 Mb of RAM in
    most cases. All embedded applications (apart from the X server) now run as
    an unprivileged user, to reduce exposure of the thin client's Linux OS.

    About: DWI (Data With Interaction) is a simple RAD (rapid application
    development) system for quickly creating data-driven applications: that
    is, graphical apps that manipulate and show info from an SQL database. It
    Uses XML and GNOME Glade for the GUI designer.

    Changes: This release provides support for a generic database login
    dialog. This dialog is written in DWI itself, and so is an example of DWI
    'bootstrapping'. This feature requires the use of glib-2.0 gobjects.
    Unfortunately, glib-2.0 can occasionally conflict with some GTK 1.4
    widgets, leading to difficulties in certain cases. (Of course, this won't
    be a problem when DWI is ported to the full GNOME 2.0 interfaces.)

      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 22:15

    Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

    About: FOX is a popular C++-based toolkit for GUI development. It includes
    a rich set of widgets and has powerful yet simple layout managers, MDI
    widgets, and mega-widgets. FOX incorporates support for XDND for drag and
    drop, X clipboard and X Selection, watching other I/O channels and
    sockets, timers and idle processing, object serialization and
    deserialization, a registry to save persistent settings, and 3D widgets
    using Mesa or OpenGL. FOX works on Linux, IRIX, Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, Tru64
    Unix, Windows 9x,NT,2K (VC++, GNUWIN32, Borland, VisualAge C++), FreeBSD,
    and Sequent.

    Changes: As of this week, there has been an addendum to the Lesser General
    Public License governing the distribution of FOX. The intent of the change
    is to make it more practical for applications to link statically against
    FOX. An esoteric FXFileList bug has been fixed; certain programs (ws_ftp)
    would set a bogus file time. Other bugfixes were made in FXGLViewer,

      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 04:10

    About: KDE is a powerful graphical desktop environment for Unix
    workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality and
    outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the
    Unix operating system. KDE is a completely new desktop, incorporating a
    large suite of applications for Unix workstations. While KDE includes a
    window manager, file manager, panel, control center and many other
    components that one would expect to be part of a contemporary desktop
    environment, the true strength of this exceptional environment lies in the
    interoperability of its components.

    Changes: Konqueror now has tabbed browsing, folder icons which reflect a
    folder's contents, and a detailed list view with meta-information. KMail
    has S/MIME, PGP/MIME, and X.509v3. A VNC-compatible desktop sharing server
    and client have been added. New are a golf game (Kolf), an Atlantik and
    Monopoly-type game (Atlantik), and a Blackjack game (Megami). There is a
    new multimedia framework for video. The address book now supports LDAP,
    printing, and vCards. There is an improved panel, theme manager, terminal

      by flamingcow (http://freshmeat.net/users/flamingcow66/)
      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 13:25

    Communications :: Email :: Filters

    About: MessageWall is an SMTP proxy. It sits between the outside world and
    your mail server and keeps out viruses, spam, and mail relaying. It offers
    filtering via header and body checks, DNS-based blacklists for IP
    addresses (DNSBL) and domains (RHSBL), DNS-based distributed checksumming
    (DNS DCC) similar to Vipul's Razor, and Open AntiVirus pattern scanning.
    Unlike many existing ISP-level filtering solutions, it offers
    customization of filtering features on a per-address basis. Unlike
    SpamAssassin, it communicates via SMTP, so it works with any MTA. It also
    supports scoring based on rules with a rejection threshold; this allows
    hybrid warning/rejection configurations based on how many and which rules
    a message matches.

    Changes: There is an SMTP dequoting bugfix, code cleanups, and a warning

    About: MiddleMan is a fast HTTP/HTTPS proxy server with features designed
    to remove unwanted content and increase privacy. It uses an XML
    configuration file, and is fully compatible with the HTTP 1.1 protocol
    including persistent proxy connections and chunked encoding. It can be
    used to block certain URLS, mimetypes, cookies, and HTTP headers, and can
    filter the content of Web pages using either its builtin rewrite feature
    or any external program or script.

    Changes: Work on a new Web interface for accessing proxy settings has been
    started, the new MIME-type of content parsed with an external program can
    now be retrieved via a Content-type header sent by the program, and

    System :: Logging

    About: NEPM monitors and reports uptime, critical events and their
    predecessors, access rates, bytes-served rates, and error rates for
    network node equipment. Hardware and software elements within the nodes
    are tracked and reported separately to make possible rapid fault
    isolation. It is a very general, highly configurable, two-part software
    system that captures and analyzes logged performance data from
    IP-networked equipment and reports it via email and Web pages. Current
    conditions and history from systems based on Windows NT/2000, Unix, and
    Unix-style operating systems can be tracked and reported. Most major
    server, switch and router systems can be monitored, without running agents
    on the target systems. NEPM itself is system-independent and can be hosted
    on either a Unix or Win NT system or a combination of these with equal

    Software Development :: Interpreters

    About: PLP is yet another Perl embedder, primarily for HTML documents.
    Unlike with other Perl embedders, there is no need to learn a meta-syntax
    or object model: one can just use the normal Perl constructs. PLP runs
    under mod_perl for speeds comparable to those of PHP, but can also be run
    as a CGI script.

    Changes: More cleanups were made. %get is now built when a script starts,
    instead of when it is first accessed. $r->print is used now under mod_perl
    instead of print. Small documentation fixes were made. Setting a header

    table relations and descriptive information), an HTML form for further
    detailed information, and Docbook 4.1 style XML for inclusion with project
    documentation as an appendix. It works on any 7.x PostgreSQL-based
    database.

    Changes: This release implements schemas and other new features of
    Postgresql 7.3. GraphViz output patches and HTML markup patches have been
    applied. Documentation for functions, and database comments have been
    added to the Docbook output. The Docbook output was changed to create a

    [074] - SLOCCount 2.15
      by David A. Wheeler (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidawheeler/)
      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 23:40

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Quality Assurance

    About: SLOCCount is a suite of programs for counting physical source lines
    of code (SLOC) in possibly large software systems. It can count physical
    SLOC for a wide number of languages. It can take a large set of files and
    automatically categorize their types using a number of different
    heuristics, and also comes with analysis tools.

    Changes: This version adds support for Standard ML (as language "ml"), and
    now recognizes ".hh" as C++. ".inc" files are now examined to determine if
    they are Pascal or PHP (before they were assumed to be PHP). Pascal
    detection has improved. A bug in handling many PHP files in one package
    was fixed. SLOCCount had problems with files including CR and other weird
    characters at the end of the filename; this is now fixed.

    [075] - Smtpblock 2.7
      by David Bellizzi (http://freshmeat.net/users/dbelliz/)
      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 13:59

    Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

    About: Smtpblock is a tool that parses your UNIX mail log. When new mail
    messages are detected, it performs DNSBL/SMTP relay tests. If the host is
    listed in a DNSBL or relays third-party mail, Smtpblock creates a firewall
    rule to block access to the localhost's SMTP port and/or creates a hash
    that can be referenced by sendmail's RFC-822 pattern matching feature. It
    keeps track of each host's test status and time when it will need to be
    rechecked, reducing the need to constantly check every host sending mail
    to the local system. Smtpblock can be run as a daemon continuously
    checking the mail log or as a standalone program parsing the entire log
    file. Hosts can be manually checked, blocked, or unblocked from the
    command line.

    Changes: This release fixes typos in the smtpblock.conf file, updates the
    FAQ documentation procedures for restarting smtpblock after log rotation,
    and removes unneeded SIGCHLD code and unneeded code from the
    smtpblock_makehash.sh file.

    System :: Networking

    About: sonar is a network reconnaissance utility. It runs all its scans
    from plugins. The currently supported plugins are an ICMP scan (a la the
    original sonar) and an ACK scan which can see if hosts that don't respond
    to ICMP are online. With the ability to create your own plugins, sonar is
    becoming the most extensible security scanner available.

    Changes: This release fixes a few annoying bugs. It should still compile
    on Solaris; if not, check the project page's helpdesk for a Solaris patch
    soon. Also, the ICMP scan has been made more versatile. It now allows you
    to choose an ICMP type (echo by default) and an ICMP code (0 by default).

    Software Development :: Code Generators
    Software Development :: Object Brokering

    About: SPOPS (Simple Perl Object Persistence w/ Security) is a robust and
    powerful Perl module that allows you to serialize objects. It is unique in
    that it also allows you to apply security to these objects using a fairly
    simple but powerful scheme of users and groups. It's also unique in that
    for most objects, you will not need to write any code. All you need is a
    fairly simple configuration file, and you can have a class for your object
    ready to go, right out of thin air.

    Changes: This release adds lots of test and enhances documentation,
    particularly on object relationships. Multiple-field primary key objects
    exhibit more consistent behavior, and there are other small fixes and

    [087] - TreeLine 0.4.0
      by Doug Bell (http://freshmeat.net/users/Doug101/)
      Thursday, August 22nd 2002 09:55

    Other/Nonlisted Topic

    About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
    structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
    information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
    forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
    output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
    structure is navigated and edited in the left pane of the window, while
    various views of the child data are shown and editable in the right pane.
    The data is stored in XML text files. TreeLine is based on the PyQt
    library.

    Changes: Data fields can now be formatted as specific types, including
    long text, numbers, dates, times, and boolean values. Individual fields
    can be specified as plain text or HTML. Line breaks are preserved in plain
    text mode. Fields can be assigned prefixes and suffixes that do not
    display for blank fields. Some options are now saved with the file instead
    of being global. Node titles are truncated after the first line of text
    data. Node types can be set conditionally. Finally, a new option sets the
    number of lines in a long text edit field.

    About: VOS (Virtual Object System) is a hierachical distributed object
    system. It is an infrastructure for object-oriented network communication
    and building distributed object networks. The protocol is XML-based and
    extensible, and features a simple, yet powerful, variable substitution
    language. The networking layer is designed to support development of a
    mutiuser virtual reality system, and so the second part of the VOS project
    is building this application. The 3D client enables multiple users to see
    each other move about a virtual environment and exchange chat messages,
    and a user can manipulate objects in the environment with the mouse and
    add new ones with a seperate program.

    Changes: In this release, the source tree has been completely reorganized
    and modularized. Connections between sites may now be secured with
    Transport Layer Security (TLSv1) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSLv3) using
    OpenSSL. VOS now has a fairly complete set of Perl bindings, including
    support for registering Perl code as listeners, and using Perl to extend
    MetaObjects. Type, subobject, and method names now conform to a standard
    namespace scheme to avoid future conflicts. The manual now has full code
