[001] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.7.1BETA-3
by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
Friday, August 23rd 2002 22:44
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Arno's IPTABLES firewall script was originally derived from Seven's
(single-homed) IPTABLES script. The biggest differences are that this
script has support for dual-homed machines, support for masquerading
(NAT), support for ADSL modems (for both static and dynamically assigned
IPs), and support for all IP protocols (which enables support for VPN). It
also features (stealth) portscan detection, extensive user definable
logging with rate limiting to prevent log flooding, port forwarding,
optimizing the throughput of your internet connection, protection against
SYN/ICMP flooding (DoS attacks), and much more. It's easy to configure and
highly customizable. It additionally includes a filter script (fwfilter)
to make your firewall log more readable.
Changes: A new variable DYNAMIC_IP for people who get a dynamically
assigned IP from their ISP through DHCP, changing MODEM_ETH & MODEM_ETHIP
names to MODEM_IF and MODEM_IF_IP (consistency), strenghtened protection
for new connections not started through the proper TCP/SYN scheme, a major
update for the ports list of fwfilter, new support for a seperate BLOCKED
HOSTS file (new command BREREAD introduced for this), moving the traffic
shaper to a separate script to enhance security, and a lot of other
bugfixes, small additions, and tweaks.

site or local directory and keep installed RPMs in a cluster or network of
systems consistent. It is highly flexible and contains a fully
command-line driven interactive install mode (for installing RPMs from the
queue or for installing RPMs from your system interactively). It also
handles recursive dependencies, multiple versions of the same RPM, the
same RPM with multiple architectures, and more. It does some of the same
tasks as up2date and AutoUpdate.

Friday, August 23rd 2002 05:15
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: BANG! is a news CGI script written in Perl. It generates an HTML
file (news.txt) containing your news that can be included in your site via
SSI #include directives.
Changes: This version adds a configuration menu to BANG! itself, and now
users who are just upgrading don't need mpwd.cgi. The ability to display
what time a news post was made has been added, as has the ability for
visitors to view news archives (this can be disabled). The internal layout
of the news database has changed, so upgrading users will need to go to
the configuration menu and select "Update database" before posting,
editing, or deleting news, or risk corrupting their news database.

Friday, August 23rd 2002 17:54
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: FIAIF is an Intelligent Firewall. It provides a highly customizable
script for setting up an iptables-based firewall. Configuration is done
through one configuration file for each network to which the firewall is
connected. FIAIF supports masquerading, port forwarding, traffic shaping,
and more.
Changes: A bug in SNAT rules when specifying the source address was fixed,
and if no ports are specified, SNAT now uses ip_local_port_range if
available. LOG_LIMIT, LOG_BURST, and TOS_FILE can now be left empty to
avoid using the LOG/TOS targets. Enabling the DHCP_SERVER parameter should
now work as expected. The scripts have also been updated to work with

Text Processing
About: GNU Aspell is a spell checker designed to eventually replace
ispell. It can either be used as a library or as an independent spell
checker. Its main feature is that it does a much better job of coming up
with possible suggestions than just about any other spell checker out
there for the English language. It also uses shared memory for
dictionaries and intelligently handles personal dictionaries when more
than one Aspell process is open at once.
Changes: This release of Aspell is the first version of Aspell as an
official GNU Package. It is a combination of the original Aspell and
Pspell which should be as least as stable as the original Aspell/Pspell
combination. The source code has been completely reorganized in the
process of the merge which should make it significantly easier for others
to maintain. From an end-users stand point GNU Aspell has several small
yet significant enhancements over the original Aspell including an
improved spell checking and an enhanced command line interface.

as IP and SSL connectivity along side SQL database support. Designed in C,
conforming to POSIX standards, and utilizing light weight processes
(threads), this product is able to handle a large number of transactions
with high speed and minimal CPU usage.
Changes: A deadlock in the SQL code has been found and fixed. An update
was made to the VITAL specification to maintain interchange compliance.

[031] - MIMEDefang 2.19
by David F. Skoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/dskoll/)
Friday, August 23rd 2002 17:49
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security
About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. However, it can do many other kinds of mail
processing, such as replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding
boilerplate disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts
of a MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can
also bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11/8.12's new "Milter" API, which makes it more flexible and
efficient than procmail-based approaches.
Changes: The quarantine notification message was improved. Some less
important syslog messages were lowered from 'info' to 'debug'. Perl
warnings about uninitialized variables were fixed. The default permissions
on /etc/mail/mimedefang-ip-key were tightened.

[032] - Monolith 0.8.0
by Richard Jones (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwmj/)
Friday, August 23rd 2002 10:51
Software Development
About: Monolith is a framework for writing monolithic CGI applications in
a style which most programmers will find quite natural. Monolith provides
basic classes for labels, buttons, images, tables, trees, and so on. From
these the programmer may construct pages and reusable super-widgets which
may be embedded (even multiple times) in Web pages. Monolith does not
require the programmer to understand the low level mechanics of CGI
scripts (scripts, parameters and so on). Instead, writing a Monolith
application is much more like writing a program with Java JFC, Motif, or
Windows MFC.
Changes: This version is a major rewrite to integrate with pthrlib and the
rws Web server.

Friday, August 23rd 2002 17:53
Other/Nonlisted Topic
About: txt2tags is a format conversion tool written in Python that
generates HTML, SGML, man page, MoinMoin, Magic Point, and PageMaker
documents from a plain text file with little marks. Different from other
conversion tools, it is generic, and not target-specific (as a txt2html
tool). This way, you can keep just one source text file and one tool for
all your formatting needs.
Changes: This release is a 100% pure Python script. The bash part is gone,
so now it runs nicely on MS Windows and other Python aware platforms.
There are new --toc and --toconly options to generate Table Of Contents,
and .t2t is defined as the oficial txt2tags file extension. The txt.vim
file was renamed to txt2tags.vim, and the tarball was reorganized. There
are some improvements in the TXT target appearance. Now the command line
used to generate the document is inserted as a comment on it.
