    Linux Cluster Architecture
    by Rajarshi Guha (http://jijo.cjb.net/)
    Section: Book Reviews
    Saturday, August 24th 2002 00:00

I've been using Beowulfs for a while now and have seen a number of
tutorials, articles, and books on how to go about building a Beowulf
cluster or writing programs for a Beowulf cluster. However, when it comes
to job scheduling or cluster monitoring, the topic is usually relegated to
a small paragraph (or even a few lines) mentioning that using a job
scheduling package such as PBS makes one's life easier. I can say from
experience that such a statement is very true, but I haven't seen many
mainstream articles on implementing a job scheduler or methods and
techniques for measuring cluster performance. If you've ever been
interested in the implementation of a job scheduling and performance
measuring system, "Linux Cluster Architecture" by Alex Vrenios is just
what you (and I) have been looking for.

About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious
text. This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text
that must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.

Changes: Some of the configuration was reworked to facilitate
incorporating the libopts tear-off source library into client projects.

About: AutoOpts is an integrated part of AutoGen. Based on a very simple
option description file, it will process configuration files, environment
variables, command line options, text strings passed by client programs,
and will make the results easily accessible to the client program. It will
also produce a man page and the info-doc invoking section automatically.

Changes: The client project integration facilities have been massively
improved, and can be accomplished in about 10 lines of code in three
files. There is now a separately downloadable example project.

    [007] - BINS photo album 1.1.15
      by Jérôme SAUTRET (http://freshmeat.net/users/zubro/)
      Saturday, August 24th 2002 12:44

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP
    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: BINS is a valid HTML 4 photo album generator with support for
internationalization, EXIF, and customizable charset encoding, including
UTF-8 (Unicode). Albums can contains other sub-albums. The appearance of
the album can be fully personalized by using template and configuration
parameters. The number and size of scaled pictures can be chosen in pixels
or percentage of the original image. Several description fields (date,
location, etc.) can be associated with the pictures, and you can add
additional description fields. A command line utility or a GTK+ GUI can be
used to set or edit description fields. BINS can use the EXIF data
structure found in some pictures to automatically fill some fields (most
notably, date and time) and to produce a page providing all information
available on the picture, as well as the DigiCam settings when the photo
was taken. All image meta-data are stored in XML files.

Changes: A new parameter linkInsteadOfCopy has been added to create a link
to the image in the destination directory instead of copying it, when
possible. A bug that crashed bins with Perl 5.8.0 has been corrected.
Movie files are now linked in albums. The scale method can now be chosen
with the new scaleMethod parameter. Rotation can now be skipped on some
files with the new noRotation parameter. A bad behavior that occurred when
scaled sizes uses mixed pixels and percentages has been corrected.
jpegtran can now be used with image names containing spaces. Some other
    corrections have been made.

    [008] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.147 (Stable)
      by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
      Saturday, August 24th 2002 06:11

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

Changes: Added a smtp_bounce option, which sends just the original headers
and is nicer for Sendmail. PostgreSQL support was started, and subject and
header checking is now fully regex aware. A problem with MySQL
configuration on the first run when there was no local config was fixed.
Postfix setup sections were improved. Good and bad email lists can now
just have a 'username'. The Exec Report was fixed for complex scoring. A
new program, 'spamcomplain' reports spam to ISPs. Virus Bounce messages
are customizable, and the default format was improved.

    its own Web server.

Changes: In the Wiki formatter, text between asterisks is now shown in

About: incident.pl is a small script that, when given syslogs generated by
snort or other tools, can generate an incident report for events that
appear to be attempted security attacks, gather information on the remote
host, and report the attack to the appropriate administrators.

Changes: When showing an excerpt of logs, the number of matching lines is
now shown to show severance of attack. A bug was also fixed that would
consider certain FQDNs erroneously as IPs.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: NSA Security-enhanced Linux is a set of patches to the Linux kernel
and some utilities to incorporate a strong, flexible mandatory access
control architecture into the major subsystems of the kernel. It provides
a mechanism to enforce the separation of information based on
confidentiality and integrity requirements, which allows threats of
tampering and bypassing of application security mechanisms to be addressed
and enables the confinement of damage that can be caused by malicious or
flawed applications. It includes a set of sample security policy
configuration files designed to meet common, general-purpose security
    goals.

Changes: The base kernel versions were updated to 2.4.19 and 2.5.31. The
SELinux peer SID functionality was re-implemented with new sock hooks; the
accept_secure call should now be reliable. The sysctl hook and /proc/sys
labeling were made configurable. Other minor enhancements were made

    [056] - uClinux 2.4.19-uc0 (2.4.x)
      by David McCullough (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidmc/)
      Saturday, August 24th 2002 12:55

About: uClinux is a set of patches for Linux that supports MMUless

that would otherwise run less advanced, simpler operating systems.

to the lack of MMU (Memory Management Unit), and in terms of code size
and efficiency it has an advantage over standard Linux.

Changes: An upgrade from 2.4.17 to 2.4.19.
