    Software Development :: Quality Assurance
    Software Development :: Testing

About: Abbot is a framework for testing Java GUIs. Using simple XML-based
scripts or Java code, you can launch a GUI, play back arbitrary user
actions on it, and examine its state. It also includes the Costello editor
which facilitates creating, debugging, and modifying scripts. The editor
supports recording arbitrary user semantic actions into a script,
exploring the component hierarchy, running the script, and other features
you'd expect from a script editor. Test scripts may be run as a JUnit
    TestCase.

Changes: The dynamic class loader is significantly improved. Support for
several more components has been added. Class path handling has been
greatly simplified for running both the examples and the editor. Abbot's
better 'bot, abbot.tester.Robot, is now separate from the component
testers. Many class loading bugs have been fixed, and speed has improved
    substantially.

About: Article Manager is a fully featured Web content management system
that makes it easy for non- technical users to easily update and manage
articles, news stories, headlines, and editorials. It includes the
following features: supports multiple users with different access levels
(Administrators, Editors, Trusted Writers, and Writers), uploads up to
10 images per article, password protected login screen, advanced setup
options to make it easy to customize the program, a powerful search
engine, a customizable database, the ability to customize the HTML
    templates, and much more.

Changes: The WYSIWYG editor has been updated to be much faster. A "sort by

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
proposed diff in plain text mode, coloured-diff mode, and can also view
the original and new files that comprise the review in their entirety when
Codestriker is linked with CVS. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

Changes: When a topic state is updated, a confirmation message is
displayed at the top of the view topic screen. If an uploaded file doesn't
exist, an appropriate error message is output. The table of contents
display was fixed for the case when a binary file is present, as text
files after a binary file weren't hyperlinked.

About: Geolizer is a patch for Webalizer to generate faster and more
reliable geographic statistics than using the default DNS suffix method.
It uses the GeoIP library. If you disable DNS reverse lookups on your HTTP
server, it will work faster and your stats will be more accurate when
    processed by a patched Webalizer.

Changes: Problems with "path relativity" were fixed. GeoIP_open is now
verbose. Binaries are stripped by default. The case for "configure"
options --with-geoip-xxx was fixed. No more ETCDIR on Win32 build. The
"fast" buggy tolower() was removed from the GeoIP suffix normalizer.
"configure" now seeks for GeoIP first in the user-specified --prefix. In
debug+GeoIP mode, helpful strings (address, 2-letter code, country) are
now printed. A fault that caused warnings on MinGW when compiling

    [030] - GTK+-DirectFB 2.0.6
      by Sven Neumann (http://freshmeat.net/users/BigSven/)
      Monday, August 26th 2002 10:14

    Software Development :: Embedded Systems

About: GTK+-DirectFB is a backend for GDK, the drawing kit used by GTK+.
Since DirectFB provides drawing functions, a windowing stack, and manages
input devices, this is a lightweight GDK port. GTK+-DirectFB is based on
GTK+-2.0 and implements the drawing functionality encapsulated in GDK. It
allows you to run standard GTK+-2.0 applications on the Linux framebuffer.
Due to the use of DirectFB, graphic operations are hardware accelerated if
a suitable DirectFB gfx driver is available. Since DirectFB is a very thin
library, the memory footprint of GTK+-DirectFB is relatively small.

Changes: This release adds support for XOR drawing, more visuals, and
preliminary colormap handling. It also fixes some bugs and memory leaks.

About: JavaGroups is a Java package for reliable group communication. It
consists of 3 parts: The first part is a socket-like API for application

    Security
    Utilities

About: keychain helps you to manage RSA and DSA keys in a convenient and
secure manner. It acts as a frontend to SSH-agent, but allows you to
easily have one long running SSH-agent process per system, rather than
the norm of one SSH-agent per login session. This dramatically reduces
the number of times you need to enter your passphrase - with keychain,
you only need to enter a passphrase once every time your local machine is
rebooted. keychain also makes it easy for remote cron jobs to securely
"hook in" to a long running SSH-agent process, allowing your scripts to
take advantage of RSA and DSA keys.

About: Moodle is a course management system for producing Internet-based
courses for distance education. It is written in PHP and has been tested
on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. It offers a Free alternative to
commercial software such as WebCT and Blackboard. Moodle has been designed
to support modern pedagogies based on social constructionist theory, and
is easy to install and use.

Changes: Fixes were made to improve installation on a wider variety of PHP
environments. Handling of embedded HTML in posts is now cleaner. A
graphical display of logged IPs (on a map of the Earth) was implemented.
The display of busy forums was improved. User settings to hide email
addresses were added. Formatting on Netscape 4 was improved. The
documentation was updated. A variety of interface clean-ups were made.

About: MT2 Thumbnailer (Make Thumbnails 2) is another program for
generating HTML photo albums from pictures. It gives users a great deal of
control over the comments shown alongside each picture, and the way the
pictures are ordered and grouped. Having descriptions, reflections, quips,
and quotes in a picture album makes it much more memorable and fun to

      by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
      Monday, August 26th 2002 03:03

    Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 15, which contains 6,220 foods.
This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats, calories,
protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes special information on
the essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels
are expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of
food labeling in the United States, but also can be fully customized.

Changes: This release makes "personal options" lock in so they cannot be
changed from the analysis screens, makes "food suggestions" stop after 19
foods, fixes a bug where recording a meal with no foods caused "rank foods
per recorded meals" to report "there are no meals in database", changes
"Est plipid Omega-6" field name to "Omega-3/6 Balance", and reformats the
field value as two numbers that add up to 100%.

About: OpenThought is a powerful and flexible Web application environment.
OpenThought applications are different from other Web applications in that
all communication between the browser and the server is performed in the
background. This gives a browser the ability to receive data from the
server without ever reloading the currently loaded document. Data received
can be displayed automatically on the existing page, can access JavaScript
functions and variables, and can load new pages. Additionally, OpenThought
completely manages all of your session data for you. These features give
the look and feel of a full-blown application instead of just an ordinary
    Web page.

Changes: There are major improvements to the documentation and
installation instructions. The default installation now conforms to the
FHS 2.2. The config file format has been changed from XML to Apache style.
The XML2Hash module has been moved to a separate package. A number of new

    [071] - Seminole Webserver 2.15 (Stable)
      by Mark Grosberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/myg/)
      Monday, August 26th 2002 07:35

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
    Scientific/Engineering

About: Seminole Webserver is a portable Web server designed to be used in
embedded systems, where memory space is at a premium. It is written in
C++, and has a mechanism to direct requests to application-specific code,
complete with the decoding of "CGI" parameters. It also includes a
"filesystem" that can package up Web content (and optionally compress it)
and store it in a ROM or other "flat" device. It comes with a simple
example to make it a standalone Webserver under POSIX platforms for
    evaluation and testing.

Changes: The most interesting addition to this release is (optional)
thread pooling. Thread pooling keeps free threads around ready to handle
incoming requests. This should reduce the latency of incoming on certain
systems. Conditional inclusion of content is now possible through a C-like
preprocessor mechanism. Also, a bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer has
been worked-around (as best as possible -- the bug is exhibited with
    Apache too in certain circumstances).

      Monday, August 26th 2002 09:55

    Games/Entertainment

About: Six plays Hex, a game with very simple rules and deep tactical
complexity. Two players, one with black and one with white pieces,
alternate placing marks on a rhombic board of hexagonal cells. Black's
goal is to connect the two opposite black sides of the board with black
pieces. White's goal is to connect the white sides of the board with white
    pieces.

Changes: Six no longer swaps when the move was made next to the right or
bottom edge. The remaining changes are mostly cosmetic. The move history
on the status bar and the board itself now display the same numbers. After
loading a finished game, the winning path is flashed instead of the last

About: SAM is a real-time Snort alert monitor. It provides many ways to
indicate that you may be experiencing an intrusion attempt on your
network, including audio/visual warnings, email warnings, etc.

Changes: This is a highly recommended upgrade. It has many enhancements,
including a new right click menu that allows you to see the fully
qualified domain name of both the source and destination of alerts. It
also includes many speedups and a new progress bar to provide feedback on
    database queries.

    System :: Monitoring

About: socket_wrappers is an improved version of tcp_wrappers. The
improvements include changing from K&R to ANSI C, removing unneeded
compatibility libraries, separation of the public and private API,
prepending tcpd_ to all private functions and data to prevent name
collisions, updates to signal handlers so that the application's handlers
aren't tampered with, dropping supplemental groups, and some build and man

      Monday, August 26th 2002 03:08

    Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The spasm anti-spam milter is a spam filter for sendmail 8.12+
(with libmilter support). Current features include logging of rejected
spam, fully virtualised settings for domains, individual whitelists, and
over two dozen blacklist filters which can be set individually on a
per-domain or per-email address basis (including local blacklist, rDNS
resolution, HELO/EHLO verification, envelope sender address verification,
numerous DNS-based lists, whitelist-only mode, tagging-only mode, and
    auto-blacklisting features).

    Changes: This release adds a search_regex function, a search_regex_bl
function (for SF_LOCALFILTER), aliases lookup in user_lookup(), and a
user_lookup() call to mlfi_envrcpt(). It no longer rejects on initial
MAX_UNKNOWN_USERS threshold; the IP is only added upon hitting the
threshold, and will be rejected during SF_MAX_UNKNOWN_USERS call on a
per-filter basis. It also fixes a problem with exiting spasmbl.

that it also allows you to apply security to these objects using a fairly
simple but powerful scheme of users and groups. It's also unique in that
for most objects, you will not need to write any code. All you need is a

    [078] - SQLite 2.7.0
      by D. Richard Hipp (http://freshmeat.net/users/drh/)
      Monday, August 26th 2002 10:05

    Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: SQLite is a C library that implements an SQL database engine. A
large subset of SQL92 is supported. A complete database is stored in a
single disk file. The API is designed for convenience and ease of use.
Applications that link against SQLite can enjoy the power and flexiblity
of an SQL database without the administrative hassles of supporting a
separate database server. Because it omits the client-server interaction
overhead and writes directly to disk, SQLite is also faster than the big
database servers for most operations. In addition to the C library, the
SQLite distribution includes a command-line tool for interacting with
SQLite databases and SQLite bindings for Tcl/Tk.

Changes: For purposes of sorting and comparison, SQLite now distinguishes
    between text and numeric datatypes.

Changes: This release includes the ability to switch the value column off
for clicks and/or orders in configuration. The default sorting was changed
to descending, database statistics were added, database clean up
functionality was added, and the "product" parameter was extended for
tracker.cgi. There are now products and sites modes in products report,

    Text Editors

About: The goal of the XMLtype project is to create a console-based editor
of XML document-oriented files in UTF-8 encoding. It is designed from the
beginning for multilingual use, even for writing bi-directional texts
(e.g. mixed English and Hebrew). The design focuses on comfortable and
fast typing of well-formed XML documents. Thus XMLtype is not meant to
compete with advanced console editors like Emacs or VIM. For full
functionality, XMLtype requires UTF-8 console support. It is being
developed under Linux and for the ANSI/VT-100 terminal.

Changes: This release includes contextual element-completing,
