    [001] - Alfandega Firewall 1.0 (Stable)
      by Christian Tosta (http://freshmeat.net/users/tosta/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 04:34

    System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Alfandega Firewall is a collection of Perl modules that helps users
to implement iptables-based firewalls for two interfaces. It provides
local and remote blacklists, spoofing checks, packet forwarding, ICMP
    control, service configuration, and more.

Changes: The scripts were rewritten using Perl, and support for port
forwarding and redirections were added, along with local or remote
blacklisting for hosts and networks. The dependence on dialog and Xdialog
was removed, and the config file format has been redesigned.

    Communications
Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
    Communications :: Chat :: ICQ

About: centericq is a text mode menu- and window-driven IM interface that
supports the ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, MSN, and IRC protocols. It allows you
to send, receive, and forward messages, URLs, SMSes (both through the ICQ
server and email gateways supported by Mirabilis), contacts, and email
express messages, and it has many other useful features.

Changes: This release adds some bugfixes in the AIM part; the weird
connecting problems are gone. Removing contacts from the AIM list was
fixed (they sometimes didn't want to go away). The commandline parameter
"--version" has been added. The --number commandline parameter has been
added so that it's now possible to send SMSes to mobile phones. If ICQ
login information is specified, centericq now allows sending SMSes to
contacts of any type over the ICQ network. The contact list
synchronization feature was improved, and several interface-related issues
    were fixed.

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: DiaSCE is a C/C++ code editor for GNOME. It pretends to be a
complement to Glade, so it doesn't include an environment for GUI's
development. It has neither a debugger or other kind of tool to help
debugging. Its goal is to provide a light code editor that doesn't need
too many resources and makes use of external tools (gcc, glade, ddd, etc.)
    for some tasks.

Changes: A port to GNOME 2, Gtk 2, Glade 2, and a migration from Libxml1
to Libxml2 was made. Bugs were fixed in project creation, function
showing, and when ctags could not be found. The focus has been fixed in
the search window. An option to load a project from the command line has
been added. Menu items have been disabled when helper applications were
not found. The user manual has been updated.

    other features for powerful downloading.

Changes: The number of supported FTP-search engines has been greatly
increased. The ability to recode filenames from CP1251 to KOI8 with one
click was added. FTP-search only searches. Alternates can be calculated

    [013] - Email address validation component 2002.08.12
      by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 04:32

    Internet

About: This is a PHP class that attempts to validate a given e-mail
address at three levels: matching the address against a RFC compliant
regular expression, verifing the existence of the destination SMTP server
by verifying the respective DNS MX record, and connecting to that server
to see if the given address is accepted as a valid recipient. The class
also features a debugging output option that lets you see the remote SMTP
server connection and data exchange dialog to see the real cause why an
apparently valid address may not be accepting messages.

Changes: SMTP host address resolution was split from connection. DNS
lookups for MX addresses are now validated by comparing them to the
exclude address if it's defined. The name of the GetMXRR function is now
an option so that it can be replaced, and an example of doing this was
provided. The e-mail validation regular expression was changed to allow
    .museum addresses.

About: Height Map Editor edits, generates, and manipulates terrain height
maps. These can be used in terrain renderers, which are used in games,
    applications, and demos.

Changes: A "Global Replace" tool has been added that works exactly like
the magic wand, the only exception being the fact that instead of
changing only the neighbour heights that match the tolerance factor, it
changes all the heights that match the tolerance factor, on the entire
map. So now you can do things like increase all the heights on the map
    between 0 and 15, with 20 pixels.

      by Torgny Johansson (http://freshmeat.net/users/torgny/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 13:03

    Communications :: File Sharing

About: JSmbGet enables you to browse and download files from SMB networks
other than your own local one. It consists of two parts, a server and a
client. The server is installed on a machine on the remote network you
want to be able to browse. It is useful when, for example, you have a LAN
at home or at work with one computer acting as a gateway and the only
visible computer for computers outside of the LAN is the gateway. With the
JSmbGet server running on the gateway, you can access all of the SMB
shares within the LAN from wherever you wish, using the JSmbGet client.

Changes: This is to be considered a preview release to get fast feedback
on the Graphical User Interface introduced in this version. The GUI is not
very functional yet, but basic operations are supported. Some new features
have also been added to the text-based client, like tha ability to

features user- definable headers and body parts, MIME encoding of text and
HTML body parts with user-defined character encoding using
quote-printable, support for attachments with automatic content type
detection, support for multipart/alternative and multipart/related
messages (for HTML messages with embedded images), encoding of message

of the error delivery address setting the Return-Path header, and several
sub-classes for sending messages by different methods: PHP mail()
    function, sendmail, qmail, SMTP.

Changes: Fixed a problem where additional space before the return path
sendmail argument was preventing postfix sendmail emulation from accept
messages with the return-path header. A problem with reading binary files
for attachments under Windows was fixed, along with detection of the

      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 13:46

    Software Development

About: Monolith is a framework for writing monolithic CGI applications in
a style which most programmers will find quite natural. Monolith provides
basic classes for labels, buttons, images, tables, trees, and so on. From
these the programmer may construct pages and reusable super-widgets which
may be embedded (even multiple times) in Web pages. Monolith does not
require the programmer to understand the low level mechanics of CGI
scripts (scripts, parameters and so on). Instead, writing a Monolith
application is much more like writing a program with Java JFC, Motif, or
    Windows MFC.

      by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 16:48

About: OpenPKG is a flexible and powerful software packaging facility that
eases installation and administration of Unix software across several
platforms. Consolidating different vendor approaches into a unified
architecture, it assists in administration of large networks previously
complicated by nonconformant systems. It uses RPM to provide an additional
system layer on top of the operating system. It is fully self-contained
(no RPM pre-installation is required), installs itself by means of a
tricky bootstrapping procedure with minimal operating system intrusion,
    and supports multiple installation instances.

Changes: The number of packages has been increased to 274. CORE, BASE,
and PLUS package categories have been introduced. This release officially
    supports FreeBSD 4, RedHat Linux 7, Debian GNU/Linux 2, Debian GNU/Linux
3, Sun Solaris 8 and Sun Solaris 9. There are additional user/groups to
better abstract security-sensitive code from generic functionality, a
"sane" build environment for really reproducable package building
results, no more alteration of system files in regular packages (only
done in bootstrap procedure), full support for enabling/disabling of

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: phpTest is a Web-based testing program. It provides an environment
to take multiple choice or true/false quizzes. An administrator can add
any number of questions, tests, users, and groups. Once a test is created,
a user can log in to take the test, and his test results are scored
automatically and stored in the database for easy viewing. It also
includes a few features designed to prevent cheating, such as
    randomization of questions.

Changes: This release works with register_globals turned off. It also
works fine with error reporting set to E_ALL. Test questions can now be
set to HTML or plain text on a per question basis. Multi-line questions
and answers are now supported. A bug has been fixed that prevented
cookies from being set with Mozilla. Much of the code has been rewritten

      by ahu (http://freshmeat.net/users/ahu2/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 11:57

    Internet

About: PowerMail is a redundant and distributed system for receiving mail
via SMTP and storing it for users to access with POP. The way PowerMail
works is quite unorthodox, and its design emphasizes speed and efficiency.
Modified Maildir mailboxes allow PowerMail to employ hardlinks to save
diskspace and deliver messages with thousands of recipients instantly.
PowerMail can operate self-sufficiently or cooperate with a regular MTA to
    support mail forwarding.

Changes: Two RFC violations in the POP implementation which could lead to
slow operation with some clients were fixed. Furthermore, some optional
POP features have been implemented, which will allow some clients to
operate better. Netscape Mail now draws a progress bar while downloading
large messages. Logging was improved slightly.

detects extensions supported by the SMTP server, and takes advantage of
the SMTP PIPELINING extension to buffer SMTP commands, providing much
faster queueing of messages when delivering to a large number of
    recipients (bulk mail).

Changes: Options for setting the exclude address were added, and SMTP host

    Games/Entertainment

About: TuxTyping is an educational typing tutorial game starring Tux, the
Linux Penguin. The player guides Tux to eat fish which are falling from
the top of the screen. Each fish has a letter or a word written on it.
When the player presses the corresponding key, or types the appropriate
word, Tux will position himself to eat the fish. The game is intended for
children learning to type and to spell, though it does have higher
difficulty levels which even experienced typists may find challenging.

Changes: A new Smoothscroller patch greatly reduces memory usage. A word

      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 16:54

    Software Development :: Testing

About: Valgrind is a tool that helps you find memory management problems
in programs. When a program is run under Valgrind's supervision, all reads
and writes of memory are checked, and calls to malloc/new/free/delete are
intercepted. As a result, Valgrind can detect problems such as use of
uninitialized memory, reading/writing of memory after it has been freed,
reading/writing off the end of malloced blocks, reading/writing
inappropriate areas on the stack, memory leaks in which pointers to
malloced blocks are lost forever, passing of uninitialized and/or
unaddressable memory to system calls, and mismatched use of malloc/new/new
    [] vs. free/delete/delete [].

    [078] - Vstr string library 0.9.12
      by Nevyn (http://freshmeat.net/users/nevyn/)
      Wednesday, August 28th 2002 00:07

    Software Development :: Libraries

About: Vstr is a string library designed for network communication, but
applicable in a number of other areas. It works on the idea of separate
nodes of information, and works on the length/ptr model and not the
termination model a la "C strings". It can also do automatic referencing
for mmap() areas of memory, and includes a portable version of a
    printf-like function.

Changes: Custom format specifiers can now be given for vstr_add_vfmt(),
the printf() API. Examples are included for how to make this GCC warning
compatible. A couple of new APIs were added, and the library can now be
    compiled against dietlibc.

    [079] - WebGUI 4.6.5

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
    Office/Business

About: WebGUI is a platform built to allow average business users to build
and maintain complex Web sites. It is modular, pluggable, and platform
independent. It was designed to allow the people who create the content to
manage it online, rather than content management taking up the time of
busy IT Staff. Whether you are building a consumer site, an intranet, or
an extranet, WebGUI has something to offer.

Changes: Content Managers can no longer view pages in the "Manage Page
Tree" if they cannot edit them. A bug where USS submitters could not edit
their own submissions was fixed. Due to popular demand, the wobject table
was changed to include 5 user definable fields so that external data can
be married with WebGUI wobject data. An upgrade bug was fixed, and more
debug information is provided when macros fail to compile.

    System
    Utilities

About: ZIPTool is a set of tools for controlling IOMega JAZ and ZIP
drives from Linux. It features locking and unlocking of media (with a
password), ejecting, spinning down drives, mounting, and unmounting.

Changes: The lock/unlock "post-realize" bug was fixed for Linux 2.2.5 and
newer. A spin down feature was added, which only works for some drives. A
bug that prevented non-root users from mounting and unmounting was fixed,
and memory leaks and segfaults in the mount routine were corrected.
Command line parsing of the device path has been fixed for some options.
