    [001] - Albatross 1.00
      by Dave Cole (http://freshmeat.net/users/davecole/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 09:11

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
    Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

    About: Albatross is a small and flexible toolkit for developing highly
    stateful Web applications. It provides browser-based sessions via
    automatically-generated hidden form fields, server side sessions via a
    session server or file-based session store, a powerful and extensible
    templating system which promotes separation of presentation and
    implementation for improved program maintainability, implicit handling for
    pagination of sequences and tree browsing, template macros to allow
    repeated HTML and special effects HTML to be defined in one location, and
    lookup tables to translate Python values to arbitrary template code.
    Applications can be deployed as either CGI programs or as mod_python
    module with minor changes to program mainline. Custom deployment can be
    achieved by developing your own Request class.

    Changes: Lots of minor changes assist development in this release. The
    largest addition is a new "ellipsis" mode for the tree iterator, a variant
    of lazy trees with nodes at shallower levels progressively collapsed into
    ellipses as the user opens deeper nodes. The user can reopen the collapsed
    nodes by selecting an ellipsis.

    [002] - auto-autofs 1.4
      by Peter Korf (http://freshmeat.net/users/niendo/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 06:52

    System :: Filesystems
    System :: Hardware

    About: auto-autofs is a Perl script which searches block- devices (via
    /proc) and disk partitions (via fdisk) and generates an automounter map.
    It can also work as an automounter program. It also generates an HTML file
    for easy access to the devices.

    Changes: In this version, some speed increases were made. A refresh button
    for the KDE Quickbrowser was added, and more filesystem labels are shown,
    along with other small changes.

      Thursday, August 29th 2002 16:25

    System :: Archiving :: Packaging
    System :: Systems Administration

    About: AutoUpdate is a Perl script which performs a task similar to Red
    Hat's up2date or autorpm. It can be used to automatically download and
    upgrade RPMs from different HTTP(S) or (S)FTP sites, while also handling
    dependencies. Moreover, it can also be used to keep a server with a
    customized (Red Hat) distribution plus all clients up to date.

      Thursday, August 29th 2002 14:14

    Security

    About: Beltane is a Web-based central management console for the samhain
    file integrity system. If samhain is used in a client/server setup,
    beltane enables the administrator to browse client reports, acknowledge
    them, and update file signature databases stored centrally on the log
    server.

    Changes: This release adds support for PostgreSQL. Encoded characters in
    filenames are handled correctly now, an undo option has been added, and
    plenty of bugs have been fixed.

    [005] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.152 (Stable)
      by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 21:16

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

    About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
    dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
    It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
    and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
    executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
    a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
    queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
    the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
    there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
    multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
    so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

    Changes: Virus and Spam bounces now should both use the [smtp_bounce]
    option when set to send the bounces using SMTP, and also qmail-queue and
    postfix content filter should be able to bounce using this now. Body
    checking was improved to catch spam much more often (it was bailing out on
    checking a line after a match, so that a line with multiple matches wasn't
    increasing the score enough). SMTP Bounces now only happen during Spam
    messages like normal, and the return address is now <> so they can't
    bounce back. A bug was also fixed in username matching for bad/good email
    checks.

    Software Development :: Interpreters

    About: Blassic is a classic Basic interpreter. The line numbers are
    mandatory, and it has PEEK & POKE. The main goal is to execute programs
    written in old interpreters, but it can be used as a scripting language.

    Changes: Several bug corrections, CINT and FIX functions, and preliminary

    [007] - Class::Date 1.1.1
      by dLux (Balázs Szabó) (http://freshmeat.net/users/dlux/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 00:36

    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: Class::Date provides a date datatype for Perl. You can create new
    Class::Date objects with a constructor from different scalar formats,
    array refs, and hash refs, and then you can easily manipulate it by the
    builtin "+" and "-" operators (e.g., $date=date([2001,03,15])+'3Y 1s').
    Relative date types also available.

    Changes: The "errstr" method is now documented, the timezone is fixed for
    Perl 5.8.0, and the missing "tzname" declaration is also fixed for Mac
    OS/X.

    [008] - Clover 1.0
      by Brendan Humphreys (http://freshmeat.net/users/brendanh/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 06:42

    About: Clover makes the gathering and analysis of code coverage metrics as
    painless as possible. The main features include tight integration with the
    popular Jakarta Ant build tool, accurate, configurable coverage recording.
    It gathers Method, Statement and Branch coverage data. Compile-time
    properties and source level directives allow for precise control over the
    coverage gathering process. It also allows the user to view coverage data
    in XML, HTML, or via a Swing GUI. Report-time options allow for the
    exclusion of particular statement types from coverage analysis.

    Changes: This version includes support for JDK1.4, color-syntax
    highlighted reports, context filtering, and many other improvements and
    bugfixes.

    About: Dovecot is an IMAP server whose major goals are security and
    extreme reliability. It tries very hard to handle all error conditions and
    verify that all data is valid, making it nearly impossible to crash. It
    should also be pretty fast, extensible, and portable. It currently

    Text Processing
    Utilities

    About: Enca detects the encoding of text files, on the basis of knowledge
    of their language. Then it can convert them to other encodings, allowing
    you to recode files without knowing their current encoding. It can
    currently detect encoding of Belarussian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovak,
    and Ukrainian texts, and a few Unicode variants, independently on
    language.

    Changes: In this version, the built-in converter works again, crashing on
    an unknown language is fixed, `-' is accepted for standard input, enca no
    longer tries to perform trivial conversions anymore, and some compile-time

    About: Gnarwl is an email autoreply tool like vacation(1). However,
    instead of requiring system accounts for every email address, it looks up
    its user information in an LDAP database. With gnarwl, users are no longer
    required to mess around with .forward files in order to use an email
    autoresponder.

    Changes: This release adds several bugfixes.

    [022] - Gnono 0.0.2 (alpha)
      by Dennis J Houy (http://freshmeat.net/users/djhouy/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 06:55

    Games/Entertainment

    About: Gnono is a card game for GNOME 1.x. This is a re-write for GNOME of
    the Windows card game WUNO, which was never released. It is loosely based
    on the card game UNO, and plays mostly by the same rules. It currently
    supports one human and one AI player.

    Changes: This release adds the option to continue game after round is
    finished and an info window to show which player starts. Some bugfixes
    include with the AI color selector, a clean up of usage of GNOME dialogs,
    a bug introduced by the above which caused the wrong starting player to be
    displayed, removal of some redundant code, the addition of a dialog to
    indicate that the game is over and who won, and reduces the playout score
    to 100 for easier testing. There is now an initial Dutch translation.

    About: GrabCartoons is yet another comic-grabbing utility. It is modular,
    and it is very easy to write modules for new comics. To avoid depriving
    the comic Web sites from their hits, grabcartoons does not download a copy
    of the images, but only generates a page with links to them.

    Changes: This release includes some minor bugfixes in the main program and
    some modules, a code cleanup in main program, and the addition of a -w

    About: Hep Messaging Server is software that transfers messages between
    different messaging systems. Eventually, it should transparently route
    messages between email, weblogs, and instant messaging. Currently Hep does
    one thing: fetches news feeds from Web sites and lets you view them in
    your email client.

    Changes: Mark Pilgrim's rssfinder module is now used to locate newsfeeds.
    This adds support for syndic8.com's RSS feed database, which means that
    Hep should be able to find newsfeeds for almost any Web site. Mark
    Pilgrim's rssparser module is now used for parsing RSS files, which allows
    for handling messed up RSS feeds, and gets rid of the dependency on
    Python's XML libraries. The ability to set up message destinations was
    added, for delivering messages to weblogs. An SMTP server was added for
    handling outgoing messages. An Inbox view was added to the HTTP server,
    for viewing messages in a browser.

    [029] - HTML::Template 2.6
      by Sam Tregar (http://freshmeat.net/users/sunking/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 21:01

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: The HTML::Template module attempts to make using HTML templates
    simple and natural. It extends standard HTML with a few new tags for
    variables, loops, if/else blocks and includes. A file written with HTML
    and these new tags is called a template. Using this module you fill in the
    values for the variables and loops declared in the template. This allows
    you to seperate design (the HTML) from the data, which you generate in the
    Perl script. While there are many other HTML template systems available,
    this module is simple and fast. It doesn't try to reinvent Perl CGI, it
    just augments HTML with a few new and very useful abilities.

    Changes: A new __counter__ variable for loop_context_vars, a new default
    attribute for tmpl_var tags, bugfixes, and documentation fixes.

    About: Jhead is a command line driven utility for extracting digital
    camera settings from the Exif format files used by many digital cameras.
    It handles the various confusing ways these can be expressed, and displays
    them as F-stop, shutter speed, etc. It is also able to reduce the size of
    digital camera JPEGs without loss of information, by deleting integral
    thumbnails that digital cameras put into the Exif header. If you need to
    add Exif support to a program, this is a simple program to cut and paste
    from. Many projects, including PHP, have reused code from this utility.

    Changes: This release uses an adjusted date instead of the original date
    when -ta is used in combination with the -ft or -n options, adds an image
    orientation display to the summary, changes the 35mm equivalent focal
    calculation to use 36mm instead of 35mm for 35mm negative widths (35mm
    negative frames are 36mm wide), splits jhead.c into jhead.c and jpgfile.c,

    About: Mainstreet Credit Verification Engine (MCVE) is a scalable Credit
    Card Processing Engine for Linux and UNIX. MCVE is designed to handle
    credit card authorizations and is certified to support major clearing

    [049] - mmmail suite 0.0.15
      by Matthew Mondor (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmondor/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 21:32

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
    Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

    About: mmmail provides SMTP and POP3 daemons using MySQL, running as a
    non-root user. It also supports bandwidth shaping. Relaying is not
    supported, although it has been designed to handle many users on many
    virtual hosts. It is fast and secure, uses threads, and has been written
    entirely from scratch and does not rely on mbox or Maildir formats.

    Changes: A fix for the bandwidth shaping library, which would no longer
    work because of a faulty zero initialization, and more verbose errors when
    receiving mail.

    [052] - Multi Gnome Terminal 1.6.0 (Stable)
      by Cristiano De Michele (http://freshmeat.net/users/demichel/)
      Thursday, August 29th 2002 21:19

    Desktop Environment :: Gnome
    Terminals
    Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

    About: Multi Gnome Terminal is an enhanced version of gnome-terminal, with
    many powerful new features and extensions. The most notable enhancement is
    the ability to run multiple terminals within the same window. Each
    terminal may be accessed by its "tab", through keyboard shortcuts, or menu
    selections. Inactive terminals provide an alert when the buffer changes by
    changing the color of the tab labels. Other enhancements include a
    toolbar, a buttonbar, flexible command options to launch new terminals,
    tabs, and shells from either the GUI or command line, customizable key
    bindings for MGT functions and other uses, font shadowing, the ability to
    "split" terminals so that each window can simultaneously multiple
    terminals, the ability to "view" or "bond" terminals with other terminals,
    and various other improvements.

    Changes: The main new feature for this release is that now each Tab can
    have its own settings for many things such as fonts, backgrounds, etc.
    Font handling has been improved, including support for pseudo-graphics
    characters (like xterm) and some support for proportional fonts. URL
    Handling now works with raw IP addresses, because mgt-helper script has
    been improved quite a lot. Several bugs have also been fixed.

    IPSec (X.509 certificates, preshared, RSA signature). You can use the
    firewall on a standard PC with 2 to 16 network cards (including Ethernet,
    ADSL, ISDN). It is very easy to install and administer. The Securepoint
    Security Manager is available in English, German, and Spanish, and works
    in online and offline mode.

    Changes: In this release, a script language is available for the server
    and client to add own options and services to the Securepoint Firewall and
    VPN server. A better handling of IPSec connections over an ADSL link is
    available and the patch update over HTTP now works.

    System :: Logging

    About: syslog-ng, as the name shows, is a syslogd replacement, but with
    new functionality for the new generation. The original syslogd allows
    messages only to be sorted based on priority/facility pairs; syslog-ng
    adds the possibility to filter based on message contents using regular

    Database
    Database :: Front-Ends
    Software Development :: Compilers

    About: Universal Embedded SQL Compiler (UESQLC) is a compiler that
    provides a common way for accessing heterogeneous databases. UESQLC is
    based on Structured Query Language (SQL) as a standard for accessing data.
    This interface provides maximum interoperability, i.e. a single
    application can access different SQL Database Management Systems (DBMS)
    through a common set of embedded SQL code (UESQL). This enables a
    developer to build and distribute a client/server application without
    targeting a specific DBMS.

    Changes: This version adds a new SQL data type (TIME) to the C++ library
    (uesql::TTime). The old Java classes 'TSqlstate' and 'TSqlstateDescriptor'
    have been merged into a single class called 'TState'.

    uses very little memory and bandwidth and will happily run in the
    background. It supports games such as Quake 1/2/3, Unreal, Jedi Knight 2,
    Half Life, and many more.

    Changes: This release changes Templates and qstat so they show how many

    Internet

    About: The Virtual Object System (VOS) is an infrastructure and collection
    of applications for building a multiuser object-oriented virtual reality
    for the Internet. An abstract messaging layer (the VOS core) provides a
    powerful abstraction, presenting a peer-to-peer distributed system as a
    single unified whole. The 3D client (Ter'Angreal) enables any number of
    users to interact in a virtual environment by communicating with one
    another and by modifying and building onto the virtual environment itself.
    This projects aims to realize the vision of a free 3D immersive Internet.

    Changes: This version fixes several crashing and hanging bugs in the 3D
    client and the VOS core, and makes a major change to network method names
    which causes this version to be incompatible with earlier versions. The
    test server and "virtual Web cam" are back up and running. There are some
