    [003] - Alist 0.3.2
      by paul farrall (http://freshmeat.net/users/pfarrall/)
      Friday, August 30th 2002 20:35

    System
    System :: Systems Administration

    About: Alist is a program that collects hardware and software information
    about systems and stores it in a database for users to browse and search
    via a Web interface. The program consists of three parts: a client portion
    that collects the information, a daemon that receives data sent from
    clients, and a CGI that displays and lets you search for information.
    Clients for Solaris, Linux, FreeBsd, OpenBSD, and Mac OS X are currently
    available.

    Changes: Bugfixes in Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and Darwin modules for
    interface info functions, fixes for some cases where the logfile might not
    be opened properly by daemon, some bugfixes to the alist client, and
    increased number of allowable characters in user-supplied data strings.

    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

    About: Animail is a multiserver POP3/APOP/IMAP4Rev1 (with or without SSL)
    mail retrieval utility. It features an advanced filtering system based on
    blacklisting, whitelisting, or a combination of both. It is possible to
    send an autoresponse which prompts people to reply and add themselves to
    the 'autoaccept' file. It also allows filters based on a regular
    expression which matches against the email headers. (If a message is
    filtered, only the header is downloaded, not the entire body.) Animail
    also features download ordering options. For example, you can configure it
    to download the smaller messages first. Different delivery options are
    available, including mailbox, maildir, local SMTP, and pipe to command.

    Changes: A fix for the evil IndexError bug in the config file parser, but
    still no support for M$ Exchange IMAP servers.

    About: Anna is a set of AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language)
    files that constitute a chat bot. Unlike other Chat Bots, Anna declares
    herself to be human, and then has a past, personality, and identity built
    up from there. Anna is designed to win the 2002 Loebner Prize Competition,
    and is based on the landmark work of the ALICE AI foundation.

    [006] - AppWrap 0.04
      by PlanetMan (http://freshmeat.net/users/PlanetMan/)
      Friday, August 30th 2002 11:08

    Database :: Front-Ends
    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
    Office/Business :: Groupware

    About: AppWrap is a self-organizing Web site using a Web GUI frontend to a
    backend database. It is intended for companies wanting to manage mildly
    dynamic data online without the labor of hand-coding and managing multiple
    CGI forms, or the expense of CRM systems. Users can input and edit data,
    view, sort and filter it onscreen, download it, chart it, calendar it, and
    track changes. Administrators can quickly add data tables to the site
    using a provided script; this script populates reasonable default values
    in the meta-data tables. After running the script admins can customize
    onscreen appearance by modifying the default values. All changes to
    onscreen appearance are made by changing values in the meta-data tables.

    Changes: The demo database was changed to better describe what is shown
    onscreen. This should help people understand how AppWrap works. Many
    documentation updates were made, some minor, some large. The "about
    AppWrap" POD was added, which essentially describes how AppWrap came to
    be. Modules were revised to take advantage of new CSS styles to go along
    with the revisions to the demo DB and the styles were added to the site
    stylesheet. Revisions were made to the admin script (AppWrap_admin.pl) to
    enhance modularity and supportability.

    import BMP, MJPEG, and MPEG video, and encode them. You can also process
    video with included filters. It requires divx4linux and GTK/GDK.

    Changes: Speedups were made to the deinterlacer (MMX). It is now possible
    to select the audio stream on Bivx. Better NUV file support was

    Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

    About: Blackbox is yet another addition to the list of window managers for
    X. It is written in C++, sharing no common code with any other window
    manager (even though the graphics implementation is similar to that of
    WindowMaker). It features small code size, a fast interface with simple
    menus, multiple workspaces, decorated windows, built-in graphics code to
    render solids, gradients, and bevels on the fly, and more.

    Changes: This release adds Taiwan Chinese (zh_TW), Hungarian (hu_HU),
    Korean (ko_KR), Norwegian (no_NO), Polish (pl_PL), Romanian (ro_RO), and
    Ukrainian (uk_UA) locale support. There are numerous speedups, improved

    [011] - Catacomb 0.6.0

      Friday, August 30th 2002 01:53

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP
    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

    About: Catacomb is a WebDAV repository module for use with the Apache
    WebDAV module, mod_dav. Apache mod_dav parses WebDAV protocol requests
    into operations on a repository providing persistent storage of resources
    and their properties. The default repository for mod_dav is provided by a
    separate module, mod_dav_fs, which stores resource bodies as files in the
    filesystem, and stores properties in a (G)DBM database. Catacomb provides
    a replacement for mod_dav_fs called mod_dav_repos that stores resources
    and their properties in a relational database (MySQL). The primary
    advantage of this approach is the searching capabilities of the database
    are used to implement the DASL protocol.

    Changes: Dead prop namespace support, a fix for a copy/move bug, support
    in the SEARCH method, and many bugfixes.

    About: The Cyrus IMAP server is generally intended to be run on sealed
    systems, where normal users are not permitted to log in. The mailbox
    database is stored in parts of the filesystem that are private to Cyrus.
    All user access to mail is through the IMAP, POP3, or KPOP protocols. The
    private mailbox database design gives the server large advantages in
    efficiency, scalability, and administratability. Multiple concurrent
    read/write connections to the same mailbox are permitted. The server
    supports access control lists on mailboxes and storage quotas on mailbox

    Software Development :: User Interfaces

    About: ERW (Entities and Relationships on the Web) is an innovative system
    for handling complex databases using a Web browser. It uses the most
    recent standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
    environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
    is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
    description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
    for entity-relationship schemata. ERW can be used for content management,
    in particular when the data is structured along complex relations.

    Changes: ERW now implements multiple ownership for weak entities. Several
    fixes have been made to the schema validating code. Finally, new hooks are
    available for deletions.

      Friday, August 30th 2002 20:33

    Desktop Environment :: Gnome
    Office/Business
    Office/Business :: Financial :: Spreadsheet

    About: The GNOME Structured File Library is a utility library for reading
    and writing structured file formats. Support for MS OLE2 streams is
    complete, as is zip import. There is also support for document metadata
    and some initial work on decompressing VBA streams in OLE files for future
    conversion to other languages. This library replaces libole2 and is used
    in gnumeric, mrproject, and eventually abiword.

    Changes: OLE export has now been validated for a while and is ready for
    general usage outside GNOME. This release patches some corner cases that
    upset the old libole2 importer. Generated files are now readable by all
    major OLE importers. The zip import is also firmed up and ready for

    Security
    Security :: Cryptography
    System :: Logging

    About: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that
    implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most
    forms of address space modification, confines programs with least
    privilege via its process-based ACL system, hardens syscalls, and provides
    many of the OpenBSD randomness features. It has auditing capabilities and
    a netfilter module designed to thwart portscans and OS fingerprinting.

    Changes: This release includes the new segmentation-based implementation
    of non-executable pages from the PaX team, which has all of the features
    of the previous page-based implementation, yet without the performance
    hit. The learning mode and new ACL features have been refined, and the ACL
    system has undergone a rewrite of the core code, which resulted in a 10x

      Friday, August 30th 2002 19:09

    About: HyperSCSI is a new storage protocol designed for the transfer of
    SCSI data and commands over networks. It runs on Ethernet-based networks,
    but does not use TCP/IP as a foundation for communications. While this may
    run counter to convention, it has allowed HyperSCSI to achieve high
    throughput without the need for complex and expensive hardware add-ons.
    Intrinsic advantages of bypassing TCP/IP include immunity to cracking via
    the Internet, simplicity, and plug-and-play functions. It supports IDE and

    configuration file, and is fully compatible with the HTTP 1.1 protocol
    including persistent proxy connections and chunked encoding. It can be
    used to block certain URLS, mimetypes, cookies, and HTTP headers, and can
    filter the content of Web pages using either its builtin rewrite feature
    or any external program or script.

    Changes: A severe bug which would cause the proxy to crash when visiting a
    site which doesn't return a content-type header while using the rewrite
    feature was fixed. Middleman can now accept normal HTTP requests on the
    proxy port and forward those connections if a matching redirect rule for
    the requested file is found. Rewrite rules can now be applied to both the
    header sent by the browser and the header received from the remote Web
    site. Redirect rules can now optionally be applied to the URL in the
    Location header sent back when a server gives a 302 redirect.

    About: mmftpd is a secure FTP server that runs as a normal user, and
    supports virtual users only. Each user may have specific permissions,
    including the maximum home directory size limit and download/upload
    speeds. The daemon uses libpth for portable threads instead of fork(). It
    runs on both BSD and Linux systems, and is ideal for a setup with many Web
    virtual host customers. It was written from scratch, with no borrowed
    code.

    Changes: Fixes for the bandwidth shaping library which would no longer
    work because of faulty zero initialization, fixes for some ABOR issues
    where control characters had to be ignored (the control connection is
    handled asynchronously), and various other minor fixes and enhancements.

    About: MyGnokii2 is manager for the Nokia 3210, 33xx, 3410, 3510, 51xx,
    5210, 5510, 61xx, 62xx, 63xx, 6510, 7110, 82xx, 8310, 9110, and 9210, and
    other (AT) cellular phones. It currently has a command line version with
    many functions for ringtones, phonebook, SMS, logos, WAP, date/time,
    alarm, calls, etc. It can also make full backups and restore them. It
    works on various Unix systems (like Linux) and Win32.

    Changes: Many improvements were made in the character coding functions
    (linked sms, reminders for 33xx, vcard and vcalendar sms, etc.). Setting
    ringtones with preview and playing tones were improved. Restoring WAP
    settings for DCT4 was added. Setting profiles for 6110 family was added.
    Saving SMS/SMSC for DCT4 works completely again. Protection against

    About: Network Query Tool (NQT) is a one-stop solution for getting
    information about a domain or IP address. Instead of manually using
    different Unix commands or visiting numerous Web sites to investigate a
    host, just load Network Query Tool and enter the hostname or IP. NQT does
    the rest.

    Changes: Starting with PHP 4.2.0, register_globals defaults to off. NQT

      by Edwin Hautus (http://freshmeat.net/users/ehautus/)
      Friday, August 30th 2002 09:10

    About: The Package Structure Analysis Tool is a tool for analyzing and
    refactoring the structure of Java programs. It takes Java sources as
    input and visualizes the dependencies between packages and classes with
    UML class diagrams, detects cycles in the dependency graph, recovers an
    intended architectural layering from a polluted implementation, suggests
    which dependencies should be removed to improve the structure, allows
    refactoring of the source model, immediately shows the effect of the
    refactoring on the dependency structure, allows the refactoring to be
    applied to the source code, and allows source code to be verified against
    a design model.

    Changes: Calculation of Robert C. Martin's Design Quality Metrics has been
    added. It is also now possible to use the tool via the command line or via
    Apache ANT. Furthermore, some improvements have been made to the user

    Scientific/Engineering

    About: PHP Weather makes it easy to show the current weather on your Web
    page. PHP Weather retrieves the latest METAR (weather) report and converts
    this format into both imperial and metric units, caches the data in a
    MySQL, PostgreSQL, or DBA database for fast retrieval, and makes it easily
    available in PHP scripts. You can display the data in several languages by
    using the included translations. You can also access the information with
    a WAP-enabled mobile phone.

    Changes: This is not an upgrade from earlier versions of PHP Weather, but
    a move to an entirely new code base. The biggest changes from previous
    versions of PHP Weather are the built-in list of available stations and
    the new object oriented design. The use of PHP4-only functions means that

    [062] - PowerMail 1.3.1
      by ahu (http://freshmeat.net/users/ahu2/)
      Friday, August 30th 2002 10:03

    Internet

    About: PowerMail is a redundant and distributed system for receiving mail
    via SMTP and storing it for users to access with POP. The way PowerMail
    works is quite unorthodox, and its design emphasizes speed and efficiency.
    Modified Maildir mailboxes allow PowerMail to employ hardlinks to save
    diskspace and deliver messages with thousands of recipients instantly.
    PowerMail can operate self-sufficiently or cooperate with a regular MTA to
    support mail forwarding.

    Changes: Previous versions of PowerMail neglected to close discarded MySQL
    connections, which under certain circumstances could lead to resource
    exhaustion. This situation can be triggered by spammers doing a dictionary

    compartmentalized, restricted, or published openly, as appropriate, all
    from the same system. Ideas are coherently threaded, and every message is
    searchable in a single location and in the context of the messages related
    to it.

    Changes: Changing the session timeout to 2 minutes from 1 minute (it was
    originally 5 minutes, which was too long), new "page shifting" for folders
    and search results that result in more than 20 pages of threads, a fix for

    About: Sfront compiles MPEG 4 Structured Audio (MP4-SA) bitstreams into
    efficient C programs that generate audio when executed. MP4-SA is a

    Macintosh platforms. Generated files are compatible with Excel 5, 95, 97,
    2000 and 2002, and with the Linux/Unix spreadsheet applications OpenOffice
    and Gnumeric.

    Changes: This release adds formula caching to speed up the writing of
    formulas. Several additional example programs, particularly in relation to
    merging, were added.

    [075] - storebackup 1.9.1
      by Heinz-Josef Claes (http://freshmeat.net/users/hjclaes/)
      Friday, August 30th 2002 13:39

    System :: Archiving :: Backup
    System :: Archiving :: Compression

    About: storebackup is a backup utility that stores files on other disks.
    It includes several optimizations that reduce the disk space needed and
    improve performance, and unifies the advantages of traditional full and
    incremental backups. It includes tools for analyzing backup data and
    restoring. Once archived, files are accessible by mounting filesystems
    (locally, or via Samba or NFS). It is easy to install and configure.

    Changes: Due to an error when generating the package, the performance
    advantage with option --onlyMD5Check did not happen. This is corrected,
    and there is also improved performance when copying small files. An
    incorrect licence file has been replaced.

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
    Software Development

    About: Tapestry is a rich, component-based object model for developing
    dynamic, robust, highly interactive Web applications. Applications are
    constructed in terms of Java objects, methods and properties, instead of
    URLs and query parameters. It builds and interprets all URLs, dispatching
    directly to application-specific "listener" methods. It includes complete
    source code, documentation, tutorials and a complete example J2EE
    application.

    Changes: Tapestry now uses the Object Graph Navigation Library, which
    allows more logic to be expressed in the component specification rather
    than in Java code. There is now a complete Component Reference as part of
    the documentation.

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

    About: The Tamber project is a componentized n-tier Web site engine that
    uses open languages such as XML and JavaScript. Content is stored in
    separate XML files, in databases, or other data objects. Business
    functions are carried out by JavaScript and ASP. Presentation is
    controlled by an XSL transformation, which allows for delivery over
    multiple channels such as HTML, WAP, and MHEG. Currently, Tamber can
    deliver to HTML and WAP, and contains modules that support e-commerce
    shopping carts, secure sign in, data access and conversion services, and
    advanced session management.

    Changes: There are more changes to AD_LIB. Some functions have been
    rewritten, and others have been completed. The only function outstanding
    is gen_email_body().
