    The world is filled with Free Software to do all kinds of jobs. From
    top-to-bottom, a typical GNU/Linux system provides a kernel, basic
    administration tools, servers, clients, a graphical substrate, and
    (finally) high-level graphical environments sitting atop it all. Graphics,
    sound, input, output, networking... you can find Free Software for all of
    these. Despite this power given to hackers, Free Software games are often
    considered to be of lesser quality, compared to those available in the
    non-Free software world. In this review, I'll look at the variety of Free
    Software games available today and whether Free gaming software deserves
    its reputation.

    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

    About: Animail is a multiserver POP3/APOP/IMAP4Rev1 (with or without SSL)
    mail retrieval utility. It features an advanced filtering system based on
    blacklisting, whitelisting, or a combination of both. It is possible to
    send an autoresponse which prompts people to reply and add themselves to
    the 'autoaccept' file. It also allows filters based on a regular
    expression which matches against the email headers. (If a message is
    filtered, only the header is downloaded, not the entire body.) Animail
    also features download ordering options. For example, you can configure it
    to download the smaller messages first. Different delivery options are
    available, including mailbox, maildir, local SMTP, and pipe to command.

    Changes: Fixes and tweaks were made.

    [006] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.153 (Stable)

    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

    About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
    dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
    It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access
    and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it
    executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use
    a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the
    queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using
    the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and
    there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to
    multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available
    so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

    Changes: Security fixes for qmail-qfilter mode, improvements to the
    general permissions on /var/spool/blackhole directory, new 'accumulative'
    and 'isolated' flags to match actions, and a fix for a bug with bounce
    message debug output.

    About: CVSGnome is a powerful script that manages GNOME CVS
    checkouts/updates and easily builds a GNOME 2 system on your partition
    without touching your existing system in any way. This script generates
    tar.bz2 balls of the checkout and updates them on the next build session.
    Another feature is the generation of a ~/.xinitrc file that you simply
    copy over and start your GNOME 2 session with. This script is meant for
    experts only who know what they are doing and why they are doing it.

    Changes: This version of CVSGnome contains a large number of tarball
    version updates, a couple of changes of the cvs module tags, parallel
    installation of automake 1.4-p6 and automake 1.6.3, a special LINGUAS
    option which allows the user to build and install only the language he/she
    wants without the need to have all of them installed, and changes to some

    System :: Software Distribution
    System :: Systems Administration

    About: Depot is a software management tool providing a simple, yet
    flexible, mechanism for maintaining third party and locally developed
    software in large heterogeneous computing environments. Depot integrates
    separately maintained software packages, known as collections, into a
    common directory hierarchy consisting of a union of all the collections.
    This common directory is defined as the software environment. A set of
    configuration options manages interactions and intersections between
    collections in the environment. Depot facilitates the introduction,
    update, and removal of collections in a software environment. Custom
    environments and complete test environments can be easily created for
    individual machines or for sets of machines. Collections with unexpected
    problems can be replaced with previous versions or simply removed.
    Individual collections or files can be moved from remote filesystems to
    the local disks of workstations without the worry that the files may
    become stale. All this is achieved with minimal wasted disk space and
    administrative overhead.

    Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

    About: Superficially, Dominoes on Acid is a solitaire variant of Dominoes
    with weird colorful tiles (and this view is enough to play the game). But
    on a deeper level it is a GUI for natural deduction. Every completed
    domino is equivalent to a proof of a tautology in classical propositional
    logic. The game can be played online as an applet or offline as an
    application. It is built on a simple isometric engine that can be used
    independent of the game.

    Changes: Alt-left button can now be used instead of the right mouse button
    to allow the game to be played with one-button mice. A missing paragraph
    was added to the manual that explains the restrictions that apply when

    Multimedia :: Graphics
    Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Digital Camera

    About: exiftags parses a JPEG file looking for Exif (Exchangeable Image
    File) data, formatting, and printing image properties. Digital cameras
    typically add Exif data to the image files they produce containing
    information about the camera and digitized image. exiftags includes
    support for some camera manufacturer-specific properties.

    Changes: This release compiles under Windows. Also, exiftags now prints
    warnings rather than exiting on pictures without metadata to ease handling
    multiple files.

    [021] - eXist 0.8.1
      by wolf (http://freshmeat.net/users/wolfgangm/)
      Saturday, August 31st 2002 16:10

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

    About: eXist is an XML database with pluggable storage backends and
    support for fulltext search. XML is stored in the internal, native XML-DB
    or in an external RDBMS. The search engine has been designed to provide
    fast XPath queries, using indexes for all element, text, and attribute
    nodes. eXist is lightweight and well-suited for large document
    collections. The server is accessible through easy-to-use HTTP and XML-RPC
    interfaces and supports the XML:DB API for Java programming.

    Changes: This is a maintenance release, which fixes some minor but
    annoying bugs found in 0.8. Several incompatibilities between the local
    and remote XML:DB drivers have been removed. Both drivers should now
    behave as expected. Additionally, a bug leading to damaged db files when
    inserting non-wellformed documents has been fixed and the
    collection()-function has been extended to select more than one collection
    in a query.

    Software Development :: Libraries
    System :: Filesystems

    About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
    all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed
    using C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each
    datum to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various data
    sources and expose them as contexts and to generate interesting EA.
    Current implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event updates
    using fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount a berkeley
    database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox (mount your
    mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

    Changes: Sped up iostreams considerably, and added support for using
    gnome-vfs2 for MIME type sniffing. XFS EA names are now checked each time,
    so that libferris can use new EAs created by other applications
    immediately. The "content" EA is now always present. A bug with

    Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

    About: Mindless Automaton lets you play collectable/trading card games

    network. The game is simply a virtual tabletop; it does not play against
    you or enforce the rules.

    Changes: This version allows you to view your sideboard and move cards to
    and from it (not supported by or against Apprentice). The usual collection
    of small bugfixes and minor enhancements was also made.

      Saturday, August 31st 2002 11:17

    Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

    About: open proxy scanning bot (formerly NeoBOPM) is a loadable module for
    the NeoStats IRC Services. It scans clients connecting to the IRC network
    for insecure proxies, and also looks up a DNS blacklist for previously
    registered insecure proxies. It caches the results of scans to increase
    perfomance, and with multiple bots, can be configured to load balancing.
    It currently supports Hybrid7, Unrealircd, and Ultimate, with support for
    other ircds planned.

    Changes: This version was completely rewritten from scatch, and has had a
    name change from neoBOPM to opsb. It features increased scanning
    performance due caching of results, exclusion lists, and improved socket
    handling code. There is more ircd support, including Hybrid7, Unreal, and

    [077] - SQLite 2.7.1
      by D. Richard Hipp (http://freshmeat.net/users/drh/)
      Saturday, August 31st 2002 17:34

    Database :: Database Engines/Servers

    About: SQLite is a C library that implements an SQL database engine. A
    large subset of SQL92 is supported. A complete database is stored in a
    single disk file. The API is designed for convenience and ease of use.
    Applications that link against SQLite can enjoy the power and flexiblity
    of an SQL database without the administrative hassles of supporting a
    separate database server. Because it omits the client-server interaction
    overhead and writes directly to disk, SQLite is also faster than the big
    database servers for most operations. In addition to the C library, the
    SQLite distribution includes a command-line tool for interacting with
    SQLite databases and SQLite bindings for Tcl/Tk.

    [080] - Stunnel 4.00

      Saturday, August 31st 2002 04:28

    Communications
    Internet :: Proxy Servers
    Security :: Cryptography

    About: The stunnel program is designed to work as an SSL encryption
    wrapper between remote client and local (inetd-startable) or remote
    server. It can be used to add SSL functionality to commonly used inetd
    daemons like POP2, POP3, and IMAP servers without any changes in the
    programs' code. It will negotiate an SSL connection using the OpenSSL or
    SSLeay libraries. It calls the underlying crypto libraries, so stunnel
    supports whatever cryptographic algorithms you compiled into your crypto
    package.

    Changes: Added the ability to listen on multiple ports, a new user
    interface (with a config file), a Win32 GUI, a native NT/2000/XP service,
    delayed DNS lookup, and many other new features and bugfixes.

    [081] - system call tracker 0.74

      Saturday, August 31st 2002 18:26

    System :: Networking
    System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

    About: The system call tracker is a Linux kernel module and supporting
    user space applications which allow interception of and possibly taking
    action upon system calls that match user-defined criteria.

    Changes: The major change in this release is the addition of support for
    over 100 system calls. It includes infrastructure support for 64 bit
    system call parameters, such as long long and loff_t. This release also
    fixes bugs in various areas. Most notable are the bugfixes to the syscall
    data file parser (which is used by sctrace and sct_config), and to sctrace
    and the logging mechanism. This release has been extensively tested on 2.4
    kernels. It should work on 2.5 kernels. It does not work on 2.2 kernels,
    due to technical difficulties.

    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: travtrack is a tool to help a Traveller referee keep track of
    essential data for a game. Already implemented are galaxies, sectors,
    subsectors, systems, stars, planets, belt and moons. Yet to be
    implemented are trade routes, ships, characters and all the rest. These
    will take some time, but should not be too complex. It currently uses the
     GURPS Traveller:First In rules for system generation, but a subproject
    is under way to add Classic Traveller generation and output. A guile
    interface to the data representation functions is provided. travlib is a
    collection of C routines that should make writing a Traveller application
    easier.

    Changes: Added child validation, so that planets can no longer have
    galaxies orbiting them.

    animation, realtime interaction and multimedia (image, movie, sound). Dune
    can read VRML97 files, display and let the user change the
    scenegraph/fields, and load and store x3d (next generation VRML xml
    format) files if configured to work with the nist.gov x3d translators. It
    also has support for stereoscopic view via "quadbuffer"-capable stereo
    visuals.
