      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 17:49

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

    About: AOLserver is a multithreaded, TCL-enabled, massively scalable and
    extensible Web server tuned for large scale, dynamic Web sites. It
    includes complete database integration, dynamic page scripting, and an
    open, extensible architecture.

    Changes: This version has several major improvements the Tcl library,
    memory management, and overall performance. Projects that already use the

    Software Development :: Interpreters
    System :: Shells
    System :: Systems Administration

    About: BASH Debugger provides a patched BASH that enables better debugging
    support as well as improved error reporting. It also contains the most

    Changes: The "break" command was documented, and "line" was changed to
    "linespec" in the online help where appropriate. The "tbreak" (one-time
    break) and "display" (automatic display) commands were added and

    [010] - BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.162 (Stable)
      by Chris Kennedy (http://freshmeat.net/users/getdown/)
      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 00:10

    Communications :: Email
    Communications :: Email :: Filters
    Security

    About: Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
    dot files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems.
    It also can be used as a qmail-queue replacement or a Postfix Content
    Filter to cover the entire SMTP servers userbase. It is different from
    other, similar programs, in that it scales for thousands of users from
    being in C and not executing external programs for most of its work. It is
    uses flat config files or MySQL to store the configs of each user. Almost
    every type of check in existence for spam is implimented. It can be setup
    like an access list with each check type (over 15 checks currently) having
    its own separate rules for action and scores to choose action precedence.
    Subject tagging, custom headers, and detailed report logging can be fully
    configured from the config file, there is a global config file for default
    users setup, and it works with clamscan, which gives a fully Free
    spam/virus solution which matches any commercial offering.

    Changes: Updated the spamcomplain program and man pages, and updated the
    demon.c program for stopping SMTP floods. An infinite loop bug was fixed,
    and the ordering for weighting actions is now checked. Subject and other
    headers are now processed properly if they are missing a space after the
    colon. A bug with MIME splitting was fixed, where temporary files were
    left behind when attachments were present.

    just by one click without remembering URLs of them any more. The bookmark
    data are stored in a database in the server, and can be searched very
    easily. Bookmarks can be arranged in folders in any depth. For each
    bookmark, visit information is managed, such as the visit counter, or the
    last visit time and date, etc. It is written in PHP script language, and
    requires a database interface such as MySQL.

    Changes: Duplicates are now checked before a new bookmark is added. It is
    possible to filter the address book list by a group, select the fields to
    be displayed, and show schedules after logging in. An 'Edit Mode' is now
    included, and the Italian language is supported.

    About: Consultant Communicator (ConsultComm) is a lightweight,
    cross-platform program that allows anyone managing multiple projects,
    clients, or tasks to effectively keep track of exactly how much time has
    been spent on each project.

    Changes: This release fixes a problem where hitting OK in prefs would set
    the start/stop button to START whether or not the timer was actually
    running has been fixed, as well as a problem in JDBC field mapping where
    old field mappings weren't being deleted and replacement entries were just
    appended to the end of the list. More dialog boxes were converted to use
    line wrapping. The install documents for building with ant were updated.
    It is now only necessary to sign-on once per export, since the project add
    dialog remembers your username and password.

    About: empy is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in
    template text; it takes empy source files, processes them, and produces
    output. This is accomplished via expansions, which are special signals to
    the empy system and are set off by a special prefix (by default the at
    sign, ''). empy can expand arbitrary Python expressions and statements in
    this way, as well as a variety of special forms. Textual data not
    explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output,
    allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Also supported
    are recording and playback via diversions, and dynamic and chainable
    filters. The system is highly configurable via command line options.

      by lunarfox (http://freshmeat.net/users/lunarfox/)
      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 00:24

    System :: Networking :: Firewalls

    About: FIRE|GATE is a Linux 2.4 IPtables script for use as a firewall and
    NAT/masquerade gateway for home or SOHO networks. It shares a single
    internet connection between workstations, and optionally forwards inbound
    HTTP, SMTP, or other requests to an internal server (not a DMZ). Hardware
    requirements are modest, with an i486 capable of handling (at least) 10
    machines. FIRE|GATE differs from many online examples in that it is
    heavily commented, so it's understandable, it is fully contained in one
    script, it includes SYSCTL parameters for increased strength, it addresses
    IM client file transfers, and there is no need to specify/grep for the
    external IP, even if it's assigned via DHCP.

    Changes: Expanded and clarified comments, and added more trojan blocks.
    Portscan and badflag checks are now only performed on the external
    interface. It is now possible to have multiple DHCP servers and turn SSH
    and IDENT on and off. The internal and external interface names can be
    defined, and specific inbound port blocking was changed to be on the
    external interface only, as it would have kept some internal services from
    working.

    About: Gringotts is a small utility that allows you to jot down sensitive
    data (passwords, credit card numbers, PINs, etc.) in an easy-to-read,
    easy-to-access, and most of all very secure form. Gringotts makes use of
    the MCrypt and MHash libraries for encryption, and uses GTK+ 2 for the
    user interface. It lets the user choose from among eight strong encryption
    algorithms (RIJNDAEL-128, RIJNDAEL-256, SERPENT, TWOFISH, CAST-256,
    SAFER+, LOKI97, 3DES), two hashing algorithms (SHA1, RIPEMD 160) and two
    compression techniques (ZLib and BZip2) with four compression ratios.
    Moreover, it allows the user to use any file as a password, as an
    alternative to the usual text string, giving additional choices.

    Changes: A new v3 file format has been introduced, which improves security
    and introduces XML as the internal frame for data. A major bug that caused
    the truncation of opened data has been fixed, and the 512 Kb limit for
    password files has been removed. The entry number that the user last

      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 00:04

    Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

    About: kavi2svcd is a GUI for generating MPEG files from an AVI file
    using transcode and mplex. It then generates a Video CD image using
    vcdimager and burns to CD with cdrdao. It can generate m1v, m2v, and mpa
    files, multiplex the MPEG file, generate cue and bin files, and allows
    the generated command lines to be edited before executing them.

    Changes: Help and documentation sections with a FAQ were added with links
    to the Web pages of the programs used, and KAboutDialog is now used. A
    MyQLineEdit class was added, so that the GetInfo button could be removed.
    Gamma correction was added, as was support for MPEG files using transcode.
    All dialogs are now resizable, and the existence of the required programs
    is checked upon startup.

    [048] - KCachegrind 0.2

      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 00:20

    Software Development
    Software Development :: Testing

    About: KCachegrind visualizes traces generated by profiling, in various
    ways, including a TreeMap visualization of the calls happening, and a
    condensed version, the Coverage analysis. It's designed to be fast and to
    provide a quick overview of very large programs, such as KDE applications.
    It uses Cachegrind as profiling backend, which uses the CPU simulator in
    Valgrind. Thus, profiling does not need any preparation, can cope with
    shared libraries and plugin architectures, and allows for profile runs to
    not influence the measuring by the profile itself, however, the
    disadvantage to this is slower profile runs.

    Changes: Usability has been enhanced. Some gprof terminology is now used,
    and lots of "What's this" help was added. Many visualization options were
    added to the TreeMap widget (for the call graph and trace part overview).
    Titles with cost values can be printed on rectangles, and a perfect
    proportion mode is now available to make the rectangle sizes really become
    proportional to the cost of the corresponding function.

      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 20:26

    About: konserve is a small backup application for KDE 3. It lives in the
    system tray and is able to create backups of several directories or files
    periodically. Konserve uses standard KDE network transparency to upload
    your backups to wherever you want. Also it is possible to restore a
    incidentally-deleted file or directory from a backup file with just one
    mouse click. A nice wizard helps you with the first steps in using
    Konserve.

    Changes: The Preferences dialog makes sure that unsaved changes are
    preserved. Periodic creation of backups can be started in the Preferences
    menu, and hidden archives are not hidden any more (they are prepended with

    About: The Morphon XML-Editor is a validating WSYSIWYG XML editor that
    lets you create and modify XML documents in an intuitive manner. Using
    DTDs (Document Type Definitions) and CSS (Cascading StyleSheets), the

      by Dave Hakim (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhakim/)
      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 17:46

    Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

    About: Moto is a server-side scripting language much like PHP or
    ColdFusion. The difference between Moto and other server-side scripting
    languages is that Moto pages can run interpreted (like PHP) or be natively
    compiled into dynamically loadable Apache modules (an entire Web site
    could be compiled into one .so file). It comes with a full suite of
    objects and functions for state and session management, MySQL database
    connectivity, and a slew of utility classes like stacks, hashtables,
    string buffers, etc. There is also an included interface definition
    language for exposing C functions to Moto. All object allocation occurs in
    a shared memory segment, so maintaining state in objects between page
    views is a snap.

    Changes: This release fixes bugs with arrays of doubles and greatly
    improves array operation performance. It also adds a couple spoonfuls of
    syntactic sugar that make it easier to copy code from Java into moto
    without having to make too many changes to the syntax.

    About: MySQL High Availability clustering is a set of scripts and

    replication. It is transparent to client applications, as the cluster
    uses a shared logical IP to provide the service.

    Changes: Minor changes were made to eliminate redundant script sourcing of
    common.sh. The logger now tags syslog lines with 'mysql-had'. Inconsistent
    variable naming for the mysql rc script was fixed (RC_SCRIPT vs MYSQL_RC).

    About: PFARS For Automatic Replication System is mainly used to sync
    servers in LVS clusters but also has many other uses. It is based on
    rsync over SSH and has native support for the Debian package system.

    Changes: This release fixes a few minor bugs in 0.9.3. It also
    incorporates the new .pfarsignore file support allowing users to easily
    mark individual files or directories to be ignored from replication on
    individual slave servers. This will most likely be the last alpha release
    of pfars before it is declared beta unless a bunch of feedback is received
    asking for new features.

    [097] - Tape-Oriented Backup 0.21
      by Stephen van Egmond (http://freshmeat.net/users/svanegmond/)
      Tuesday, September 24th 2002 18:51

    System :: Archiving :: Backup

    About: Tape-Oriented Backup (tob) is a general driver for making and
    maintaining backups. Given a set of "volume definitions", it creates tar-
    or afio-based backups and stores them either to a device in /dev or a file
    in the filesystem (to be burned to optical media later). Through a
    straightforward configuration file, you can instruct tob to mount and
    unmount devices before beginning backups. tob supports full backups,
    differential backups (of the files which were changed since the last full
    backup), and incremental backups (of files changed since any previous
    backups). It lets you determine the size of the backup before actually
    making it, maintain lists of made backups, make remote backups, and more.

    Changes: This is the "whoops" release. If you were doing backups to tape,
    check your / partition. You might see some new files there. It's also the
    "adoptee" release. tob had been unmaintained since the original maintainer
    moved on. It now has a proper home, with CVS, mailing lists, and
    everything. This release adds much-improved support for backups to
    filesystems. Full backups will delete all old backups. Incremental backups
    will delete older incremental and differential backups.

    Software Development :: Libraries

    About: XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a
    lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server
    which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is
    based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a
    persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter
    the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter
    plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl and PHP client demos are included in the
    xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo clients are scheduled.
    XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback framework, allowing browsers
    (Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant callbacks over a persistent
    http connection. A security plugin framework allows
    authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are LDAP- and
    passwd-based plugins available.

    Changes: C++ client CORBA extensions and a C++ client Windows port, J2EE
    support and jboss integration, a production-stable SOCKET protocol, PHP
    and Perl client demo code, many bugfixes, and many more goodies.
