During the boom years, broadband Internet access was a fact of many
freshmeat users' lives. In the new millennium, many have found that their
return to the basement of the parental home has coincided with a
reintroduction to an old friend, the 56k modem. Others in developing
countries like Nigeria and Idaho wish they had access to even that much
bandwidth. Today, we're happy to announce that we will soon be providing a
service which many of you have requested.

[001] - abcm2ps 3.5.1 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 03:20

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release introduced some minor enhancements to the
positioning of symbols, and allows note names (V: field) to be specified
on two or more lines.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Active PHP Bookmarks (APB) is a web-based program that allows you
to store your bookmarks and display them in many useful ways. It will
sort your bookmarks with usability in mind, keeping often- used bookmarks
at your fingertips. It has a bookmark search, private/public bookmarks,
nested groups, usage rankings, popularity sorting, and a quick add
feature.

Changes: A security hole where external variables could set the path used
within "include" statements was fixed.

  by Marco Paganini (http://freshmeat.net/users/paganini/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 10:27

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Active Spam Killer (ASK) protects your email account against spam
by confirming the sender's email address before actual delivery takes
place. The confirmation happens by means of a "confirmation message" that
is automatically sent to all "unknown" users. Once the sender replies to
that message (a simple reply will do), future emails from that person will
be delivered immediately. You can also specify (regexp) addresses to be
immediately accepted, rejected (with a nastygram) or ignored. The package
also includes a utility to scan your old mailboxes and generate a list of
emails to be accepted automatically.

Changes: Multiple problems with the RPM file have been fixed, the lists
can now be used to match any SMTP header in the incoming mail, making
integration with other anti-spam tools easier, and lots of other smaller
bugfixes have been added.

[004] - aEGiS nanoweb 2.1.2
  by six (http://freshmeat.net/users/six0r/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 18:57

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Nanoweb is a modular HTTP server written in PHP. It is designed to
be small, secure, and extensible. It has decent performance, an HTTP/1.1
implementation, CGI and FastCGI support, a nice configuration system,
name-based virtual hosts, server side includes, authentication, gzip
content encoding support, Apache combined format and MySQL logging, and
many advanced features.

Changes: This release adds a "configtest" option to nanoctl and a new
server theme. It also fixes several minor bugs: access file loader checks
in parent directories on win32, the SCRIPT_NAME server variable which was
built incorrectly when path info was used, and internal statistics
counters which now work in single process mode. Requests for different
vhosts in the same keep alive session are now rejected.

  by Hilko Bengen (http://freshmeat.net/users/bengen/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 03:33

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: AMaViS-ng is a modular rewrite of amavisd and amavis-perl. It scans
email for malicious code inside attachments and archive files, stopping
delivery if malicious code is found. It supports integration of several
third-party virus scanners and integrates nicely into several MTA setups.
Unlike amavis-perl and amavisd, there is no need for build-time
configuration.

Changes: Support for the arj and unzoo tools was added.

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: apachelogrotate.pl rotates and packs the logfiles of the Apache Web
server on a Linux system without interrupting its service and without the
need for a permanent change in the Web server configuration. Assuming that
Apache is running, it will identify the log files which have to be rotated
without any configuration, making it easy to install. By default, logfiles
with more than 10 MB are rotated, but this parameter may be changed and/or
a daily, monthly, or yearly rotation period can be configured.
Documentation is included in the script itself.

Changes: This release adds support for Solaris and fixes a bug in the
interpretation of ps output which caused an abort under certain versions
of Apache.

System :: Installation/Setup

About: Autospec is a program which creates Red Hat Package Manager (RPM)
spec files automatically from a tarball.

Changes: This release adds many improvements to the generated spec files.
Many standard RPM 3/4 macros are used, making the resulting file more
generic. The contents of documentation files are used to fill
%description. The Linux distribution is detected, and an appropriate
Group: line is set, if possible. A %post section is added for library
packages. A bug related to some chown settings using the installwatch -w
option has been fixed. Warnings have been eliminated when running on
Python 2.1. The man page problem in autospec's spec file on Red Hat 7.x
has been fixed.

About: Babeldoc is a framework and set of applications to process
documents for business-to-business and other Internet/integration
applications. It is primarily intended for text documents, especially XML,
but supports a wide range of operations and data types. It has a
sophisticated journaling system that supports replaying and reprocessing.
Babeldoc is pipeline based and supports numerous ways to combine the
pipeline stages in a dynamically reconfigurable fashion. It has a GUI and
a Web-based console for document processing and monitoring, and comes with
tools for the tranformation of flatfile data to XML, archival, and
cryptography. Additionally it is able to scan various data sources based
on sophisticated constraints.

Changes: A nasty bug was removed from the logger. The jdk1.4.1
dependencies were removed. More work was done on the logging. An inline
XSL transformation script was added. Work was done on format strings. The
pipeline classes were refactored.

  by David Sitsky (http://freshmeat.net/users/sits/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 05:50

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
proposed diff in colored-diff mode, and can also view the original and new
files that comprise the review in their entirety when Codestriker is
linked with CVS or Subversion. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

Changes: Massive refactoring was done so that the diff parsing and
rendering code is broken up into a number of clearly defined modules,
which will allow for the easier adoption of different SCM systems in the
future. In addition to CVS and PATCH modules, which existed in previous
version of codestriker but have now been ported into the new module
structure, Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org) support has been
included. HTML generation was modified so topic view output is smaller, by
using javascript functions to reduce the HREF size for each code line.

Communications
Communications :: Email :: Address Book
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Contact_Vcard_Parse is a PHP class that allows you to parse vCard
files and text blocks, and get back an array of the elements of each vCard
in the file or text.

Changes: All returned values are now at equal "depth" in the returned
array to match the upcoming Contact_Vcard_Build class; see the new
documentation at http://ciaweb.net/free/contact_vcard_parse for an
outline. Array key names for N and ADR data types have been shortened
(e.g., "given_name" is now "given"). Line unfolding now only replaces the
first leading whitespace character on folded lines, not all leading
whitespace.

  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 17:26

Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters

About: Duke Nukem Forever is part four in a series of PC games featuring
Duke Nukem as the hero. Parts one (Duke Nukem) and two (Duke Nukem 2) were
sidescrollers/platform games, and part three, Duke Nukem 3D, was an FPS.
Duke Nukem 3D became one of the top-selling games of all time, and is a
very important part of FPS gaming history; it is one of the few
"legendary" titles, together with Quake and Doom. The game is one of the
most sophisticated FPS games ever. It features everything the Unreal
engine has, but also features things like LOD, skeletal animation, and
motion capture, for an optimal playing experience.

[027] - dvd::rip 0.50.10 (Stable)
  by Jörn Reder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jred/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 13:34

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It
provides an easy-to-use but feature-rich GTK+ GUI to control almost all
aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known
video processing swissknife, transcode, and many other Open Source tools.

Changes: This release mainly fixes several minor bugs. The GUI no longer
blocks on DVD TOC reading, and provides a better error message if
something goes wrong there. Two bugs in chapter mode are fixed:
transcoding a frame range now reports the proper progress, and viewing a
vobsub movie doesn't show an error message anymore. A bug is fixed which
produced an AVI file in the first pass of an Ogg/Vorbis quality encoding.

[030] - Echomine Muse Communications API 0.8a3
  by Chris Chen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ckchris/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 19:11

Communications
Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
Communications :: Chat :: ICQ

About: Echomine Muse Communications API is a Java API with the goal of
integrating all network-collaboration services into one. The API will give
an easy-to-use interface that allows you to log on to multiple services
i.e. ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, IRC, Napster, Gnutella, Jabber, and
XMLRPC. There will be a client GUI Framework API to combine the use of all
these services under one easy-to-access API, so that you can write the GUI
client with much less effort.

Changes: This release adds full JEP-0054 (vcard-temp) namespace support.
The authentication digest password is now lowercase to fit with XMPP
protocol standards. Presence type is not included in the message when the
type is "available" (it is considered the default). Workarounds have been
added to the API to have better compatibility with non-protocol-conforming
Jabber servers such as RhombusIM. This release should work better with
non-jabberd servers.

a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way.
To some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, SAX, and
DocBook SGML. Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes
xmllint, a command line XML validator.

[057] - LiteWebServer 3.0.2
  by Hans Bergsten (http://freshmeat.net/users/bergsten/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 00:15

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: LiteWebServer (LWS) is a small, modular Web server and Java web
container. It is based on code from Apache's popular Tomcat server,
tweaked and extended for easier installation and management. It consists
of a set of modules that can be installed separately, so you can install
and manage exactly the features you need. The base module provides basic
Web server features (HTTP/1.1 support) and support for the Servlet API.
Add-on modules provide additional features, such as JSP support.
Installing new modules and upgrading or removing existing modules is as
easy as can be with the bundled JustGetIt module manager.

Changes: This release is based on Tomcat 4.1.24 and fixes many bugs. A few
LWS-specific bugs were also fixed, and welcome file handling was improved
in line with the requirements for the upcoming Servlet 2.4 specification.

It provides a unifying abstraction for all of the interesting performance
data in a system, and allows client applications to easily retrieve and
process any subset of that data using a single API. A client-server
architecture allows multiple clients to monitor the same host, and a
single client to monitor multiple hosts. Archive logging and replay are

[069] - PHP File Upload Class 2.4
  by Dave Tufts (http://freshmeat.net/users/davetufts/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 13:30

Software Development

About: fileupload-class.php extends PHP's native support for uploading
files through a Web browser. It can clean up the file's name, detect its
mime type, and add the proper extension. Special characters in the file's
name get deleted and spaces get replaced with underscores. The new
"cleaned up" name is then returned by the class for use with a database or
link management. There is also the ability to add your own mime-types and
corresponding extensions. Other customizable variables include the path to
the directory where files will be uploaded, maximum file size, maximum
image width, maximum image height, acceptable file types, and whether or
not uploaded files can be overwritten.

Changes: Error messaging now supports multiple languages. Currently, all
error messages are available in English and French. This release also
includes minor code cleanup.

  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 11:36

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: SCons is a software construction tool (build tool substitute for
Make) implemented in Python. It features a modular build engine that can
be embedded in other software. SCons configuration files are Python
scripts that call the build engine API. It can scan files to detect
dependencies automatically and maintain a global view of all dependencies
in a build tree, and uses MD5 signatures to detect changed file contents
reliably. Timestamps can be used if you prefer. SCons also supports
parallel builds and is easily extensible through user-defined builder and
 scanner objects.

Changes: This release fixes a critical bug when source files are not
duplicated in a build directory (that is, you use "BuildDir(duplicate=0)")
and any subsidiary SConscript file includes another SConscript file. This
release also contains an unrelated fix to support fetching files using
earlier versions of Perforce which don't use the Windows registry.

monsters, more objects, more dungeon levels, more roles, and more races,
shopkeeper services, and techniques for you to use, and invisible objects
and gypsies for those who feel lucky. It also comes with a GTK windowing
interface and higher resolution tile sets as options.

Changes: The NetHack 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 codebases have been integrated into
the game. Support for proxy window interfaces has been added (e.g., to
allow the game and the interface to exist in separate
processes/computers). A new SDL/GL window interface has been included.
Numerous third-party patches have been incorporated. The display code now
uses a layered model, allowing monsters to be displayed on top of objects
etc. Numerous other new features have been accepted into the game and many
bugs have been fixed. This is an alpha release; there are still many fatal
bugs remaining.

[090] - slurm 0.2.2
  by Hendrik Scholz (http://freshmeat.net/users/hscholz/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 18:54

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: slurm started as a port of pppstatus to FreeBSD and now is a
generic network load monitor. It features three different modes with
real-time ASCII graphs and interface statistics for all kinds of network
interfaces on FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux.

Changes: This release re-adds Solaris support with autotools so
./configure&&make works. The new -z option virtually resets the counter
either at startup as a commandline option or at any time while running,
using the "z" key. A padding problem which left garbage on the screen in
some cases has been fixed.

[093] - StormSiren 0.61
  by Rory McManus (http://freshmeat.net/users/Slorf/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 02:00

Internet
Utilities

About: StormSiren is a personal severe weather monitoring tool that
communicates information from National Weather Service issued bulletins on
potential and imminent hazardous weather. When such bulletins are
detected, the program sends a concise summary of the alert to one or more
devices, including pagers, SMS-capable wireless phones, or e-mail
accounts. The summaries are designed to fit within a 160 character display
and contain the type of hazard, the affected counties and cities defined
by the user, and the issue and expiration times of the bulletin.

Changes: This update added the ability to send the full text of NWS alerts
 to e-mail accounts, while sending the short alert to pagers and wireless
phones. This way if you get paged on a severe weath er event while near
your computer, you can still check your ma il for the full text of the
bulletin. It also added state file managem ent, a minor regular expression
adjustment, and some internal d ata structure improvements.

[096] - The XSLT C library for GNOME 1.0.29
  by DV (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielveil/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 08:29

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxslt is a C library for GNOME which allows developers to work
with XSLT. It is based on libxml for XML parsing, tree manipulation, and
XPath support. It is written in plain C, making as few assumptions as
possible, and sticking closely to ANSI C/POSIX for easy embedding. It
should work on Linux, Unix, and Windows. Though not designed primarily
with performances in mind, libxslt seems to be a relatively fast
processor. It also include full support for the EXSLT set of extension
functions as well as some common extensions present in other XSLT engines.

Changes: Speed improvements were made, especially for large flat
documents. Fixes were made for result value tree handling and keys. Some
extra namespace declarations have been avoided and some portability fixes
were included.

[098] - Trackballs 0.9.0
  by Mathias Broxvall (http://freshmeat.net/users/mbrx/)
  Tuesday, April 1st 2003 00:04

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Trackballs is a simple game similar to the classic game Marble
Madness. By steering a marble through a track filled with vicious hammers,
pools of acid, and other obstacles the player collects points. When the
ball reaches the destination, the player continue to the next, more
difficult track - unless, of course, time runs out first.

Changes: New levels and objects were created, including cacti, birds, side
spikes, teleporters, and fountains. New calculations are made for visible
cells. It is now possible to have water and arbitrary textures on maps,
and splash effects when in water or acid. Sparkles now appear around the
mouse in menus, many new shortcuts were added to the editor, and many bugs
were fixed. New features include pausing (by pressing 'p'), taking
screenshots (with 'Print Screen'), and batch updating of old levels.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: TrustWall HTTP Proxy protects your internal Web server by acting as
an inbound proxy (like a reserve Squid proxy). It can also work as a
secure outbound proxy to protect your browser client. It allows you to
inspect almost every detail of the HTTP protocol headers, including the
URL request line, the server version, user-agent, referrer, cookie, query,
etc., in a easy-to-use script-like configuration file. This program is
generally considered an "Expert Tool"; you will need knowledge of the HTTP
protocol to configure the proxy properly.

Changes: A spelling mistake in the 501 HTTP error was fixed. The program
now compiles more smoothly under Red Hat 8.0, and an RPM for Red Hat 7.3
was released.
