by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
Wednesday, April 9th 2003 17:09
System :: Systems Administration
About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple
programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and
extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.
Changes: Stream manipulators were added so you can, for example, write
expressions in LaTeX mode by feeding the "latex" modifier object into the
output stream. Substitutions in products and powers can now be done in a
more intelligent fashion. Index dimensions can now be specified for scalar
products. Some obsolete methods and functions were removed.

and requires no advanced SQL knowledge, allowing even non-expert
programmers to create complex queries.
Changes: QuB was migrated to the PHP_MySQL server model, allowing
developers to create SQL queries visually. This version also includes some
bug corrections and improvements. Notable improvements include the
addition of new properties to Recordset XML to comply with new AdvRs
modifications, the removal of the old JSExtensions/MMSiteSettings.dll from

About: Kernel TCP Virtual Server is a Layer-7 switching software in the

(such as content-based scheduling) inside the Linux kernel. The reason for
implementing it inside the kernel is to avoid the overhead of context
switching and memory copying between user-space and kernel-space. Although
the its scalability is lower than that of IPVS (IP Virtual Server), it is
flexible, because the content of the request is known before the request
is redirected to the real server.

initially developed for machine translation purposes, it can be used in
many different fields, such as spam filtering and text adventure games.
Changes: Documentation in English is now available for all the functions
of both the natural language processing and unicode libraries. A standard
test script (that shows a basic usage) was added. Token-lists can now be
created independently of the parser. Frequencies in token-lists are now
faster for very large corpi (but not noticeable in small texts). The UTF-8

About: Penguin Greetings is a Perl CGI application to implement Internet
greeting cards on Linux and other Unix-based systems. It includes a
complete ecard Website with 20+ cards for users who want a "plug and play"
ecards solution. It is intended to make ecards more like email by using
multipart MIME email and including message text. The HTML for the cards
and the creation screens are stored in templates so that users can
completely customize the look of the program. Penguin Greetings
incorporates EmbPerl so that full Perl expressions can be incorporated in
to templates for server-side processing. Access to the card creation
functions can be optionally restricted to users in an htpasswd file to
avoid giving world wide access to your server. The emailing function and
data storage are carried out by a separate daemon program which allows for
cards to be mailed on specific dates and improves security and logging.
Extensive documentation is provided as well an example Website that make
full use of the EmbPerl scripting capabilities.
Changes: Many cards were added, including cards for Easter, birthdays,
love, encouragement, and so on. A whole new card configuration system was
installed, based on Perl data-structures that are developer configurable.
The transition system between templates (flow-of-control) was upgraded to
vastly improve flexibility. The demonstration Web site was completly
redone to take advantage of Embperl and to give it a more polished look.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: phpScribe generates documentation files for projects by parsing the
comment lines inserted in the source code. The comments must be written in
the code in a way they can be later interpreted by the parser. Therefore,
there is a pattern that may be respected by the developers who want to use
phpScribe features.
Changes: The file parser was rewritten, including new features such as
full support for constants, default values for function parameters, new
tags (
since and
deprecated) in methods and functions, and support for
multiple
note tags in classes, methods, and functions. Some bugs were
fixed in the document generation module. The database access module ADODb
was updated to the latest version (3.40).

Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
About: PyDDR is a clone of DDR ("Dance Dance Revolution") written in
Python. The idea of DDR is simple. There's a mat with four directional
arrows, and the game scrolls arrows up the screen to the beat while
playing a song. When the arrows reach the top of the screen (not sooner
and not later), the player hits the corresponding arrow on the pad, and
given that it's hit on time with the beat, points are scored. Based on how
well the dance is put together, s/he is graded at the end of the song.
Both keyboard and mat play are supported.
Changes: A new (experimental) install system and directory layout is in
place, which currently works on Unix, and somewhat on Windows. Manual
pages are now included. Many pieces of the code have been cleaned up or
fixed, with the addition of multiple song directory support. Last but not
least, simple nonstop mode support has been added (mark songs with "m" in
the song selector to make a playlist).

[073] - Rubber 0.99.6
by Emmanuel Beffara (http://freshmeat.net/users/xunam/)
Wednesday, April 9th 2003 10:11
Text Processing :: Markup :: LaTeX
About: Rubber is a building system for LaTeX documents. It is based on a
routine that runs just as many compilations as necessary. The module
system provides a great flexibility that virtually allows support for any
package with no user intervention, as well as pre- and post-processing of
the document. The standard modules currently provide support for bibtex,
dvips, pdftex, makeindex, cweb, and graphics/graphicx, currently with
automatic epstopdf and fig2dev (for XFig figures) conversion and Metapost
compilation.
Changes: This version improves the support for graphics generation,
notably it now handles combined EPS/LaTeX and understands \graphicspath
macros. A notion of directive has been added to put compiling information
in the source file, to specify paper type or various paths. It also fixes
a few bugs.

Wednesday, April 9th 2003 04:51
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: Sawfish (the window manager formerly known as Sawmill) is an
extensible window manager using a Lisp-based extension language. All
window decorations are configurable and all user-interface policy is
controlled through the language. Its aim is to manage windows in the most
flexible and attractive manner possible. As such it does not implement
desktop backgrounds, application docks, or other things that may be
achieved through separate applications. Sawfish is mostly GNOME-compliant;
almost all configuration may be made through a graphical interface.
Changes: This version implements the EMWH "show desktop" mode, sets client
window gravity to "StaticGravity" while reparenting windows, and supports
the EWMH "SKIP_TASKBAR" state. Window history keys may now have multiple
properties, and more placement modes are now multihead-aware.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Sessionara is a session-based data environment with MySQL. This
class enables you to open a virtual session (identified by an unique
session ID), then set and access variables in this environment. If you
pass the session ID within multiple pages (via GET/POST parameters), then
you get an easy and powerful way to pass values between various pages. The
class also includes good string functions and brings session handling
together with some nice database functions. It enables you to query the
MySQL server one time, store the entire result rows in the session, and
then loop through your records inside the class without fetching the same
content from MySQL again.
Changes: An improved security mechanism called "strid", a new class of
variables called "session queries", and new flexibility were added. You
can change the class' configuration anytime. Some code was rewritten, and
the entire class got cleaned up and optimized. Better and more in-depth
documentation was also included.

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: Window Maker :: Applets
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: WMND (Window Maker Network Devices) is a dockapp for monitoring
multiple network interfaces simultaneously. Based on WMiFS 1.3b, WMND has
been almost totally re-written and is more optimized, flexible, and
consumes less CPU time than wmmon.
Changes: WMND now includes a new IF-MIB snmp driver. You can now monitor
local and/or remote interfaces (routers, switches, etc) a la MRTG, but in
true realtime. The README includes important notes about this driver.

[102] - xbindkeys 1.6.4
by Philippe Brochard (http://freshmeat.net/users/hocwp/)
Wednesday, April 9th 2003 05:36
Desktop Environment
About: xbindkeys is a program that associates keys or mouse buttons to
shell commands under X. After a little configuration, it can start many
commands with the keyboard (e.g. control+alt+x starts an xterm) or with
the mouse buttons.
Changes: This version adds a compile-time option to launch programs with a
system call instead of a fork+exec call. A troublesome call to umask(022)
in the daemonize function was removed.

[104] - XML parser class 2003.04.09
by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: XML parser class is a PHP class that parses arbitrary XML input and
builds an array with the structure of all tag and data elements.
Optionally it can keep track of the positions of each element to locate
elements that may be contextually in error. Supports a parsed file cache
to minimize the overhead of parsing the same file repeatedly. Optimized
parsing of simplified XML (SML) formats ignoring the tag attributes.
Changes: This version fixes the cache file modification time verification.
It avoids using the PHP short tag and passing arguments by reference in
the example script to prevent warnings.

[105] - ZINC interpreter 0.5 Beta
by The Zinc Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/zinc/)
Wednesday, April 9th 2003 17:08
Games/Entertainment
About: Zinc (the Z-machine Including Network Capabilities) allows you to
play text adventure games (also known as interactive fiction) either on
your own, or cooperatively over a network. It comes with interpreters for
two of the most popular interactive fiction file formats--Z-machine games
and TADS games. A common problem when playing adventure games is drawing a
map of the game world. Seasoned players will be glad to hear that Zinc has
a powerful map facility to make this process as painless as possible.
Zinc's networking capabilities are possibly unique. They enable several
players to work together to try to solve a game.
