[001] - Compact Disc Input and Control Library 0.2
  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 01:59

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries

About: This library encapsulates CD-ROM reading and control. Applications
wishing to be oblivious of the OS- and device-dependent properties of a
CD-ROM can use this library. Some support for disk image types like
BIN/CUE and NRG is available, so applications that use this library also
have the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. A sample
utility for displaying CD info is included.

Changes: Support for reading audio sectors was added. cdinfo can now use
libcddb to retrieve CDDB information. Regression tests were added and a
number of bugs were fixed.

World Wide Web applications. cgic performs the following tasks: It parses
form data, with browser correction, Transparently accepts both GET and
POST form data, Handles line breaks in form fields in a consistent manner,
Provides string, integer, floating-point, and single/multiple-choice
functions to retrieve form data, provides bounds checking for numeric
fields, loads CGI environment variables into C strings which are always
non-null, and provides a way to capture CGI situations for replay in a
debugging environment.

Changes: In CGIC 2.0 and 2.01, if the HTTP_COOKIE environment variable was
exactly equal to the name of a cookie requested with cgiCookieString, with
no value or equal sign or other characters present, a buffer overrun could
take place.

  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 13:13

Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: gnocl is a GTK / Gnome extension for the programming language Tcl.
It provides easy to use commands to quickly build Gnome compliant user
interfaces including the Gnome canvas widget and drag and drop support. It
is loosely modeled after the Tk package.

Changes: This release adds the new subcommands "collapse" and "expand" to
the tree widget. The tree and list widgets now have the new subcommands
"scrollToPosition" and "setSelection" and a new option "single" in the
subcommand "add". The text widget now has a "scrollToPosition" subcommand.
The option -size of the widget command has been renamed to -stockSize. Its
new option -size scales the widget. Many widget now have the option
-hasFocus. The new callback command calls a TCL script at regular
intervals. The clipboard command manipulates the standard clipboard. The
GTK and TCL event loops now cooperate better.

[024] - Gnome Swallow 1.1
  by Peter Amstutz (http://freshmeat.net/users/tetron/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 17:50

Desktop Environment :: Gnome 2

About: Gnome Swallow is a GNOME 2 implementation of a very useful feature
of the orignal GNOME panel--the ability to "swallow" other programs, to
embed small applications in the panel even if the application was not
specifically written for GNOME.

Changes: This release removes a bit of debugging code accidentally left in
which caused the swallower to crash on almost everyone's computer except
the author's. It fixes a hanging bug and another crashing bug, and adds a
feature to use the application name as the default window name to search
for. Hopefully, this version should work for everyone.

  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 05:58

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: Gringotts is a small utility that allows you to jot down sensitive
data (passwords, PINs, small files, etc.) in an easy-to-read,
easy-to-access, and most of all very secure form. Gringotts makes use of
GTK+ 2 for the user interface, and lets the user choose from among eight
strong encryption algorithms (RIJNDAEL-128, RIJNDAEL-256, SERPENT,
TWOFISH, CAST-256, SAFER+, LOKI97, 3DES), two hashing algorithms (SHA1,
RIPEMD 160) and two compression techniques (ZLib and BZip2) with four
compression ratios. Moreover, it allows the user to use any file or an
entire floppy disk as a password, as an alternative to the usual text
string, giving additional choices.

Changes: This release features a major cleanup of many internal aspects.
Some race conditions have been fixed. Some functions were moved to the
libraries (where they can be more useful). Some possible fault conditions

[027] - HTML Family Tree Generator 1.2
  by Simon Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkward/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 07:53

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: HTML Family Tree Generator is a pair of CGI Perl scripts that will
create views of a family tree from a supplied data file. The data file is
a simple text file, listing the family members, parents, and other
details. It is possible to show a tree of ancestors and descendants for
any person, showing any number of generations. Other facilities are
provided for showing email directories, birthdays, and more.

Changes: A bug which, on rare occasions, caused part of the tree to be
misaligned was fixed. A setup option now allows the tree to run without
portraits. A config option to specify the background image was added. A
bug in the index page, which caused an initial blank entry, was fixed.
This version is fully backwards compatible, since the data file format
remains unchanged.

[030] - ipsvd 0.3.0
  by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 07:07

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of "internet protocol service daemons". It includes
daemons for TCP/IP and UDP/IP. An internet protocol service (ipsv) daemon
waits for incoming connections on a socket. For new connections, it
conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the connection. ipsv
daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined instructions on how to
handle incoming connections. It's possible to run different programs, set
a different environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency
limit that depends on the client's address or hostname. ipsvd can be used
to run services usually run by inetd, xinetd, or tcpserver. Normally the
ipsv daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or supervise from the daemontools package.

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Testing

About: Kodos is a regular expression designer, tester, debugger, and
validator that allows a developer to create and modify regular expressions
against a test string. The intuitive interface allows the developer the
ability to modify the regular expression (regex) and to see the effects
against their test string in real-time.

Changes: This release adds the ability to (un)pause regex processing, an
"import file" option in the file menu, a bug-reporting mechanism within
the application, an additional preference (email server) in the
preferences menu (for use with the bug reporting window), a three-second
timeout for editing, and a code cleanup. It fixes a bug which prevented
Kodos from launching if used with PyQt (Qt) 2.x and a prefs tabbing issue.
All windows now share the same Kodos toolbar text logo (previously, there
was a disconnect between the main, help, and reference windows).

  by Germano Rizzo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mano78/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 05:52

Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: libGringotts is a small, easy-to-use, thread-safe C library
originally developed for Gringotts. Its purpose is to encapsulate data in
an encrypted and compressed file. It uses strong cryptographic algorithms
(RIJNDAEL 128/256, SERPENT, TWOFISH, CAST256, SAFER+, LOKI97, and 3DES for
encryption, and SHA1 and RIPEMD-160 for hashing) to ensure the data are as
safe as possible, and allow the user to have the complete control over all
the encryption, hashing, and compression algorithms used in the process.
It also provides functions for encrypting temporary files and to securely
manage memory. It is based upon libmcrypt and mhash, and supports
pkgconfig.

Changes: Seven new functions were added and documented. A test program has
been added, and performing "make check" will now execute this test to
verify library functionality. Many little fixes have been performed,
including better verification of some fault conditions that weren't
getting verified before. It is also slightly faster.

Software Development :: Version Control
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS

About: Meta-CVS is version control system created around CVS. It retains
most of the features of CVS while adding support for first class directory
structure versioning, storage of symbolic links, and versioning of execute
permissions and user-defined properties. Meta-CVS greatly simplifies
branching and merging by keeping track of what is merged where. It records
file types and automatically assigns a CVS keyword expansion mode to newly
added files whose suffixes match previously recorded types. Meta-CVS also
has an importing feature that automatically figures out renames and moves,
making it possible to easily keep up with patches from multiple sources in
spite of directory structure changes.

Changes: A bug in the xargs logic that splits large CVS command lines into
smaller ones was fixed. Hard link synchronization logic was improved and

processing, such as replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding
boilerplate disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts
of a MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can
also bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11/8.12's new "Milter" API, which makes it more flexible and
efficient than procmail-based approaches.

Changes: MIMEDefang now supports Central Command's Vexira anti-virus

[054] - ntop 2.2
  by Luca Deri (http://freshmeat.net/users/deri/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 01:48

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: ntop is a network probe that shows network usage in a way similar
to what top does for processes. In interactive mode, it displays the
network status on the user's terminal. In Web mode, it acts as a Web
server, creating an HTML dump of the network status. It sports a
NetFlow/sFlow emitter/collector, an HTTP-based client interface for
creating ntop-centric monitoring applications, and RRD for persistently
storing traffic statistics.

Changes: This release has been tested on a large number of platforms and
configurations including the AMD Opteron. SQL support was removed in
favour of RRD, and an rrdPlugin was added. Passive host OS fingerprinting
was implemented, and problem report skeletons are created for better bug
handling. A major internal code cleanup was made. Also added were AS,
VLAN, 802.11Q, and PPPoE support, an XML data export mode, limited
internationalization, protocol decoders for Gnutella, KaZaA, WinMX, and

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHPlist is a mailing list system that allows posting via a Web
page. It works well when used for announcements, and can handle very large
email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists, but will only
receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing up, users can
identify their geographical location, and messages can be targetted to
these. You can add place holders in your email that will be replaced with
personal details (such as the person's name). Users can update their own
information, and unlike many other mailing list systems, they can change
their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Changes: A major problem in which unsubscribe had stopped working has been

Security
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: quicktables is an iptables firewall/NAT (gateway) script generator.
It was created to quickly provide a secure set of iptables rules. It will
ask you to answer a small handful of questions, and generates your very
own personalized firewall script. It supports NAT and no NAT (firewall
only) options, default policy of DROP on INPUT and FORWARD chains (all
packets dropped), TCP and UDP ACCEPTs on INPUT chain (open ports to the
firewall machine), TCP and UPD port forwarding with NAT (forward ports to
multiple internal hosts--NAT only), multiple ICMP (ping) options, multiple
logging options (syslog - kern.info), explicit host drops, and multiple
port forwards for multiple external IP addresses.

Changes: This version fixes an issue with broken UDP ACCEPTs on FORWARD
chains, adds rate limiting on LOG target, and adds considerable amounts
of user input verification. Yes/no questions no longer print an error if
enter is hit without a yes or no answer.

[068] - Remote Tea 1.0.2

  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 07:17

Communications
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Networking

About: Remote Tea is a pure Java implementation of Sun's ONC/RPC protocol.
Complete client and server functionality is available, as is client access
to the portmapper. The package contains an rpcgen-like precompiler for
converting .x files into Java classes. Also included is a Java-based
portmapper.

Changes: Code generation bugs in jrpcgen were fixed, so that elements from
enumerations can now be used as program numbers. Moreover, if a port
number is explicitly given to the constructor of a server object, it is
not ignored anymore. Two new jrpcgen command line options give more
control over the code generation process: method stubs on the server side
can now optionally take a call information parameter, which is useful for
authentication, et cetera.

About: Scsh is a systems-programming environment for POSIX systems and
Win32, embedded in the Scheme programming language. It includes a
high-level process notation for writing shell-script like programs, with
pipelines and redirections. Scsh additionally provides low-level access to
POSIX primitives, plus important non-POSIX extensions such as sockets.
Scsh is implemented on top of Scheme48, a portable bytecode implementation
of Scheme. A number of user-contributed extensions are available,
including an extensible HTTP and FTP server, a socket-level PostgreSQL
interface, a programmable text formatting language, and a Postscript
generation language.

Changes: This release adds two new command line switches for loading exec
scripts. The select problem was fixed, a revised version of SRFI-19 is
supplied, problems in wait-for-channels, get_group, write-string/partial,
and the timezone code were corrected, and send-message can now send an
empty datagram. The scsh image is now dumped with md5 loaded, and the
pause-until-interrupt was removed because because it is not compatible

[083] - xinetd 2.3.11
  by Steve Grubb (http://freshmeat.net/users/stevegrubb/)
  Tuesday, April 15th 2003 13:22

About: xinetd is a replacement for inetd, the internet services daemon.
Anybody can use it to start servers that don't require privileged ports
because xinetd does not require that the services in its configuration
file be listed in /etc/services. It can do access control on all services
based on the address of the remote host, time of access, connection
attempts, or process limits. Access control works on all services, whether
multi-threaded or single-threaded and for both the TCP and UDP protocols.
xinetd supports both internal access control, and the use of the libwrap
library. IPv6 with access control is also supported. It can redirect
service requests to other machines, and has the standard built in
services, including tcpmux.

Changes: This release fixes memory leaks introduced in 2.3.10, makes
tcpmux work again, corrects bind directives in the defaults section, and
adds numerous code cleanups.
