[001] - adcfw-log 0.8.1
by Alessandro Dotti Contra (http://freshmeat.net/users/adotticontra/)
Wednesday, April 16th 2003 17:55
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
Utilities
About: adcfw-log is a tool for analyzing firewall logs in order to
extract meaningful information. It is designed to be a standalone script
with very few requirements that can generate different kinds of reports,
such as fully formatted reports of what had been logged, with summaries
by source or destination host, the type of service, or protocol. There
are also options to filter the input data by date, host, protocol,
service, and so on.
Changes: In this release two minor bugs were fixed: a wrong recognition of
RES field values which led to wrong reports output was fixed, and an error
message is issued if --detailed option is used without specifying a
summary.

Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Agar is a graphical game engine aimed primarily at applications
ranging from SDL 2D games to multithreaded 3D simulations. The engine
currently implements tile-based levels, a level editor, a GUI, as well as
various other thread-safe interfaces for use in game programming.
Changes: Moving game objects can now occupy more than one node, and may be
treated recursively. More efficient buffering in the I/O library allow
faster loading/saving of states. This release also includes various API
improvements.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML
About: Aranha is a piece of software written to allow Web applications to
be written more cleanly and more easily. It is a Local FastCGI Responder,
although work is in progress to allow it to work as a FastCGI Authoriser
and a FastCGI Filter. It is based on the programming language Lua, and
contains many extensions to enable easy Web site development and
maintenance.
Changes: The module loader is fixed for a state-count of more than 1,
cookies are now supported and auto-decoded for you, and the lua and luac
binaries are included in the distribution. Several gd fixes have been
added, and the dbi library has been fixed in several places. Aranha's core
(the diverter) has been upgraded. Finally, and perhaps most importantly,
the version of Lua shipped with Aranha has been updated to Lua 5.0 (final
release).

Wednesday, April 16th 2003 07:09
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: Atkins can be used to examine variables, tables, and linked lists
in the running kernel. Subcommands can be entered to show formatted
kernel administration of processes, open files, incore inodes, page cache
buffers, sockets, etc. Memory dumps can be shown using virtual or
physical addresses, or using addresses within user space of a particular
process. Furthermore stack backtraces can be printed e.g. to determine
the reason why a particular process is currently in a wait- state. Note
that atkins requires a certain level of knowledge about the Linux kernel.
Changes: Ports to RedHat 7.3/8.0/9.0, SuSE 8.0, and kernel version 2.4.20
from kernel.org.

Wednesday, April 16th 2003 13:29
System :: Emulators
Utilities
About: Bochs-Tools is a collection of scripts and programs to be used
together with the Bochs emulator. The main goal is to provide a more
Unix-like interface to the emulator and to enable access to Bochs disk
images from outside of Bochs. This project makes it very simple to copy an
existing OS installation to a Bochs image (as long as Linux has write
access to the relevant file system).
Changes: This release adds bxtclone (the all-in-one create, copy, install
LILO script) and an RPM package. There are minor code cleanups and
bugfixes.

beyond the galaxy. Visit over 100,000 stars, 100 solar system bodies, and
all known extrasolar planets.
Changes: This is a major update from 1.2.5. The most significant addition
is the multiview feature, which allows several simultaneous views of an
event from different locations. There are also new keyboard commands for
handling light time delay, improved browser integration, a more convenient
structure for add-ons, better graphics card support, and fixes for some
nasty bugs that plagued version 1.2.5.

[007] - Cherokee 0.4.3-pre7
by alo (http://freshmeat.net/users/godsmaze/)
Wednesday, April 16th 2003 09:48
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
System :: Networking
About: Cherokee is a tiny, ultrafast, lightweight Web server. It is
implemented entirely in C, and has no dependencies beyond a standard C
library. It is embeddable, extensible with plug-ins, and supports
on-the-fly configuration by reading files or strings.
Changes: This release adds two new handlers. The first is based on
GNOME-VFS and enables access to a lot of sources (the httpd now can serve
files from a tar.gz or an FTP server on the fly). The second implements
the "nearest neighbor" algorithm. If this handler get a wrong request, it
will search for another good request to exchange it with, so the requester
will never get a error message. Lots of the code has been rewritten for
performance and cleanliness. A benchmark has been written and included in
the package.

by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
Wednesday, April 16th 2003 07:02
Communications
Database
Database :: Front-Ends
About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.
Changes: A much simpler XML format was made for Lists and Sets, making it
easier to read and to generate with non-JSX tools. Serialization's
writeUnshared() and readUnshared() are now implemented, as is
serialPersistentFields.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JFreeReport is a Java report generator. Using data from a Swing
TableModel, JFreeReport can send output to the screen (print preview) and
the printer, and export to text, CSV, HTML, XML, Excel, and Acrobat PDF
files.
Changes: This release fixes several critical bugs and some memory leaks.
Complete profiling of the report library has been done and performance has
been improved. Many unneccessary object creations are also avoided now, so
that the memory performance is in much better shape. This release had been
successfully tested with a report of 10000 pages. Some of the bugfixes
affect the API in a non-backward-compatible way, so please read the file
"migration.txt" when upgrading.

[030] - Jhead 2.0
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Wednesday, April 16th 2003 07:18
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: Jhead is a command line driven utility for extracting digital
camera settings from the Exif format files used by many digital cameras.
It handles the various confusing ways these can be expressed, and displays
them as F-stop, shutter speed, etc. It is also able to reduce the size of
digital camera JPEGs without loss of information, by deleting integral
thumbnails that digital cameras put into the Exif header. If you need to
add Exif support to a program, this is a simple program to cut and paste
from. Many projects, including PHP, have reused code from this utility.
Changes: This release introduces a man page, automatic image rotation,
some further new options, a warning for erasing existing files, and some
minor fixes.

allows merges. The margins show location of changes for easy browsing, and
it also features a tabbed interface that allows you to open many diffs at
once.
Changes: This release adds a fallback font if "monospace" is not
available, a --profile option, more colorful filediff, version checking in
the main script, support for a CVS diff for a single file from the
commandline, and better handling of keyboard focus. It does not refresh

System :: Networking
About: Nast is a packet sniffer and a LAN analyzer based on Libnet and
Libpcap. It can sniff the packets on a network interface in normal mode or
in promiscuous mode. It dumps the headers of packets and the payload in
ASCII or ASCII-hex format. Various packet filters can be applied. The data
sniffed can be saved in a separate file. As an analysis tool, it can check
for other NICs on the network which are set in promiscuous mode, build a
list of all hosts on a LAN, find a gateway, perform port scanning on a
multiple hosts, catch daemon banners, follow the TCP data stream, reset a
connection, and determine whether a link type is a hub or switch.
Changes: This version adds logging support to car() and psearch(), two
logging features for sniffing, a traffic monitoring feature, and some
converting functions. It extends promiscuous mode research to all network
NICs. pcap_open_live() now works with *BSD, and a video output bug in
car(), a common return value (NULL) of map_lan(), and a bug in mport()
with telnet banner reader were fixed. Many sniffer features were worked
on. It was ported to FreeBSD.

System :: Networking
About: SMTP map uses a fingerprinting technology to scan for the version
of whatever SMTP server software which is running on a machine.
Changes: Many bugfixes in the POP3 scanner and some slight bugfixes in the
other scanners were made. Some parts of the scanners were rebuilt so that
simple scanner preventions are now blocked. The results should also be
more accurate now, since the resulting fingerprints should be more
generic. Be careful if you have used smtpmap in scripts; some commandline
options have changed.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: storebackup is a backup utility that stores files on other disks.
It includes several optimizations that reduce the disk space needed and
improve performance, and unifies the advantages of traditional full and
incremental backups. It includes tools for analyzing backup data and
restoring. Once archived, files are accessible by mounting filesystems
(locally, or via Samba or NFS). It is easy to install and configure.
Changes: This release corrects the fact that the exception list was not
taken into account when checking collisions from the options -t and -s. In
some rare cases, internal linkage of duplicated files was not working. It
also adds the possibility of defining a bandwidth limit when copying, and
the new parameter --postcommand.

"Debian on CD" project, which means that its use is not limited to a
rescue CD; it is also possible to install a whole Debian system on CD.
Changes: The linuxrc script was cleaned up, the size of the initrd now
defaults to 256k, _initrdfs.small was added (which is only 40k), the
initrd is now a gzipped cramfs image, and cloop support was added.

Internet
Security
About: Wellenreiter is a GTK/Perl wireless network discovery and auditing
tool. Prism2, Lucent, and Cisco based cards are supported. It is the
easiest to use Linux scanning tool. No card configuration has to be done
anymore. The whole look and feel is pretty self-explaining. It can
discover networks (BSS/IBSS), and detects ESSID broadcasting or
non-broadcasting networks and their WEP capabilities and the manufacturer
automatically. DHCP and ARP traffic are decoded and displayed to give you
further information about the networks. An ethereal/tcpdump-compatible
dumpfile and an Application savefile will be automaticly created. gpsd can
be used to track the location of the discovered networks.
Changes: A completely new Interface and look and feel were added. All the
statistic windows are removed. The scannerwindow is now the mainwindow and
controlpoint. Autodetection of the cardtype and other configuration
setting eliminates the need for user configuration. The usability of the
interface has been raised with the new tree and clist split layout. save-
and dumpfile generation was automated. Scanning is faster, and a lot of
bugs and leaks were fixed.
