  by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 10:01

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Arno's IPTABLES firewall script was originally derived from Seven's
(single-homed) IPTABLES script. The biggest differences are that this
script has support for dual-homed machines, support for masquerading
(NAT), support for ethernet ADSL/DSL modems (for both static and
dynamically assigned IPs), support for all IP protocols, and support for
VPNs like IPSEC (Freeswan). It also features (stealth) portscan detection,
extensive user definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log
flooding, port forwarding, optimizing the throughput of your internet
connection, protection against SYN/ICMP flooding (DoS attacks), support
for UPnP, and much more. It's easy to configure and highly customizable.
It additionally includes a filter script (fwfilter) to make your firewall
log more readable.

Changes: Support for PPPoA connections has been fixed. There is better
compatibility with FreeSWAN. The variable $OTHER_IF has been renamed to
$TRUSTED_IF. There is a new variable $FIREWALL_LOG to specify the log file
location. There are fwfilter cosmetic fixes/changes, and awk binary lookup
for Debian has been fixed.

[021] - db-backed 1.0c
  by tschroed (http://freshmeat.net/users/tschroed/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 09:57

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules

About: db-backed is a Ruby library providing a convenient mechanism for
describing objects bound to a backing database. This relieves the
programmer from much of the tedium associated with writing programs with
DB access. Instead of spending a lot of time working on code that reads
data from the database, code that stuffs it into useable objects,
remembering whether a particular piece of data lives in the database or
not, etc., db-backed allows the programmer to simply design their
database schema (with a few constraints), and write a very simple class
definition which describes the mapping between database fields, class
methods, and foreign key mappings.

Changes: This version adds the ability to have DB backed classes in
separate namespaces (modules). Foo::Bar will be properly trimmed to Bar.

[022] - Dnsmasq 1.12
  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 18:12

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder designed to
provide DNS (domain name) services to a small network where using BIND
would be overkill. It can have its upstream DNS servers automatically
configured by PPP or DHCP, and it can serve the names of local machines
which are not in the global DNS. It can integrate with the ISC DHCP daemon
to serve the names of local machines which are configured using DHCP.
Dnsmasq is ideal for networks behind NAT routers and connected via modem,
ISDN, ADSL, or cable-modem connections.

Changes: Improved behaviour in the face of server loops or gross overload,
more flexible configuration, a new build for Linux lbc5, and extra debug
logging.

[031] - Foomatic 3.0.0rc2 (Development)
  by Till Kamppeter (http://freshmeat.net/users/tillkamppeter/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 19:16

Printing
Utilities

About: Foomatic is the printer/driver database of Linuxprinting.org. The
XML-based system integrates free software printer drivers with all common
spoolers (CUPS, LPRng, LPD, GNUlpr, PPR, PDQ, CPS, etc.) in UNIX. It
generates printer/driver description files which, together with
spooler-specific filter scripts, allow easy setup of print queues with
access to all driver options. Foomatic ships with every major Linux distro
and its Web site is used as a reference by vendors. It is an up-to-date
and distribution-independent repository of printer and driver data,
scripts, and utilities, accompanied by the wealth of knowledge, tips and
tricks, solutions, and enlightenment provided by its newsgroups.

Changes: The string and password options introduced in Foomatic 3.0.0rc1
had a security bug: Users could enter arbitrary characters and so they
could run arbitrary commands as the special user of the spooler. This
release solves this problem by the possibility to give a list of allowed
characters and/or a regular expression in the Foomatic data and the
strings entered by the users have to match these.

About: NemeinAuthentication is a PHP session-based authentication library
for Midgard sites and applications. It can be used for adding easy and
secure authentication for Midgard-based Web services, and also includes
utilities for handling password complexity checking against imported
libraries. The module ships with an imported English library.

Changes: The library was changed to store the session data in a global
variable as well. This makes hack_auth_session() obsolete, since
authentication after output has already started. As a side effect, this
should also allow using a session save handler other than file.

[073] - plan 1.8.6
  by Yann Dirson (http://freshmeat.net/users/ydirson/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 06:17

[075] - PLplot 5.2.1 (Stable)
  by Rafael Laboissiere (http://freshmeat.net/users/rlaboiss/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 18:47

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: PLplot is a library of C functions that are useful for making
scientific plots from programs written in C, C++, Fortran, Octave, Python,
and Tcl/Tk. It can be used to create standard x-y plots, semi-log plots,
log-log plots, contour plots, 3D plots, shade (gray-scale and color)
plots, mesh plots, bar charts, and pie charts. Multiple graphs (of the
same or different sizes) may be placed on a single page with multiple
lines in each graph. Different line styles, widths, and colors are
supported. A virtually infinite number of distinct area fill patterns may
be used. There are almost 1,000 characters in the extended character set,
including four different fonts, the Greek alphabet, and a host of
mathematical, musical, and other symbols. The fonts can be scaled to any
desired size. A variety of output devices and file formats are supported,
including a metafile format which can be subsequently rendered to any
device/file. New devices and file formats can be easily added by writing a
driver routine.

Changes: Two new functions were added to the library API: plsmem and
plgriddata (this one allows 3D plots of irregularly sampled data). The
configuration scheme has been improved and many bugs have been fixed.

[077] - popsneaker 0.6.2 (Patches)
  by Heiko Schaefer (http://freshmeat.net/users/burmagroup/)
  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 18:09

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: Popsneaker is a mailfilter for remote filtering of POP3 email
accounts. It is mostly useful for computers which have a dial-in
connection to the internet. You can define rules to select emails, which
you don't want to download to your local box. This is a simple and
effective way to get rid of spam, advertisings and other kinds of unwanted
mail. The filter rules are very flexible and powerful, but still easy to
handle. The main ruletypes are using regular expressions to deny, to
accept or to make an assumption on the mail.

Changes: Many new features were added with this patch, including a
spamresponder script for responding to SPAM by analyzing the
popsneaker.log, a mailpopsneakerlog script to mail the popsneaker.log, and
a mkspamlist script to analyze a Netscape/Mozilla mailbox and to make a
SPAM sender list suitable for both popsneaker and popsneakerconfig
(Import). A fix was made for the annoying fetchmail message that said
popsneaker failed (it actually didn't fail, but comunicated in a wrong way
with fetchmail). Support was also added for zlib (compressed
popsneakerrc-Files) and for a statically-linked tcp4u library.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML

About: PyHtmlTable is a class for Python CGIs to generate HTML tables on
the fly. It allows you to set individual row and cell attributes via
arbitrary dictionaries, and span rows and columns. It autogrows the table
if cells are set outside its initial range. It allows dynamic insertion of
new rows and columns anywhere in the table, and allows bulk population of
table data via arrays to arbitrary locations in the table. It also
provides default cell attributes for tablewide uniformity and the ability
to override these on a cell-by-cell basis.

Changes: Minor enhancements and some minor bugfixes were made. Shortcuts
were added to method names, and more graceful handling of Null inserts
into the table was added.

[083] - Runabout 1.3.0

  Tuesday, April 22nd 2003 01:03

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The Runabout is an extension of the Java libraries that adds
two-argument multi-dispatch to Java without changing the language or the
VM. It uses reflection to find visit methods, which are invoked using
dynamically generated and loaded code. The Runabout does not need a
special compiler or changes to Java's syntax. Dispatch with the Runabout
is fairly fast, typcially a factor of two to ten slower than double
dispatch. It can be use to make the code faster and more readable, for
example in instances where a sequence of instanceOf tests can not be
refactored using visitors.

Changes: Ambiguous resolutions due to multiple matching interfaces are now
detected and cause a run-time exception. Visits to primitive types now
fall back to visit(Object) by default on the boxed values if the primitive
visit methods are not redefined. Minor code cleanups were also made.

[094] - Tiger security tool 3.2

About: TIGER is a set of Bourne shell scripts, C programs, and data files
which are used to perform a security audit of Unix systems. The security
audit results are useful both for system analysis (security auditing) and
for real-time, host-based intrusion detection.

Changes: This new release features a number of bug fixes and enhancements.
Eleven new checks have been added (four are still beta). New and improved
documentation is provided. An 'ignore' mechanism (similar to logcheck's)
has been implemented to make it easier to create OS baselines. This
permits some OS providers (such as Debian) to provide Tiger with a
baseline OS, where security warnings that are irrelevant are removed. This
also allows security administrators to tailor the baseline according to
