  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 11:31

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: BabelKit is an interface to a universal multilingual database code
table. It takes all of the programming work out of maintaining multiple
database code definition sets in multiple languages. The code
administration and translation page lets developers define new virtual
code tables, new languages, enter all codes and their descriptions, and
then translate them into all languages of interest. Perl and PHP classes
retrieve the code descriptions and automatically generate HTML code
selection elements in the user's language. This makes internationalization
and localization of Web sites and database interfaces much easier.

Changes: You can now pass in HTML select options such as
'onchange="submit()"'. The PHP version now supports ADODB in addition to
PEAR and phplib. Improved documentation and setup instructions are now
available. This release is distributed in zip as well as tgz format. The
homepage now contains live multilanguage demos.

  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 01:43

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Archiving

About: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs with a
CDR/CDRW recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. It
supports CD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc- and
ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features include
IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed
CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), TAO, DAO, RAW, and
human-readable error messages. cdrtools includes remote SCSI support and
can access local or remote CD writers.

Changes: In this version, grace time handling was restructured. There are
massive changes needed for a MMC-3 framework to support DVD+RW and DVD+R,
better error messages from main write loop, and warnings for the user if
writing fails because of a non-blank preformatted media. A bug in
multi-session handling indroduced recently with driver restructuring was
fixed, the Plextor PowerRec speed info was moved past writing, and
mkisofs now creates a XA "CD-XA001" signature in PVD with -XA or -xa.

[016] - devlabel 0.36.06
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 13:07

System :: Filesystems
Utilities

About: Devlabel is a program which dynamically creates symbolic links to
disk/partition names. It uses the disk's and/or partition's unique
identifiers to keep the symlink pointed to the correct location even if
the underlying partition's name has changed. So, regardless of whether
/dev/sdb6 becomes /dev/sdc6, devlabel figures this all out and points the
symlink to the correct data.

Changes: For partitions which don't return partition UUIDs and instead
rely on the UUID of its disk, this release tacks the start sector of the
partition onto the end of the UUID. This makes all UUIDs absolutely
unique, which means it can now handle all interdisk renaming events
regardless of what UUID type is returned by a partition. Because of this,
much code cleanup including getting rid of the now unneeded --partnum
option.

  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 18:54

Database
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libinterbase++ is just a thin C++ encapsulation layer on top of the
original Interbase/Firebird C API. It provides support for databases
(attach, detach, and get information about them), transactions (start,
end, and control a transaction context), and tatements and queries (run
SQL statements against a database). The library itself does not add any
extra features not found in the original APIs; it should be quite fast,
efficient and flexible. It has a very limited footprint in terms of binary
size, so it's also suitable for CGI programming or little applications.

Changes: This release adds a changelog, "#pragma warn" in xsqlda.cpp to
make Borland C++ Builder happy, and namespace fixes. It doesn't use
LNKFLAGS, but uses LDFLAGS instead.

[055] - PEAR MDB 1.1.2 (Stable)
  by Lukas Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/dybvandal/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 18:52

Database

About: PEAR MDB is a merge of the PEAR DB and Metabase PHP database
abstraction layers. It provides a common API for all RDBMS. It features
data type abstraction, various fetch modes, emulation for sequences,
replace, prepare/execute, row limit, support for LOBs, transactions,
XML-based schema management, the PEAR framework, and wrappers for both
PEAR DB and Metabase.

Changes: This is mainly a bugfix release. Four new drivers have been added
(Oracle, Frontbase, Interbase, and Firebird). All get*Value() methods
(except get*lobValue() for now) now convert a PHP NULL into an SQL NULL
(resulting in API changes in the NULL handling of the get*Value() and
replace() methods). REPLACE emulation now works in a way more similar to
how MySQL's REPLACE works. The code has been moved out of the constructors
that would attempt to return error objects. PostgreSQL reverse engineering
has been partly implemented. The MDB_Date classes now behave in a way more
similar to PEAR::Date (especially in regards to daylight savings time).

fixed now. Bare period encoding has been fixed (it wasn't working right in
some rare cases). HTML detection has changed to require the "html" tag to
be at the beginning of a line. Otherwise any email with this tag in the
message would get sent as an HTML message.

Text Processing :: Markup :: SGML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: sgml2x is a script designed to help applying a DSSSL stylesheet to
an SGML or XML document. It has a couple of interesting features, such as
multiple possible stylesheets per document class, easy integration of new
stylesheets by adding a simple new definition file in a configuration
directory (system-wide, per-user, or per-project), and automatic selection
of a default stylesheet to be used. It is already set up for DocBook
SGML/XML.

Changes: This version fixes a bug introduced in 0.99.9 that prevented
specification of a local stylesheet on command-line.

[064] - SMS Server Tools 1.10.3
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 13:12

Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools were made to send and receive SMS from one or
many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some sample
scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification.

Changes: The output method of statusmonitor has been changed to allow
redirection to shell scripts or into files.

[069] - tvmet 1.0.1 (Stable)
  by Olaf Petzold (http://freshmeat.net/users/opetzold/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 01:05

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development

About: This Tiny Vector and Matrix template library uses Meta Templates
and Expression Templates (ET) to evaluate results at compile time, thus
making it fast for low-end systems. Temporaries are avoided because of
this. The produced code is similar to hand-coded code, but the quality of
the code still depends on the compiler and its version. The dimensions for
vectors and matrices are static and bounded at compile time using template
arguments.

Changes: This release is a fix for links inside docs and m4 macro
processor files (tvmet.m4).

[075] - XDM-Choose 1.2.0
  by Fred Barnes (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuked/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 05:58

Utilities

About: XDM-Choose is a replacement chooser for XDM, which presents a
slightly more user-friendly interface than the default chooser. It allows
the user to type in a host name, then either query the host (to see if it
is up and accepting), or connect to the host. The majority of options are
configurable via the conf file (xdmchoose.conf). A small utility "xdmping"
comes with it, which allows a command-line probe of an XDM host's
willingness to manage a session.

Changes: This version adds a drop-down host-list (optional), and typing
can also be disabled if desired. Command-line handling for xdmchooser was
improved. There is more graceful window-manager interaction (when running
in a real environment), and some man pages were added.

[076] - XML for SCRIPT 2.1
  by David Joham (http://freshmeat.net/users/djoham/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 01:00

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: XML for SCRIPT is a simple, non-validating XML DOM and SAX parser
written in JavaScript. It was designed to help Web application designers
implement cross-platform, client-side manipulation of XML data without
having to resort to proprietary platform-limiting solutions. It includes
extensive documentation on both its DOM and SAX parsers as well as a host
of tools, sample applications, and test suites to aid in developing
applications based on its technology.

Changes: DOM tagPath searching has been added allowing Javascript
programmers to query the DOM in a manner much like CSS selectors. Loading
and manipulating of XML data from any domain on the Web is now supported
via the xmlIOProxyLoadData functions and server-side proxies. Support for
Apple's Safari browser has been added, along with support for Opera 7 and
 Internet Explorer 5.2 for Mac OS X.

  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Wednesday, April 23rd 2003 19:01

System :: Monitoring

About: xps dynamically displays in an X Window the Unix processes as a
tree or forest, the roots on the left and the leaf processes on the right.
The status of each process (running, sleeping, stopped, etc.) can be
indicated by a color. Different users appear as different colors. Process
selection can be made per user, all users or through a regular expression
pattern. A process can be selected to show ps information or to send the
process a signal.

Changes: Minor small improvements requested by users have been added. Some
changes have been made to make autoheader shut up with its warnings. Help
headers files are now included.
