by Andy (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajg/)
Friday, April 25th 2003 18:09
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: AGT is a powerful console frontend to iptables, supporting nearly
all of the iptables extensions (such as quota, random, MIRROR, multiport,
owner, string, MAC address, and more). All options can be specified in a
configuration file with similar syntax to 'ipf' and 'ipfw'.
Changes: A particularly nasty bug caused output rules to have the
interface 'direction' incorrectly specified. This has been resolved.

[004] - Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module 1.5
by Jonathan A. Zdziarski (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
Friday, April 25th 2003 12:51
Security
About: The Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module is a module for Apache 1.3
that provides functionality for detecting and fighting off DoS attacks and
brute force attacks. It does this by adding addresses to a 10-second '403
List' and rejecting rapidly repeated requests for the same URL from the
same addresses, using an internal hash table, on a per-child basis. This
module can be configured to talk to ipchains, ipfilter, or any other tool
designed to push the attack out to the network layer, and provides email
notification in the event of an attack.
Changes: Changes include the addition of automated email notifications and
configurable system commands (for executing a tool to control an IP filter
or talk to a router). The makefile has been cleaned up to compile better
on some operating systems.

System :: Monitoring
About: Epylog is a log notifier and parser that periodically tails system
logs on Unix systems, parses the output in order to present it in an

systems log to a single loghost using syslog or syslog-ng. Although Epylog
can be used on standalone systems, other packages (like logwatch) are
probably better suited for such purposes.

About: GWC is an application to do digital audio restoration on wavfile
data, i.e. remove hisses and clicks. It features click repair using least
squares autoregressive interpolation, and is based on the FFTW library.
This is still beta code, so back up your data files first.
Changes: Some configuration problems were fixed along with a problem with
the "Detect only" checkbox, which would toggle on/off every time you hit
the spacebar after checking it. Click detection speed was enhanced, and
cdrdao.toc is printed. The Hanning-overlap-add windowing method was added
for denoising, which seems better than the Lorber-Hoeldrich denoising
method and is significantly faster. A bug in the Lorber-Hoeldrich was also
fixed. The configure script now checks for the correct version of
libsndfile, and gwc includes an MP3 output option.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: JaxMe is a Java/XML binding framework based on SAX2. It consists of
a set of code generators that read an XML schema and generate code for
parsing conformant XML documents into corresponding Java objects, saving
those objects into a database or, vice versa, reading such Java objects
from a database and converting them into XML. JaxMe supports namespaces,
relational databases, and Tamino. JaxMe comes with an integrated
application framework and a generator for EJB entity beans with BMP (bean
managed persistence).
Changes: Basic support was added for several important XML schema
components: Simpletype facets (xs:maxLength, xs:minLength, xs:enumeration,
xs:pattern), Schema include (xs:include), and xs:anyType. BLOB and CLOB
handling was also introduced when working with relational database
engines.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Libxml is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way.
To some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, SAX, and
DocBook SGML. Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes
xmllint, a command line XML validator.
Changes: Relax-NG streaming validation, large file support, thread support
by default, performance and low memory handling work, xmlReader to DOM
extensions, and some bugfixes.

[049] - Mesh Viewer 0.2.0
by Helmut Cantzler (http://freshmeat.net/users/cantzler/)
Friday, April 25th 2003 05:41
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: The Mesh Viewer is an easy to use lightweight application to
display triangular meshes from a variety of file formats. It uses the
OpenGL API to render the models. Triangular meshes can be displayed
texture mapped (optional with bilinear filtering), solid, or as a skeleton
(full or just the front lines). The surface normals of the triangles can
optionally be displayed. Loaded models can be rotated, translated, and
scaled (all done with the mouse). The model is lighted by multiple light
sources. Viewpoints can be saved. Screenshots of the model can be taken
(as BMP, JPEG, PNG, etc.).
Changes: This release adds the ability to pick individual vertices and
triangles to display their 3D coordinates, a customizable background
color, and several small fixes and minor changes. The model now keeps the
aspect ratio after resizing the main window.

Security
About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to protect
Windows clients from viruses. However, it can do many other kinds of mail
processing, such as replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding
boilerplate disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts
of a MIME message according to a very flexible configuration file. It can
also bounce messages with unacceptable attachments. MIMEDefang works with
Sendmail 8.11/8.12's new "Milter" API, which makes it more flexible and
efficient than procmail-based approaches.
Changes: This release retains only the first Content-Type header if there
are more than one, because multiple Content-Type headers can be used to
evade certain types of scanning. It cleans up temporary working
directories sooner, and you can now set the "syslog" facility (instead of
always using "mail".) mimedefang.pl adds a Received header when re-mailing
messages.

IRC events, flood protection, DCC support, ident support, and more. Its
comprehensive logfile format is suitable for use with pisg to generate
channel statistics. Full documentation is included, and the Web site
contains a 5-minute step-by-step guide to making your first IRC bot.
Changes: This release introduces internationalisation. It is now possible
(using the setEncoding method) to specify the charset that will be used
when messages are sent to IRC servers, e.g., "GB2312" for Chinese
encoding. The JVM's default encoding is otherwise used.

[063] - pretendroot 0.6
by egmont (http://freshmeat.net/users/egmont/)
Friday, April 25th 2003 10:21
About: Pretendroot is an LD_PRELOAD library which overrides some glibc
calls, pretending you are root while doing file system operations. The
main difference from Debian's fakeroot is that no daemons or other
processes are involved, fake ownership and group are stored on the file
system, and not in memory, hence it can survive even reboots. This library
has been successfully used when building packages for the UHU-Linux
distribution. All of its applications are compiled and installed as an
unprivileged user. However, there's no need to patch Makefiles; commands
such as "install -o root -g mail thisfile ${DESTDIR}/here" work perfectly,
and the final packages will have the desired ownership and group.
Changes: A global variable that could cause race conditions for
multi-threaded apps has been eliminated. Files that contain the fake
ownership were sometimes created with world writable permissions.

[069] - runit 0.9.0
by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
Friday, April 25th 2003 01:19
System :: Boot :: Init
About: runit is a daemontools alike replacement for SysV-init and other
init schemes. It currently runs on GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and can
easily be adapted to other Unix operating systems. runit implements a
simple three-stage concept. Stage 1 performs the system's one-time
initialization tasks. Stage 2 starts the system's uptime services (via the
runsvdir program). Stage 3 handles the tasks necessary to shutdown and
halt or reboot.
Changes: A svlogd tool was added, which is a service logging daemon
designed to be run from log/run files, similar to multilog. The runsvdir
program no longer propagates the TERM signal to the runsv processes if it
receives one but exits immediately, and runsvdir now supports handling of
the HANGUP signal. svwaitdown now also sends the 'down' command to the
services it works on. More run scripts were included.

Friday, April 25th 2003 01:28
Multimedia :: Video
Multimedia :: Video :: Capture
Multimedia :: Video :: Display
About: ZoneMinder is a suite of applications intended for use in video
camera security applications, including theft prevention and child or
family member monitoring. It supports capture, analysis, recording, and
monitoring of video data coming from one or more cameras attached to a
Linux system. It also features a user-friendly Web interface which allows
viewing, archival, review, and deletion of images and movies captured by
the cameras. The image analysis system is highly configurable, permitting
retention of specific events, while eliminating false positives.
ZoneMinder supports both directly connected and network cameras and is
built around the definition of a set of individual 'zones' of varying
sensitivity and functionality for each camera. This allows the elimination
of regions which should be ignored or the definition of areas which will
alarm if various thresholds are exceeded in conjunction with other zones.
All management, control, and other functions are supported through the Web
interface.
Changes: This version added support for cameras that use the YUV420P
palette, such as Phillips webcams. The ffmpeg video encoder can now be
used to greatly enhance MPEG generation. A new Preclusive zone type was
added to assist in counter false alarms. Many other lesser enhancements
and bugfixes were also made.
