Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: Ashpool is a lightweight XML Database written in Java. Its goal is
to use standard SQL92 syntax to query, add, update, and delete XML
documents that hold to a table like structure.
Changes: This release supports all basic SQL commands (joins are not
supported--you can create/query as many documents as you'd like one at a
time). Some JDBC fixes and an overall speed increase are also included.
Sub-selects mostly work (for production don't count on them), and there
are quite a few functions that can be used in the column specification
section of the sql statement (count(), sum(), year(), now(), etc.). The AS
keyword now works.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Astaro Security Linux is a firewall solution. It does stateful
packet inspection filtering, content filtering, user authentication, virus
scanning, spam protection, VPN with IPSec (PKI for X.509 certificates) and
PPTP, Wireless LAN, VLAN, PPPoE, PPPoA, and much more. With its Web-based
management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability to pull updates via the
Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based on a special hardened
Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are running in change-roots and
are protected by kernel capabilities.
Changes: This Up2Date fixes a SMTP partition overflow which could occur
while virus scanning.

[014] - cgdb 0.3.1
by Robert Rossi (http://freshmeat.net/users/bobbybrasko/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 20:41
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: cgdb is a lightweight, but fully functional curses frontend to gdb.
The goal of cgdb is to be lightweight and responsive, not encumbered with
unnecessary features. The interface retains the familiar GDB text-based
interface with 100% of the original functionality. The interfaces also
provide additional features, such as a source code window, shortcut keys,
visual setting of breakpoints, regex searching capabilities, and more.
Changes: This release only installs cgdb now instead of the driver
programs. It also no longer depends on rlctx_prog to run, and the source
tree has been completely redone.

[015] - cgipaf 1.3.0pre3 (Development)
by staf (http://freshmeat.net/users/stafwag/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 09:57
Communications :: Email
About: cgipaf is a combination of three CGI programs. passwd.cgi, which
allow users to update their password, viewmailcfg.cgi, which allows users
to view their current mail configuration, and mailcfg.cgi, which updates
the mail configuration. All programs use PAM for user authentication. It
is possible to run a script to update SAMBA passwords or NIS configuration
when a password is changed. mailcfg.cgi creates a .procmailrc in the
user's home directory. A user with too many invalid logins can be locked.
The minimum and maximum UID can be set in the configuration file, so you
can specify a range of UIDs that are allowed to use cgipaf.
Changes: This release re-enables smbpasswd support, which was broken in
the previous release.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
About: Dovecot is an IMAP server whose major goals are security and
extreme reliability. It uses index files to optimally store the mailbox
state, which makes it very fast even with huge mailboxes. Indexes won't
prevent external mailbox updates, so Dovecot is still fully compatible
with standard Maildir and mbox formats. There's also a fully featured POP3
server included.

[019] - DRT 0.2.9
by Amir Michail (http://freshmeat.net/users/amir/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 20:36
Software Development
About: DRT is a design recovery tool for interactive graphical
applications running under the X Window System. The tool automatically
captures actions performed while using such an application. Functions
particularly relevant to each action are highlighted. Moreover, the action
itself is described visually from fragments of the application display.
One can search and browse these actions to learn about the design of an
application.
Changes: Dramatic speedups in action detection, load, and save were made.
DRT memory usage has gone down significantly and DRT demo files are now
much smaller. Some sequence diagram improvements were made, like better
focusing on those parts of the diagram that are of particular relevance to
the action in question, and the "more" and "less" buttons now also zoom in
and out. An AbiWord template was also added.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
SPAM using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning Anti-Spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.5% success rate with only 0.03%
chance of false positives.
Changes: Base64 decoding of text and HTML segments (to catch encoded
spams), a button for the exceptionally rare false positive from a
quarantine box, and filtering of short HTML comments (used to frequently
break up words in spams) were all added. CGI code was cleaned up, fixing a
few bad redirects to index.cgi. DSPAM statistics were added to CGI. The
DSPAM signature, pasted onto every email with reversal information, was
changed to a base64-encoded, delimited signature similar to a PGP or cert
signature. Old reversal information is automatically stripped from
replied-to email (it does not strip quoted).

About: dview is an X11 image viewer capable of displaying very large
(tested with 21600 x 21600) uncompressed RGB images (like most BMP, Targa,
and TIFF images) without loading them into memory, so very little memory
is required to view even very large images. It features interactive
zooming and panning around the image with a nice little statusbar. Even
though this is not typical for a simple image viewer, it requires OpenGL
and Glut. dview is not an everyday vanilla image viewer. It is best suited
for very large images which cannot be viewed by other viewers, such as
astronomical imagery.

Monday, April 28th 2003 06:38
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
About: elmo is an efficient console mail user agent. It supports POP3 and
SMTP, uses the Maildir storage format, and sends 8-bit MIME messages
regardless of the server's ehlo response (although it is able to decode qp
and base64 encodings). Additionally, when replying to email, elmo makes an
attempt to determine the sex of the person being quoted so that it can
choose the appropriate words to use in the quote's attribution.
Changes: gettext support and bayesian anti-spam filters were added.
Multiple mailboxes are now supported, and the mbox module was fixed. Many
improvements were made, including faster hash-tables, mail fetching, and

[031] - Gnometab 0.7.4
by Bill Guelker (http://freshmeat.net/users/wguelker/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 10:21
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
About: Gnometab aims to be a WYSIWYG guitar tablature editor. Its features
include copying and pasting of tablature passages, a chord library (which
the user must fill), the ability to create a variety of tablature symbols
specific to the guitar, and clean-looking printed output. It does not
attempt to be "smart", i.e. it does not know how many beats are in a
measure, nor does it know an E chord from an Am chord. Instead, the
emphasis has been on the appearance of the output.
Changes: This release adds a default pointer tool and menu accelerators
for all tools. It maintains a "Recent Files" list in the "File" menu. It
uses libgnomeprint-2.2. The chord builder has been slightly overhauled,
and chord builder objects now have a right-click popup menu, consistent
with regular tab objects. Several pesky bugs have been exterminated.

authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and
can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP, TCP, or SMTP
messages. GNUnet supports accounting to provide contributing nodes with
better service. The primary service build on top of the framework is
anonymous file sharing.
Changes: The database for content storage was rewritten and now supports
gdbm, MySQL, tdb, bdb, and plain directories for backends. The new
storage system also breaks the 8 GB limit on shared content per peer. A
new tool to delete content from the local peer was added. The

Security :: Cryptography
About: Gringotts is a small utility that allows you to jot down sensitive
data (passwords, PINs, small files, etc.) in an easy-to-read,
easy-to-access, and most of all very secure form. Gringotts makes use of
GTK+ 2 for the user interface, and lets the user choose from among eight
strong encryption algorithms (RIJNDAEL-128, RIJNDAEL-256, SERPENT,
TWOFISH, CAST-256, SAFER+, LOKI97, 3DES), two hashing algorithms (SHA1,
RIPEMD 160) and two compression techniques (ZLib and BZip2) with four
compression ratios. Moreover, it allows the user to use any file or an
entire floppy disk as a password, as an alternative to the usual text
string, giving additional choices.
Changes: This version has been adapted to build flawlessly under
libGringotts 1.2.1, adds an --enable-attach-limit configure flag to
enable/disable the 2Mb attachment limit, and makes small fixes to the

[038] - Java Serialization to XML 2 2.0.9.2
by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 07:10
Communications
Database
Database :: Front-Ends
About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.
Changes: JSX is now complete. All objects can now be serialized,
including all classes from standard Java packages, third-party classes,
and future versions of those. JSX does this by exactly emulating the
serialization API that all objects follow if they are serializable.
Specifically, this release implements the last three parts of this API.
readObjectNoData() and available() have been implemented, and Proxy
objects can be serialized and deserialized (as well as the dynamically
created Class object for a Proxy).

[063] - Moosic 1.4
by Daniel Pearson (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpearson/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 20:57
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: Moosic is a music player that focuses on easy playlist management.
It consists of a server process that maintains a queue of music files to
play and a client program which sends commands to the server. The server
continually runs through its playlist, popping items off the top of the
list and playing each with an external program. The client is a simple
command-line utility which allows you to perform powerful operations upon
the server's queue, including the addition of whole directory trees,
automatic shuffling, and item removal according to regular expressions.
The server comes configured to play MP3, Ogg, MIDI, MOD, and WAV files.
Changes: The server now communicates with clients via the XML-RPC
protocol, and the server's API has been properly documented (see
Moosic_API.txt). Writing your own client for the Moosic server in the
programming language of your choice should now be quite easy. Python
version 2.2 or higher is now required. A few command aliases were added
("pre", "del", and "status"). moosicd now cleans up stale socket files
automatically at startup, saving you the trouble of having to do it by
hand. The server log now mentions the priority of each logged message.
Many tiny bugs were fixed in various places.

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration
About: phpQLAdmin was designed to administrate a Qmail-LDAP server with an
easy-to-use Web interface. It allows you to control the server with the
Qmail-LDAP/Controls patch, add/remove domains, add/remove/edit users,
change attributes for all domain members, and set passwords, quotas,
mailhosts, mail addresses, alias addresses, forwarders, and more. The
application's language is configurable (except for the control part) and
contains translations for English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish,
and Japanese. It supports Ezmlm mailing lists.
Changes: The checking for { and } (password scheme) was moved to
standalone to make absolutely sure that it's invoked. If a configuration
option in LDAP is empty, an attempt to DELETE one value resulted in a
failure. A branches which is dc, o, or ou organized can now be without a
dot. The minimum [UG]ID number for user creation can now be modified
(schema updated). A user can now be added to the 'super admin list' (thus
giving permission to create branches). A new type of account was added,
called "shell". This is like the System account type, but without the
mail features.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
System :: Monitoring
About: The Prelude Library is a collection of generic functions providing
communication between the Prelude Hybrid IDS suite's components. It
provides a convenient interface for sending alerts to Prelude Manager with
transparent SSL, failover and replication support, asynchronous events and
timer interfaces, an abstracted configuration API (hooking at the
commandline, the configuration line, or wide configuration, available from
the Manager), and a generic plugin API. It allows you to easily turn your
favorite security program into a Prelude sensor.
Changes: Compilation fixes were made for Solaris and OpenSSL 0.9.7. A
possible crash was fixed for clients that don't use prelude-getopt. A
priority problem that could lead the configuration engine to crash was
fixed. A bug where option would not be printed if the shortoption flag was
not set and a possible NULL strcmp was fixed. Stdin/stdout/stderr are
closed when the client requires it to start as a daemon. Arbitrary-length
certificates work correctly, and a possible sensor-adduser crash was
fixed.

opens local UNIX domain socket, and waits for someone to connect and
instructs it which path to scan. Since the database is loaded in RAM,
scanning is very fast. (Note: speed of scanning also depends on SAVI
settings and size of the file.) It works on Linux, Solaris (Sparc/x86),
HP-UX, and FreeBSD.

[104] - WANPIPE beta6-2.3.0 (Beta)
by Nenad Corbic (http://freshmeat.net/users/ncorbic/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 10:37
Communications
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System
About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.
Changes: This release adds an ATM firmware update (Beta5 had old,
non-working firmware), a Frame Relay bugfix from Beta4, an ADSL protocol
update (ADSL is now much more stable over noisy lines), a new PPPoA
design, and new SNMP MIBS for T1/E1/56 frontends.

by BOOMERANG (http://freshmeat.net/users/boomerang/)
Monday, April 28th 2003 07:41
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: Worker is a file-manager exclusive for X based on the famous
filemanager "DirectoryOpus" on the AmigaOS. It is configurable on the fly

the GUI, including a button and a hotkey. Worker uses real
file-recognition on file-content AND/OR file-ending, where each file-type
can get an own action.
Changes: This release supports large files (>=2GB), and the "create
symlink" function was improved. Worker can now use ImageMagick for
embedded image preview. A security problem with directory creation was
fixed, and the SUID/SGID bit will be restored correctly now for file
copy. A Russian catalog was added, and it compiles with Cygwin. Some
small improvements and a few bug fixes were made.
