[014] - Code striker 1.7.1.2

  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 04:20

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
proposed diff in colored-diff mode, and can also view the original and new
files that comprise the review in their entirety when Codestriker is
linked with CVS or Subversion. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

Changes: A "project" concept was introduced. Each code review topic is now
associated with a project, which assists with filtering topics in large
scale deployments. A CVS pserver repository type was added so that reviews
can be linked to remote CVS repositories. Reviews can now be created by
entering in a start tag, end tag, and module name in addition to uploading
a diff/patch file. DOS-formatted text is handled correctly, a bug with
text searches over comment text was fixed, and problems with generating
compressed output streams were fixed.

[023] - DKMS 0.27.05
  by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 13:58

System :: Systems Administration

About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages
since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as
a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Changes: This release adds "mktarball" and "ldtarball", which enables you
to build your modules on one system, run mktarball to create an archive of
the source and built modules, and then run ldtarball on all of your other
systems to place the built modules there. Handling of changing
/etc/modules.conf has been cleaned up. The dkms.conf option
NEEDED_FOR_BOOT has been changed to REMAKE_INITRD, as this is a more
intuitive name. The MODULE_CONF_ALIAS_TYPE option has been added so that
aliases can get added correctly (e.g. ="scsi_hostadapter").

[044] - ipsvd 0.3.4
  by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 07:32

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of "internet protocol service daemons". It includes
daemons for TCP/IP and UDP/IP. An internet protocol service (ipsv) daemon
waits for incoming connections on a socket. For new connections, it
conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the connection. ipsv
daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined instructions on how to
handle incoming connections. It's possible to run different programs, set
a different environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency
limit that depends on the client's address or hostname. ipsvd can be used
to run services usually run by inetd, xinetd, or tcpserver. Normally the
ipsv daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or supervise from the daemontools package.

Changes: With this version, the ipsvd interface supports expiration of
files in an instructions directory. The file is optionally discarded and
removed on an incoming connection that is handled through this file, if
there was no connection attempt through this file within the last
specified number of seconds. The documentation was improved slightly, and
a minor bug in the ipsvd instructions code has been fixed.

About: Obliquid is a PHP/XML application framework for building groupware
Web portals. It is like Lego bricks for the Web. Each brick (called a
slot) is a software component that may be composed with others to build an
Internet application. It has a core allowing users to build pages using
templates blocks, with full multilingual support and themes. It also has a
users/groups/operation module and a calendar supporting availabilities,
calls, meetings, and accountancy entries.

Changes: A new message center module has been introduced to manage the
content and who will receive email messages sent by other modules. A
documentation management module featuring multiple categorizations and
approval has been introduced. This is the first release that doesn't need
PHP 4.2 to run, since PHP 4.1 is enough.

Changes: This release includes a lot of new features, including RecordSet
support for every database with a JDBC driver, EJB Stateless Session Bean
support, JMX Service support, Web Service support for simple data types, a
Pluggable Service Invoker framework, an AdvancedGateway that can be
configured with an XML config file, a few more example flash clients, and
logging with Apache's commons logger. All errors are now sent back in a
NetDebugger compliant format. A new OpenAMF powered web site was created.

[062] - OpenPlugin 0.10
  by Eric Andreychek (http://freshmeat.net/users/andreychek/)
  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 10:35

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: OpenPlugin is an architecture written in Perl which manages plugins
for Web applications. It allows you to incorporate any number of plugins
and drivers into your Web application. For example, the Log plugin has
drivers for logging to STDERR, files, syslog, email, and so on. The
Session plugin has drivers for storing sessions in files, databases, and
the like. Changing drivers is easy; you just change the driver name in a
config file. There are plugins which abstract Apache::Request and CGI.pm,
allowing you to build applications that can work seamlessly under mod_perl
or CGI. If you want to move your application from one environment to
another, you can just change the driver being used in the config file.

Changes: This release should run correctly under Perl 5.8.0. In the
Session plugin, an expired session should now return undef. Support was
added to the Session plugin for a number of Apache::Session drivers in
addition to "File". Support for mod_perl 2.x has been added. The Log
plugin can properly differentiate between callers and act accordingly.
There are many additional changes.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: OpenThought is a powerful and flexible Web application environment.
OpenThought applications are different from other Web applications in that
all communication between the browser and the server is performed in the
background. This gives a browser the ability to receive data from the
server without ever reloading the currently loaded document. Data received
can be displayed automatically on the existing page, can access JavaScript
functions and variables, and can load new pages. Additionally, OpenThought
completely manages all of your session data for you. These features give
the look and feel of a full-blown application instead of just an ordinary
Web page.

Changes: A problem which kept OpenThought from interacting with checkboxes
and radio buttons in some cases was fixed. A test which would fail on
certain systems has now been corrected. The Konqueror Web browser should
now work with OpenThought. Functions have been added which will allow you
to set the title of the application; this previously had to be done
manually. You can now append text to a select list by passing in an array
reference with just two elements. A number of other changes have also been
made.

[065] - Penguin Greetings 0.8.1

  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 07:21

Communications :: Email
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Penguin Greetings is a Perl CGI application to implement Internet
greeting cards on Linux and other Unix-based systems. It includes a
complete ecard Website with 30+ cards for users who want a "plug and play"
ecards solution. It is intended to make ecards more like email by using
multipart MIME email and including message text. The HTML for the cards
and the creation screens are stored in templates so that users can
completely customize the look of the program. Penguin Greetings
incorporates EmbPerl so that full Perl expressions can be incorporated in
to templates for server-side processing. Access to the card creation
functions can be optionally restricted to users in an htpasswd file to
avoid giving world wide access to your server. The emailing function and
data storage are carried out by a separate daemon program which allows for
cards to be mailed on specific dates and improves security and logging.
Extensive documentation is provided as well an example Website that make
full use of the EmbPerl scripting capabilities.

Changes: Penguin Greetings now does all error handling via HTML templates,
so all error messages are completely customizable and the system can be
translated into any language that can be represented in HTML. The CGI
application does no direct interaction with the user that is not mediated
by the HTML template system. There are now over 30 ecards included in the
distribution, including cards for Mothers' day, Cards for solace/sympathy,
and religious cards.

Software Development :: Embedded Systems

About: smalloc (Static memory buffer malloc) is an ideal memory manager
for Realtime Linux Kernel modules that can't use dynamic memory offered by
kmalloc because of the non-realtime nature of kmalloc. Like malloc(),
smalloc() doles out memory to client code. Unlike malloc, however, smalloc
takes a static memory buffer (as an initialization parameter). It is this
buffer that smalloc manages when doling out memory to client code. This
design makes smalloc ideal for use inside a Realtime Linux kernel module.
It also makes it much easire to port userspace code that relies on
malloc() in C or operator new() in C++ for memory management to a realtime
kernel module.

About: SOAP::Clean is a set of modules for quickly and simply deploying
SOAP clients and servers. On the server side, it is intended to enable
legacy, commandline-oriented applications to be made into Web Services
with little or no modification. On the client side, it is intended to make
Web Services look like legacy, commandline-oriented applications. It was
originally developed to provide a framework for computational scientists
to use one another's components without having to download and compile
each other's code. The name comes from the fact that it is designed for
entire XML documents and non-XML files to be embedded within SOAP requests
and responses without losing their integrity. These files are passed
directly to the legacy application on the server and stored directly to
disk on the client. It is not intended for implementing "servlets". In
particular, it makes no attempt to map XML data types into convenient Perl
datatypes, nor does it allow arbitrary Perl functions on the server to be
invoked by SOAP requests.

SAPI (Sophos Anti-Virus Interface), loads virus patterns into memory,
opens local UNIX domain socket, and waits for someone to connect and
instructs it which path to scan. Since the database is loaded in RAM,
scanning is very fast. (Note: speed of scanning also depends on SAVI
settings and size of the file.) It works on Linux, Solaris (Sparc/x86),
HP-UX, and FreeBSD.

Changes: The Red Hat 9/glibc23 "workaround" didn't work, and has been
removed.

[091] - The Demo Effects Collection 0.6
  by W.P. van Paassen (http://freshmeat.net/users/peterpaassen/)
  Tuesday, April 29th 2003 14:08

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: The Demo Effects Collection is a collection of demo effects from
the early days of the demo scene (e.g., the Amiga demo scene).

Changes: The demo plugin system has been extended with functions to pass
effect's parameters to plugins by using a parameter list. This makes it
possible to add effects defined in a database or from a script. Bugs were
fixed and overall functionality was improved. Some simple effect and
filter plugins were added to the PLUGINS directory to demonstrate the ease
of implementing new effects/filters. The MULTILAYER demo showcases all the
new functionality.
