[017] - Cook 2.23
  by Peter Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmiller/)
  Wednesday, April 30th 2003 18:40

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Cook is a tool for constructing files. It is given a set of files
to create, and recipes of how to create them. In any non-trivial program
there will be prerequisites to performing the actions necessary to
creating any file, such as include files. Cook provides a mechanism to
define these. When a program is being developed or maintained, the
programmer will typically change one file of several which comprise the
program. Cook examines the last-modified times of the files to see when
the prerequisites of a file have changed, implying that the file needs to
be recreated as it is logically out of date.

Changes: A build problem with new Bison releases has been fixed.

  by David Roundy (http://freshmeat.net/users/droundy/)
  Wednesday, April 30th 2003 08:28

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS
or arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from
other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully
functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful theory
of patches (the latter being darcs' most important feature).

Changes: A couple of minor bugs introduced in the IO rewrite of version
0.9.7 were fixed. More importantly, a change in the repository format is
planned for the next release. Version 0.9.8 is able to read the new
repository format, providing some degree of backwards compatibility.
Future versions, of course, will continue to be able to read old
repositories.

[028] - Foomatic 3.0.0 (Stable)
  by Till Kamppeter (http://freshmeat.net/users/tillkamppeter/)
  Wednesday, April 30th 2003 17:49

Printing
Utilities

About: Foomatic is the printer/driver database of Linuxprinting.org. The
XML-based system integrates free software printer drivers with all common
spoolers (CUPS, LPRng, LPD, GNUlpr, PPR, PDQ, CPS, etc.) in UNIX. It
generates Adobe-compliant PPD files which, together with the foomatic-rip
filter script, allow easy setup of print queues with access to all driver
options. Foomatic ships with every major Linux distro and its Web site is
used as a reference by vendors. It is an up-to-date and
distribution-independent repository of printer and driver data, scripts,
and utilities, accompanied by the wealth of knowledge, tips and tricks,
solutions, and enlightenment provided by its newsgroups.

Changes: For all spoolers, Adobe-compliant PPD files are used to provide
the printer/driver capability information, and there is also only one
filter for all spoolers (foomatic-rip). The PPD files are fully
Adobe-compliant and do not contain embedded Perl data anymore.
foomatic-rip also supports the use of manufacturer-supplied PPD files for
PostScript printers with all spoolers. Other features are composite
options for pre-defining common configurations, possibility for page-wise
option settings, unprintable margin definitions, custom paper sizes,
option grouping, and more.

About: Gibraltar is a Debian-based router/firewall distribution, fully
workable from a bootable, live CD-ROM. Log files can be stored on a hard

Changes: The major security fix is for pptpd. It has been upgraded to a
new development version that fixes the problem while glibc has been
downgraded to the version available for Debian woody, which has the fix

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: NAT Monitor is a tool to monitor hosts' bandwidth usage in a
Linux-NAT network. A daemon collects data and clients display them
(currently a GTK app with graph and a text version). It detects new hosts,
saves up to 12 hours of data, and has a nice summary statistic.

Changes: There was a major code rewrite, and bugfixes were made.
Natmonitor is now split in a daemon part and some clients, so frontends
can be launched from any user/network machine. Natmonitord also collects
data (last 12 minutes every second and last 12 hours every minute, and
they are saved when daemon quits) and sends it to client on request, so
you can see past history. A console version was also made.

available via the NeoStats Web site or through third party developers.
Currently, NeoStats supports UnrealIRCd, UltimateIRCD, Hybrid7, and
NeoIRCd, with more IRCD support being developed.

Changes: This release adds a lot of new features, including a new logging

[064] - Open3SP 0.0.2 Alpha
  by Lee David Painter (http://freshmeat.net/users/martianx/)
  Wednesday, April 30th 2003 09:12

System :: Systems Administration

About: Open3SP is a system administration framework which provides a
secure administrative infrastructure based on the SSH protocol. The aims
of the project are to establish platform-independent role-based access,
automated configuration, and software/patch deployment. The Open3SP
Framework Server enables the administrator to create a hierarchy of
organizational units/systems and a set of users/roles to enforce access
policy. User access configuration to the SSH servers is automated, with
both OpenSSH and SSH2 standardized server implementations supported. The
server itself is an SSH server and is accessible from any standard SSH
client which supports keyboard-interactive authentication. Once connected,
the Open3SP interactive shell provides commands to manage organizational
units, systems, users, and their roles; additionally, the shell provides
single-sign-on shell access to all the managed systems.

Changes: The latest version of the Open3SP Framework server provides a
number of additional features to help the administrator manage and
configure the SSH network. These include an SFTP server, SSHTools Windows
server support, file system commands with an SFTP client for transfering
files to/from managed systems, shell scripts to automate common tasks with
support for environment variables and user home directories with profile
scripts, and aliases for configuring the users shell.

About: PHP FTP Client is an FTP client that is useful for allowing people
behind a firewall access to FTP without opening the FTP ports inside the
firewall. It could be used as a front end to a local FTP server, and
therefore allow the administrator to provide access to the FTP server only
from localhost.

Changes: This is a complete rewrite of the code. The backend (FTP)
functionality has been greatly improved and added to. The front end has
also been rewritten to look smarter. This version is, however, currently
missing some crucial things the old version had, such as a decent

About: Vesta is an advanced system for source code control, versioning,
configuration management, and building. It is an alternative to CVS+make.
It has a variety of unique features including automatic
language-independent dependency detection, guaranteed repeatability of
builds, and seamless multi-site collaboration.

Changes: Big-endian systems are now supported. Specifically available with
this release are PowerPC Linux and Sparc Linux. A variety of bugs in the
cache server, repository, and evaluator were fixed. The cache server now
uses less memory over the long run. Other minor feature enhancements were
made. libc, libpthread, and libm are now dynamically linked on Linux. The
Boehm garbage collector was updated to version 6.1 on Linux.

About: webCDwriter can be used to make a single CD-writer available to all
users in your network. It consists of the server CDWserver and the clients
webCDcreator and rcdrecord. CDWserver stores the files transmitted by the
clients, reserves the CD-writer and controls the CD-writer using cdrecord.
webCDcreator is a Java applet that runs within your browser (Netscape or
IE), assists you when putting together a CD, and transmits the files.
Finally rcdrecord is a command line client that trys to offer the
functionality of cdrecord over the network.

Changes: Some minor bug fixes were made. FreeBSD compile errors were
fixed. New Ukrainian messages were added. The Dutch, Swedish, and
Norwegian messages were updated. A "burn button" was added, and
webCDcreator is now signed by a "Thawte Freemail Member" certificate.

About: The Wheel 'O Yum is a program to assist in deciding where to eat.
All too often, excess time is spent among groups trying to decide. The
Wheel 'O Yum allows one or more people to vote on their favorite
restaurants and spin the wheel for a random, but educated, restaurant.

Changes: Clicking anywhere on the power meter commands the wheel to spin.
A power bar timeout was added, causing an automatic spin in 30 seconds.
The users guide includes more documentation on Wheel 'O Yum server. The
message/status dialog is closed after logging in. 'User' and 'Restaurant
Votes' menus are disabled if the user is not logged in. The Restaurant
Manager dialog initially displays with a "Create New Restaurant" label
instead of "Apply". A misspelling of 'exiting' was fixed in the Server
Settings dialog. Bugs were fixed and code cleanup was performed.
