Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
About: aiSee reads a textual, easy-to-read, and easy-to-learn graph
specification and automatically calculates a customizable graph layout.
This layout is then displayed, and can be printed or interactively
explored. aiSee features 15 basic graph layout algorithms (including
force-directed layout), recursive subgraph nesting, fish-eye views, and an
animation interface. It has been optimized to handle huge graphs
automatically generated by applications (e.g. compilers).
Changes: Enhancements in this release include improved force-directed
layout and full support for additional bitmap fonts for edge labels. In
tree layout, switching edge labels on no longer cancels out node order
specifications. Installation hassles under Mac OS X have been fixed.

About: Brinance is a commandline financial planning and tracking program,
hoping to be a functional replacement for something overly complicated
like GnuCash for those who prefer the commandline. It is written in simple
Perl and has a few advanced features, such as scheduling transactions in
the future and having as many accounts as one might care to have.
Changes: A bug when specifying a date as number of days in the future
rather than a particular date and time has been fixed. Some documentation
has been added to help it all be a bit more hackable.

About: The C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) is a simple alternative to

with threads, synchronization primitives, and IP sockets. It is portable
across modern Unix and Windows systems and includes a sample HTTP daemon
showing the full power of the library.

Thursday, July 3rd 2003 04:20
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Communications :: Ham Radio
About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, and the
sound is played through the soundcard.
Changes: The entire program has been recoded into an X-Chat plugin instead
of a standalone IRC client. It works just like before, but allows the user
to use all the features of X-Chat at the same time. It also features a
simple graphical panel that is functionally the same as the old command
line. The iambic implementation was corrected and simplified, and a man
page was added.

The library is oriented towards the type of operations people tend to
think of rather than those operations used routinely by computers.
Changes: Many bugfixes, including removal of non-ASCII characters from the

Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than
a 0.03% chance of false positives.
Changes: A DSF_CLASSIFY flag was added to libdspam to provide
classify-only functionality. A bit assignment problem which prevented
forward headers from being ignored when a signature is not found in a spam
was fixed. Bugs related to corpus mail which resulted in all corpus mail
headers being ignored were fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Echo is a framework for developing object-oriented, event-driven
Web applications in Java. Echo removes the developer from having to think
in terms of "page-based" applications and enables him/her to develop
applications using the conventional object-oriented and event-driven
paradigm for user interface development. Knowledge of HTML, HTTP, and
JavaScript is not required. Tutorials, white papers, and full API
documentation are available.
Changes: This version is a stable, bugfix-only release to correct issues
found in Echo 1.0. Several issues related to ButtonModels were resolved,
including problems encountered when adding ActionListeners. A pair of bugs
were fixed in the Grid and Table components, which caused background
colors to render incorrectly under certain conditions. An issue was
resolved where embedding an Echo application inside of a frame of an
application hosted on a different Web server generated client-side
exceptions. A few minor errors were corrected in the JavaDoc API
documentation.

Changes: This is an important release candidate. For those using an older

About: Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements
instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects standard
for transparent persistence. It is the most complete implementation of the
JDO specification for relational data stores, and comes with tools for
producing a schema from an object model, producing class files from an
existing schema, and a performance pack (distributed caching and statement
batching) that improves performance by 15 - 30 times. It supports most
relational databases, application servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total
coding effort by 20-40%.
Changes: Custom fetch groups are now supported. Participation in a global
XA-compliant transaction is now possible in a managed environment.
Informix IDS is now a supported database. Query caching is now supported.
SQL 92-style joins are now supported.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: KXParse is a PHP-based, lightweight, easy-to-use XML parser. It
does not require installation because it's just an include file that's
loaded on the fly. It features an API that simplifies the process of
reading files.
Changes: The code was rewritten from scratch to remove all of the old
limitations and to provide a big performance improvement. This version
depends on the expat library, which is bundled with PHP. KXParse now also
supports tag name-independent selection and selection of tags that match a
particular regular expression. Many other usability features were also
added to make XML parsing much easier.

basic features and no calendar or folders, but it is fully MIME capable
and can handle attachments. It is also very secure when you use https
encryption. It converts HTML messages to ASCII for security reasons, but
you can still see the HTML versions if you want. The code is clean and
structured. The installation is straightforward and doesn't require a lot
of non-standard modules.

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed
using C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each
datum to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various data
sources and expose them as contexts and to generate interesting EA.
Current implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event updates
using fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount a berkeley
database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox (mount your
mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: Support for emblems and medallions was added. Many attribute
index updates were made. A new creation module for eaindex and emblem was
added. New EditStringList, Menus, and MedallionEditor GTK+ objects were
added. Speedups were made in GTK+ treemodel. "ferris-type" ea was added to
the skiplist for tryToFindAttributeByOverMounting(). The PNG plugin now
has lazier loading. Updates for Red Hat 9 were made. GTK+ 2.2 is now
required. Reverse lexicon XML dump was implemented.

[041] - MP3Gain 1.2 (Development)
by Rodrigo Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/skrull/)
Thursday, July 3rd 2003 04:17
About: MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same
volume. It does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do.
Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file
actually sounds to the human ear. Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are
completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the
program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.
Changes: This version features a very useful option called "Don't clip
when doing Track Gain". If this is applied, then when you do "Track Gain",
if the suggested Track gain will cause clipping, then MP3Gain will apply
the maximum non-clipping gain instead. Handling was improved when ignoring
corrupt MP3 frames. An optional "beep when finished" was added. Tags are
now used to store analysis and undo info in the MP3 file itself.
