[001] - Agata Report 5 beta 002 (Stable)
by Pablo DallOglio (http://freshmeat.net/users/pablodalloglio/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 08:51
Database :: Front-Ends
About: Agata Report is a database reporting tool and EIS tool (graph
generation), like Crystal Reports. It is written in PHP-GTK, and allows
you to edit and get SQL results from several databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL,
Oracle, DB2, MsSql, Informix, InterBase, Sybase, and Frontbase). It
connects to a database, lists its tables and fields, and allows you to
link among tables, make constraints and orders, apply functions, and make
queries. The result is exported to PostScript, plain text, HTML, or
spreadsheet (CSV) format. Its interface has English, Portuguese, Italian,
French, German, and Swedish support. There is a Merge tool that allows you
to write any document and insert variables from the database, a Dia tool
that allows you to generate ER diagrams, and a label tool that allows you
to generate address labels. You can also create multi-level reports, with
subtotals by group, and a grand total, besides run-time parameters.
Changes: The Report Repository (report browser) was created. The interface
was totally redesigned. An "Automatic Group by" feature was added. The
internal classes were reconstructed. An "Export as XML" feature was added
(with sub-totals and grand-total). The Master/Detail interface was
redesigned. Tables can now be auto-linked to each other, and the "Export
as Diagrams" feature now draws the lines linking the tables. Table
Families were created, allowing tables to be grouped in Families. The
DataDescription interface was created, allowing you to set friend names on
tables and fields (masks).

Software Development :: Version Control
About: arch is a modern replacement for CVS, specifically designed for the
distributed development needs of open source projects. It has uniquely
good support for development on branches (especially good merging tools),
distributed repositories (every developer can have branches in their own
repository), changeset-oriented project management (arch commits changes
to multiple files at once), and, of course, file and directory renaming.
Changes: Two important bugs were fixed. Users of the stable branch are
advised to upgrade.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor, similar to the
top command. At regular intervals, it shows system-level activity related
to the CPU, memory, swap, disks and network layers, and it shows for every
active process the CPU utilization in system and user mode, the virtual
and resident memory growth, priority, username, state, and exit code. The
process level activity is also shown for processes which finished during
the last interval, to get a complete overview about the consumers of
things such as CPU time. Atop only shows the active system-resources and
processes, and only shows the deviations since the previous interval.
Changes: All internal counters are 64-bit to support larger systems.
Per-CPU statistics are maintained for multiprocessor systems. Personal
defaults can be configured via the ~/.atoprc file. System-level statistics
for disks, network-interfaces, and CPU's are sorted on activity. A maximum
number of screen-lines can be specified for every resource (e.g. when 40
disks are installed in your system, you can specify to show the 5 most
active disks only). Two new subcommands were added. The layout of the raw
logfiles is incompatible with earlier versions, due to the enlarged
counters.

About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, or
using the mouse buttons, and the sound is played through the soundcard.

About: EmPy is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in

output. This is accomplished via expansions, which are special signals to
the EmPy system and are set off by a special prefix (by default the at
sign, '
'). It can expand arbitrary Python expressions and statements in
this way, as well as a variety of special forms. Textual data not
explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output,
allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Also supported
are callbacks via hooks, recording and playback via diversions, and

Wednesday, July 9th 2003 01:09
Software Development :: Pre-processors
About: Logtalk is an open source object-oriented extension to the Prolog
programming language. Integrating logic programming with object-oriented
and event-driven programming, it is compatible with most Prolog compilers.
It supports both prototypes and classes. In addition, it supports
component-based programming through category-based composition.
Changes: A spurious backtracking bug in the DCG rule translator was
corrected, and two more examples of DCGs were added. A new config file
was included for XSB 2.6, and the Logtalk compiler was updated to
compile cleanly under XSB. The SWI-Prolog config file now hides compiled
entity predicates (which requires SWI-Prolog 5.2.3 or later). A new
optional configs/swihook.pl file contains hook code that allows Logtalk
entities to be compiled and loaded using SWI-Prolog load_files/2 and
consult/1 predicates. A syntax definition file was included for the Hydra

About: NetHogs is a small 'net top' tool. Instead of breaking the traffic
down per packet type or per subnet, like most similar tools do, this
groups bandwidth by process, and does not rely on a special kernel module

immediately see which PID is causing this, and, if it's some kind of

[064] - SFT 0.4.9 (Stable)
by nbenoit (http://freshmeat.net/users/nbenoit/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 13:55
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet
Utilities
About: SFT (Simple File Transfer) is a file transfer program, a bit like
rcp. It is designed to simplify file transfers from one computer to an
another when they are connected to the Internet. The person receiving the
file has to run the program in server mode (-s), while the sender of the
file has to run the program in client mode (-c), specifying the
destination host IP and the file names. File integrity is checked by using
checksums.
Changes: The last few printf statements have been replaced with fprintf.
configure.in has been modified in order to verify a few more dependencies.
A limitation has been added for the file listing length (the limit is
nearly unreachable; it's only a temporary security fix). A bug with the
bytes_we_have variable update (server side) and a bug with the
wait_for_input() function (did not report timeouts well) have been fixed.
A loop has been added for the file listing transfer in order to remove a
limit (the transfer didn't work if the file listing was longer than
DIAL_BUFFER_SIZE). Error strings received by the server start with the '+'
character now.

About: Show is a fast, flexible, extensible, and bloat-free image viewer
for X11 that can fade images in, display them, and fade them out according
to user-specified values of fade speed, fade type, and delay. It features
an extremely small executable footprint (about 36KB), support for well
over a dozen image formats, variable scaling, magnification, window
positioning, clockwise and counterclockwise image rotation, X/Y axis
flipping, over 200 different color transition modes, wildcard support, and
logging abilities. It can also be easilly incorporated into multimedia
presentations, shell scripts, and other utilities.
Changes: Show now features both keyboard and mousewheel-controllable
dynamic zoom. The frame pause, frame advance, and frame restart features
are now mapped to mouse buttons as well.

[068] - Socat 1.3.2.0 (Stable)
by Gerhard Rieger (http://freshmeat.net/users/rieger/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 14:01
Utilities
About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file,
pipe, device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP,
TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides
forking, logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess
communication, and many more options. It can be used, for example, as a
TCP relay (one-shot or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell
interface to Unix sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented
programs to a serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment
(su and chroot) for running client or server shell scripts with network
connections.
Changes: A new mode allows you to directly connect an executed program to
the other side of the relay. Files greated 2GB are now supported. A new
output style of the filan FD analyzer makes it well suited for use in
shell scripts. A couple of minor improvements and corrections have been
made.

[069] - Spyce - Python Server Pages 1.3.11
by batripler (http://freshmeat.net/users/batripler/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 13:56
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Pre-processors
About: SPYCE is a server-side language that supports simple and efficient
Python-based dynamic HTML generation, otherwise called Python Server
Pages. Those who like Python and are familiar with JSP, PHP, or ASP should
have a look at Spyce. Its modular design makes it very flexible and
extensible. It can also be used as a command-line utility for static text
pre-processing or as a Web-server proxy.
Changes: The biggest improvement in this release is a rewritten parser,
which improves script compile times by 2-6x. This will greatly help
performance for CGI-based users, and make script development more
interactive. A daemon mode has been added to the Web server, and
functionality has been exposed to allow for integration with the Coil MVC
framework. Some Windows-specific path manipulation bugs and other more
minor user-reported issues have been fixed.

[070] - sstree 0.5
by Jason Robbins (http://freshmeat.net/users/jrobbins/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 18:14
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: sstree makes it as easy as possible for developers to implement the
commonly-recurring need of presenting tree-structure information in a
Web-based user interface. This is done with a few very simple JavaScript
code examples. Since the starting point is simple, it is easy to build on.
Key features include collapse/expand functionality, a clean HTML
structure, and cross-browser compatability. Visual appearance is handled
by CSS, and degraded mode is still usable in browsers without JavaScript.

[072] - sysklogd-sql 1.4.2
by ronnocol (http://freshmeat.net/users/ronnocol/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 10:39
Database
System :: Logging
About: sysklogd-sql is a port of the sysklogd daemon that can log data to
a MySQL or PostgreSQL database running either on the same machine or a
remote database server. The SQL configuration is done in the standard
syslog.conf file for easy administration and configuration. Also included
is a set of sample PHP scripts to query the data from the syslog
database. In a large environment, you can set up a central logging server,
or configure a secure syslog environment that will make it very difficult
to tamper with the syslog data.
Changes: This version supports both MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and
includes major enhancements to the way that errors are handled when
sending data to the SQL server. It no longer requires the SQL server to be
running prior to syslogd. The ability to log to multiple SQL servers of
the same type has been added (beta).

[073] - The Life of a Geek 0.34 (Preview)
by core_dump (http://freshmeat.net/users/core_dump_0/)
Wednesday, July 9th 2003 20:10
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek)
must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on
the Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your
box. Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to
sleep, you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a
month-long college course and improve your education, but remember that
paying attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack.
Find a quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and
grocery stores, but remember again that time away from your computer
leaves it open to attack. Virii may also appear on your computer,
weakening your computer's health points regularly until cleaned.
Changes: A bug was fixed where the first leapyear would come after 5
years. Now, you begin the game in a leapyear. A 40% chance of the logoff
feature in the hacker fights working was unfair. It has been raised to
60%.

System :: Systems Administration
About: Usermin is a Web interface that can be used by any user on a UNIX
system to easily perform tasks like reading mail, setting up SSH, or
configuring mail forwarding. It can be thought of as a simplified version
of Webmin designed for use by normal users rather than system
administrators.
Changes: The Caldera-style theme for Webmin was ported, to Usermin as
well. Access control options were added to the Read Mail module for
limiting the types of folders available, and an option for detaching
files was added to the Read Mail module. The Mail Forwarding auto-reply
feature can now limit the rate of replies to the same address. The File
Manager and SSH/Telnet modules were improved for Mac OS X browsers, and
the setup.sh script was improved to take a directory parameter (such as
/usr/local/usermin)
