[002] - alogg 1.3.4
  by lyrian (http://freshmeat.net/users/lyrian/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 08:58

Software Development :: Libraries

About: alogg is a library which makes it easier to use Ogg/Vorbis streams
with Allegro. It offers facilities to decode, stream, and encode
Ogg/Vorbis streams, and integrates those facilities with Allegro's
datafile and sample loading routines. alogg comes with a sample player,
streamer, and encoder based on Allegro's sound routines.

Changes: alogg is now verified to work with Allegro 4.0.0. The datogg
grabber plugin can now encode samples on the fly (from WAV, etc.). A new
section has been added to the manual for datogg. A selectable encoding
quality dialog has been added to datogg. Both alogg with and without
Tremor support can now be installed at the same time. Fixes have been made
for compilation with GCC 3.2.3.

[003] - avidemux 2.0.10 (Development)
  by mean99 (http://freshmeat.net/users/mean99/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 05:37

Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI, MPEG,
Nuppelvideo and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported (M-JPEG, MPEG,
DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec. Video can be edited,
cut, appended, filtered (resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either
AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG 1/2.

Changes: This version is the first to build on a non-x86 system, and was
tested on Sparc/Solaris. The look and feel was enhanced by having most of
the dialog boxes switched to GTK2. The program now tries to autodetect VBR
MP3.

[005] - BBStatus 2.0RC16
  by Tarhon-Onu Victor (http://freshmeat.net/users/mituc/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 01:28

About: BBStatus is an IP accounting package, and an SNMP and IP monitoring
tool for Linux. It collects, summarizes, and displays the values from its
database. It can be used for IP accounting (using iptables, you can design
various kinds of accounting filters), SNMP monitoring (collects data
making SNMP requests), IP monitoring (using ping, it stores and summarizes
values like min, avg, max reply time, and packet loss), and client traffic
filtering (using various types of filters). It also provides user based
access so that every user can log in and check the traffic from/through
his/her IP addresses. It requires PostgreSQL, Apache with mod_auth_pgsql,
Perl(Net::SNMP), and RRDTool.

Changes: This release added rc scripts that create accounting filters and
install IP client filters at startup. Scripts are provided for Red
Hat-like and Slackware distributions. The database structure and core
functions are now considered stable and some new features were added.
Users with GID 1 (users) can now also view the ICMP monitoring
statistics.

[006] - Bifrost Firewall iptables GUI 0.9.5
  by Martin Forest (http://freshmeat.net/users/mforest/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 21:27

Internet
Security
System :: Networking

About: Bifrost is a firewall management interface to iptables (iptables
GUI). The system is inspired by Checkpoint, Cisco PIX, and Watchguard
firewall management. With Bifrost you are able to work with incoming and
outgoing traffic flows rather than focusing on interfaces. The system
supports both IPSEC and High Availability. It is even possible to manage
HA from the GUI. Bifrost has an advanced anti-spoofing function. There is
also a very easy-to-use log watch function where you can apply filtering.
Logging is controlled per rule. You can turn on/off logging for a rule on
the fly, and there is built-in protection against log flooding. All
firewall changes are made without interrupt already established
connections. There is also support for traffic marking (mangle), very
useful when you are working with QOS (bandwidth management) and advance
routing such as policy-based routing. If you for some reason need
something extra, it is possible to add your own commands.

Changes: It is now possible to enable routing on the same interface, i.e.
it is possible to allow traffic to both enter and exit on the same
interface. This kind of traffic is considered as Outgoing traffic.

[008] - cacti 0.8.2a (Development)
  by Ian Berry (http://freshmeat.net/users/raxnet/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 01:49

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Cacti is a complete frontend to RRDTool. It stores all of the
necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a
MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven. Along with being
able to maintain graphs, data sources, and round robin archives in a
database, Cacti also handles the data gathering. There is SNMP support for
those used to creating traffic graphs with MRTG.

Changes: A major fix was made to the poller cache to prevented certain
items from being added. The c-based poller (cactid) was optimized to
spawn detached threads based on each hosts rather than from a single
list.

  Monday, July 14th 2003 07:46

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolveable, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. An extended BNF syntax allows defining new domain-specific
languages or parsing existing formats (HTML pages for example). A
template-based syntax like PHP and JSP allows writing the patterns for
generating code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected
areas with hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source
translation, and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a
straightforward process, with no binding to an external programming
language and with no translation of requirements specification in a
constraining format.

Changes: Socket handling was added to acquire data from and generate code
to socket streams. Processing of binary data was improved with bug fixes
and new features. New BNF predefined non-terminals were added. A regular
expression was improved.

  Monday, July 14th 2003 14:06

System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: diradm is a simple bash script for managing POSIX users and groups
stored in a LDAP directory, offering the same features as the traditional
passwd file utilities useradd/usermod/userdel and
groupadd/groupmod/groupdel. It uses the ldapsearch, ldapadd, ldapmodify,
and ldapdelete utilities from the OpenLDAP project to perform the needed
queries against the LDAP database.

Changes: An option has been added to the useradd command to create a group
with the same name as the new user (and, if not already assigned, the same
ID number). This option also enables userdel to remove user groups if no
members exist. groupdel now verifies that the group to be removed is not
some user's primary group. Useradd and groupadd not respecting their max
ID values has been fixed.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Monitoring

About: Feedbackd is a client/server system that provides dynamic feedback
of server load in a Linux Virtual Server (LVS)-based cluster. Monitor
plugins are used to measure the health of each server, allowing a flexible
way to report load back to the load balancer. It also facilitates the
addition and removal of servers from the cluster.

Changes: Configuration has been changed to an XML format, and most
commandline options and compile-time directives have been moved to the
config file. Two new server monitor plugins were added to the agent: a
Perl plugin to allow Perl scripts to be used to monitor server load, and a
constant-value plugin mainly for testing. Behaviour with
broken/intermittent network connections has been improved. Efficiency
improvements were also made on the master process.

[029] - GNU Automake 1.7.6
  by sigra (http://freshmeat.net/users/sigra/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 04:31

Software Development

About: Automake is a tool for automatically generating Makefiles compliant
with the GNU Coding Standards. It was inspired by the 4.4BSD make and
include files, but aims to be portable and to conform to the GNU standards
for Makefile variables and targets. Automake is a Perl script. The input
files are called Makefile.am. The output files are called Makefile.in;
They are intended for use with Autoconf. Automake requires certain things
to be done in your configure.in. This package also includes the "aclocal"
program. aclocal is a program to generate an 'aclocal.m4' based on the
contents of 'configure.in'. It is useful as an extensible, maintainable
mechanism for augmenting autoconf.

Changes: depcomp's ICC mode was fixed for ICC 7.1. Calls to
AC_CONFIG_FILES and friends with too few arguments are now diagnosed, and
the way that maintainer-clean removes autom4te.cache in VPATH builds was
fixed. AM_PATH_LISPDIR was fixed to work with POSIXLY_CORRECT=3D1, and
the location reported in some diagnostics related to AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS
were fixed. Latin-1 characters were removed from elisp-comp, and the
manual's dircategory was updated to match the Free Software Directory.

[048] - LILO 22.5.7-beta3 (Beta)
  by John Coffman (http://freshmeat.net/users/johncoffman/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 01:44

System :: Boot

About: LILO is a Boot loader for Linux/x86 and other PC operating systems.
It is responsible for loading your Linux kernel from either a floppy or a
hard drive and passing control to it. It is capable of booting beyond
cylinder 1024 of a hard disk if the BIOS supports EDD packet call
extensions to the int 0x13 interface. LILO can also be used to boot many
other operating systems, including DOS, Windows (all versions), OS/2, and
the BSD variants. The LILO distribution includes full source,
documentation and support files.

Changes: This version addresses a screen clearing problem in the first
stage loader, which was entirely rewritten to avoid the FF emulation
code. Problems with the 2.4.21 kernel and hardware RAID controllers were
fixed, and the boot installer is now friendlier to devfs kernels. The -M
switch now installs Master Boot Loaders that pass lilo parameters
transparently using the chain loader, and the "-T geom" switch now has
more complete and useful output. "mkrescue" now dynamically determines
the loopback device in use and works with devfs.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Mod_security is an intrusion detection and prevention module for
the Apache Web server. Its purpose is to protect vulnerable applications
by detecting and (optionally) rejecting attacks. In addition to request
filtering, it also can create Web application audit logs. Requests are
filtered using regular expressions. Mod_security can analyse POST
payloads, unlike other similar projects.

Changes: This is mostly a maintenance release, consisting of significant
bug and security fixes. Some parts of the Apache 2 version were completely
rewritten to bring the quality of the Apache 2 version in line with the
Apache 1 version. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade.

About: OpenGUI (formerly FastGL) is a high-level multi-platform,
thread-safe C/C++ graphics and windowing library built upon a fast,
low-level x86 ASM graphics kernel. It provides 2D drawing primitives and
an event- driven windowing API for easy application development, and it
supports the BMP, JPG, TGA, PNG, and PCX image file formats and TTF fonts.
You can write apps in the old Borland BGI style or in a windowed style
like QT. OpenGUI supports the keyboard and mouse as event sources, the
Linux framebuffer, SVGAlib, and XFree86/DGA2 (HW accelerated) as drawing
backends, Mesa3D under Linux, and 8, 15, 16, and 32-bpp color modes.

Changes: MenuWindow constructors no longer require a 'name' parameter.
FileDialog now closes when you click to a file, as it did previously.
MenuWindow automation positioning now also works as before. MS Visual C++
6 support was added, along with completely new Win32 and DirectX code
and support for windowed mode under Windows (enabled with the '-win'
command line parameter) The same color depth must be used for both
OpenGUI apps and your Windows desktop.

  Monday, July 14th 2003 01:53

Database
Software Development :: Libraries

About: psycopg is a PostgreSQL database adapter for the Python programming
language. Its main advantages are that it supports the full Python DBAPI
2.0 and it is thread safe at level 2. It was designed for heavily
multi-threaded applications that create and destroy lots of cursors and
make a conspicuous number of concurrent INSERTs or UPDATEs. The psycopg
distribution includes ZPsycopgDA, a Zope Database Adapter.

Changes: Quoting now removes NUL characters from strings. An obscure

  by Thorsten Kukuk (http://freshmeat.net/users/kukuk/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 12:39

System :: Systems Administration

About: pwdutils is a collection of utilities to manage the passwd and
shadow user information. The difference to the shadow suite is that these
utilities can also modify the information stored in NIS, NIS+, or LDAP.
PAM is used for user authentication and changing the pasword. It contains
passwd, chage, chfn, chsh, and a daemon for changing the password on a
remote machine over a secure SSL connection. The daemon also uses PAM so
that it can change passwords independent of where they are stored.

Changes: A new useradd implementation has been added. The new version is
not only able to add a new account to /etc/passwd, but the
password/shadow/group file can also be in a different location (like
/etc/yp/). A shell script can be called after the user has been created.

[071] - pydance 0.7.2
  by theGREENzebra (http://freshmeat.net/users/tgz/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 12:40

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: pydance is a dancing game written in Python, formerly named pyDDR.
The idea is simple. There's a floor mat with arrows, and the game scrolls
arrows up the screen to the beat while playing a song. When the arrows
reach the top of the screen (not sooner and not later), the player hits
the corresponding arrow on the pad, and given that it's hit on time with
the beat, points are scored. Based on how well the dance is put together,
s/he is graded at the end of the song. Both keyboard and mat play are
supported.

Changes: The game is now called pydance instead of pyDDR. New lifebar
modes are in, such as "drop" and "suck", and parser bugs have been fixed.
Song "folders" have been implemented, which requires more than 60 songs in
the selector to take effect. A few modes have been filled in: boost,
brake, left, right, mirror, shuffle, and random ("supershuffle").

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your

machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be

  by Pascal Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/pascalmartin/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 21:26

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: RoadMap is a GIS program for Linux that displays street maps. The
maps are provided by the US Census Bureau, and thus only cover the US.
Specific areas are displayed by selecting a street address (street number,
street name, city, and state). It interfaces with gpsd to track a GPS
position, and has been designed to be usable on both a desktop or laptop
computer, or on a PDA.

Changes: This version avoids using SIGCHLD (FreeBSD portability), fixes a
bug with 32 bits street numbers, uses less memory when managing the map's
grid, makes the GUI more compliant to GNOME's style guide, merges two
features whereby users can select a location given a longitude/latitude
and save the current context on exit (restore on restart), keeps the
display offset when in GPS tracking mode, so that, for example, the GPS
position can be positioned at the bottom of the screen, no longer shows
the navigation signs when not in GPS tracking mode, and includes a few
other bugfixes intended to make it easier to use.

About: SPSQLite class is a class in PHP for easy SQLite operation. With it
you can create databases, connect to an SQLite database, send a query, or
make simple transactions.

Changes: Many new methods were added: selectRows(), setWaitingTime(),
turboMode(), optimizeDatabase(), addFunction(), alterTable(),
getTableInfo(), getColsType(), encodeBinary(), decodeBinary(),
_colsTypeCombine(), _createColsQuery(), _filterName(), _filterTrim(),
_filterType(), _setColsType(), _setTableInfo(), and _setType().
Modify:$_type is SQLITE_BOTH to default. The parameter $_rememberType was
added to the constructor, and the method _setType() allows you to select a
type.

[088] - Socat 1.3.2.1 (Stable)
  by Gerhard Rieger (http://freshmeat.net/users/rieger/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 14:04

Utilities

About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file,
pipe, device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP,
TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides
forking, logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess
communication, and many more options. It can be used, for example, as a
TCP relay (one-shot or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell
interface to Unix sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented
programs to a serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment
(su and chroot) for running client or server shell scripts with network
connections.

Changes: This release fixes a major bug which had been introduced by a
last minute change during the 1.3.2.0 release. This bug had made the new
"nofork" option useless. Some more corrections are included, e.g. the
solution to the ENOCHLD problem.

[089] - Software Suspend 1.0-pre4 (2.4 Development)
  by Nigel Cunningham (http://freshmeat.net/users/ncunningham/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 01:46

System :: Boot
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Power (UPS)

About: swsusp enables you to suspend your machine without having to use
APM or BIOS support. It creates an image which is saved in your active
swaps. At the next system bootup, the kernel detects the saved image,
restores the memory from it and then it continues to run as before you've
suspended.

Changes: An enable_escape proc entry was added, which makes it possible
to abort suspends by pressing the escape key. Other keys (pause, reboot,
and log level keys) are only active if debugging is compiled in. Changes
were made in an attempt to make flushing IDE queues more reliable, along
with a cleanup for changing log levels, a fix for a crash that occurred
when using debug levels 5+, and other small cleanups.

[096] - The Tamber Project 1.2.11 (Pogo)
  by tamber (http://freshmeat.net/users/tamber/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 09:17

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: The Tamber project is a free, componentised n-tier website engine
that uses open languages such as XML and JavaScript. In a nutshell,
content is stored in separate XML files, in databases, or other data
objects; business functions are carried out by JavaScript and ASP; and
presentation is controlled by an XSL transformation, which allows for
delivery over multiple channels such as HTML, WAP and email. Currently
Tamber contains modules that support; automatic locale detection, search
engine tracking and optimisation, e-commerce catalogues; shopping carts
and order management, secure sign in, data access and conversion services,
advanced session management, content managemt tools and forums.

Changes: This release adds lots of big bugfixes. A few new features have
been added, as well. This will be the last release before the Numenor
branch opens; barring any new bugs, this will be the last stable release
for a while. It is recommended that you do a clean install.

[098] - tinyproxy 1.6.0
  by Robert James Kaes (http://freshmeat.net/users/rjkaes/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 11:58

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking

About: tinyproxy is a lightweight HTTP proxy designed to do the job with a
minimum of system resource use. It's ideal for small networks in which a
larger HTTP proxy such as Squid might be overkill or a security risk. This
simplicity also makes tinyproxy an ideal candidate for customization; it
takes very little time to read and understand the tinyproxy source, and
you can start adding your own desired features in short order.

Changes: This release adds both bugfixes and feature enhancements. The two
biggest changes are the additions of dynamic HTML error-handling code
(which allows the HTML error messages to be template-driven) and expanded
upstream proxy support (allowing different proxies to be used, based on
the request). In addition, there have been numerous bugfixes to work
around some broken clients (IE's POST method, for example), and broken
servers (which do not follow the HTTP specification correctly). All users
of tinyproxy are encouraged to upgrade to this release.

[100] - Turbo Vision 2.0.2 RC1 (Beta)
  by Salvador Eduardo Tropea (SET) (http://freshmeat.net/users/setsoft/)
  Monday, July 14th 2003 14:01

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Turbo Vision is a C++ library that provides a very nice user
interface for console applications. This UNIX port is based on Borland's
version 2.0 with fixes. It was made to create RHIDE, a nice IDE for gcc
and other GNU compilers. The library supports /dev/vcsa devices for fast
access to local consoles, and it uses ncurses to run from telnet and
xterm. This port, in contrast to the Sigala's port, doesn't have "100%
compatibility with the original library" as goal. Instead, many
modifications were made for the sake of security (especially buffer
overflows). This port is also available for the original platform (DOS).

Changes: This release candidate fixes problems related to UTF-8 terminals
(like Red Hat 8/9). It also adds a new class called TVIntl that's a
wrapper for the libintl/gettext i18n library. The compilation mechanism
was simplified, and support was added for newer Win32 compilers (Borland
CBuilder 6 and MSVC 7).
