[001] - Agent Farms 0.3.0-20030706
  by Stefan Urbanek (http://freshmeat.net/users/stivi/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 22:00

Desktop Environment :: GNUstep
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Agent Farms is a system for modeling and simulation of complex,
multi-agent based systems. The system can be used for creating models of
multi-agent systems, interactive and distributed simulation, observation
and visualisation of the simulation, and population modification and
migration. On those models one can learn about the evolution of strategies
in the populations of agents.

Changes: AgentFarms is undergoing heavy changes. The framework has been
split into AgentFarms, FarmsSimulator, FarmsModel, FarmsData, and
FarmsFarmer. New features include object prototypes, simulation objects,
and object probes. Farmer introduces partial support for farmer
modules--custom farming and observation bundles. Standard modules are a
prototype browser, object browser, probe browser, and log view. Example
models were rewritten for the new model format, and a new model template
is included.

[004] - Bid Monkey 1.3.1 (Stable)
  by pedram (http://freshmeat.net/users/pedram/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 12:31

Internet
Utilities

About: Bid Monkey is a command line tool, written in Perl, created to
automatically place a bid on an eBay auction at the last minute. It will
run in the foreground or background, and only requires basic information
from the user, such as username, password, item number, and the maximum
bid to place. Its most unique feature is that it will automatically
determine the auction ending time. All you have to do is tell it how long
before the end of the auction you would like to place your bid. Bid Monkey
will work internationally (eBay.de for example) due to the fact that any
item number can be viewed through any eBay site.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in price extraction for prices greater
than $999 and adds minor code cleanup.

Documentation
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation

About: Bungisoft Syntax Visualizer adds visual impact and interactivity to
the documentation of your parsers. It supports a wide variety of parser
generation formats, including yacc, bison, JavaCC, BNF, EBNF and ISO EBNF
(ISO/IEC 14977). It is a self-contained Java-based visualization
application that dynamically creates visual representation of your syntax
and grammar, saving it as images for inclusion in your documentation. It
supports all common image formats, easy integration with your existing
build environment, full customization of the look of your railroad
diagrams, and multi- platform support.

Changes: This is a major release. The way that the trial version works was
changed. Users can now generate images in any available input grammars.
Images will contain a digital watermark. Code bloat was cleaned up. The
installers are a lot smaller now.

[014] - DIBS 0.81
  by Emin (http://freshmeat.net/users/emin63/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 09:20

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Since disk drives are cheap, backup should be cheap too. Of course
it does not help to mirror your data by adding more disks to your own
computer because a fire, flood, power surge, etc. could still wipe out
your local data center. Instead, you should give your files to peers
(and in return store their files) so that if a catastrophe strikes your
area, you can recover data from surviving peers. The Distributed Internet
Backup System (DIBS) is designed to implement this vision.

Changes: This is a bugfix release designed to get DIBS working on Windows.
Some bugs present on UNIX systems were also fixed. The old install
procedure was replaced with a simpler one using distutils. UNIX users can
now install via "python setup.py install" and Windows users can use the
self-extracting Windows installer.

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Genetic Algorithm Utility Library (GAUL) is a programming
library for evolutionary algorithms. Both steady-state and
generation-based evolution is supported, together with the island model.
GAUL supports the Darwinian, Lamarckian, and Baldwininan evolutionary
schemes. Standard mutation, crossover, and selection operators are
provided, while code hooks additionally allow custom operators. It
provides data structures and functions for handling and manipulation of
the data required for a genetic algorithm. Additional stochastic
algorithms are provided for comparison to the genetic algorithms. Much of
the functionality is also available through a simple S-Lang interface.

Changes: This release contains several significant bugfixes. It also
introduces a much improved layout of installed header files. A new
example program, royalroad_bitstring, is provided. Several new functions
are available for accessing properties of the population structures:
ga_population_get_crossover(), ga_population_get_mutation(),
ga_population_get_migration(), ga_population_get_elitism(), and
ga_population_get_scheme().

  Thursday, July 24th 2003 10:23

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: PyHtmlTable is a class for Python CGIs to generate HTML tables on
the fly. It allows you to set individual row and cell attributes via
arbitrary dictionaries, and span rows and columns. It autogrows the table
if cells are set outside its initial range. It allows dynamic insertion of
new rows and columns anywhere in the table, and allows bulk population of
table data via arrays to arbitrary locations in the table. It also
provides default cell attributes for tablewide uniformity and the ability
to override these on a cell-by-cell basis. PyHtmlTable is intended to be a
functional equivalent to Table.pm or Table.php.

Changes: A minor requested change was made: when only colspan and or
rowspan is set, the cell being generated now acquires the default cell
attributes.

  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 12:32

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.

Changes: "sar -x pid" and "sar -X pid" work again. sar had a longstanding
bug that prevented -P from working properly if the machine had more than
32 processors. This is now fixed. A bug introduced in 4.1.2, which made
some LINUX RESTART messages not be displayed by sar, has been fixed.

  by aurélio marinho jargas (http://freshmeat.net/users/verde666/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 02:22

Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: txt2tags is a format conversion tool written in Python that
generates HTML, SGML, LaTeX, man page, MoinMoin, Magic Point, and
PageMaker documents from a plain text file with little marks. Different
from other conversion tools, it is generic, and not target-specific (as a
txt2html tool). This way, you can keep just one source text file and one
tool for all your formatting needs.

Changes: This version features new %!preproc: and %!postproc: user
defined filters. There's also a new mark + for explicit numbered titles,
+like this+, so now users can mix normal titles with numbered ones, like
a book with Appendix. Now all the config settings can be linked with a
especific target, using the new "%!key(target):value" syntax. Lots of
user reported bugs was fixed, titles on LaTeX are unnumbered by default
(as other targets) and the GUI was improved, showing %!cmdline contents

Office/Business :: Groupware
Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: XPlanner is a Web-based project planning and tracking tool for
eXtreme Programming (XP) teams. XPlanner is implemented using Java, JSP,
and Struts. It supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle.

Changes: This release contains several significant enhancements. The
external enhancements include graphical project statistics, a distributed
integration "token" for managing deliveries by distributed teams, more
flexible time reporting (allows pure duration in addition to time
intervals), increased control over project visibility, updated I18N
resource bundles, and numerous bugfixes. It now also includes a growing
set of JWebUnit-based "acceptance" tests to complement its existing unit
tests.

About: YAAPG (Yet Another but not just Any Playlist Generator) is a Perl
script to generate a random .mp3 playlist for your music player. It
randomly generates a playlist of MP3 music files into a convenient .m3u
file found in /albums of the YAAPG folder. It handles fixed as well as VBR
MP3s. Deep nesting of music files is supported; there is no need for
playlist preprocessing. There are no song repeats per playlist, and
repeats on successive runs are user-controlled with a history file
function.

[100] - Zero Install 0.1.12
  by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)
  Thursday, July 24th 2003 10:34

Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Filesystems

About: The Zero Install system removes the need to install software or
libraries by running all programs from a network filesystem. The
filesystem in question is the Internet as a whole, with an aggressive
caching system to make it as fast as (or faster than) traditional systems
such as Debian's APT repository, and to allow for offline use. It doesn't
require any central authority to maintain it, and allows users to run
software without needing a root password.

Changes: The mount point is now '/uri/0install', to allow sharing with
other URI schemes in the future. Index files are sent over the network
compressed. Debian packages are now available.
