[003] - Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy 0.3.2
  by John Hanna (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhanna777/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 15:33

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: The Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy (ASSP) Server project aims to create an
open source platform independent SMTP Proxy server which implements
whitelists and Bayesian filtering to help stop unsolicited commercial
email (UCE). Anti-spam tools should be adaptive to new spam and customized
for each site’s email patterns. This easy to use tool works with any mail
transport and achieves these goals requiring no operator intervention
after the initial setup phase.

Changes: This release contains a number of bugfixes, specifically with
regard to RunAsUser, chroot, move2num, and the Analyze admin page. It also
uses less RAM (about half) to rebuild the Bayesian database
(rebuildspamdb.pl). ASSP now recognizes the BDAT SMTP directive, a bug
which allowed some spam delivered to ESMTP servers that support CHUNKING
to pass through undetected. There are also minor enhancements to improve
spam detection, specifically in the way mail is pre-processed.

[012] - convmv 1.05
  by Björn Jacke (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjoernjacke/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 11:13

About: convmv converts filenames (not file content), directories, and
even whole filesystems to a different encoding. This comes in very handy
if, for example, one switches from an 8-bit locale to an UTF-8 locale. It
 has some smart features: it automagically recognises if a file is
already UTF-8 encoded (thus partly converted filesystems can be fully
moved to UTF-8) and it also takes care of symlinks. Additionally, it is
able to convert from normalization form C (UTF-8 NFC) to NFD and
vice-versa. This is important for interoperability with Mac OS X, for
example, which uses NFD, while Linux and most other Unixes use NFC. Though
it's primary written to convert from/to UTF-8 it can also be used with
almost any other charset encoding. Note that this is a command line tool
which requires at least Perl version 5.8.0.

Changes: There are some small fixes and documentation updates. This
release can execute any external command and check for the resulting file
length.

RTF) from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract
the code-structure from undocumented source files. This includes
dependency graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source code. This type
of information can be very useful to quickly find your way in large source
distributions.

Changes: This release generates XML schemas for validating the XML output.
A new debug flag was added to measure the time doxygen spends on various
things during run-time. A number of updates have been included and a

About: fli4l is a single-floppy Linux-based ISDN/DSL/ethernet-router. It
features configuration with some simple ASCII-files, several possible
connection-flavors (in/out/callback, and raw IP/PPP), channel bundling (an
extra channel can be added through a Windows/Unix-client), configuration
of multiple networks, least-cost routing, automatic choice of provider,
display/calculation of connection times and costs, and a Windows/Unix
client to control dial/hangup, monitor traffic and monitor incoming calls
on ISDN (see screenshot).

Changes: You can now specify MX entrys in the nameserver configuration.
The packet filter config is much-improved, and you can also switch to an
alternate configuration scheme for enhanced packet filter configuration.
Portforwarding now works with whitelists and you can forward a whole

About: Hasciicam makes it possible to have live ASCII video on the Web. It
captures video from a TV card and renders it into ASCII, formatting the
output into an HTML page with a refresh tag or in a live ASCII window or
in a simple text file as well, giving anyone that has a bttv card, a Linux
box, and a cheap modem line the ability to show a live asciivideo feed
that can be browsable without any need for a plugin, Java, etc.

Changes: An important fix to grab code is included, resulting in support
for most of the 2.4 Linux kernel drivers: grayscale is now taken from
YUV422 luminance instead of RGB sampling, which should also improve
performance on slower machines. The FTP code has been reimplemented with
ftplib, and passive mode connection is supported to stream from behind
firewalls. The code has been cleaned up a bit and aalib options directly

About: Hotani Web Template is a Web page template with discussions,
article posting ability, and polls. Once installed, it can be administered
from the page itself to make new polls, post articles, and create
discussion threads and new periodicals.

Changes: The "Admin" link is now displayed in top nav if an administrator
is logged in. Support was added for multiple instances of template when
only one database is available. Users now select their own password when
registering instead of having to receive an email before logging in and
changing it. A bug was fixed where users were unable to logout with some
browsers (cookie were not being deleted). The '.php3' version is currently
not available; since most servers are set up to allow both extensions
nowadays, the '.php' extension will be used exclusively.

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Just4Log is a library to dynamically enhance the performance of
various Java logging systems inside a Java application. The source code in
Java is not modified, but the optimization occurs on the compiled bytecode
files. It optimizes bytecode from Log4j, Apache Commons, and JDK 1.4
java.util.logging. It can also automatically add "enter" and "exit" logs
at every exit and entry point of methods. An Ant task offers integration
in Ant scripts.

Changes: This release supports Log4j and JDK 1.4 logging in addition to
Apache commons, automatically adds a Log statement to entry and exit
points of every method (you can disable this), and deals with subclassed
loggers. It has undergone a lot of refactoring.

[040] - makepp 1.19
  by Gary Holt (http://freshmeat.net/users/holt/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 00:58

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: makepp is a syntax-compatible reimplementation of make designed for
more reliable builds and simpler makefiles. It scans automatically for
include files, handles builds involving multiple directories in a much
simpler and more reliable fashion, supports transparently putting object
files in a different directory, can automatically import files from a
central repository, won't rebuild if only comments and indentation have
changed, knows to rebuild if the build commands change, has wildcards
which match files which don't exist yet but can be built, and can be
extended by embedding Perl code in the makefile.

Changes: This version reorganizes the documentation, includes a configure
script for installation, supports target-specific variable assignments,
supports the $(origin) function, adds the new functions $(find_upwards)
and $(relative_to), can inhibit importing files from repositories by
making a locally unreadable copy, and includes miscellaneous bugfixes.

[047] - mysqlBind 1.5
  by openisp (http://freshmeat.net/users/openisp/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 11:18

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: myqslBind manages multiple DNS/BIND (8 and 9) name servers. It
automates updates to multiple DNS servers, centralizes and stores all
zone and resource records for sets of related name servers
(ns0...nsN.yourisp.net), and even manages different name server sets
from a single browser-based interface. Unlimited master and slave name
servers update their zone information via a job queue system that uses
MySQL socket connections. Advanced operations can use mySQL replication
clusters for high availability and redundancy. Large ISPs and other
organizations should note that they can easily add SQL functions to
customize the program for their special needs. It supports
authentication via SSL Unix password login, SSL personal certificate, or
IP-based access with multiple permission levels and individual record
ownership. It is also compatible with mysqlISP.

Changes: External async jobqueue for the largest ISPs is now available.
Zone serial number increment now complies with the current BIND best
practices. A copy of the GPL is now included. There are many small

About: Petal helps maintain the owner, group, and mode on trees of files
by recalling this information from a configuration file. In turn, this
allows system administrators to separate the publication of files (e.g.
pulling system configurations from a change management system) from their
presentation (tweaking the owner/group/mode to satisfaction). If recursive
chown/chmod commands provide inadequate precision for your needs, Petal
may be the tool for you.

Changes: This release supports PostgreSQL databases as data stores, which
is achieved through the use of a new plugin-based architecture.

[066] - pyPgSQL 2.4 (Stable)
  by Bill Allie (http://freshmeat.net/users/bgallie/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 21:36

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries

About: pyPgSQL is a package of two modules that provide a Python DB-API
2.0 compliant interface to PostgreSQL databases. The first module, libpq,
exports the PostgreSQL C API to Python. This module is written in C, and
can be compiled into Python, or can be dynamically loaded on demand. The
second module, PgSQL, provides the DB-API 2.0 compliant interface, and
support for various PostgreSQL data types, such as INT8, NUMERIC, MONEY,
BOOL, ARRAYS, BYTEA, etc. This module is written in Python, and works with
PostgreSQL 7.0 or later, and Python 2.0 or later. Use of Python 2.1 or
later, and PostgreSQL 7.1 or later is highly recommended. NB: pyPgSQL was
previously released under the name 'PgSQL'.

Changes: PgTypes are now hashable, and PgNumeric support was improved. The
creation of large objects can now be rolled back, as it no longer
automatically performs a commit. Sub-classed String and long types are now
quoted properly. A possible buffer overrun condition in libPQquoteString
was fixed.

[069] - Rate 0.81
  by mteg (http://freshmeat.net/users/mteg/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 08:06

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Rate is a Swiss-Army-knife bandwidth measurement tool. Its primary
application is calculating the bandwidth used by packets matching a given
BPF packet filter expression, which can really help a network
administrator see what is happening at a software-based router at the
moment. Administrators can measure the traffic generated by a single host
or by a whole subnet, and measure HTTP traffic, broadcast traffic, quake
traffic, etc. It can also be used for generating per-IP statistics and for
determining nodes that generate highest traffic; it has a special
operation mode for it. Additionally, it is able to extract strings from
packets based on a POSIX regular expression.

Changes: All functionality has now been moved into a single binary.
Packets can now be filtered using a regular expression, in addition to BPF
filtering. This release adds a special operation mode for extracting
strings from packets (based on a given regex) and an option for an
alternative output format for "bandwidth abusers" mode, suitable for
gathering continuous statistics.

[078] - Sylpheed 0.9.4 (Main)
  by Hiroyuki Yamamoto (http://freshmeat.net/users/hiroy/)
  Friday, July 25th 2003 05:13

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)

About: Sylpheed is a GTK+ based, lightweight, and fast email client.
Almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard. It also has many
features such as multiple accounts, POP3/APOP support, thread display, and
multipart MIME. One of Sylpheed's future goals is to be fully
internationalized. The messages are managed in the MH format, so you'll be
able to use it together with another mailer that uses the MH format.

Changes: The performance of the operation of IMAP4 folders, such as move,
copy, delete, and mark, has been greatly improved. The contents of IMAP4
folders are now always synchronized with the server. Message flags are
now properly taken over when copying messages into IMAP4 folders from
others. The CRAM- MD5 authentication mechanism has been supported for
IMAP4rev1. Message move, copy, and delete are now possible while
receiving mails. The bug that ran into an infinite loop if connection was
closed by remote host has been fixed.

[084] - Turck MMCache for PHP 2.3.20

  Friday, July 25th 2003 05:10

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Turck MMCache is a PHP accelerator and encoder. It increases
performance of PHP scripts by caching them in a compiled state, so that
the overhead of compiling is almost completely eliminated. It also uses
some optimizations for speeding up PHP scripts' execution. It typically
reduces server load and increases the speed of PHP code by 1-10 times. It
is tested with PHP 4.1.0-4.3.2, and Apache 1.3 and 2.0 under Linux and
Windows.

Changes: In this version, an optimizer for ZE2 was implemented.
Optimization of extension_loaded() was fixed for encoded scripts. An
"mmcache.compress" configuration directive was added to enable or disable
cached content compression. "mmcache_password.php" and "encoder.php" now
work from both the Web and command line. Proper "__FILE__" handling in
encoded files was implemented. The PHP constant MMCACHE_VERSION was
introduced.

[085] - Uncle Unc 0.25.5

  Friday, July 25th 2003 05:06

Communications :: Email
Database :: Front-Ends
Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: Uncle Unc is a framework for working with trees of objects.
Existing services such as filesystems, code libraries, networks, log
files, mailboxes and directories can be mapped onto this object tree, as
can some traditional desktop applications. User interfaces work directly
with the object tree, offering best of breed interface design (e.g.
filtering, breadcrumb bars, paging, sorting, and file-explorer-like views)
across the full range of services. The framework promotes clean design,
completeness of representation, and reusability of both front end and back
end code.

Changes: Problems with the GroupTabPane widget have been resolved,
allowing it to automatically deduce what groupings an objects' fields,
methods, and children fall into if no hints are provided. The XML format
for persisting object trees has been modified to no longer require
ad-hoc tag names, allowing a formal DTD to be developed. (Ad hoc tags are
still supported by the reader for backwards compatibility.) A revised
third- party libraries bundle has been posted, as the previous version
was corrupt.

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: WebJob downloads a program over HTTP/HTTPS and executes it in one
unified operation. The output, if any, may be directed to stdout/stderr or
a Web resource. WebJob may be useful in incident response and intrusion
analysis as it provides a mechanism to run known good diagnostic programs
on a potentially compromised system. It can also support various
host-based monitoring solutions.

Changes: Generally, code was cleaned up and refined as necessary. The
configure/build process has been updated, and several new configure
options were added. The client-side filename format was changed to
webjob_hhhhhhhh.xxx. Also, the logic used to seed the random number
generator was modified to address an issue on NT/2K platforms. The major
event for this release, however, was the addition of MD5 and SHA1 hashing
support. This adds the ability to compute a message digest of a specified
file or stdin. Also, digests of the uploaded std{out,err} streams are now
recorded in the stdenv stream.

text-based user interfaces, a download manager for automating MP3
downloads, and a powerful music browser/playlist manager. Other features
include HTTP/RTP streaming playback with HTTP stream saving and title
streaming, and a fast, clean-sounding Open Source decoding engine. It
supports Win32/OSS sound systems, ALSA, and EsounD.

Changes: There are several new additions, including playlist time in the
status bar, drag and drop between playlists, and Vorbis writable tags
support. There are several other bugfixes and minor improvements as well.
