GUI Toolkits for The X Window System
by Leslie Polzer (mailto:leslie.polzergmx.net)
Section: Category Reviews
Sunday, July 27th 2003 00:00

This article is aimed at Unix developers who already have some experience
with programming languages and want to start developing GUI applications
(mainly for The X Window System, though portability is discussed). It may
also come in handy if you have used a particular GUI toolkit for some time
and want to know whether others might suit your needs better. The main
focus is comparison and introduction, but it serves as a bit of tutorial,
as well.

[001] - Advanced Assembler 0.9.0beta-3
  by Alexandre Becoulet (http://freshmeat.net/users/diaxen/)
  Sunday, July 27th 2003 07:44

Software Development :: Assemblers

About: Aasm is an advanced modular assembler designed to support several
target architectures. It has been designed to be easily extended. Its
global architecture takes advantages of dynamic libraries to provide
input, assembler and output modules. The input module supports Intel
syntax (like nasm, tasm, masm, etc.). The x86 assembler module supports
all opcodes up to P6 including MMX, SSE and 3DNow! extensions. F-CPU and
SPARC assembler modules are under development. Several output modules are
available for ELF, COFF, IntelHex, and raw binary formats. Advanced
features include symbol scopes, an expressions engine, big integer
support, macro capability, and numerous and accurate warning messages
(over 300).

Changes: More SPARC instructions have been added and more tests were
written.

  Sunday, July 27th 2003 05:55

Desktop Environment :: GNUstep
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Agent Farms is a system for modeling and simulation of complex,
multi-agent based systems. The system can be used for creating models of
multi-agent systems, interactive and distributed simulation, observation
and visualisation of the simulation, and population modification and
migration. On those models one can learn about the evolution of strategies
in the populations of agents.

Changes: This is another development snapshot. The object browser was
enhanced to allow browsing simulation objects and their relationships. A
simulation environment was created and an interface for creating objects
from prototypes in models was added. The example model was fixed. Several
bugs were fixed. The suite is now quite functional and ready to use.

Artistic Software
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis

About: Csound is a powerful and yet easy to use musical synthesis package.
Csound was constructed in the tradition of so-called music-N languages,
among which the best-known is Music V. It consists of an orchestra- and
score-driven executable, written in C for portability. Since Csound is a
computational language, it is highly flexible and efficient; complexity is
gained only at the expense of computation power. Basically, Csound reads
some files and creates the result as a sound file on disk or, on faster
machines, in real time through a DAC.

Changes: This version comes with extensive internal changes which allows
the use of 32-Bit variables (previously, only 16-bit indexes were used).
This allows for much larger and more complex instruments to be written.
It also comes with many new and modified opcodes, as well as lots of
bugfixes. It is now built as a shared library, and the Csound API has
been extensively revised with new functions and structures.

About: jMax is a visual programming environment for building interactive
real-time musical and multimedia applications by allowing the user to
interactively design dataflow circuits. The basic data types that can go
through are integers, symbols, lists, etc. It is an event-driven system
and has been used for MIDI processing. A second part of the system (DSP)
allows a continuous signal to flow through a circuit, which is most useful
for PCM sound (ie. microphone, sound files, etc.). The system is
extensible by using shared libraries, you may add data processor types,
data types, GUI elements, device types, and more. Data processors may also
be designed as circuits and reused.

[032] - Minimalist Queue Services 0.0.4
  by Alexandre Dulaunoy (http://freshmeat.net/users/adulau/)
  Sunday, July 27th 2003 22:14

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: MQS (Minimalist Queue Services) is a minimalist queueing system
that provides a set of basic methods in order to offer asynchronous
messaging for program/application. Applications can use this type of
services in order to store and retrieve messages to a dedicated queue in
the queue services. This allows you to avoid direct connection between
applications and provides a simple asynchronous communication system. It
provides a simple set of XML-RPC methods for pushing and getting messages
in a specific queue (so you can use the system with any application that
can talk XML-RPC). The queue is stored in a database (e.g., MySQL).

Changes: Support has been added for priority. A simple authentication and
access control scheme has been added. Simple documentation for the MQS API
is now included.

  by Heinz Knutzen (http://freshmeat.net/users/heinzknutzen/)
  Sunday, July 27th 2003 22:16

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: The Network Security Policy Compiler (NetSPoC) is a tool for
security management of large computer networks with different security
domains. It generates configuration files for packet filters controlling
the borders of security domains. It provides its own language for
describing security policy and the topology of a network. The security
policy is a set of rules that state which packets are allowed to pass the
network and which are not. NetSPoC is topology aware; a rule for traffic
from A to B is automatically applied to all managed packet filters on the
path from A to B.

Changes: Policies have been introduced. A policy is a named group of
related rules, which all refer to the same network objects in their source
or destination. The functionality of NetSPoC is available as a Perl module
now.
