  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 06:20

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: aptg(2) (a place to go) is a Web-based email client written in PHP,
using localhost connections to a running IMAP4 server. It is designed to
work with Postfix. Authentication is against a MySQL database as used by
pam_mysql (username + password) or by using one of the virtual email
addresses (also stored in the MySQL database) and that password. A
powerful addressbook is also included. It uses its own session handling
system with one-time session ids.

Changes: A bug which caused false mail display was fixed. The correct
default sender is now used when replying to a received mail. Some minor
code cleanups and restructuring were done.

Text Processing :: Markup

About: AFT (Almost Free Text) is a document preparation system. It is
mostly free form, meaning that there is little intrusive markup; AFT
source documents look a lot like plain old ASCII text. It has a few rules
for structuring your document, more to do with formatting your text than
embedding lots of commands, and it produces all types of output (HTML,
XHTML, LaTeX, roll-your-own XML, etc.). All that needs to be done is to
edit a rule file. You can even customize your own rule files for
specialized output.

Changes: In this version, users can now escape _,|, and ~ with a
backslash, there is support for relative URLs, and new and improved Lout
support has been added.

[013] - Clubmask Resource Manager 0.5b84
  by Nic Henke (http://freshmeat.net/users/henken/)
  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 10:29

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Clubmask is a 'glue' package that combines the outstanding
management and speed of the Bproc distributed process layer with the power
and configuration of the Maui HPC Scheduler. It uses the Supermon resource
monitor to gather node information. This node information is combined with
job submission data, and suplied to Maui. Maui issues job start and
termination commands which are handled by Clubmask via the Bproc layer.
Clubmask also supplies a 'supermon2ganglia' translator that allows
supermon data to be displayed in a ganglia Web frontend.

Changes: The main fixes made were to rework the SupermonInterface class by
adding a few new classes and splitting up the error handling in a sane
fashion. This should make the supermon data retrieval much more stable.
Also added is the ability to use either bpsh and/or ssh to each node to
really kill a job.

Changes: This version adds a switch to disable thick lines in X11, adds
runtime switching to full screen, adds different cursors for different
tools, adds a Blender-like 'remove doubles', fixes 'make install', adds
grid support, fixes a crash-bug with the user/ directory, fixes some

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than
a 0.03% chance of false positives.

Changes: This version fixes a process design flaw which caused
significantly high CPU utilization over a sustained period of time while
processing large (>6MB) attachments.

About: dxr3Player is a lightweight command line DVD player for Linux and
the DXR3 (aka Hollywood+) MPEG-2 decoder boards. It supports all major
DVD features, including menus, navigation, fast forward and backward
playback, subtitles, and camera angle changes. The player is very
conservative on memory usage and tries very hard (and mostly succeeds) to
keep video and audio in sync.

Changes: Infrared remote control support is added with the help of LIRC.
Some bugs were also fixed: the player attempts to open only the existing
titles, the size of the video output queue has been increased to avoid
skips during playback, and the aspect ratio is always changed when needed.

  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 10:28

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: File access statistics is a Perl script that can check the last
access time of your files. The script sorts the files in packages
(packages by file type). In a Debian Linux system it can sort the packages
using the Debian PacKaGe (DPKG) groups. The main usage of this script is
to detect which Debian packages are not used for a long time, so they can
be removed from the system.

Changes: In verbose mode ($show_all_files = 1), it will show a lot of
file-specific information using the stat() perl function.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: freecgi++ is an ANSI C++-compliant hierarchy for developing
object-oriented CGI applications. It supports FORMS, cookies, multi-part

Changes: variables.cgi was enhanced to display nice results and allow
query of the environment. Extra tracing code is added if built with
_DEBUG_DUMP_ and _FULL_DEBUG_. Parsing issues with post submits and IIS

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: FreeMarker is a template engine that was originally designed so
that servlet-based applications could keep graphical design separate from
application logic. The templates provide an easy and highly flexible way
to generate any kind of text output (HTML, RTF, PostScript, TeX, source
code, etc.) from a variety of data sources such as Java objects, Jython
objects, XML object models, and more.

Changes: This release cycle introduces significant new features for
processing and transforming XML documents. The new "visit" and "recurse"
directives have been introduced to enable XSLT-style recursive processing.
The template language now allows users to define functions with return
values. Variable interpolations in string literals are now supported. This
release improves XPath support significantly. Under many circumstances,
XPath queries should be more performant. Jaxen can be alternatively used
instead of Xalan. Also, the handling of XML namespaces was simplified.

[041] - Kodo JDO 2.5.2
  by Chox (http://freshmeat.net/users/neelan/)
  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 06:30

About: Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements
instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects standard
for transparent persistence. It is the most complete implementation of the
JDO specification for relational data stores, and comes with tools for
producing a schema from an object model, producing class files from an
existing schema, and a performance pack (distributed caching and statement
batching) that improves performance by 15 - 30 times. It supports most
relational databases, application servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total
coding effort by 20-40%.

Changes: Borland Enterprise Server is now supported. In addition, the J2EE
tutorial has been updated with detailed deployment instructions for Kodo
as a JCA Resource Adapter. The ability to use database-specific outer join
syntax was added. Oracle 8i outer joins were coded into an Oracle
dictionary. The included distribution of Apache Commons Logging is now
1.0.3. The UsePreparedStatements option has been removed: prepared
statements are now always used for all drivers. A problem in which
AutoIncrementSequenceFactory was not working for SQL Server was fixed.

[056] - Node Data System (libnds) 2.1.1 (Version 2 (C++))
  by Haplo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mindstab/)
  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 18:13

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Node Data System (libnds) is a cross platform library that
dynamically manages data. It comes in two flavours, version 1 in C using a
node structure, and version 2 in C++ using a node class. Libnds has a
simple to use API that allows powerful management of data, and also
supports simple and complex file I/O for saving and retrieving data.

Changes: A lot of much needed memory and node managment functions were
added (for moving and copying memory and nodes). NDS now gives you some
fairly broad and powerful control over the data stored in it. NDS2 is
considered featured complete. Development will now move on to a new
branch.

  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 22:42

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming
language. It combines remarkable power with very clear syntax, and isn't
difficult to learn. It has modules, classes, exceptions, very high level
data types, and dynamic typing. There are interfaces to many system calls

About: The Distributed Library Project is a distributed library of
people's books and videos, an experiment in creating community and sharing

enumerations, then list the books and videos that they own. Those users
are then free to browse the books that others have listed, sorted by
proximity, interest, and book commonality. If a book or video is
available, a user can check it out directly from the owner. There is an
eBay-style feedback system for managing trust--users who return books on
time get positive feedback, while users who damage books or return them
late get negative feedback. These points create an overall "score" that
lenders can use to judge the trustworthiness of a borrower. The system
also supports user reviews, ISBN lookups, and collaboritve filtering.

[096] - Xfstt 1.5
  by Guillem Jover (http://freshmeat.net/users/guillemj/)
  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 00:24

Desktop Environment :: Fonts

About: Xfstt means "X11 Font Server for TrueType fonts". TrueType fonts
are generally regarded to be the best scalable fonts for low resolution
devices like screens. Examples where good scalable fonts improve the
visual quality considerably are Mozilla, GIMP, and Java. A
fonts.properties file for use with Java is provided.

Changes: This version fixes multiple buffer overflows in the network
packet handling code (CAN-2003-0581). A new encoding, ISO8859-14, is
included. The hardcoded dir locations have been moved to configure space,
and it now mkdirs the fontdir and cachedir in the make install target.
The error messages when the cachedir does not exist have been improved.
The --gslist dependency on order of arguments was removed. dprintfN was
replaced with a debug function. Indentation and minor source cosmetic
changes have been made. There were improvements to the documentation and
examples.

[098] - ZZIPlib 0.10.82
  by Guido Draheim (http://freshmeat.net/users/guidod/)
  Tuesday, July 29th 2003 13:33

System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: ZZIPlib provides read access on ZIP-archives. The library uses only
the patent-free compression-algorithms supported by zlib. Functions are
provided that transparently access files being either real files or zipped
files, both with the same filepath. The zip-archive can be used in the
place of a normal subdirectory. It is written in portable C.

Changes: Types of function prototypes have been reworked. There is no
change for ILP32 platforms but better support for others. MSVC6 support is
enhanced, including prebuilt binaries. IO/Ext features are completed, and
there are some bugfixes.
