Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Abeni is a Gentoo Linux ebuild GUI editor written in
Python/wxPython. It helps users create syntactically correct ebuilds
efficiently. It incorporates the Scintilla editor for syntax highlighting
and Lintool for syntax checking.

Changes: SourceForge support is now much better: if you give a SRC_URI
with "sourceforge" in it, it will convert it to
mirror://sourceforce/package/... and guess the HOMEPAGE. A major fix was
made to the responsiveness of the GUI when doing emerge and ebuild
commands. wxProcess is now used instead of the cheesy DoIdle/wxYield
method. Makefile, environment, and configure files are automatically
opened if they exist. An external editor option was added to the
preferences dialog and configuration file.

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: Borges is an open-source project aimed at XML-aware documentation
projects which care about internationalisation, reusable contents,
teamwork, etc. The system currently support the DocBook DTD.

Changes: Automatically commit other languages new translation revhistory
when a module is set "write". Committing modules is now allowed when XRefs
are broken. A "publish" target was added in Makefile.root to allow
automatic generation and publishing of reports and outputs. The
"sendmails" target was added in Makefile.reports to allow automatic
generation and delivering of tasks emails. Openjade related paths were
defined in conf/DocBook.xml. The backend/scatter_ids.pl script now detects
existing automatic IDs. If a module is not sync when a new release occurs,
then all IDs are removed without reassigning them.

[013] - cpudyn 0.4.2
  by gallir (http://freshmeat.net/users/gallir/)
  Thursday, July 31st 2003 20:26

System :: Monitoring

About: cpudyn controls the speed in Intel SpeedStep, Pentium 4 Mobile, and
PowerPC machines with the cpufreq compiled in the kernel. It saves
battery, lowers temperature, and can put the computer disks in standby
mode if a given period has passed without any I/O operation. It works well
even with journaled file systems such as Ext3, XFS, or ReiserFS.

Changes: A nasty bug was found in kernel 2.6 disks's stat parser. Stand-by
works for more than one disk (unlimited in theory). Cpufreq works on the
P4. All fopen/fread/fwrite/fgets were changed to open/read/write to avoid
frequent malloc/free calls..

[014] - CWirc 0.9.2
  by Pierre-Philippe Coupard
(http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrephilippecoupar/)
  Thursday, July 31st 2003 20:30

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Communications :: Ham Radio

About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, or
using the mouse buttons, and the sound is played through the sound card,
or through an external sounder.

Changes: The automatic morse decoder has been corrected and extended to
include prosigns. Schematics to build a CW oscillator driven by a serial
port and to connect a morse key to a serial port have been added.

[015] - darcs 0.9.12
  by David Roundy (http://freshmeat.net/users/droundy/)
  Thursday, July 31st 2003 06:00

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS
or arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from
other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully
functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful theory
of patches (the latter being darcs' most important feature).

Changes: A number of bugs were fixed and repository locking during writes
was implemented. Scaling when operating on large repositories was
improved, and support for binary files was added. Various minor and not
so minor bugs were fixed, and miscellaneous interface enhancements were
made.

  Thursday, July 31st 2003 05:50

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Networking

About: dnspython is a DNS toolkit for Python. It supports almost all of
the record types. It can be used for queries, zone transfers, and dynamic
updates. It supports TSIG authenticated messages and EDNS0. dnspython
provides both high and low level access to DNS. The high level classes
perform queries for data of a given name, type, and class, and return an
answer set. The low level classes allow direct manipulation of DNS zones,
messages, names, and records.

Changes: Zones now have find_rrset() and find_rdataset() convenience
methods. Nodes no longer have a name field. Zones implement more of the
standard Python mapping API.

Desktop Environment :: Application Themes

About: EzSDK is a PHP SDK which includes a PHP source code generator, a
library of PHP classes, and an application environment consisting of
premade supporting modules. The modules handle user application and data
access security, DB compatibility (with MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, etc.), a
built-in GUI interface with an interactive desktop, and more.

Changes: The development suite now includes an SQL Editor. This editor
works through the system's Data Dictionary, and therefore can be used
against any DB. It allows the developer to interactively build SQL
statements and test run them. Developers can save their SQL statements to
a file for use in source, or create a CSV file interactively as well. The
developer also has the ability to open different SQL statements in
multiple screens. This is all done through the browser interface provided
by EzSDK.

The master server exposes its object space to its first-level clients,
which in turn provide mirroring facilities to second-level clients and
also export their own object spaces. Each client therefore plays a role of
a client, a proxy, and a server. Infrastructure for propagation and
broadcasting of method invocation requests is provided and is general
enough to allow for an efficient access control. Synchronization of object
spaces is achieved via streaming of object graphs and a time-ordered
delivery of method invocation requests. Objects can acquire their own
threads to perform different tasks such as computation, data acquisition &
analysis or dynamic visualization. The obtained results can be pushed to
other computing nodes or storage devices. As threads are spawned and
controlled by standard method invocation requests, schedulers & job
control mechanisms spawning across a whole Gled cluster can easily be
implemented. On viewer level, Gled features automatically generated GUI
widgets (using FLTK) and a sophisticated 3D rendering infrastructure
(OpenGL).

Changes: The program is now POSIX threads compliant, removing the
dependence on LinuxThreads. The server protocol for accepting connections
was rewritten to allow for future upgrades. Some new classes and
features were added to the Geom1 libset (textured spheres, better support
for GL texturing). The layout of the FTP distribution directory was
improved and the building procedure is now more standard. Some other
minor enhancements and fixes were also made.

About: IPFS (IPSquad Package From Source) is a system which allows you to
trace an program's installation from sources and register it in your
favorite packaging system (only the Slackware package system and RPM are
currently supported). IPFS watches a command (generally make install),
collects the list of added files, and then registers them in the chosen
packaging system as if the install was made from a normal package. Unlike
other similar products, IPFS is able to track both shared and statically
linked programs.

Changes: IPFS now ensures that the selected output is valid before
installation. File permissions are now correct and the code was cleaned

[036] - Java Serialization to XML 2 2.0.9.6
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Thursday, July 31st 2003 05:56

Communications
Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.

Changes: This release halves the jar size and also fixes a problem with
serializing collections.

Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHPlist is a mailing list system that allows posting via a Web
page. It works well when used for announcements, and can handle very large
email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists, but will only
receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing up, users can
identify their geographical location, and messages can be targetted to
these. You can add place holders in your email that will be replaced with
personal details (such as the person's name). Users can update their own
information, and unlike many other mailing list systems, they can change
their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Changes: The requirement for register globals in PHP to be on has been
removed. You can now import from an IMAP account. The FCKeditor was
integrated for use in creating HTML messages, and quite a few bugs were
fixed.

album data is stored in XML. Pixory displays image metadata such as the
EXIF information embedded in image files by most digital cameras and
scanners.

Changes: Photos can now be marked "private". Private photos are completely
invisible to Album "Viewers". Albums can now have a "display name"

Security
System :: Monitoring

About: WifiScanner is an analyzer and detector of 802.11b stations and
access points. It can listen alternatively on all the 14 channels, write
packet information in real time, can search access points and associated
client stations, and can generate a graphic of the architecture using

analysis. It works under Linux with a PrismII or CISCO card and with the
linux-wlan, hostap, or Aironet driver

Changes: A bug which occurred when the -H13 option is passed was
corrected. A man page was added. The -t option is now specified in
milliseconds, not in microseconds. Max speed available is now printed at
the end summary. An option was added to disable support for saving data in
pcap format. Full autotools compliance was added. Some bad debug output
was removed. A spectral histogram was added. The abstraction layer fully
works with the cisco, cisco_cvs, prism2, and host drivers.
