  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 23:18

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release features two new commands, %%gchordbox and
%%measurefont, and fixes several minor bugs.

[005] - Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module 1.8
  by Network Dweebs Corporation (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzdziarski/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 16:52

Security

About: The Apache DoS Evasive Maneuvers Module is a module for both Apache
1.3 and 2.0 that provides functionality for detecting and fighting off DoS
attacks and brute force attacks. It does this by adding addresses to a
10-second '403 List' and rejecting rapidly repeated requests for the same
URL from the same addresses, using an internal hash table, on a per-child
basis. This module can be configured to talk to ipchains, ipfilter, or any
other tool designed to push the attack out to the network layer, and
provides email notification in the event of an attack.

Changes: Support for whitelisting IP addresses or ranges has been added.

System :: Installation/Setup
Utilities

About: apt-iselect is a small wrapper for "apt-cache search" and "apt-get
install" which uses iselect to search and install packages. Special care
has been taken to make this tool easy and fast to use. It is generally
several times faster than using aptitude for this task.

Changes: Search words are now highlighted in package details, apt-iselect
will now work with all POSIX compliant shells (tested with dash and ash),
and support has been added for using su if sudo is not installed.

[007] - Astaro Security Linux 4.011 (Stable 4.x)
  by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 04:17

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Astaro Security Linux is a firewall solution. It does stateful
packet inspection filtering, content filtering, user authentication, virus
scanning, spam protection, VPN with IPSec (PKI for X.509 certificates) and
PPTP, Wireless LAN, VLAN, PPPoE, PPPoA, and much more. With its Web-based
management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability to pull updates via the
Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based on a special hardened
Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are running in change-roots and
are protected by kernel capabilities.

Changes: This Up2Date added LOGACCEPT to packet filtering and year support
for log files. It also fixed the WebAdmin port after importing a backup,
the Autofilter bug with PSK authentication, an iptables rules/DNSproxy
settings conflict when the proxy was disabled, and a PPTP daemon
connection limitation. The POP3 proxy was fixed for clients that didn't
terminate connections properly.

  Monday, September 1st 2003 23:14

About: BeanShell is an embeddable scripting language. In addition to
interpreting standard Java code, it extends Java into the scripting
domain in a natural way by adding loose types, method closures, commands,
and other obvious scripting language features. Scripted classes appear
to outside Java code and by introspection as ordinary classes but are
fully dynamic and may include arbitrary scripts in their bodies, methods,
and constructors.

[011] - Bontmia 0.12
  by John Enok Vollestad (http://freshmeat.net/users/fluffe/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 10:19

Internet
System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Bontmia is a network-based backup tool that saves configurable
numbers of last month, week, day, hour, and minute backups. Each backup
is a complete snapshot of the original directories, and only new and
changed files take up space when generating snapshots because of the use
of hard links. Remote access is secure by using SSH. Only changes are
transferred, which makes for a fast backup.

Changes: The options have been changed by request. Which filters are
applied to which backup is now visible. A dry run option has been added.
The reverse lookup has been removed, as it resulted in hostnames of zero
length when reverse lookups were not supported by the ISP. There is some
cleanup.

[013] - Charles Web Debugging Tool 1.6
  by karl (http://freshmeat.net/users/karlvr/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 23:18

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Charles is a Web debugging tool, HTTP monitor, and reverse HTTP
proxy for Web developers that includes plain text debugging of HTTPS/SSL.
It is built in Java Swing, and runs on all Java platforms. It is an HTTP
proxy server that displays requests and responses, complete with HTTP
headers. This enables the developer to examine the exact content of HTTP
exchanges, including cookies, caching, and redirects. It can also throttle
your connection in order to simulate modem conditions.

Changes: This version completes HTTP/1.1 support (keep alives, gzip,
compress, and chunking). Response header sizes are now reported. There
are performance enhancements and bugfixes. There are new separate
recording limits for different content types.

[014] - CodeWorker 2.17.4

  Monday, September 1st 2003 04:11

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. An extended BNF syntax allows the definition of new
domain-specific languages or parsing existing formats. A template-based
syntax like PHP and JSP allows the writing of patterns for generating
code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected areas with
hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source translation,
and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a straightforward
process, with no binding to an external programming language and with no
translation of requirements specification in a constraining format.

Changes: A problem where Ada comments were also admitted when parsing C++
comments was fixed. A mode that allows for the detection of Doxygen
comments was added (the skipEmptyCppExceptDoxygen() function or the BNF
directive "#ignore(C++/Doxygen)").

[015] - Colloquy Talker Server 1.26.519
  by nunfestishist (http://freshmeat.net/users/nunfetishist/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 10:10

Communications :: Chat

About: colloquy is an Internet talker server. It lets people all around
the world talk to each other in real time. It is inspired by The Nilex
Talker and Egham Hills, a popular "technical" talker in the UK. It is
explicitly designed not to have "socials" and "custom rooms" and other
bloat that just gets in the way of idle chat like many other talker
servers.

Changes: This release has a lot of cleanup, speed improvements, many new
commands, and enhancements to others. It has .LWho, .LastOn, and many
other tweaks.

[016] - Compact Disc Input and Control Library 0.63
  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 16:53

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control. Applications wishing to be oblivious of the OS- and
device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM can use this library. Some support
for disk image types like BIN/CUE and NRG is available, so applications
that use this library also have the ability to read disc images as though
they were CDs. A sample utility for displaying CD info is included.

Changes: A number of additions are in this release: a library to assist in
ISO-9660 manipulation, a library routine to analyze/guess the type of CD
or CD image, and more example programs. The program cd-info can now list
the files of a ISO-9660 filesystem via the option --iso9660.

[018] - CoverViewer 0.1.11pre1 (Prerelease)
  by caligari77 (http://freshmeat.net/users/Caligari77/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 09:00

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: CoverViewer is an XMMS plugin that displays images related to the
files being played. The displayed image can be a copy of the cover of the
album you are playing or anything else you want. It creates a personalised
skin for itself using the current XMMS skin, and you can control song
playing from its interface. It includes a function that can automatically
retrieve covers you don't have from the Internet, using file tag
information to get the artist and album name.

Changes: A "Cover Management" feature, which is accessible from the
right-click menu, is now provided to easily add and delete covers while
playing. An information window was added to explain what is going on while
downloading covers. A new search site has been added (www.coveralia.com)
and another one (www.cdcover.nl) was removed since it now needs a username
and password. The "skin mode" now features a button for opening files
(Eject button).

[027] - FastParser 1.6.1
  by Alexandre Brillant (http://freshmeat.net/users/abrillant/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 13:11

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Fast Parser is a high performance Java XML parser. Benchmarks
measure it to be up to 100%+ faster than Xerces and the JDK1.4 integrated
parser. It is ideal for Web services (SOAP) and XSL. The core parsing
package (without DOM) is very compact. It features SAX Level 1 and 2
compliance, JAXP compatibility, namespace support, integration with
JXMLPad for real time parsing, modular libraries, an embedded device mode
(including minimal memory usage), optional XML Comment support, CDATA
support, the ability to include any node type with a custom NodeFactory,
and a walker for easily navigating through XML trees. Many API samples and
benchmark tests are included. JDK1.1 or later is required.

Changes: This releases corrects supports for DOM with the JDK1.1. A bug
has been corrected for ISO-8859-1 characters whose value is over 128.
Runtime errors inside handlers like SAX are now cached inside of a
specific ParseException.

[030] - gimp-print 4.3.20 (Development)
  by Robert Krawitz (http://freshmeat.net/users/rlk/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 16:51

Multimedia :: Graphics
Printing
System :: Hardware

About: Gimp-Print is a collection of very high quality printer drivers for
UNIX/Linux. The goal of this project is uncompromising print quality and
robustness. Included with this package is the Print plugin for the GIMP
(hence the name), a CUPS driver, and two drivers (traditional and
IJS-based) for Ghostscript that may be compiled into that package. This
driver package is Foomatic-compatible and provides Foomatic data to enable
plug and play with many print spoolers. In addition, various printer
maintenance utilities are included. Many users report that the quality of
Gimp-Print on high end Epson Stylus printers matches or exceeds the
quality of the drivers supplied for Windows and Macintosh.

Changes: This release's primary focus is greatly improved print quality,
particularly for Epson Stylus printers. The color correction has been
extensively modified and should produce much more accurate and consistent
color. In addition, many Epson printers (including most recent ones) have
been retuned to give improved quality at lower resolutions, so that 720
DPI will often produce sufficient quality for photo printing and save much
time. In addition, experimental support for some Olympus printers has been
added.

  Monday, September 1st 2003 03:59

Office/Business
Printing

About: KBarcode is a barcode and label printing application for KDE 3. It
can be used to print everything from simple business cards up to complex
labels with several barcodes, such as article descriptions. KBarcode comes
with an easy-to-use WYSIWYG label designer, a setup wizard, batch import
of labels (directly from the delivery note), thousands of predefined
labels, database managment tools, and translations in many languages. Even
printing more than 10,000 labels in one go is no problem for KBarcode.
Additionally, it is a simple xbarcode replacement for the creation of
barcodes. All major types of barcodes like EAN, UPC, CODE39, and ISBN are
supported.

Changes: TBarcode can now be used as a barcode rendering backend. Almost
every important 1D and 2D barcode is now supported. A barcode disk cache
was added, and a CSV file import wizard was included, making it easier to
import data from SQL tables. PDF417 settings such as error correction can
now be configured, and the preview page size can be set to any paper
format (not only A4). Many other improvements and fixes were also made.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Penguin Greetings is a Perl Web-based greeting card application. It
can be run as standard CGI application or persistently with SpeedyCGI and
supports multiple, independent ecard sites running on the same server. By
using multi-part MIME email, it is intended to make ecards more like

Emailing and database updates are performed by a separate daemon, and
extensive documentation is included along with over 100 cards.

Changes: A new testing framework for application configuration variables

configuration file, was also added. A bug that caused the pgreet UID and
GID to be installed as a string instead of a number was fixed. This bug

Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHPlist is a mailing list system that allows posting via a Web
page. It works well when used for announcements, and can handle very large
email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists, but will only
receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing up, users can
identify their geographical location, and messages can be targetted to
these. You can add place holders in your email that will be replaced with
personal details (such as the person's name). Users can update their own
information, and unlike many other mailing list systems, they can change
their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Changes: Some improvements for systems that have multiple administrators.
A default permissions set and the ability for sub-admins to change their
password. The RSS capability has been improved with process locking and
more reporting.

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: PKIT is a Java toolkit for performing common PKI related tasks. It
currently can be used to sign a cert in a well formed manner for various
uses: non repudiation, key encipherment, data encipherment, cert signing,
generating certifcate reqequests, importing and exporting certs from
keystores similar to 'keytool', and converting keystores from one format
to another.

Changes: An ant script is now used to run the examples. Most of the CRL
generation stuff was fixed. You can now use and generate any keystore for
which you have a provider (tested with JKS and BC PKCS12). More sensible
constructors are provided in the signer class. A utility for converting
from one keystore type to another was added, and the build file was
improved by adding a release target and a couple of other things. The
CertificateTool class is now a useful command line application. pkit now
uses Bouncy Castle 1.19. The JavaDoc was updated.

About: qingy is a replacement for getty. It uses DirectFB to provide a
fast, nice GUI without the overhead of the X Windows System. It allows the
user to log in and start the session of his choice (text console, GNOME,
KDE, wmaker, etc.).

Changes: TTY ownership is now correctly changed. Hopefully, this will
solve the PAM issues. An option to close DirectFB mode before shutting
down was added so that you can see your system shutdown messages. An
option for hiding the last user name was added. An option for hiding
password characters completely was added. Pressing ENTER in the username
field now moves the cursor to the password field. qingy now reverts back
to text mode login if something goes wrong with DirectFB. The "Login

[065] - RoadMap 1.0
  by Pascal Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/pascalmartin/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 21:15

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: RoadMap is a GIS program for Unix that displays street maps. The
maps are provided by the US Census Bureau, and thus only cover the US.
Specific areas are displayed by selecting a street address (street number,
street name, city, and state). It interfaces with gpsd to track a GPS
position, and has been designed to be usable on both a desktop or laptop
computer, or on a PDA.

Changes: This version is by no means bug free. It just looks stable enough
and featureful enough. Support was added for downloading maps using the
HTTP protocol (i.e. from Web sites). Support was added for downloading
compressed map files (gzip, bzip2, and lzop). A crash which occurred when
downloading a map while receiving GPS data was fixed. The trip direction
arrow now correctly follows the GPS icon when panning.

reduce the disk space required.

Changes: Anonymous rsync snapshots are now supported. This version
reverted back to the tried and true method of deleting the old snapshots
instead of recycling the oldest ones, which is more space efficient. When
creating a "snapshot root", the program now chmods it 0700 to make sure no

About: RSSOwl is a SWT-based GUI desktop client that reads RSS files from
a URL or a local file. A tab folder shows RSS channel information and the
headings of the selected feed. After selecting a news item, users can read
the description and open the news in a tab using an integrated browser.
Full-text searching and keyword highlighting are supported. Favorites can
be saved within unlimited nested categories. It also supports printing,
saving news feeds locally, subscriptions, and sharing news feeds with
others, and includes English, German and French translations.

Changes: Web browsers are now supported and open as a tab. It is now
possible to subscribe to a local or remote file that holds categories and
favorites, making it possible to share RSS and RDF feeds with others. You
can create subscriptions for other people and export selected categories.
Unlimited nesting of categories, favorites, and subscriptions is now
supported, and a new pop-up menu was added to manage them. The program can
now be minimized to the system tray. A French translation was added, and a

  Monday, September 1st 2003 04:19

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern
matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and
ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive
compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that
allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the
only known platform independent "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
contact any OS as server.

Changes: A new command line program, spax, gives a new POSIX compliant
user interface to star. All pax features that differ from tar features are
also available from star command line by specifying a -pax-* option. It
will never get all the features of star, but was introduced to provide a
POSIX compliant command line for users that expect it (to make LSB Linux
POSIX.1-2001 compliant, for instance).

Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Samizdat is a generic RDF-based engine for building collaboration
and open publishing Web sites. It will let everyone publish, view,
comment, edit, and aggregate text and multimedia resources, vote on
ratings and classifications, filter resources by flexible sets of
criteria, and cooperate and coordinate on all kinds of activities. It
intends to promote values of freedom, openness, equality, and cooperation.

Changes: This version allows you to upload multimedia messages, including
images and verbatim plain text, and introduces publishing of user-defined
queries in the form of "application/x-squish" messages. When migrating
from older versions, you have to drop and recreate your database from
scratch because of an incompatible database schema change (content is now
stored as a BLOB). In addition, the file upload feature uses the StringIO
module, which is available as part of Ruby 1.8 or can be installed
separately from the Ruby Shim library for Ruby 1.6.

[070] - SCMxx 0.6.4
  by Hendrik Sattler (http://freshmeat.net/users/hsattler/)
  Monday, September 1st 2003 04:21

Communications :: Telephony

About: SCMxx is a console program that allows you to exchange certain
types of data with mobile phones made by Siemens. Some of the data types
that can be exchanged are logos, ring tones, vCalendars, vCards, phonebook
entries, and SMS messages. It works with the following phones: S25, C35i,
M35i, S35i, ME45, S45, SL45, M50, and probably some others, too. It
basically uses the AT command set published by Siemens (with some other
additional resources).

Changes: This version added a UCS-2 phonebook transfer mode (default, with
a GSM fallback). It now correctly gets the range for phone book CS and RD
and requests only 5 entries at a time to prevent timeouts with slow phones
and SIM cards. It also fixed some other small bugs.

[081] - Ultra-Performance UDPForwarder 3.0

  Monday, September 1st 2003 10:34

Games/Entertainment
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: UDPForwarder listens on multiple ports to forward incoming UDP
datagrams from clients to the corresponding server and forwards the
server's response back to the client. This works 100% transparently, so
clients think they are talking to the forwarder and the server does not
notice the clients' real IP. It was initially designed to work as a
transparent relay for online game traffic (static routing). It might be
useful for hiding IPs or tricking firewalls. Its motivation and advantage
over existing tools is its uncompromising focus on performance, which is
crucial when dealing with hundreds and thousands of datagrams per second
without allowing any rise in response time.

Changes: Multi-destination forwarding (previously you needed one instance
per destination), local NIC selection for each tunnel, user-defined packet
block policies, a user-defined client timeout, and config files.

Text Processing :: Filters

About: wv2 is a portable MS Word .doc import filter. Currently, it
supports MS Word 6, MS Word 95, MS Word 97, MS Word 2000, and MS Word 2002
(a.k.a XP) documents. Older versions like Word 2, 3, 4, and 5 aren't
supported for now, but it's quite likely that they will be supported at
some point.

Changes: This is the first bugfix release since support for Word 6 and
Word 7 documents has been introduced. The list handling for Word 8 files
has been fixed, and support for Word 6 and Word 7 style lists has been
added. To make wv2 less noisy in production, the configure flag
--disable-debug has been added, which disables almost all output.
Additionally, wv2 now recovers as much text as possible from documents
using undefined characters of the CP12xy codepages.
