[016] - Change Password Utility 1.4.1
by Blake Matheny (http://freshmeat.net/users/matheny/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 03:00
Security
System
System :: Networking
About: Change Password Utility (CPU) gives system administrators the
ability to administer users and groups on a wide range of backends,
currently including LDAP and flat files. Simply, CPU is for user and group
administration. The commandline is almost completely compatible with
existing Linux user and group management tools, so it can easily be
dropped in place. It supports several different hashing algorithms and
allows existing users to be imported from Unix-style passwd and shadow
files into the backend of your choice.
Changes: It is now possible to violate POSIX naming conventions (for use
with Samba) with the -o switch. User operations now work exactly the same
way as the GNU shadow-utils with respect to groups. When a user is deleted
they are now removed from any secondary groups they were in. When a user's
secondary groups are modified, they are removed from old secondary groups
and added to new secondary groups. When a user's primary group is changed
they are no longer added to that group via a memberUid. Several bugfixes
were also made.

[018] - Clustered JDBC 1.0beta 11
by Nicolas Modrzyk (http://freshmeat.net/users/modrzyk/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 13:27
Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Database :: Front-Ends
About: Clustered JDBC is to databases what RAID is for disks. C-JDBC
provides transparent database clustering (partitioning, replication, etc.)
to any Java application through JDBC. It works with any Java application
without code modification and with any database engine. C-JDBC has been
successfully tested with Tomcat, JBoss, JOnAS, MySQL, PostgreSQL, HSQL,
SAP DB, Oracle, Sybase, and more.
Changes: Support for loading the controller configuration from an XML file
has been added. The database schema is now dynamically updated. RMI
communication between the driver and controller has been removed.
Implementations of Statement.execute(sql) and Statement.getMoreResults()
have been added (used by SQuirreL SQL). The new JDBC URL format is used
for connection to C-JDBC. Driver connection problem error messages have
been improved. Saving of the current controller configuration has been
added. There are many bugfixes.

Monday, September 22nd 2003 03:40
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable,
tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of
automation. An extended BNF syntax allows the definition of new
domain-specific languages or parsing existing formats. A template-based
syntax like PHP and JSP allows the writing of patterns for generating
code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected areas with
hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source translation,
and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a straightforward
process, with no binding to an external programming language and with no
translation of requirements specification in a constraining format.
Changes: ceil(), log(), and exp() functions were added. Bugfixes were made
to the grammar of the scripting language.

[021] - doxygen 1.3.4
by Dimitri van Heesch (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvh/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 15:29
Software Development
Software Development :: Documentation
About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, C, C#, Java, IDL, and PHP. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line
class browser (in HTML) and/or an off-line reference manual (in LaTeX or
RTF) from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract
the code-structure from undocumented source files. This includes
dependency graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source code. This type
of information can be very useful to quickly find your way in large source
distributions.
Changes: The search engine doxywizard has been replaced by a PHP script
that is generated by doxygen. This simplifies setting up the search
facility. The routine that turns names into links has changed. This can
significantly speed up doxygen in projects with many namespaces, typedefs,
or Java packages, and also prevents wrong links in a number of cases. Dot
graphs can now be put inside a comment block. A number of bugs have been
fixed as well.

About: Enchant is a cross-platform abstract layer for spell-checking. It
is a meta spell-checking framework. It recognizes that different
languages often require radically different tools and alogrithms to
spell-check and correct. It also takes into account that systems often
have a radical host of spell- checking software installed. It provides a
standard C API/ABI for all of its backends, while allowing multiple

completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the
program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.
Changes: When mp3gain was unable to complete a gain change (such as when

[064] - Prelude Log Monitoring Lackey 0.8.4
by yoann (http://freshmeat.net/users/yoann/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 16:07
Internet :: Log Analysis
Security
System :: Logging
About: The Prelude Log Monitoring Lackey (LML) is the host-based sensor
program part of the Prelude Hybrid IDS suite. It can act as a centralized
log collector for local or remote systems, or as a simple log analyzer
(such as swatch). It can run as a network server listening on a syslog
port or analyze log files. It supports logfiles in the BSD syslog format
and is able to analyze any logfile by using the PCRE library. It can apply
logfile-specific analysis through plugins such as PAX. It can send an
alert to the Prelude Manager when a suspicious log entry is detected.
Changes: This release removes the bogus pcre.h test in configure, makes
sure there is always a target hostname to use in an alert, avoids
duplicate rotation alerts, analyzes the file from the beginning in case
there was a rotation or a checksum error, uses the new libprelude
IPv6-aware function to populate Node and Address members, fixes a possible
crash with metadata handling, and adds a new IPChains and Vigor xDSl
router ruleset.

[065] - Prelude Manager 0.8.8
by yoann (http://freshmeat.net/users/yoann/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 15:50
Security
System :: Monitoring
About: Prelude Manager is the main program of the Prelude Hybrid IDS
suite. It is a multithreaded server which handles connections from the
Prelude sensors. It is able to register local or remote sensors, let the
operator configure them remotely, receive alerts, and store alerts in a
database or any format supported by reporting plugins, thus providing
centralized logging and analysis. It also provides relaying capabilities
for failover and replication. The IDMEF standard is used for alert
representation. Support for filtering plugins allows you to hook in
different places in the Manager to define custom criteria for alert
relaying and logging.
Changes: This release avoids inserting quoted NULL entries in the
database, which the client would interpret as being valid, adds a MacOS X
port, supports both Ipv6 and Ipv4 connections, supports dumping ECNECHO
and CWR flags when they are set in the prelude-nids decoding plugin, and
tries to speed DB access by setting some INDEXes. It fixes the Pgsql
database creation script, a bug which caused ip_len to always be dumped as
being 0 in the prelude-nids decoding plugin, a crash in the Xml plugin on
systems using libxml 2.5.8, a possible assertion failure in the Passive OS
Fingerprinting code, and insertion of correlated alerts.

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Prelude NIDS is the network-based sensor program part of the
Prelude Hybrid IDS suite. It provides network monitoring with fast pattern
matching (Boyer-Moore) to detect attacks against a network. It includes
advanced mechanisms such as a generic signature engine which is able to
understand any ruleset as long as there is a dedicated parser, protocol
and detection analysis plugins featuring Telnet, RPC, HTTP, and FTP
decoding and preprocessors for cross-platform polymorphic shellcodes
detection, ARP misuse detection, and scanning detection. It supports IP
fragmentation and TCP segmentation to track connections and detect
stateful events.
Changes: Snort 2.0.x ruleset compatibility (distance, within, flow,
byte_test, byte_jump implementation). This release works under Solaris 8.
A possible race condition with asynchronous timer handling, many TCP
stream reassembly bugs, and many other bugs have been fixed.

System :: Monitoring
About: procps is a package of utilities which includes ps, vmstat, top, w,
skill, snice, pgrep, pkill, free, sysctl, pmap, uptime, and kill. These
utilities report what is running, who is logged in, how long the system
has been running, and what is using up memory. They can be used to kill
processes and change run-time kernel configuration values.
Changes: This release gives ps working -L, -T, and H options for NPTL
thread display, as well as the beginnings of m and -m support. This
feature requires a 2.6.0-test6 kernel, or a 2.6.0-test5 kernel with a

[073] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 2.1
by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 16:33
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into
runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your
regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting
machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene
star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?"
and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its
operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.
Changes: A bug in priority comparison code that affected input with many
embedded priorities has been fixed. Two examples programs have been added.

[105] - zoem 03-265
by Stijn van Dongen (http://freshmeat.net/users/micans/)
Monday, September 22nd 2003 06:45
Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
Text Processing :: General
About: Zoem is a macro/programming language. It can be used as an
all-round macro language, but has more specialized uses as well. One such
specific use is its support for creating small mark-up languages that map
to different devices. It has character filtering capabilities tailored
to this application. Two such languages come packaged with zoem; one for
creating manual pages that can be output either in troff or in HTML, the
other for creating FAQs again in either troff or HTML output. It supports
arithmetic evaluation, regular expressions, multidimensional data
storage, iteration, comprehensive IO, control operators, dictionary
stacks, system commands, and more.
Changes: The NAME macro was introduced among the zoem manual macros to
make troff output compatible with apropos (man -k, whatis). The line
length for nroff processing was adjusted so that it looks acceptable with
recent groffs. The obscure inline file syntax now comforms with generic
zoem syntax (the irregular special case syntax was removed). The comment
sequence (starting a comment up to and excluding the newline) now has a
variant for which the newline is stripped.
